commonlyabbreviatedtoDSG,[2][3]isanelectronicallycontrolled
dualclutch[2]multipleshaftmanualgearbox,inatransaxledesign
withoutaconventionalclutchpedal,[4]andwithfullautomatic,[2]or
semimanualcontrol.Thefirstactualdualclutchtransmissions
derivedfromPorscheinhousedevelopmentfor962racingcarsin
the1980s.
Insimpleterms,aDSGistwoseparatemanualgearboxes(and
clutches),containedwithinonehousing,andworkingasoneunit.[2]
[3][5]ItwasdesignedbyBorgWarner,[4]andislicensedtothe
VolkswagenGroup,withsupportbyIAVGmbH.Byusingtwo
independentclutches,[2][5]aDSGcanachievefastershifttimes,[2][5]
andeliminatesthetorqueconverterofaconventionalepicyclic
automatictransmission.[2]

ThefirstDSGtransaxlethatwentintoproductionfortheVolkswagenGroupmainstreammarqueshadsix
forwardspeeds(andonereverse),[6][7]andusedwet/submergedmultiplateclutchpacks[2][4](Volkswagen
Groupinternalcode:DQ250,partscodeprefix:02E).[7][8]Ithasbeenpairedtoengineswithupto350Nm
(260lbft)oftorque,[6][7]andthetwowheeldriveversionweighs93kg(205lb).Itismanufacturedat
VolkswagenGroup'sKasselplant,[2]withadailyproductionoutputof1,500units.[6]
Atthestartof2008,anotherworldfirst,[6]anadditional70kg(150lb)sevenspeedDSGtransaxle[6]

notablymoreplatesthelargerouterclutch(fortheoddnumberedgears)uses10plates,whereasthe
smallerinnerclutch(drivingevennumberedgearsandreverse)uses12plates.[14]Anothernotablechange
overtheoriginaltransverseDSGsisthelubricationsystem[15][16]Audinowutilisetwototallyseparate
oilcircuits.[14]Oneoilcircuit,consistingof7.5litres(1.65impgal1.98USgal),lubricatesthehydraulic

DSGcontrols
Thedirectshiftgearboxusesafloormountedtransmissionshiftlever,verysimilartothatofaconventional
automatictransmission.[10]Theleverisoperatedinastraight'foreandaft'plane(withoutany'dogleg'
offsetmovements),andusesanadditionalbuttontohelppreventaninadvertentselectionofan
inappropriateshiftleverposition.

Ppositionofthefloormountedgearshiftlevermeansthatthetransmissionissetin"Park".Bothclutch
packsarefullydisengaged,allgearsetsaredisengaged,andasolidmechanicaltransmission'lock'is
appliedtothecrownwheeloftheDSG'sinternaldifferential.Thispositionmustonlybeusedwhenthe
motorvehicleisstationary.Furthermore,thisisthepositionwhichmustbesetontheshiftleverbeforethe
vehicleignitionkeycanberemoved.

Npositionofthefloormountedshiftlevermeansthatthetransmissionisin"neutral".SimilartoPabove,
bothclutchpacksandallgearsetsarefullydisengagedhowever,theparkinglockisalsodisengaged.

Whilstthemotorvehicleisstationaryandinneutral(N),thedrivercanselectDfor"drive"(afterfirst
pressingthefootbrakepedal).Thetransmission'sreversegearisselectedonthefirstshaftK1,[3]andthe
outerclutchK2engagesatthestartofthe'bitepoint'.Atthesametime,onthealternategearshaft,the
reversegearclutchK1isalsoselected[2][3](preselected),asthegearboxdoesn'tknowwhetherthedriver
wantstogoforwardorreverse.Theclutchpackforsecondgear(K2)getsreadytoengage.Whenthedriver
releasesthebrakepedal,theK2clutchpackincreasestheclampingforce,allowingthesecondgeartotake
upthedrivethroughanincreaseofthe'bitepoint',andtherebytransferringthetorquefromtheengine
throughthetransmissiontothedriveshaftsandroadwheels,causingthevehicletomoveforward.
Depressingtheacceleratorpedalengagestheclutchandcausesanincreaseofforwardvehiclespeed.
Pressingthethrottlepedaltothefloor(hardacceleration)willcausethegearboxto"kickdown"tofirstgear
toprovidetheaccelerationassociatedwithfirst,althoughtherewillbeaslighthesitationwhilethegearbox
deselectssecondgearandselectsfirstgear.Asthevehicleaccelerates,thetransmission'scomputer
determineswhenthesecondgear(whichisconnectedtothesecondclutch)shouldbefullyused.Depending
onthevehiclespeedandamountofenginepowerbeingrequestedbythedriver(determinedbytheposition
ofthethrottlepedal),[4]theDSGthenupshifts.Duringthissequence,theDSGdisengagesthefirstouter
clutchwhilstsimultaneouslyengagingthesecondinnerclutch[2][3][4](allpowerfromtheengineisnow
goingthroughthesecondshaft),thuscompletingtheshiftsequence.Thissequencehappensin
8milliseconds(aidedbypreselection),[3][4]andcanhappenevenwithfullthrottleopening,andasaresult,
thereisvirtuallynopowerloss.[2][4]

