Greetings!
Over these many years, I have collected quite a few translations of the Bible: The Jerusalem Bible, The Inclusive Bible,
The Complete Parallel Bible, The New Jerusalem Bible, The Catholic Study Bible, the New American Bible. And it is
fun to compare them with one another. Most of them are excellent because they are direct translations from either the
Hebrew or the Greek which were the original languages. However, one of my favorite for just reading is called The
Message and it is a Catholic/Ecumenical Edition. I want to share this translation with you. Following are the Second
Reading and the Gospel for today.
Second Reading (Pauls Letter to the Ephesians 4:17, 20-24)
And so I insist---and God backs me up on this---that there be no going along with the crowd, the empty-headed,
mindless crowd. Thats no life for you. You learned Christ! My assumption is that you have paid careful attention to him,
been well instructed in the truth precisely as we have it in Jesus. Since, then, we do not have the excuse of ignorance,
everythingand I do mean everythingconnected with the old way of life has to go. Its rotten through and through.
Get rid of it! And then take on an entirely new way of lifea God-fashioned life, a life renewed from the inside and
working itself into your conduct as God accurately reproduces his character in you.
Gospel of John 6:24-35
When the crowd realized he was gone and wasnt coming back, they piled into the Tiberias boats and headed for
Capernaum, looking for Jesus. When they found him back across the sea, they said, Rabbi, when did you get here?
Jesus answered, Youve come looking for me not because you saw God in my actions--- but because I fed you, filled
your stomachs---and for free. Dont waste your energy striving for perishable food like that. Work for the food that
sticks with you---food that nourishes your lasting life, food the Son of Man provides. He and what he does are
guaranteed by God the Father to last.
To that they said, Well, what do we do then to get in on Gods works?
Jesus said, Throw your lot in with the One that God has sent. That kind of a commitment gets you in on Gods works.
They waffled: Why dont you give us a clue about who you are, just a hint of whats going on? When we see whats up,
well commit ourselves. Show us what you can do. Moses fed our ancestors with Bread in the desert. It says so in the
Scriptures: He gave them bread from heaven to eat.
Jesus responded, The real significance of that Scripture is not that Moses gave you bread from heaven but that my
Father is right now offering you bread from heaven, the REAL bread. The Bread of God came down out of heaven and is
giving life to the world.
They jumped at that: Master, give us this bread, now and forever!
Jesus said, I am the Bread of Life. The person who aligns with me hungers no more and thirsts no more, ever. I have
told you this explicitly because even though you have seen me in action, you dont really believe me. Every person the
Father gives me eventually comes running to me. And once that person is with me, I hold on and dont let go. I came
down from heaven not to follow my own whim but to accomplish the will of the One who sent me.
Please take time and compare these Scriptures with your Bible at home. If you dont have a Bible---and it would be good
to have one of your own---please contact me. I have several New American Bibles that are only $5.00 each.
Deo Gratias----
BINGO!
Our next bingo is Sunday, August 23. Do you have some small
items around the house that you would like to see go to a new
home? Bring them with you to add to our prize table. We will
pick up the usual household & personal items to round out the
selection. Questions? Ask Barbara or Rose.
See you there for another afternoon of friends, fun and food!
