PM Bainimarama Invites Fijians In

Canada To Invest In Fiji

By Asuad Ali

Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama has

invited Fijians in Canada to invest in Fiji.
In his first major speech of his first visit
to Canada, he told Fijians in British
Columbia: You are still valuable
members of our great Fijian family.
You deserve the opportunities Fiji now
offers, and Fiji needs your talent, your
experience, and your investment.
Mr Bainimarama said Fiji would welcome
the talent and expertise they could bring
to assist his Government in addressing
improvements in health, education,
protection of our environment and
infrastructure development, to name a few.
Mr Bainimarama was speaking at a
dinner hosted by Fijian businessman
Peter Raju, President and CEO of Peace
Arch Duty Free shop. Peace Arch Duty
is the largest land boarder duty free shop
in North America.
Among the guests were the Federal Defence
Minister Jason Kenney, former Supreme
Court Justice and Attorney-General Wally
Oppal, executive assistant to the Mayor of
Richmond Alexa Loo, Provincial Speaker
of the House Linda Reed, British Columbia
Justice Minister and Attorney-General
Susan Anton and other ministers.
We have come a long way from the
troubled times of 1987 and 2000. As
we have moved for the better we invite
Fijians to come to Fiji for investments
and travel, said Mr Bainimarama.
We have lost hundreds to migration but
let me remind you Fiji has been their
home and will always be one.
The Government encourages Fijians to
come back home. We promise peace and
prosperity.
Mr Bainimarama, who earlier visited a
Fijian business in Delta, BC, said Fijians
were hardworking people and they had
contributed immensely to the Canadian
economy and culture.
He called on the Fijian and other
business sector to invest in Fiji as there
was that window of opportunity like
never before.
Were diverse and inclusive. Ive heard
good things just into Day One of my trip
and I dont doubt there are many more
great stories.
Minister for Industry, Trade and Tourism
Faiyaz Siddiq Koya, who is on the tour
with the PM, praised Fijian/Canadians
for their warm welcome.
Theyve left Fiji but Fiji has never

Mahendra Chaudhry Master Politician

Mahendra Chaudhry has again stamped
his mark as a master politician.
He did not step down as leader of the Fiji
Labour Party as earlier expected.
Instead he left it to the delegates to
decide, even though he had earlier said
he was ready to hand over the reins to
someone else.
But his successor could not be found so
he agreed to stay on. That came as no
surprise. It was the worst kept secret that
no one was being groomed.
The ones that could have succeeded him
like Felix Anthony had defected from the
party to other political parties because
they disagreed with his leadership style.
Mr Anthony went on to form the Peoples
Democratic Party (PDP).
In politics there is usually no such thing
as succession planning where future
leaders are groomed to take over one
day. It is very much an individual desire
and effort.
Mr Chaudhry, 73, is a shrewd politician.

604.510.4088

As he looked around he knew there was

no one present with his caliber to take
over. These are his die-hard supporters
who have stuck with him during his
rollercoaster political journey, from the
sugar cane belts to the towns and cities.
2014 Allegations
He claimed the 2014 election was
carefully orchestrated, the entire election
machinery starting with the imposed
2013 Constitution, the Voter Registration
and Political Parties Decree and later the
Electoral Decree were all manipulated to
ensure that the status quo, in place since
2009, continued after the elections.
The FLP and PDP failed to win a seat.
The independent election monitors, the
Multinational Observer Group, ruled the
election was transparent, fair and credible.
Mr Chaudhrys original announcement
to say he was going to relinquish his
leadership was in fact a call to let everyone
know that Im here. We will see you in
2018.

Consumer Council Receives Complaints

Worth $1.6M

The Consumer Council of Fiji recorded

a total of 803 complaints worth around
$1.6 million in the last six months.
Council chief executive Premila Kumar
said an average of 134 complaints per
month was filed with them and they
have successfully managed to give
back $0.5 million to the consumers by
resolving 620 complaints through robust
mediation.
Consumers were let down on a number
of fronts, among which electronic goods,
mobile products, landlord/tenancy, food
& drinks and hardware make the top five
complaints in the period, 1 January 2015
to 30 June 2015.
In absence of the necessary standards
in place to safeguard consumers against
shoddy and counterfeit products, poor
quality and counterfeit electronic goods
and mobile products will remain a
problem among the Fijian consumers.
Our local markets are flooded
with electronic goods and gadgets,
available at knock-down prices, which
are repackaged, refurbished or are
counterfeits of the original brands. 107
complaints related to electronic goods,
mostly home brands were recorded in
the six monthly period, with aggrieved

