B8/8 Introduction
Metalfree (ADSS cables) and metal-armored (OPGW, OPPW) aerial cables with integrated optical fibres (called optical fibre aerial cables)
are used to transmit information. The information is transmitted by means of modulated light pulses in the interior of the thin optical fibres.
These fibres have a total diameter of approx. 300 m. The optical fibre aerial cables can be stressed upto <!--[if !supportEmptyParas]-->a
limited tensile force without any increase of the optical signal damping in the fibres. However, in the case of a radial force, the optical
damping will increase by bounds. This increase can lead to a reduction of the information flow through the fibres.
The fibres with an additional length are beded in one or several relatively rigid coaxial tubes to avoid inadmissible stress. In the case of
metalfree optical cables the tubes are beded in a supporting structure of aramid fibres. The optical fibre cable is finally covered with an
extruded PE-mantle. The core of the metall-armored aerial cable is covered with one or more layers of Aluminium wires, Aluminium alloy
wires or Aluminium-clad steel wires.
As the optical fibres have to be protected against inadmissible radial forces during and after the installation of optical fibre aerial cables the
fittings at the tension-, suspension- and fixing points have to meet special requirements.
For common conductors and ground wire we use fittings for tension and suspension points which provoke the necessary grippage force by
effecting of a high radial force (for example wedge type tension clamp, suspension clamp). Due to the high pressure sensitivity of optical
fibres beded in the aerial cable these types of fittings are not suitable for optical fibre aerial cables.
The fittings of the RIBE-Optofit-program are designed regarding this high pressure sensitivity. The fittings are especially adapted to this
purpose. The induced radial forces are spread over a larger contact surface (for example dead end) in such a way that the fibres are not
inadmissibly stressed and the necessary grippage forces are achieved. It is impossible to determine standardized accessories for optical
fibre aerial cables as the structure of the different cables is very manifold.
Fittings for optical fibre aerial cables mainly consist of the following group of fittings:
- Helically formed fittings for tension and suspension points
- Earth connections
- Tower down-lead accessories
- Vibration dampers
Helically formed fittings form the major part of accessories for optical fibre aerial cables. They are composed of helically formed rods which according to the respective application - are separate or preassembled, straight or bended on delivery.
Helically formed accessories can be used to tension, to suspend or to connect conductors, optical fibre aerial cables, glass fibre rods and
solid rods such as guys. In addition, helically formed accessories are used for protection or repair of conductors or optical fibre aerial cables,
for attachment to post insulators and for tensioning of street lighting. Helically formed accessories have been used very succesfully since
1950. The application of helically formed accessories is not at all limited to overhead lines. Helically formed accessories are also used to a
large extent for the construction of antennae, radar stations etc.
The principle of operation of helically formed accessories is based on the principle of the development of a low pressure over a large area.
The inside diameter of the unloaded helical rods is slightly smaller than the outside diameter of the conductor, optical fibre aerial cable or
solid rod. By wrapping the helical rods on a conductor or optical fibre aerial cable, a spring tension is created, producing the necessary
frictional contact. This spring tension is elastic and ensures a constant grip.
To ensure the full performance, helically formed accessories must exactly be adapted to the outside diameter of conductor, optical fibre
aerial cable or solid rod.
In general, helically formed accessories are made of a material similar to that of conductor, optical fibre aerial cable or solid rod. Usually this
garanties a similar corrosion resitivity.
Installation of helically formed accessories can be done without any tools. Installation faults are nearly impossible. Mounting instructions are
available on demand. Helically formed accessories are largely protected by patents or registration of designs. If helically formed accessories
are required for applications other than those included in this catalogue, a specific inquiry is requested.
The RIBE numbers of helically formed accessories start with a combination of letters that is followed by six figures and possibly letters added
at the end.
for example: AG 089 077
The respective letters or figures have the following meaning:
1) Starting letters
The first capital letter and in some cases the first and the second letter designate the respective type.
A - Dead ends
B - Spacers
D - Vibration dampers
J - Insulator ties
1 / 117
ONLINE-CATALOGUE
L - Line guards
LT - Suspension grips
M - Bird flight diverters (star)
R, UR, UT - Protection rods
S - Armor rods
T - Suspension rods
V - Line splices
Z - Bird flight diverters (spring)
The last capital letter and in some cases also the before last designate the material.
A - Aluminium alloy
B - Bronze
G - Steel, h.d.g.
H - Stainless steel
K - Copper alloy
P - Plastic material
S - Other material combinations
V - Copper-clad steel
W - Aluminium-clad steel
2) Six figures
The six figures of the RIBE number shall be considered as two groups, three figures each. The first group gives by pointing off the last figure
the largest possible cable diameter for which the accessory is suitable (measurement: mm). The second group indicates the overall length of
accessory in cm.
3) Letters added to the RIBE number
The letters added to the RIBE number refer to special applications or the nature of the accessory. The respective letters have the following
meaning:
H - Suitable for post insulator with neck
L - Suitable for "Lngsbund" type insulator
M - Suitable for "Mittelbund" type insulator
li - Left hand outer lay accessory
s - Special design