Oncethevehiclehascompletedtheshifttosecondgear,thefirstgearisimmediatelydeselected,andthird
gear(beingonthesameshaftas1stand5th)ispreselected,[2][3][4]andispending.Oncethetimecomesto
shiftinto3rd,thesecondclutchdisengagesandthefirstclutchreengages.[2]Thismethodofoperation
continuesinthesamemannerfortheremainingforwardgears.
Downshiftingissimilartoupshiftingbutinreverseorder,andisslower,at600milliseconds,duetothe
engine'sElectronicControlUnit,orECU,needingto'blip'thethrottlesothattheenginecrankshaftspeed
canmatchtheappropriategearshaftspeed.[2][4]Thecar'scomputersensesthecarslowingdown,ormore
powerrequired(duringacceleration),andthusengagesalowergearontheshaftnotinuse,andthen
completesthedownshift.
TheactualshiftpointsaredeterminedbytheDSG'stransmissionECU,whichcommandsahydro
mechanicalunit.[2]ThetransmissionECU,combinedwiththehydromechanicalunit,arecollectively
calleda"mechatronics"[2]unitormodule.BecausetheDSG'sECUuses"fuzzylogic",theoperationofthe
DSGissaidtobe"adaptive"thatis,theDSGwill"learn"howtheuserdrivesthecar,andwill
progressivelytailortheshiftpointsaccordinglytosuitthehabitsofthedriver.
Inthevehicleinstrumentdisplay,betweenthespeedometerandtachometer,theavailableshiftlever
positionsareshown,thecurrentpositionoftheshiftleverishighlighted(emboldened),andthecurrentgear
ratioinuseisalsodisplayedasanumber.
Under"normal",progressiveandlinearaccelerationanddeceleration,theDSGshiftsina"sequential"
manner,i.e.underacceleration:1st>2nd>3rd>4th>5th>6thandthesamesequencereversedfor
deceleration.However,theDSGcanalsoskipthenormalsequentialmethod,by'missingout'adjacent
gears,andshifttwoormoregears.[3]Thisismostapparentifthecarisbeingdrivenatsedatespeedsinone
ofthehighergearswithalightthrottleopening,andtheacceleratorpedalisthenpresseddown,engaging
the"kickdown"function.Duringkickdown,theDSGwillskipgears,[10]shiftingdirectlytothemost
appropriategeardependingonspeedandthrottleopening.Thiskickdownmaybeengagedbyany
increasedacceleratorpedalopening,andiscompletelyindependentoftheadditionalresistancetobefound
whenthepedalispressedfullytothefloor,whichwillactivateasimilarkickdownfunctionwhenin
Manualoperationmode.Thesevenspeedunitinthe2007Audivariantswillnotautomaticallyshiftto6th
gearrather,itstaysat5thtokeeppoweravailableatahighRPMwhilecruising.
WhenthefloormountedgearselectorleverisinpositionD,theDSGworksinfullyautomaticmode,[3][5]
withemphasisplacedongearshiftsprogrammedtodelivermaximumfueleconomy.[3][10]Thatmeansthat
shiftswillchangeupanddownveryearlyintherevrange.Asanexample,ontheVolkswagenGolfMk5
GTI,sixthgearwillbeengagedaround52km/h(32mph),wheninitiallyusingtheDSGtransmissionwith
the'default'ECUadaptationalthoughwithan"aggressive"or"sporty"drivingstyle,theadaptiveshift
patternwillincreasethevehiclespeedatwhichsixthgearengages.