consumers crying foul over the aftersale service offered to them by the retail
outlets.
She said in a number of these cases,
consumers have experienced non availability of spare parts, no backup
service, the run-around to get the newlypurchased item fixed and no sense of
care to explain the terms and conditions
of the agreement.
Long waiting period to get the faulty
items repaired or replaced remains a
dilemma for the consumers. In some
cases, consumers have waited 6 to 8
months to get back their item from
the traders who had taken the item for
repairs. Then, there are cases where
retail outlets end up repairing the items
3 to 6 times, not having proper back up
service.
The Councils market surveillance
reveals that some of these electronic
goods are reconditioned to be as good as
new.
Consumers dont have the know how
to find out which item is refurbished and
which is a new brand it goes beyond
just checking for dents and functionality.
Hence, traders must provide full
disclosures about the items. The upsurge

of consumer complaints related to

mobile phone handsets and gadgets have
been in the public eye for a while now.
With 88 complaints filed just in the
last six months, consumers continue
to be duped with fake, counterfeit and
refurbished products. Like electronic
goods, these products come with no spare
parts, no up to date back up service,
low quality battery and charger, screen
instruction appearing on the phone turns
into a foreign (Chinese) language.
The warranty terms and conditions are
printed in very fine prints. Some mobile
phone outlets which are born overnight in the corner streets of our towns
and cities hardly bother to provide full
disclosures about the products, let alone,
provide warranty terms and condition to
the consumers.
With mid-year sale and discounts and
the Hibiscus festivity next month,
the Council envisages an increase in
complaints relating to mobile phone
handsets/gadgets and electronic goods.
Some traders would try to clear their
old stock, near-expiring food items and
other products; therefore, the Council is
urging consumers to exercise vigilance
and prudence.

The Fijian and Saudi Arabian

Governments
have
established
diplomatic relations and are keen to
work closely in areas of cooperation.
Saudi Arabias Permanent Representative
to the United Nations, Ambassador
Abdallah Yahya Al-Mouallimi, and his
Fijian counterpart, Ambassador Peter
Thomson signed a protocol and joint
communiqu establishing diplomatic
relations between the two Governments.
The
communiqu
conveys
the
agreement of both States for their
diplomatic relations to be guided by
mutual willingness to develop and
strengthen friendship and cooperation
in accordance with the principles and
norms enshrined in the Charter of the
United Nations, international law, and
the Vienna convention on diplomatic
relations.
Following the formalization ceremony,
Ambassadors
Al-Mouallimi
and

Thomson held talks on areas of common

interest between their two countries
and areas of cooperation at the United
Nations.
Fijis long service in the cause of United
Nations peacekeeping in the Middle East

was acknowledged with great respect.

Also discussed was the growing interregional cooperation between the
countries of the Gulf Cooperation
Council and the Pacific Small Islands
Developing States.

RFMF In Good Hands - Tikoitoga

Brigadier-General Mosese Tikoitoga has
assured that the Republic of Fiji Military
Forces is in good hands under Acting
Commander, Commodore Viliame
Naupoto.
Former Commander spoke for the first
time after his resignation last Friday.
Commodore Naupoto is a very capable
officer and is a very senior officer in the
RFMF. Over the last few months, weve
worked together and I know that he can
take over the reins very quickly and lead
the RFMF into new heights, he said.
Also the support of the other senior
officers who Ive spoken to on Friday is
very intact. The support will maintain the
standard, the customs and traditions of
RFMF and also raising it to new heights.
For that Im very grateful, Im very clear
in my conscience as I leave the RFMF,
there are more capable people that can
pick up the job and maintain the integrity
of the institution.
Brigadier-General Tikoitoga resigned
last Friday effective immediately.
During a press conference at the RFMF
headquarters at Berkeley Crescent in
Suva, he said: Its also easier for me
to leave because of the capability in the
RFMF. There are a lot of good people
around, very capable people and Im
sure they can do a better job than I and
Im happy to leave the RFMF in good
hands, thats made it easier for me to
choose the path that Ive chosen.
Despite the restructure
Despite the restructure within the RFMF,
Brigadier-General Tikoitoga was certain
of the loyalty of officers and other rank
and file.
The men are used to changing
commands within their new units or the
overseas missions they go to. They adapt
and adjust to new leadership and there
are no security concerns for Fiji at all.
I think we are more secure now with the
new acting commander and the new crop
of officers that are currently holding the
RFMF together. There is no reason for
any concern. If anything, youre in better
hands now than you were in before.
Brigadier-General Tikoitoga will begin
his induction training at the Ministry
of Foreign Affairs next Monday as he
prepares his new diplomatic posting.
He is likely to be posted as Fiji High
Commissioner to South Africa in
Pretoria, replacing incumbent Ben
Salacakau.
He said he finally made the decision

