Safety Operation

10

Bring CMB IO-7 into operation following the instructions in Section 2 Setting
into Operation on page 15.

CMB IO-7 must only be used with an outlet that has a solid, protective
ground.

Before connecting and disconnecting test objects, verify that all outputs have
been turned off and are in de-energized state. Never connect or disconnect
a test object while the outputs are voltage- or current-carrying ("ON").

When disconnecting cables, always start on the side feeding the power.

All sockets of the IO modules on the rear of the unit are to be considered
dangerous. Hazardous voltages up to 300Vrms are present. Hence, only use
cables rated to the respective working voltage requirements.

Do not insert objects (e.g. screwdrivers, etc.) into the sockets or into the
ventilation slots of the enclosure.

Do not operate CMB IO-7 under wet or moist conditions (condensation).

Do not operate CMB IO-7 when explosive gas or vapors are present.

The SELV interface (Safety Extra Low Voltage) of CMB IO-7 (Host Interf.,
Sync and ext. Interf.) should only have external devices connected that
meet the requirements for SELV based on EN 60950 or IEC 60950.

When setting up CMB IO-7, make sure that the enclosure ventilation slots on
the back, top, and bottom of the test unit remain unobstructed.

Voltages up to 1kV can be present inside of CMB IO-7. Therefore, CMB IO-7
may only be opened by the manufacturer.

If CMB IO-7 is opened by a user, all guarantees and warranties are

invalidated.

Safety Instructions

If CMB IO-7 seems to be functioning improperly, please call the nearest

OMICRON service center (refer to section OMICRON Contact Addresses

12

Designated Use

1 Designated Use
CMB IO-7 is a PC-controlled test unit principally consisting of binary inputs and
outputs. For that purpose CMB IO-7 provides 7 module plug-in slots which can
be equipped with different IO1 modules. As a result CMB IO-7 is flexible and is
able to efficiently support a wide range of protection applications.
The signals applied to the inputs of CMB IO-7 are precisely time tagged. The
desired timing characteristic of the corresponding output reactions can be
specified in the controlling test software of the OMICRON Test Universe by
using freely programmable sequences.
If CMB IO-7 is used together with a CMC test set, CMB IO-7 appears to be a fully
integrated extension of the binary inputs and outputs available.
CMB IO-7 is a part of the OMICRON Test Universe test system which, in
addition to the CMB IO-7 test unit, consists of a personal computer, the test
software and typically a CMC test set.

Functionality of CMB IO-7:

Acquisition of binary input signals

Output of binary signals

Time-synchronization with the CMC test set (CMC 156 or CMC 256)

Supply of DC voltage to the test object (AUX DC)

Any other use of CMB IO-7 is deemed as not being in accordance with this
manual.

Setting into Operation

2 Setting into Operation

2.1 System Components
Before operating CMB IO-7 verify whether all components1 of the test system
are available.
You need the following components in order to operate CMB IO-7 :

CMB IO-7 with power cable

Connecting cable CMB IO-7 PC (included)

Connecting cable CMB IO-7 CMC for synchronization (included)

PC2 with parallel interface and installed test software

Note:

If CMB IO-7 is used as an extension of the CMC test set, two

parallel interfaces are required to connect both test sets to the PC.
For portable PCs (notebooks) a PCMCIA parallel port card is
available for this purpose (refer to Section 8.2 Ordering
Information on page 66).

2.2 Starting the Test System

The following description assumes that the PC has been set up and the test
software of the OMICRON Test Universe has been installed.
Detailed instructions for installing the OMICRON Test Universe software can be
found in the installation booklet supplied with the program CD.
This descriptions refer to the following test system configurations:

Test system consisting of a PC and a CMB IO-7

Test system consisting of a PC, a CMB IO-7 and a CMC

It does not take into consideration any additional external devices.

Note:

When setting up the test system, it is most important to make sure that
the ventilation slots remain unobstructed.

