I.

KNOWLEDGE. Write TRUE if the statement is always correct. Otherwise, write FALSE. (2
points each)
1. The standard deviation of a Poisson random variable X is .
2. If f(x) is a probability mass function, f(x) can be greater than 1.
3. For events A and B that are mutually exclusive, P(A B) = 1.
4. If the variances of two discrete random variables are equal, then the means are equal.
5. The inflection points of the normal curve occur at x = .

II.

ANALYSIS (5 points each)

1. American roulette is a game in which a wheel turns on a spindle and is divided into 38
pockets. Thirty-six of the pockets are number 136, of which half are red and half are
black. Two of the pockets are green and are numbered 0 and 00. The dealer spins the
wheel and a small ball in opposite directions. As the ball slows to a stop, it has an equal
probability of landing in any of the numbered pockets. Find the probability of landing in the
number 00 pocket.
2. A random number generator on a computer selects three integers from 1 to 20. What is
the probability that all three numbers are less than or equal to 5?
3. From past experience, a stockbroker believes that under present economic conditions a
customer will invest in tax-free bonds with a probability of 0.6, will invest in mutual funds
with a probability of 0.3, and will invest in both tax-free bonds and mutual funds with a
probability of 0.15. At this time, find the probability that a customer will invest in either
tax-free bonds or mutual funds.
4. In a group of 101 students, 35 are freshmen and 36 are sophomores. Find the probability
that a student picked from this group at random is either a freshman or sophomore.
5. In a certain assembly plant, three machines B1, B2, and B3, make 30%, 45%, and 25%,
respectively, of the products. It is known from past experience 2%, 3%, and 2% of the
products made by each machine, respectively, are defective. Now, suppose that a finished
product is randomly selected. What is the probability that it is defective?
6. In number 5, if a product was chosen randomly and found to be defective, what is the
probability that it was made by machine B3?
7. Suppose that a probability mass function is given by the table as shown. Find the expected
value of g(X) = 2X2.

9. The number of flaws in bolts of cloth in textile manufacturing is assumed to be Poisson
distributed with a mean of 0.1 flaw/m2. What is the probability that there are at least two
flaws in 10 m2 of cloth?
10.Assume that the probability of the birth of a child of a particular gender is 50%. In a family
with four children, what is the probability that there is at least one boy?
11.Determine the value of c that makes the function f(x, y) = c|x y| a joint probability mass
function over the six points with x = 2, 0, 2 and y = 2, 3.
12.In number 11, find P(X + Y 4).
13.Suppose that a probability density function is given by f(x) = x/8 for 3 < x < 5. Find F(x).
14.In number 13, find P(2 < X < 7/2).
15.Suppose the current measurements in strip of wire are assumed to follow a normal
distribution with a mean of 10 mA and a standard deviation of 2 mA. What is the
probability that a measurement will be more than 13 mA?
16.In number 15, the current measurement of 95.9071% of samples is above what value?
17.Find z such that P(Z > z) = 0.444240.