604.510.4088

to resign after several consultations

with his family and the Prime Minister,
Voreqe Bainimarama.
Personal ambition
In the last few months Ive been
contemplating going on a diplomatic
posting. Theres always been a personal
ambition of mine that I can be considered
for a diplomatic post. An opportunity
arose, therere some embassies changing
this year. After some consultation with
my family, I applied for the post.
Brigadier-General Tikoitoga has served
in the RFMF for 33 years and 8 months.
Rumours dismissed
On rumours about Attorney-General
Aiyaz Sayed Khaiyum, he said:
Unfortunately, Fiji now thrives on

rumours, something Im sure the ladies

and gentlemen of the media do not get
involved in. But we cannot control what
goes in social media.
Its most unfortunate these rumours
are spread, they are all false. As you
know the honourable PM is very much
in charge, the A-G has played a pivotal
role in the construct of our government
and the way our government will run in
the future and we have to give him credit
for it.
The RFMF is very stable, were all still
very good friends and Im leaving with
fond memories of the institution.
I know itll be taken over by better
people who can rise above the occasion
to lead the RFMF into the future.

Over 3000 Rheumatic Heart Cases

Approximately 60 people die each year
from rheumatic heart disease.
Although there are 3,500 cases listed
in the Ministry of Healths database,
this is a significant under estimation of
the actual number of rheumatic heart
patients in the country.
The high risk group of developing
rheumatic heart disease is between the
ages of five to 15 years-old.
At this age most are vulnerable to acute
rheumatic fever that leads to Rheumatic
Heart Disease.
Minister of Health Jone Usamate says
there are some alarming statistics on how
rheumatic heart disease affects children
in this country.
The stats that we had I think in the
project that weve had around 12,000
children screened between the ages of
five to 15 years, and what the data is
showing that out of every 100 children
theres about 2.8 that have it, that has the
rheumatic heart disease. So this can lead
to complications and can even lead to
death, so 2.8 out of every hundred thats
a lot of children. The way I was told to
think about this is almost
one in 30, Usamate said.
He says parents need to also understand
how symptoms like a sore throat can
often lead to something more serious.
So I think the message out to mothers
and the public if your children are having
sore throats you need to take them to the
health people so they can try to identify
and treat them as early as possible so
they dont progress to the worst parts of
the disease when it begins to affect your
heart and there are so many children
passing away, so a sore throat a swelling
in the throat should not be something
that should be treated lightly.
Rates of acute rheumatic fever have
remained stable in many developing
countries over the years.

Mechanic Mourns Death Of Daughter

Navua mechanic Vijendra Singh, 45, is
trying to come to terms with the death
of his eldest daughter, 21-year-old
Rashmita Singh, nicknamed Jijji.
Rashmita had left home in Navua last
Saturday afternoon for a trip to Sigatoka
Town with her cousin-brother without
her parents knowledge.
Police have reported that their vehicle
went off the road and hit a coconut tree
near Navola Village on the Coral Coast
on Saturday night.
It was reported that Rashmita died from

injuries received during the accident.

Mr Singh said he stayed up the whole of
Saturday night waiting for his daughter
to return.
We were together at home last Saturday
afternoon and her cousin brother from
Lautoka came for a visit and we all did
not know where she went to, he said.
He said at about 2am his cousin drove
up home and told him about the accident
and his daughters death.
Meanwhile mother Viema Lewatinis
wailing filled the house as she mourned:

Isa na luvequ, Jijji, na cava o lai

cakava?(Oh My child, what did you go
and do).
Police spokesperson Inspector Atunaisa
Sokomuri said that the accident took
place at about 8pm and the 21-year-old
became the latest road fatality.
He said Police were once again urging
drivers and motorists to be careful on the
roads especially during rainy weather.
Our current road death toll now stands at
34 compared to 30 for the same period
last year.