1. Deliverables, refer to packing list

2. The system requirements for the PC can be found in the installation guide for the OMICRON
Test Universe software.

15

Test Unit CMB IO-7

2.2.1

CMB IO-7 used as an Extension of a CMC Test Set

For applications where the number of available binary inputs and outputs of the
CMC test set is not sufficient, the binary inputs and outputs of CMB IO-7 can be
used as an equivalent extension.
The binary inputs and outputs of CMB IO-7 are supported by the test software
of the OMICRON Test Universe in the same manner as the binary inputs and
outputs of a CMC, i.e. they can be recorded as well as act as a trigger condition
for a test sequence.
For such a test set-up two parallel interfaces (parallel port, printer port) are
required: one interface for CMC and one for CMB IO-7. If a portable PC
(notebook) is used, a PCMCIA parallel port card is available for this purpose
(refer to Section 8.2 Ordering Information on page 66).
For synchronizing the test sets, CMC andCMB IO-7 must be interconnected
using the supplied cable VEHK0003.

3.2 Assembly Groups

Setup and Function

The block diagram shows all externally accessible signals with gray shading.
Every gray area represents a galvanic group that is isolated from all other
galvanic groups.
All connections are located on the rear side of the test unit. These include:

main power supply ("mains group"),

the SELV interfaces "SELV group" (SELV = Safety Extra Low Voltage)

the connectors of equipped IO modules.

The safety relevant isolated circuits (power SELV, power IO modules and
IO modules SELV) are marked as "reinforced insulation" in the block diagram.

3.2.1

AUX DC (DC Supply for Test Objects)

For test objects (e.g., protection relays) that do not have a DC power supply
available, a DC voltage from 0...264V can be applied by the software via the
AUX DC output.
This adjustable DC voltage is available on all 7 IO modules (all module plug-in
slots are part of the same potential group AUX DC). The AUX DC voltage can
also be used to generate potential-carrying output signals at the output modules.
The AUX DC voltage is galvanicly separated from all other connections of a
output module.
Using the AUX DC utility software of the OMICRON Test Universe it is possible
to adjust a voltage on the AUX DC output and to store the voltage value in the
CMB IO-7 test unit. In this case the selected (stored) voltage is applied at the
AUX DC output within a few seconds after switching on the power supply for
CMB IO-7.
For more detailed information about configuring the AUX DC supply please refer
to the online help system for the test software of the OMICRON Test Universe.

Host Interf. (PC interface)

The use of the parallel printer port for the connection between
PC and CMB IO-7 ensures sufficient data transfer rates as well
as the use of any standard notebook computer to be the
controlling PC.
The system requirements for the PC can be found in the
installation booklet for the test software of the OMICRON Test
Universe.
When the test software of the OMICRON Test Universe is
started, it automatically searches for the interface (LPTx) on the
PC to which a CMB IO-7 is connected.

ext. Interf. (external interface)

Via the "ext. Interf." interface a GPS synchronization of the
CMB IO-7 can be performed.
The CMGPS synchronization unit is available as an optional
accessory. It communicates and is powered via the "ext.
Interf." interface with the CMB IO-7.
For further information about CMGPS please refer to
Section 8.1 Optional Equipment on page 65.

Sync. (synchronization with a CMC test set)

In order to obtain a synchronized collaboration of CMB IO-7
and CMC, the test sets must be connected to each other using
the synchronization cable VEHK0003.
Synchronized collaboration of CMB IO-7 and CMC enables the
following functions:

22

Simultaneous sampling of the input signals.

Synchronous or time-controlled output of binary output

signals.

Evaluation of trigger conditions during test sequences.

Setup and Function

3.2.3

Central Processing Unit (CPU)

The CPU of the CMB IO-7 test unit contains a digital signal processor (DSP) and
performs essentially the following tasks:

3.2.4

Communication with the PC via the parallel interface (Host Interf.).

