Tutorial: Tallia Pendant

Created by Natalia Demkina

This tutorial is aimed to teach the basic and very simple

idea of a wire wrap technics which can be applied to
create a nice little teardrop shaped pendant or earrings.
By changing the length of the frame wires its possible to
add more loops to the embellishment of the item in oder
to chanfe the final result.

Materials:
two (18 cm 16 gauge) dead soft round wires
(frame wires)
one 40 cm 26 gauge round wire (weaving wire)
two 15 cm 26 gauge round wire
one 13 mm long and 10 mm wide drilled bead

Tools:
round nose pliers
flat nose pliers
wire cutters
ruler
fine file

Step 1:
Weaving the frame.
Take two 16 gauge 18 cm long wires, straighten them
with your hands. Leave 9 cm from the left end of one of
them and begin to weave with the 26 gauge 40 cm wire:
first make two or three loops on it (it will be the bottom
frame wire). These loops are just for fixing the wire, so
that it is easier to work with. I prefer to remove them
later when the weaving is finished.

Step 2:
After that add the second frame wire (the upper one)
and make a half wrap on both wires from down to up on
the front (don't go down yet), now wrap the upper wire 1
full time, then again a half wrap on the both wires down
on the back, and then wrap the bottom wire 1 full time.
Pinch both sides of the weaved part with the flat nose
pliers to keep it nice and tight.
Repeat this pattern for about an inch long.

Step 3:
The weaving length should be about 2 times longer than
the length of your bead. (Actually you can play with the
length of the weaving depending on the design of the
pendant).
Cut the weaving wires off with the cutters and press the
ends down tight to the frame wires with the flat nose
pliers.
An option: you can leave the right weaving wire uncut. In
that case you should make 4 more loops on the upper
frame wire and leave it like that, youre going to use it
later.

Step 4:
With your fingers bend the weaved piece reflecting the
shape of your bead. This is going to be the left side of
the item.
The form of the bend isnt crucial at this stage. The bend
doesnt have to be symmetrical. The right side of the
bend should be slightly more curled up along the bottom
side of the bead. This adjustment will be made on the
next step.

Step 5:
Making the small side loop.
Bend the left bottom wire down creating a nice curve as
shown on the picture, again, do it with your fingers.

Step 6:
Now pull the left bottom wire up over the frame of the
pendant, this way finishing the loop.
Heres the tip: after you have bent the frame wire down,
slightly pull the very base of the frame wire up (where
the loop starts) to make it more round, very carefully,
stroking movements of the fingers.
You can regulate the size of the loop by pulling the wire
further up. In this tutorial I intentionally made a bigger
loop than I usually would for illustration purpose.

Step 7:
Creating the front loop where the bail will be attached.
With your fingers make a bend on the left upper frame
wire as shown on the picture.

Step 8:
Bend the straght part of the left upper wire towards the
small loop you have created on previous step.

Step 9:
Continue bending the wire, the aim is to move the end of
the wire closer to the loop. When the end has reached
the small loop close enough, move the frame wire down
through the loop.
Heres the tip: when bending the wire avoid sharp
bindings, do it carefully, with stroking movements,
starting from the base and gradually moving further
along with the length of the wire.

Step 10:
Carefully pull the wire down and outward forming a loop,
it should be bigger than the first one. This loop will be
refered to as a big loop.

Step 11:
With your flat nose pliers grab the small loop and shift it
down so that it's placed perpendicular to the big loop.

Step 12:
That's how the small loop should be placed.

Step 13:
Stroking the small loop wire ( which is the left bottom
wire) and straightening it at the same time move the wire
down and to the right.

Step 14:
Bending the small loop wire a bit more create the
opposite side of the frame of the pendant. Use your
round nose pliers to form the curve at the end of the
wire.
Also adjust the shape of the weaved piece a little so that
it reflects the form of the bead.

Step 15:
This curve will be hugging the bead. If it happened that
the wire is longer than on the picture you can cut it off or
leave it as it is to make the curve bigger so that its
hugging the bead from the other side.

Step 16:
Using your fine file grind the end of the small loop wire
smoothing it.

Step 17:
Go back to the step 3 where you were weaving the
frame of the pendant, if you have cut the weaving wire
now you need to add about 15 cm 26 gauge wire.

Step 18:
If you havent cut it off and made 4 more loops on the
right upper frame wire as was said previously, just
continue to work with this weaving wire.

Step 19:
Weave the small loop wire and the right upper frame
wire together, it should be 5-6 tight loops. Bend this
weaving wire down aside, dont cut it off yet. We will use
it to thread the bead.

Step 20:
Bend this weaving wire down aside, dont cut it off yet.
We will use it to thread the bead.

Step 21:
Curve the right bottom frame wire as shown on the
picture.

Step 22:
Place this wire nicely parallel to the small loop wire and
then bend it down and under the whole frame.

Step 23:
Now curve the right upper frame wire, again placing it
parallel to all of the frames.

Step 24:
And now make an S-shaped curve as shown on the
picture.

Step 25:
With another 15 cm 26 gauge wire wrap together the
small loop wire and the right upper frame wire as shown
on the picture.

Step 26:
It should be 5-6 tight wraps. Make sure that the wraps
are really tight.

Step 27:
If you need to you can use your flat nose pliers to grab
the end of the weaving wire and by pulling it tighten the
wraps.

Step 28:
After you locked this two frame wires together you can
cut the weaving wire off, pinch the end with the fine file
to the frame on the back side of the item.

Step 29:
Now its time to add the bead. Thread it through the
weaving wire left on the step 20.

Step 30:
Fix this weaving wire on the the big loop wire with
several wraps.

Step 31:
Using your round nose pliers slightly curve the end of
the big loop wire on the back side of the pendant
placing it along with the other frame wires.
(I couldnt manage to create a nice curve on the first try,
I fixed it later on. Perhaps, the tools will leave little
scratches; it can be fixed by polishing the item on the
final stage).

Step 32:
At this point your pendant should look like on the picture.
Now we have two frame wires sticking out. One on the
front, another on the back side.

Step 33:
This is the picture of the current stage from the back
side.

Step 34:
Bring the right bottom frame wire from the back to the
front and make an S-shaped curve with it as shown on
the picture.

Step 35:
Carefully pulling with your hands the end of this wire
make a nice teardrop loop.

Step 36:
Cut the wire as it shown on the picture. All snipped wire
ends need to be filed off thoroughly.

Step 37:
Now we have only one wire left. Make a loop as shown
on the picture.

Step 38:
Snip it off leaving a nice curl, and file the end off.

Step 39:
With the flat nose pliers grab that curl, move it back a
little turning it towards the big loop and pass it through
the big loop.

Step 40:
Here you can see the illustration of the process.

Step 41:
The curl now has been passed through the bigg loop.

Step 42:
With the round nose pliers finish the form of the the curl ,
creating a loop. File this end off.