Air NZ To Provide Two New Routes

Air New Zealand hopes to provide Fijian

exporters with new routes with a launch
later this year.
The airline will be flying from Auckland to
Houston (USA) and Auckland to Buenos
Aires (Argentina) from December.
Given its already-existing direct NadiAuckland flight, the introduction of
these further connections will open up
new market access for our exporters.
Air New Zealand Cargo Sales manager,
Pradip Singh, said hopefully the new
routes will allow Fijian exporters to
continue expanding markets with direct
and faster route to those destinations.
He said in South America, theres a big
market for Aquarium fish (live tropical fish).
Currently we finding it difficult in
carrying cargo to places like Argentina
and other areas, he said.
So when we will go to Buenos Aires, we
have short connections partnership with
other airlines which has many flights out
to all South American destinations and
this will help exporters.
It will be cheaper and it will give them
shorter window because like live fish has
got a very critical window, Mr Singh
said.
Once its packed in the boxes and
oxygenated, the departure and arrivals
should be as short as possible and this is
an answer for them.

More Fijians For NZ Work Scheme But

NZ Unions Disagree

A total of 1,500 Fijians are expected to

be given seasonal work in New Zealand
next year.
Director of the National Center for
Employment Viliame Cagilaba says this
is a significant increase from the current
quota of thirty employers.
He adds the boost in numbers will
come into effect next year when Fiji is
projected to be given full inclusion in the
Recognised Seasonal Employer Scheme.
First priority given to the New Zealanders,
they already given 9,000 we are targeting
1,500 for Fiji, said director, National
Center for Employment, Viliame Cagilaba.
And trade unions in New Zealand
say they oppose any expansion of the
Recognised Seasonal Employer scheme.
The criticism from New Zealands
Council of Trade Unions comes as talks
on the PACER Plus regional trade deal

resume in Samoa, with more seasonal

work a critical element in getting the
island nations on-board.
The CTUs Bill Rosenberg says the
scheme is threatening to make Pacific

workers a dominant source of employees

in the industry.
He adds New Zealands RSE scheme could
be under more pressure given Australias
plans to expand its seasonal program.

Police Investigate Assault Of Elderly Woman

The physical assault on an elderly
woman in Nadi is now at the center of a
police investigation.
The assault was captured on camera by
her neighbour who is also her grandson.
The footage of the 86-year-old Seema
Chalam Reddy assaulted by a woman
was taken by Shavikash Reddy in Nasau,
Nadi and uploaded on Facebook.
It has since come under the investigation
of police after the elderly woman was
taken to the police station for assistance.
While details of what led to this assault
isnt clear, what is apparent is the elderly

woman was assaulted.

The 86-year-old Seema Chalam Reddy is
safely at the house of her grand-son, Reddy.
Reddy took this footage from his own
house and we asked him why he didnt
interfere.
The reason is that lady has taken out
a DVRO (Domestic Violence Restraint
Order) against us so we cant go near
their place. So we cant stop anything
from happening, so the reason is if we go
there, there might be a problem as well,
said her grandson, Shavikash Reddy.
Reddy says his grandmother has age

related memory loss and cant recall

details of what happens to her.
He adds, he had to take this footage in
order to lodge a Police report.
We are taking this matter very seriously
and we hope to put justice to our
grandmother because we had put her
there, thinking she was in very safe
hands but what has happened is not right,
not right at all, Reddy said.
The video has watched more than 25,000
times within 10 hours of being uploaded
on Facebook.
Nadi police are investigating the matter.