Acquisition of input signals and control of output signals.

Synchronization with CMC test set.

High precision central clock generator (with synchronization options using

CMGPS).

Monitoring and control of the entire system hardware.

Current Sources (DC-DC)

An AC/DC converter performs the conversion of the variable DC supply
(85...264VAC) and assures for adequate EMC1 filtering.
The supply of the modules that are respectively counted as their own galvanic
groups is implemented using DC-DC converters with reinforced insulation.

3.2.5

IO Modules
The CMB IO-7 test unit has 7 plug-in slots for IO modules. Depending on the
module types (input or output modules) the plug-in slots are equipped from left
to right or from right to left. Refer to Figure 3-2.

Provided no other information is given in the technical data of the modules, the
DC voltage AUX DC is available on the module connector of every module.
Note:

The AUX DC ouput of all 7 IO modules belongs to the same potential

group.

Input modules
The inputs are read at a time resolution of 100s. Depending on the
configuration made with the OMICRON Test Universe software, the input
signals are then debounced or degliched.
The software allows the definition if potential-carrying (wet) or potential-free
(dry) contacts. For potential-carrying contacts it is also possible to adjust the
expected nominal voltage as well as the threshold voltage for the binary inputs.
For detailed technical information about input modules please refer to
section 6 Technical Data and Descriptions of IO Modules on page 45.
For detailed information about configuring the binary inputs please refer to the
online help system for the test software of the OMICRON Test Universe.

General Information
For an overview of available IO modules and detailed information please refer
to section 6 Technical Data and Descriptions of IO Modules on page 45.
The CMB IO-7 test unit provides a total of 7 plug-in slots which can be equipped
with different IO modules. The IO modules have 40-pole module connectors
used as CMB IO-7 interfaces for connecting the test objects.
The output modules are inserted in a descending order beginning with plug-in
slot No. 7 (7, 6, ...), input modules are inserted in an ascending order beginning
with plug-in slot No. 1 (1, 2, ...).
On delivery the modules are provided with the module connector coded
according to the module type. For more detailed information please refer to the
corresponding module description in section 6 Technical Data and
Descriptions of IO Modules on page 45.
Note:

Only connect or disconnect the module connectors on the CMB IO-7

when under a no load condition (i.e. when in the de-energized state).

40-pole Module Connector

The PLUSCON-VC industry plug connection system of Phoenix Contact is used
for the 40-pole module connectors for connecting the test objects to CMB IO-7.
Every module connector consists of 5 contact inserts, each carrying 8 contacts.
For reliable contact of the module connectors, the module connector plugs on
the cable side must be fixed to the CMB using the knurled nuts on the connector
housing. Only connect or disconnect the module connectors when under a no
load condition (i.e. when in de-energized state).

connection housing.

Ordering information for module connectors

The complete module connector kit (see Table 4-1, No. 1-7) can be obtained
from OMICRON using the order number VEHZ0740.
The parts No. 1 to 6 (see Table 4-1) can also be ordered directly from Phoenix
Contact (www.phoenixcontact.com).

Jumper for module connectors

To bridge multiple contacts or terminals to each other (e.g. the AUX DC voltage)
a jumper can be inserted into the module connector (see Table 4-1, No. 7). If
connection to intermediate contacts is not required, the concerning teeth of the
jumper's contact comb can be removed using a suitable pair of nose pliers (refer
to Figure 4-7).
For the connection of conductors, or for tapping off potentials, the jumper
provides 3 Fast-On contacts (4.8 x 0.8mm).
Ensure that no external voltage sources are connected to the internal DC supply
AUX DC.

Coding the module connectors

In order to avoid unintentional confusion of the connecting cables for different
module types, the module connectors of the modules on the CMB IO-7 device
side are coded. The corresponding module connectors for the cable side, which
are supplied from the factory, are already correctly coded.
For information about the specific coding of the individual modules please refer
to the applicable module description in section 6.
Uncoded module connectors must be correctly coded by the user by removing
the corresponding coding noses. The coding noses can be removed using a pair
of nose pliers or a knife.

