Themainadvantageofalimitedslipdifferentialisdemonstratedbyconsideringthecaseofastandard(or
"open")differentialinoffroadingorsnowsituationswhereonewheelbeginstosliporlosecontactwith
theground.Insuchacasewithastandarddifferential,theslippingornoncontactingwheelwillreceivethe
majorityofthepower,whilethecontactingwheelwillremainstationarywiththeground.Thetorque
transmittedwillbeequalatbothwheels,andtherefore,willnotexceedthethresholdoftorqueneededto
movethewheelwithtraction.Inthissituation,alimitedslipdifferentialpreventsexcessivepowerfrom
beingallocatedtoonewheel,andtherebykeepingbothwheelsinpoweredrotation.TheadvantagesofLSD
inhighpower,rearwheeldriveautomobilesweredemonstratedduringtheUnitedStates"MuscleCar"era
fromthemid1960sthroughtheearly1970s.Itsoonbecameapparentthat"MuscleCars"withLSDor
"posi"wereatadistinctadvantagetotheirwheelspinningcounterparts.

typeoflimitedslipdifferentialtypicallygetsitsnamefromthedesignofthisresistingmechanism.
ExamplesincludeviscousandclutchbasedLSDs.Theamountoflimitingtorqueprovidedbythese
mechanismsvariesbydesignandisdiscussedlaterinthearticle.

Whentravelinginastraightline,whereonewheelstartstoslip(andspinfasterthanthewheelwith