1000 Treated By Taiwan Medical Team

The Taiwan Cathay General Hospital
Medical Mobile Service team treated
about 1000 patients during their visit to
Fiji last week.
Cathay General Hospital Professor
and Chief Otolaryngology Dr Pa-Chun
Wang said the team returned to Taiwan
last Thursday.
They spent two days in Suva screening
Yat Sen Primary School and Marist
Brothers High School students before
spending six days at the Sigatoka
Hospital screening and treating patients
in the West.
Using the hospital as a base, the team
from Taipei screened and treated
members of the public for free as part of
their Healing and Hope Taiwan Cathay
Heart and Hearing Mission to Fiji.
The team consisted of four doctors in ear,
nose and throat (ENT), a cardiologist,
two nurses and a pharmacist.
It is a worthy note that the ENT
doctors brought sophisticated STORZ
endoscopic equipment and performed
18 endoscopic ear surgeries for patients
with middle ear infection. The treatment
is believed to be the first time in Fiji, Dr
Wang said.
He said the cardiologist also brought
a sophisticated portable heart echo
machine that helped local doctors
to diagnose many suspected cardiac
diseases.
We intend to establish a long-term
service model in this area for the
continuation of care for the local
people, he said.

Customer Left With Big Bill After Suv

Stolen From Auto Shop

When you leave your vehicle overnight

with a repair shop, you expect it to
be there in the morning. But a Metro
Vancouver man was left with a $3,000
repair bill after his vehicle was stolen
from a local Broco Auto Glass.
Zach Hamill, a pro hockey player from
Port Coquitlam, was trying to import his
SUV but needed to fix the windshield
first so it would pass inspection.
He left his uninsured vehicle locked
inside the Langley Broco Auto Glass
shop to get fixed. But the next morning,
he got a disturbing phone call.
"They just said they have some bad
news, your car was stolen last night," he
explained.
Theives had broken into the auto glass
shop, grabbed the keys to Hamills
Cadillac and rammed it straight through
the garage door. The thieves then took
Hamills uninsured SUV on a 24-hour
joyride.
Shortly after, Hamill spotted his vehicle
driving by in Maple Ridge and called
police. When RCMP stopped the

vehicle it was full of cigarette butts and

drug paraphernalia. The vehicle had
thousands of dollars damage.
Hamill assumed Broco would pay to fix
it, since it wasn't his fault the vehicle was
stolen. But Broco's insurance company
denied the claim.
"It was their assertion that there was
no negligence on the part of the shop
operator. He had taken all reasonable
safeguards to protect the vehicle and
unfortunately both became victims of
crime," said Dennis Ostler, company
spokesperson.
Broco says Hamills vehicle should have
been insured. If it was, ICBC would
have covered the damage.
The shop operator did offer to cover the
cost to replace the windshield, which is
worth around $300. But Hamill feels that
wasnt enough.
"I just told them, I think you guys are
being unfair. I dropped my car off
with you guys, I trusted you guys. You
are a major million dollar company,
said Hamill, I think they should be

responsible for the damage. Im not

asking for anything else.
Hamill did inform Broco that his vehicle
was uninsured and he expected them
to take care of it accordingly. But in
denying the claim Broco's insurance
provider, ICBC, ruled that the shop
did everything that a reasonable person
would do to protect the customer's
vehicle. It doesn't appear that the shop
was negligent. This would mean that
the customer's own insurance would be
responsible to cover the theft of their
vehicle."
When it comes to other automotive
shops, insurance policies range from
place to place. Some shops have
insurance that would cover car break-ins
or stolen vehicles inside their premises.
Others only had insurance for accidents
caused by their mechanics, but were not
covered for the contents of customers
vehicles.
The bottom line is it pays to ask questions
at your auto repair shop before leaving
your vehicle overnight.

Leg Amputated After Escalator Horror

A cleaner's leg has been amputated
after it became stuck in an escalator in a
Shanghai mall - less than a week after a
mother was killed when she fell through
an escalator floor plate in a similar freak
accident.
The 35-year-old man, surnamed Zhang,
was a cleaner at the Cloud Nine shopping
mall in Shanghai's Zhongshan Park, state
media said.
He cried out for help, shouting his leg
was broken, according to Xinmin.cn, the
website of the Xinmin Evening News.
His calf was so severely injured doctors
had no alternative but to amputate the
leg.
Video surveillance footage shows him
cleaning with a mop before one of the
escalator's metal floor panels give way,
trapping his left lower leg.
Firefighters eventually rescued the man
and he was sent to hospital where his leg
was amputated from the calf down.
"The doctor said in order to prevent
the situation from getting worse, they
amputated his left calf," a family member
of the victim told Xinhua.
The mall and escalator maintenance
company are investigating the case.

604.510.4088

It was the third such tragedy in a week.