Material:
Support: Cast steel, h.d.g.
Pivotal joints: Cast steel, h.d.g.
Pin: Stainless steel
Application:
C-shaped supports are preferably used on the top of suspension towers to suspend ground wires and optical fibre aerial cables.
The attachment of the suspension clamp is made by a cardanic joint which assures universal movement of the suspension fitting. The
mechanical behaviour of the suspension is almost identical to that of the conductor suspension in suspension sets.
The C-shaped support is resistant to short-circuit. Additionally articulation points can be thermically relieved by using shunts.
C-shaped supports can also be installed with insulation. For that the insulation set RIBE-No. 115 250 is required.
The connection for suspension clamps correponds to LA/ LB 19 or 22 to DIN 48 074, i.e. all customary suspension clamps with strap
widths according to GA/ GB 19 or 22 can be inserted without changing of straps.
18 / 117
ONLINE-CATALOGUE
Because of its C-shape, the support permits the suspension clamp to pivot up to 45.
Remarks:
Bolts for tower connection of the support are included only upon special request with indication of required bolt dimension.
Armour grip suspensions and C-shaped supports have to be ordered separately (armour grip suspensions for C-shaped support: see
data-sheet B801 ff.)
For other executions please inquire.

Material:
Roll: Polyamid
Straps: Steel, h.d.g.
Bolt, nut: h.d.g., alternatively stainless steel
Application:
Suspension pulleys are used for suspension of ADSS cables (preferably at wooden pole or concrete pole - see figure below). The
suspension pulleys benefit from the fact that in case of a tree falling in the span length the ADSS cable is not destroyed. This has no
influence on the communication line.
To avoid high compression forces at the point of contact between cable and suspension pulleys the use of protection rods is
recommended.

Material:
Helical rods: Aluminium-clad steel
Thimble: Malleable cast iron, h.d.g.
Application:
See data-sheet B810
Remarks:
When selecting helical dead ends the total diameter resulting from the cable diameter plus two times the rod diameter of the protection
rods has to be taken into account. Furthermore the rated forces of thimbles are observed (see data-sheet B821).
For installation follow RIBE-Mounting Instruction No. 9.
These dead end designs are only suitable for cables or conductors with right-hand lay armoring and ADSS cables. If dead ends for lefthand lay cables or conductors are required this must specifically be stated when placing the order.

Material:
Helical rods: Aluminium-clad steel
Application:
Protection rods are preferably made of Aluminium-clad steel-wires and shall protect the self supporting fibre optical aerial cables at
tension sets. They are mounted beneath the helical dead end and spread the radial forces on the cable uniformly along the zone of
contact.
Especially on the cable at the loop-side of the helical dead end radial forces (depending on the tension force) can stress the optical part
of the cable inadmissibly. This will cause high damping which results in a reduced data transmission or in the worst case an
interruption.
The length of the cable guard is determined in such a way that two vibration dampers can be mounted on the rods at the span-side
avoiding that the damper clamp is stressing the optical part of the cable.
For optical fibre aerial cables with right-hand outer layer, cableguards with left-hand layer are always used in order to avoid a torsion of
the cable by the helical dead end with right-hand layer. A torsion of the aerial cable is causing an enlenghtening leading to a destruction
of the optical part of the cable.
Installation:
The helical rods can be wrapped on by hand in bundles. Tools are not required for the assembly. Prior to installation the cable must be
cleaned along the overall lenght of protection rods.
1 ..... Thimble
2 ..... Protection rods
3 ..... Helical dead end
Remarks:
These protection rods designs are only suitable for cables with right-hand lay armoring and ADSS cables. If dead ends for left-hand lay
cables are required this must be specifically stated when placing the order.

