OLAP TOOLS and INTERNET

The mainly comprehensive premises in computing have been the internet and data
warehousing thus the integration of these two giant technologies is a necessity

The Internet is a virtually free resource which provides a universal

connectivity within and between companies
The Web eases complex administrative tasks of managing distributed
environments
The Web allows companies to store and manage both data and applications
on server that can be centrally managed, maintained and updated
Web is a perfect medium for decision support
The General feature of the web enabled data access:
First-generation Web sites The client can access the decision support
report through static HTML pages via web browsers.
Second-generation Web sites Interactive and CGI (HTML gateway)
Third-generation Web sites
1. Replace the HTML Getaways with Web based application server.
2. Java Applets, and Web based application servers

Unstructured Content

Vendors approaches for deploying tools on the Web include:

HTML publishing
Helper applications : Window Media player
Plug-ins :
Acrobat(TM) Portable Document Format (PDF) Plugin, available from Adobe(TM).
QuickTime(TM) Plugin, for playing movies and sounds in the QuickTime format from
Apple Computer

Server-centric components

Definition of:server-centric
Designed to run only in a server rather than in individual client workstations. See LANcentric, host-centric, thin client and Web 2.0.

Java and ActiveX applications : ADO.NET,SAPI ,TAPI ,SMS

Tools from Internet/Web implementations
Arbor Essbase Web

It includes OLAP manipulations: Drill up, down, and across pivot, slice and dice

Fixed and dynamic reporting also data entry

It doesn't have client package.

Information Advantage WebOLAP

Server-centric
Powerful analytical engine that generates SQL to pull data from relational database
Provide client based package
Data store and the analytical engine are separate
MicroStrategy DSS Web

DSS server
relational OLAP server
DSS Architect data modeling tool
Dss Executive design tool for building executive information system
Brio technology
Support OLAP applications on the Web
Its own server brio.query.server

Common Gateway Interface (CGI) is a standard method used to generate
dynamic content on web pages . CGI, when implemented on a web server, provides
an interface between the web server and programs that generate the web content.
These programs are known as CGI scripts or simply CGIs; they are usually written in
a scripting language, but can be written in any programming language.

Ease : Gradually exclude someone from a post

Note :
[with object] (ease someone out) Gradually exclude someone from a post,
especially by devious or subtle manoeuvres: after the scandal he was eased out of
his job

Helper application
A helper application is an external viewer program launched to display content retrieved using a
web browser. Some common examples include Windows Media Player, QuickTime Player Real
Player and adobe reader for playing streaming content.
Unlike a plugin(whose full code is included into browser code), a small line is added to the
browser code to tell it to open a certain helper application in case it encounters a certain file
format.

What is Contribute?
Adobe Contribute 6.5 software is a powerful web publishing and website management tool
that integrates authoring, reviewing, and publishing in an easy-to-use WYSIWYG HTML editor.
Increase web publishing productivity while simplifying oversight and approval tasks. Contribute
6.5 also includes support for HTML5 and JQuery mobile.
In computing, a plug-in (or plugin, extension, or add-on / addon) is a software component that
adds a specific feature to an existing software application. When an application supports plugins, it enables customization. The common examples are the plug-ins used in web browsers to
add new features such as search-engines, virus scanners, or the ability to utilize a new file type
such as a new video format. Well-known browser plug-ins include the Adobe Flash Player, the
QuickTime Player, and the Java plug-in, which can launch a user-activated Java applet on a web
page to its execution a local Java virtual machine.

ActiveX

ActiveX is a software framework created by Microsoft which adapts its earlier

Component Object Model (COM) and Object Linking and Embedding (OLE)
technologies for content downloaded from a network, particularly in the context of
the World Wide Web.[1] It was introduced 1996 and is commonly used in its Windows
operating system. In principle it is not dependent on Microsoft Windows, but in
practice, most ActiveX controls require either Microsoft Windows or a Windows
emulator. Most also require the client to be running on Intel x86 hardware, because
they contain compiled code.