ThefloorselectorleveralsohasanSposition.[2]WhenSisselected,"sport"mode[2]isactivatedinthe
DSG.Sportmodestillfunctionsasafullyautomaticmode,[3]identicalinoperationto"D"mode,but
upshiftsanddownshiftsaremademuchhigheruptheenginerevrange.[2][3][10]Thisaidsamoresporty
drivingmanner,[2]byutilisingconsiderablymoreoftheavailableenginepower,andalsomaximising

Tochangeupagear,theleverispushedforward(againstaspringpressure)towardsthe"+",andtochange
down,theleverispulledrearwardtowardsthe"".TheDSGtransmissioncannowbeoperatedwiththe
gearchangesbeing(primarily)determinedbythedriver.Thismethodofoperationiscommonlycalled
"tiptronic".[2]Intheinterestsofenginepreservation,whenacceleratinginManual/tiptronicmode,theDSG
willstillautomaticallychangeupjustbeforetheredline,andwhendecelerating,itwillchangedown
automaticallyatverylowrevs,justbeforetheengineidlespeed(tickover).Furthermore,ifthedrivercalls
foragearwhenitisnotappropriate(e.g.:requestingadownshiftwhenenginespeedisneartheredline)the
DSGwillnotchangetothedriver'srequestedgear.[3]
CurrentvariantsoftheDSGwillstilldownshifttothelowestpossiblegearratiowhenthekickdownbutton
isactivatedduringfullthrottlewhilstinmanualmode.InManualmodethiskickdownisonlyactivatedby
anadditionalbuttonatthebottomoftheacceleratorpedaltravelunlessthisispressedtheDSGwillnot
downshift,andwillsimplyperformafullthrottleaccelerationinwhatevergearwaspreviouslybeing
utilised.

Initiallyavailableoncertainhighpoweredcars,andthosewitha"sporty"trimlevelsuchasthoseusing
the2.0TFSIand3.2/3.6VR6engines[2]steeringwheelmountedpaddleshifters[3][5]wereavailable.
However,thesearenowbeingoffered(eitherasastandardinclusivefitment,orasafactoryoptionalextra)
onvirtuallyallDSGequippedcars,throughoutallmodelranges,includinglesserpoweroutput
applications,suchasthe105PSVolkswagenGolfPlus.[10]
Theseoperateinanidenticalmannerasthefloormountedshiftleverwhenitisplacedacrossthegatein
manualmode.Thepaddleshiftershavetwodistinctadvantages:thedrivercansafelykeepbothhandson
thesteeringwheelwhenusingtheManual/tiptronicmodeandthedrivercantemporarilymanuallyoverride
eitheroftheautomaticprogrammes(DorS),[10]andgaininstantmanualcontroloftheDSGtransmission
[10](withintheabovedescribedconstraints).
Ifthepaddleshiftactivatedmanualoverrideofoneoftheautomaticmodes(DorS)isusedintermittently
theDSGtransmissionwilldefaultbacktothepreviouslyselectedautomaticmodeafterapredetermined
durationofinactivityofthepaddles,orwhenthevehiclebecomesstationary.Alternatively,shouldthe
driverwishtoimmediatelyreverttofullyautomaticcontrol,thiscanbedonebyactivatingandholdingthe
"+"paddle[10]foratleasttwoseconds.

TherecallhasbeenextendedtoJapanwith91,000(VWandAudiusingthesameDSG)beingrecalled.[39]

13daysaftertheSingaporerecall,VolkswagenMalaysiaalsoannouncedarecallforthe7speedDSG.No
officialstatementwasreleasedbythecompany,butitwasstatedthatatotalof3,962wereinvolvedinthe
unitrecallexerciseunitsproducedbetweenJune2010andJune2011,withaffectedvehiclesbeingGolf,
Polo,Scirocco,CrossTouran,PassatandJettamodelsequippedwiththetransmission.[40]