Application:
See data-sheet B810
Remarks:
When selecting the helical dead ends the total diameter resulting out of the cable diameter plus two times the rod diameter of the
protection rods has to be taken into account. Furthermore the rated forces of thimbles are observed (see data-sheet B821).
For installation follow RIBE-Mounting Instruction No. 9.
These dead end designs are only suitable for cables of right-hand lay armoring. If dead ends for left-hand lay cables are required this

Material:
Helical rods: Steel, h.d.g.
Thimble: Steel, h.d.g.; malleable cast iron, h.d.g.
Application:
These dead ends are particulary designed for the full tensioning of ADSS cable in short, medium and long spans. Three ways of
application are possible:
for short spans (up to approx. 70m) and small forces: :
The dead end is mounted on the cable starting at the black crossing mark. This leads to a long cable loop and a large bending radius of
the cable. A thimble can be used in the loop of the dead end.

Material:
Helical rods: Steel, h.d.g.
Application:
These dead ends are designed for the full tensioning of the separate support cable (left-hand outer layer). The advantage of dead ends
compared with tensioning devices commonly used is that there is no bending of the relatively stiff supporting cable. It is recommended
to protect the dead end loop from abrasion by means of a thimble.
These dead ends can be used to suspend self supporting figure-8-cables too. Two dead ends per suspension point are required for any
such application (see figure below).
Installation:
Dead ends can be installed and removed quickly and without application of any tools. Wrapping of dead ends starts at the crossing

These dead end designs are only suitable for cables with right-hand lay armoring and ADSS cables. If dead ends for left-hand lay
cables are required this must specifically be stated when placing the order.

Material:
Helical rods: Aluminium alloy
Application:
Cable guards protect the ADSS cables at the tension assembly. They are mounted under the helical dead end and reduce the radial
forces in the cable - especially at the loopside of the dead end.
Radial forces (depending on the tension force) can stress the optical part of the cable inadmissibly. This can cause high damping in the
optical fibre. This results in a high signal damping in the optical fibre up to an interruption of the optical transmission.
Installation:
The helical rods can be wrapped on by hand in bundles. Tools are not required for installation.

Helical rods: Aluminium alloy
Application:
Patch rods are used to repair damaged OPGW (up to 100 % of the outside layer) and are preferably employed in the free span. Patch
rods are capable to restore the electrical conductivity and mechanical strength securing thus the full performance of OPGW. The length
of the patch rods was determined in such a way, that a damaged place up to 50 cm is covered. In case of larger damaged areas longer
special rods are necessary.
Installation:

he helical rods can be wrapped on by hand in bundles. Tools are not required for installation. The rods have to be installed in such a
way that the middle mark of the rods are in the center of the damaged area.
Rods of diameters of more than 7 mm must singly be wrapped on. Prior to wrapping on the single rods, the outer layer of OPGW must
be cleaned and be covered with friction bond. The friction bond is enclosed on delivery.
For installation follow RIBE-Mounting Instruction No. 14.

Material:
Helical rods: Steel, h.d.g.
Application:
Protection rods are preferably made of steel, h.d.g. and shall protect the self supporting fibre optical aerial cables at tension sets. They
are mounted beneath the helical dead end and spread the radial forces on the cable uniformly along the zone of contact.