Last Sunday, 30-year-old mum Xiang
Liujuan was carrying her two-year-old
son when she stepped off the escalator
at the AZG Mall in Jingzhou in Hubei
province and fell through the floor plate.
She managed to push her son to safety but
she was killed by the machinery below.
An official investigation later revealed
the plates had worked themselves loose

and were improperly designed.

A day after the death, a toddler's left
hand was mangled when his arm became
trapped in an escalator at the Sun Square
Mall in Wuzhou, Guangxi.
The 1-year-old was reportedly with his
grandmother when he tripped and fell,
becoming caught in the moving steps.
Rescuers worked for half an hour to free
the boy, who was taken to hospital.

Twin Train Derailment Death Toll Hits 27

In Madhya Pradesh

Bodies of 27 passengers including 5

children have so far been recovered
from two express trains that derailed
simultaneously while crossing a bridge
on swollen river near Harda in Madhya
Pradesh on Tuesday night.
"11 bodies of men, 11 bodies of women
and bodies of 5 children have been
recovered so far and rescue operations
are underway," SP Harda Prem Babu
Sharma said.
Accident relief train reached the spot
and over 300 passengers were rescued
and sent to nearest stations with the help
of local administration, said sources.
Those killed include nine men, eight
women and five children. Two of them
reportedly died after being electrocuted
during the rescue effort in the twin tragedy.
Both Mumbai-Varanasi Kamayani Express
and Jabalpur-Mumbai Janata Express,
got derailed while crossing a bridge on
Machak River, near Khirkiya and Harda
station, about 160 kms from Bhopal.
Kamayani Express was the first to get
derailed at around 11:30 pm and Janata
Express met with the accident just a few
minutes later.
Railway authorities said the sudden
flow of water on the tracks caused the
derailment.
"We think tracks were breached because of
the flow of excessive water," said an officer.

Meanwhile a section has been closed

for any train movement. The accident
relief train has reached the spot and
several passengers have been brought to
a nearby station, Sinha added.
Harda district collector Rajnish
Srivastava said that incident took place
near Khirkiya and Harda station on
Machak River in which seven coaches

of Kamayani Express and three coaches

with the engine of Janata Express got
derailed.
"It seems that base material on the
tracks got washed away following heavy
rains when the two trains coming from
opposite directions on the Up and Down
tracks met with the accident almost
simultaneously," he said.

Monsoon Rains Bring Death And

Destruction

Rescue workers in south Asia are racing

to help tens of thousands of people after
floods.
Relentless monsoon rains have
triggered flash floods and landslides,
destroying thousands of houses,
farmland, bridges and roads, with
fast-flowing waters hampering relief
efforts.
Hundreds have perished in recent days
in India, Nepal, Pakistan, Burma and
Vietnam. In Burma, 46 people have
died and more than 200,000 have been
affected.
More than 100 people in India
and 109 in Pakistan have died. In
Vietnam, rescuers were battling toxic
mudslides from flood-hit coalmines
in the northern province of Quang
Ninh.

Man Fined For Illegally Importing Dried

Birds' Nests

A man caught illegally importing 68

dried birds' nests - a Chinese delicacy has been fined $15,000.
Tian Chi Lee, 40, from Auckland's
North Shore, appeared before Manukau
District Court last week after earlier
pleading guilty to knowingly attempting
to possess unauthorised goods.
Bird's nests are made from the saliva
secretions of the swiftlet bird. Swiftlets can
carry a number of significant avian diseases
not found in New Zealand, the Ministry for
Primary Industries (MPI) says.
The offending involved a package sent
from Malaysia in January marked as

biscuits and addressed to a "Mr David"

at an address on the North Shore.
The nests were discovered after MPI
x-ray equipment identified the package
contained organic material.
An investigation uncovered that "Mr
David" was Mr Lee. He admitted his
brother in Malaysia sent the nests with
a false declaration to a fictitious person
because both men knew they were not
allowed in New Zealand.
MPI spokesman Craig Hughes says the
nests can host serious avian diseases
such as Newcastle disease.
An outbreak of Newcastle disease

amongst poultry in New South Wales in

2001 cost the government $A26 million
to eradicate, and involved the mass
destructions of birds. Some of these
avian diseases could devastate native
bird species in New Zealand.
"New Zealand is fortunate not to have many
of the pests and diseases that affect other parts
of the world and this gives our agriculture
industry a competitive advantage.
"We have a robust biosecurity system in
place to stop these pests from making it
to New Zealand. Deliberately trying to
avoid this system creates a huge risk and
the fine reflects that."

