THE BACKSTORY OF MEATY

JOE:
AN ANATOMICAL TRAGEDY BY STANLEY
KUBRICK
CHAPTER 1/1: THE SAGA BEGINS
Meaty Joe was born as Dillon Brown to a settler family in the
Bakersfield area. For a wasteland child he had a relatively normal
childhood, but started showing symptoms of gigantism as he aged.
His parents grew worried for his health, but concluded that he just
happens to be bigger than the other boys in the small community.
The situation changed when he started showing severe symptoms
of the Proteus syndrome, a disease which causes anomalies in skin
growth and bone development. The left side of his face (from his
viewpoint) became subject to severe abnormal growths and
deformities which proved to be very painful. All of this was topped
off by the increasing evidence of mental retardation in Dillon.

At this point his parents became frightened, convinced that their

only son had become a deformed mutant beyond saving. Attempts
to keep Dillon out of the sight of the rest of the community proved
more difficult over time, and finally the family had to leave and
travel north, desperate for help for Dillon. In their travels they
finally ended up in a sprawling town by the name of Edenville.
There they ran into two men in dark suits, who said they were
medical experts passing by when their help was requested. The
family was relieved and gave the twelve-year old Dillon to the men,
who took him to their field laboratory. There they treated the

syndrome and restructured Dillons face surgically after getting rid

of the growths, but as they did so, they started noticing unique
properties in the boys physiology. His parents grew worried when
their son hadnt returned for several days, and started looking for
him. When the men finally confronted them, they said that Dillon
was to be transported East, to a place called the Commonwealth for
further research. The family tried to take Dillon back, but both
parents were shot in cold blood, after which the men swiftly left the
town.
However, they were ambushed and killed by a tribe of raiders
outside the town perimeter. The raiders spared the boy, but took
him to the tribal grounds to work as a child slave. There he
performed menial labor for the raiders, such as taking apart car
wrecks and constructing armor. As time went on, the tribesmen
started noticing rapid physical growth in the boy, to the point where
he was becoming inhumanly strong and large. Partly out of fear,
Dillon was revoked of his slave status and introduced into the tribe
as an honorary member. He was nicknamed Meaty Joe by his
peers, and slowly the memories of his family faded away and he
started living in the delusion that he had been a raider all along. So
he lived for years to come, living with the raiders, mostly seeing use
as a working steed and a thug within the tribe. He followed the
wishes of his tribesmen without question, and showed no mercy in
beating whatever the others pointed at into a red pulp. Recently
however, his relations with the tribe rapidly deteriorated due to
disagreements with harming prisoners up for ransom. His anger
issues had grown more prominent over the years, and the feud
ended up in him getting exiled after he broke the spines of two
tribesmen.
He wandered back to Edenville, where he settled down as a village
idiot/part-time worker. The mayor saw him working as a pump
operator for caps, seeing as he was a very affordable and efficient
employee. Most of the other townies react friendly towards him and
Joe shows compassion and gratitude back even though he is
banned from all local watering holes to avoid property damage.
Today he lives in a metal shack on the outskirts of the town, where

he either sleeps on an old mattress or punches the big rocks outside

for fun.