B850/0 Introducing to vibration dampers
Aeolian vibrations:
Under certain conditions phase conductors, ground wires and optical fibre aerial cables in transmission lines are excited to mechanical
vibrations by wind. These are causing alternating bending stresses which superpose to the static tensile bending stress.
Suspension- and tension points are especially endangered. As shown in practice for an undamped aerial cable these stresses cause fatigue
breakages of single strands with the possible result of a complete breakage of the optical fibre aerial cable and subsequent breakdown.
Efficient protection against aeolian vibration is given by the installation of suitable vibrations dampers.
Purpose of vibration damper:
Vibration dampers are combined frictional resonance dampers. Purpose of vibration dampers is to dissipate partly the wind power input on
the conductor or optical fibre aerial cable to prevent critical cable stresses.
Function of vibration damper:
The vibration damper consists of a messenger wire with specially formed weights fixed on both ends. The clamp, to mount the damper on the
conductor is fixed between the weights on the messenger wire and transfers the vibrations from the conductor or aerial cable to the
messenger wire. The mechanical vibration energy is transformed within the messenger wire to heat caused by friction. High power
dissipation within the small range of natural frequencies is a characteristic feature of most vibration dampers. Under field conditions,
however, a wide band of natural conductor frequencies has to be expected. Therefore, the dampers must be effective within a wide
frequency band and allow only small residual conductor/ aerial cable amplitudes.
Selection of vibration damper:
The vibration damper, i.e. its mechanical properties (impedance), must fit for the conductor or optical fibre aerial cable. If not, either the
damper can cause damages at its clamp on the conductor or aerial cable, or the damper itself can be destroyed.
Location of vibration damper:
To ensure the optimum efficiency of the vibration dampers, it is necessary to adapt the optimum damper design to the given conditions. This
adaptation requires the determination of the exact damper placement and the number of dampers required.
The most suitable vibration damper is ineffective if it is located in the vibration node, because the conductor or aerial cable is nearly not
moving at this point and thus no vibration energy is transformed into heat. This case must be avoided by determination of a suitable location.
If tension points are concernd this is often only possible with big efforts. In this case two dampers must be located on the conductor or optical
fibre aerial cable nearby the tension point. Thus, it is for sure, that at least on damper is working.
Damping concept:
Every damper is capable to transform a certain amount of vibration energy into heat, without being overloaded. As the vibration energy is
increasing with the length of the span, for longer spans several vibration dampers have to be installed. In special cases, as for example river
crossings, additional damping has to be provided inside the span.
The damping concept gives information about the damper location, the necessary quantity of dampers considering the length of the span and
the type of damper (for example messenger wire made of stainless steel, clamping range etc.)
The damping concept is developed with a computer vibration study. Given the conductor and damper properties, for every installationarrangement and span-length it is proven that the strain of conductors or optical fibre aerial cable (admissible bending strain = 150 m/m)
and vibration dampers remains uncritical and will not cause fatique breakages.
Selection of vibration damper clamp:
The selection of a suitable vibration damper clamp occurs after selection of the vibration damper type. The suitable clamp prevents
excessive strain of optical fibres in a cable. For aerial cables additional protection rods are necessary. When determining the vibration
100 / 117
ONLINE-CATALOGUE
damper clamp the total diameter resulting out of the aerial cable diameter plus two times the rod diameter of the protection rods has to be
considered. By means of clamping tests the optimal clamp size and recommended tightening torque of the bolt are determined.
Remarks:
In the following catalog sheets vibration dampers of different sizes with different diameter ranges are shown. It must be underlined that this is
only a rough classification. The exact determination and adjustment of the damper location is made by a calculation of the damper location or
by a vibration study.

Material:
Helical rod: Weather-proof wear-resistant plastic
Application:
Purpose of Avibra vibration dampers is to dissipate the wind power input on the ADSS cable to prevent critical conductor stresses.
The Avibra vibration damper is composed of a helically formed plastic rod. About one fifth of the overall length of the helix is of smaller
diameter. This section is used to attach the damper and provides a completely reliable grip on the ADSS cable so that the damper will
not slip even on slopes. The remaining length of the helix has no close contact to the cable. Due to differential motions between ADSS
cable and Avibra damper, the ADSS cable vibrations are eliminated.
Installation:
Avibra vibration dampers are installed by first wrapping the gripping section (smaller helix) and afterwards the damping section on the
optical fibre aerial cable.
The damper must be installed in such a way that the gripping section is placed towards the tower and the damping section towards the
free span. No special tools are required for installation.
Avibra vibration dampers can be installed without problems on any existing cable - even subsequently.
For installtion follow RIBE-Mounting Instruction No. 17.