Super Typhoon Soudelor has developed

into the world's most powerful storm of
the year as it takes aim at Japan, Taiwan
and China after trashing the Northern
Marianas last Sunday.
No deaths have been attributed to
Soudelor, but it left a trail of destruction
across the Marianas.
The main island of Saipan suffered its
first direct typhoon strike since 1968,
leaving the island without power for
weeks as the local power plant had its
roof partially torn off, a resident told
Pacific Daily News.
Petrol stations had long queues and
were rationing supplies, with some
establishments running on generators.
The Mariana's Variety was told it
may take weeks or months before the
Commonwealth Utilities Corp can fully
restore the electricity system.
Acting governor Ralph Torres declared
a "state of major disaster and significant
emergency" after it struck late on Sunday.
At least 1,500 people were being given
emergency food assistance while 500
were living in emergency shelters.
Soudelor also ripped roofs off houses
and left residents without water and
wastewater services.
John Hirsh from the American Red Cross
in Saipan said the storm caused the worst
damage to the Pacific island territory in
30 years.
"There's no power anywhere on the
island ... three to four weeks to restore the

power. There were probably three or four

hundred power poles collapsed during
the storm ... many roads impassable," he
told the media.
As it left the Mariana's, Typhoon Soudelor
roared across the western Pacific Ocean
and intensified, packing wind gusts up to
354 kilometres per hour according to the
Joint Typhoon Warning Centre, rating it
the maximum category five.
In Hagatna on neighbouring Guam, the
weather service warned boats to stay
away from exposed reefs and beaches

because of "hazardous surf" and "life

threatening" rip currents.
It said Soudelor would continue to intensify
as it swept across open water for the next
24 hours before starting to weaken.
It was expected to be down to category
four or three by the time it hit southern
Japan, Taiwan and China from late
Thursday.
Soudelor was stronger than Cyclone Pam,
the previous strongest storm of 2015,
which killed at least 15 people when it
slammed into Vanuatu five months ago.

Asylum Seeker School Student 'Dragged

On Ground', Put In Detention

Iranian asylum seekers say the

Government is putting them back into
detention because it cannot force them
to leave the country.
Over recent months, an undisclosed
number of Iranians have been taken from
their communities and put in detention.
Australia is still negotiating with Iran to
accept the return of its citizens who have
not been found to be refugees.
Brisbane high school student Mojgan
Shamsalipoor was put back in detention
for eight months, after spending more
than two years in the community and
marrying an Australian resident.
"It's very upsetting and hurtful because
we're just young and love each other and
all our dream was to live together and
make our life and be happy," she said.
Ms Shamsalipoor was moved from
the Brisbane Immigration Transit
Accommodation centre to detention in
Darwin on Friday, after speaking to the
ABC.
Her husband, Milad Jafari, said he did
not understand why his wife was moved
when she had family support and was
attending school in Brisbane.
"They were dragging her on the ground
and taking her to the interview room,
telling her she's going to be deported and
separated from the husband and she's not
going to be able to study anymore," he
said.
Mr Jafari said he was not allowed to say
goodbye to his wife, who he has been
visiting every day since she was redetained.
"I felt like a dead body," he said.
"Why can't I even talk to the person who
I love? I just want to calm her down. I
don't want her to get [panicked]."
Detention 'heartbreaking, extremely
disruptive': teachers
The Immigration Department said Ms
Shamsalipoor was moved to Darwin
for operational reasons, not because she
spoke to the ABC.
The relocation means Ms Shamsalipoor
is unable to continue her Year 12 studies
at Brisbane's Yeronga High School.
Teachers at the school were upset and
planning to protest against the move,
saying it was distressing.
"It is heartbreaking, it is extremely
disruptive, [Mojgan] will be emotionally
distraught right now," Yeronga High
School teacher Ken Myers said.
The department said it was trying to
resolve the cases of failed asylum seekers

who were living in the community
and expected them to leave Australia
voluntarily.
It said they can be detained and removed
if they don't cooperate.
Greens senator Sarah Hanson-Young
said the practice was inhumane.
"The Government's objective is to make
people feel so horrible, so helpless, that
they'll give up and go home," she said.
"Picking people up out of the community,
locking them up, moving them to remote
locations such as Wickham Point, is all
about forcing people to choose between

the hell of Iran or the hell of detention."