4.4 AUX DC Connection Point

Provided no other information is given in the specific module description the
AUX DC voltage is available on every module.
Please note that the AUX DC outputs of all 7 module plug-in slots are part of the
same AUX DC potential group! Make sure that no external voltage sources are
connected to the internal DC supply AUX DC.
On all modules the AUX DC voltage output is protected against injection of
external voltages by a damping diode.

5.4.2

Timing Characteristics of Input Signals (Sampling)

The inputs are sampled by CMB IO-7 with a time resolution of 100s. Depending
on the configuration, the input signals are

evaluated (normal mode, changing mode, hold),

stored together with the time information and/or

used as a part of a logical trigger condition (control of real-time command

sequences for the output of output signals).

The processing of the input signals is shown in the following figure. The
individual processing steps and the timing characteristic are described below.

Input signals

t0

Input module

t0 + T
(T=100s)
Control unit

Description of Figure 5-1:

1. The input signals are pre-processed by the input circuit of the module (switch
threshold, galvanic separation, etc.) and converted to digital signals. This
causes an input delay that depends on the specific module (approx. 30 s).
2. CMB internal cycle time T = 100s (sampling instants).
The digitized input signals of all input modules are sampled simultaneously
(synchronous) every 100s (t0 or t0 + n*T).
3. If the test software of the OMICRON Test Universe is configured accordingly,
the binary input signals can be debounced and/or deglitched and are then
sent to the control unit (t0 + T). Configuring a deglitch of input signals
(suppression of short signal pulses) causes an additional delay (dead time).
4. At the moment t0 + T the control unit (digital signal processor DSP) receives
the sampled input signals of all equipped modules. These are evaluated and
can be stored together with the corresponding time information.

38

Technical Data of the CMB IO-7 Basic Unit

5. Signal changes are stored in a sample buffer memory together with the
corresponding time information.

Deglitch of input signals

In order to suppress short spurious pulses, the input modules can perform a
deglitch of the input signals (module dependent). The deglitch process to
suppress spurious pulses results in an additional dead time and introduces a
signal delay. In order to be detected as a valid signal level, the level of an input
signal must have a constant value for at least the duration of the deglitch time.
The deglitch function is performed before the debounce function described
below.
The following figure explains the deglitch function.
Figure 5-2:
Signal curve, deglitch of
input signals

Input signal

Input signal
deglitched
Tdeglitch

Tdeglitch

Debounce of input signals

For input signals with a bouncing characteristic, a debounce function can be
configured (Tdebounce > 0). This means that the first change of the input signal
causes the debounced input signal to be changed and then being kept on this
signal value for the duration of the debounce time.
Another advantage of a meaningful debounce time is that unnecessary entries
in the sample buffer memory can be avoided and that no unnecessary or faulty
trigger conditions can occur.
The debounce function is placed after the deglich function described above.

39

Test Unit CMB IO-7

The following figure explains the debounce function. On the right-hand side of
the figure the debounce time is too short. As a result the debounced signal rises
to "high" once again, even while the input signal is still bouncing and does not
drop to low level until the expiry of another period Tdebounce.

Timing Characteristics Input/Output Signals

(Sequences)
CMB IO-7 without CMC 156/256 test set
In order to obtain meaningful reaction times of the output modules compared to
the input signals (trigger conditions), the command sequences (command lists)
are stored inside the CMB IO-7 and processed in real-time.
100s after the input signals are sampled (t0) the binary input values are also
available as trigger conditions to initiate corresponding event-depending
sequences. A trigger condition typically consists of logical combinations of
inputs, loop counters and/or timers.

Description of Figure 5-4:

1. The input signals are pre-processed by the input circuit of the module (switch
threshold, galvanic separation, etc.) and converted to digital signals. This
causes an input delay that depends on the specific module (approx. 30 s,
module depending).
Deglitching input signals (suppression of short
signal changes) causes an additional delay (dead time).
4. At the moment t0 + T the control unit (digital signal processor DSP) receives
the sampled input signals of all equipped modules. These are immediately
processed and can be stored together with the corresponding time
information.
5. Signal changes are stored in a sample buffer memory together with the
corresponding time information.
6. 100s after the sampling (t0 + T), the according trigger conditions are
evaluated from the input information available from all modules. If a trigger
condition is fulfilled, the processing of a command list is started (e.g.
changing of output levels of the output modules). After one command list is
processed the next trigger condition follows again, etc.
7. List of commands and trigger conditions (created automatically by the test
module of the OMICRON Test Universe or customer-specific by CMEngine).
8. In the next 100s time-slot (t0 + 2T) the new output states are sent to all
output modules. Inside of the output modules an additional module-specific
delay can occur (e.g. a few ms response times if physical relays are present).

CMB IO-7 synchronized with CMC 156/256

If the CMB IO-7 test unit is configured to work in synchronized operation with a
CMC test set, the processing sequence inclusive the evaluation of the trigger
conditions by CMB IO-7 and CMC (steps 1 to 6) is the same as the sequence
described in the section above (see Figure 5-4).
Exception:
The processing of the command list (see steps 6 and 7) is delayed by one 100s
time-slot, namely in the time-slot t0 + 2T.

6.1 General Information about the IO Modules

The CMB IO-7 test unit can be equipped with a maximum of 7 IO modules. The
test unit can be upgraded with additional IO modules at a later time by the
manufacturer. For contact addresses please refer to section OMICRON
Contact Addresses on page 69.
Each IO module has a 40-pole module connector for the connection of the test
objects to the CMB IO-7 test unit. For these 40-pole module connectors the
PLUSCON-VC industry plug connection system of Phoenix Contact is used (see
also section 4.3.2 40-pole Module Connector on page 29).
In order to avoid unintentional confusion of the connecting cables for different
module types, the module connectors of the modules on the CMB IO-7 device
side are coded. The corresponding module connectors for the cable side, which
are supplied from the factory, are already correctly coded. For more detailed
information, please refer to the module-specific descriptions in this section and
to Section Coding the module connectors on page 33.

6.2.2

Technical Description INP1-24

The input module INP1-24 consists of 24 binary inputs with an input voltage
range of up to 300V. The 24 inputs are divided into 2 galvanicly separated
potential groups with 12 inputs each.
The following parameters can be configured independently for both potential
groups (same settings for all 12 inputs of one potential group):

potential-free (dry) or potential-sensing (wet) operation with input voltages of

up to 0 to +300VDC

switch threshold for potential-sensing operation

debounce and deglitch times

At the terminals A1 (-) and A2 (+) of the module connector the AUX DC voltage
(0...264VDC) is available. More detailed information can be found in Section
4.4 AUX DC Connection Point on page 34 and 3.2.1 AUX DC (DC Supply for
Test Objects) on page 21.

Potential-free operation
When in potential-free operation the conditions of dry contacts (e.g. relay,
opened or closed contact) are evaluated as input information.
The configured operating mode is valid for all 12 inputs of one potential group.
Note:

Figure 6-2:
Basic circuit diagram of
the input circuit for
potential-free operation

The inputs are internally equipped with input capacitors to avoid

possible cross-feeding between inputs, which could be caused, for
instance, when connecting long leads. Due to this, it is recommended
to use a normally open contact for the generation of the triggering input
edge. If a normally closed contact is used, an additional delay occurs,
because after the opening of the contact at the input, the input
capacitor is first charged via the internal voltage source and the source
resistance before the input state can be compared with an internal
switch threshold (approx. 8.8V).