There are almost 7,000 Iranians who
came by boat living in the community on
bridging visas, but at least 265 have had
their refugee claims rejected, and some
have already been sent back to detention.
If Australia reaches an agreement with
Iran, Ms Shamsalipoor could be one of
the first scheduled to go back there.
"I told immigration that if that stage
come and they want to deport me, I will
kill myself before I go to Iran," she said.
"Die in peace is better than [to] die with
torture."

Sleeping Positions And Their Effects On

Health

Getting enough sleep is the most

important thing but did you know
that how you sleep can also impact
your health? Lets take a look at eight
common sleeping positions and what
they do to your body.
1. On Your Back, Arms at Sides
Sleeping on your back with your arms
at your side is generally considered to
be the best sleeping position for spine
health and its good for your neck, too, as
long as you dont use too many pillows.
That said, back sleepers tend to snore
more than those in any other position
and sleep apnea is strongly associated
with sleeping on the back.
2. On Your Back, Arms Up
This so-called starfish position is
also good for the back. Whether you
have your arms up around your pillow
or not, sleeping on your back may also
help to prevent facial wrinkles and skin
breakouts. However, like the arms-down
back sleeping position, this one can also
result in snoring and problems with acid
reflux. Plus, having your arms up can
put pressure on nerves in your shoulders,
leading to pain.
3. Face Down
Sleeping on your stomach can improve

digestion but unless youve developed

a way to breathe through your pillow, it
most likely leads to you tilting your face
in one direction or the other. This can put
a lot of strain on the neck. Sleeping face
down can also cause back pain, as the
curve of the spine is not supported.
4. Fetal Position
Sleeping all curled up into a ball with
your knees drawn up and your chin tilted
down might be comfortable but it can do
a number on your back and neck.
The extreme curl of the fetal position
can also restrict deep breathing. That
considered, sleeping like a fetus can
have you sleeping like a baby if you
typically have problems with snoring or
if youre pregnant.
5. On Side, Arms at Sides
When youre sleeping on your side
with both arms down, the spine is best
supported in its natural curve. This can
definitely help reduce back and neck
pain while also reducing sleep apnea.
The downside? Sleeping on the side can
contribute to skin aging due to gravity,
meaning facial wrinkles and sagging
breasts.
6. On Side, Arms Out
This position has many of the same

benefits of sleeping on your side with

your arms straight down. However, any
side sleeping can cause shoulder and
arm pain due to restricted blood flow
and pressure on the nerves, which may
be exacerbated by having your arms out
in front of you.
7. On the Right Side
If youre a side-sleeper, which side
you sleep on also makes a difference.
Sleeping on the right side can worsen
heartburn while sleeping on the left
side can put strain on internal organs
like the liver, lungs, and stomach (while
minimizing acid reflux). For pregnant
sleepers, doctors typically advise
sleeping on the left side, since this can
improve circulation to the fetus.
8. Pillow-Supplemented
Regardless of which sleeping position
you prefer, its highly likely that you can
get a better nights rest with less pain
in the morning by supplementing your
body with a pillow.
Back sleepers can put a small pillow
under the arch of their spine, side sleepers
can place a pillow between their knees,
and stomach sleepers can place a pillow
under their hips to support the joints and
allow for full, pain-free relaxation.

Do you eat, sleep and drink your mobile

phone, literally? Limit your WhatsApp
or Facebook urge as men using cell
phones for over four hours a day are at
a greater risk of impotency than those
who use it for less than two hours, an
alarming research has indicated.
Two new studies in Austria and Egypt
have linked daily cell phone use to
erectile dysfunction (ED).
The researchers believe the damage could
be caused by the electromagnetic radiation
emitted by handsets or the heat they generate.
For the study, the researchers recruited
20 men with erectile dysfunction and

another group of 10 healthy men with no

complaints of ED.
There was no difference between either
group regarding age, weight, height,
smoking, total testosterone or exposure
to other known sources of radiation.
Scientists found that men who had
erectile dysfunction carried switched-on
cell phones for an average of 4.4 hours
daily, whereas the men without erectile
dysfunction averaged 1.8 hours.
"Men who use mobile phones could
be risking their fertility," said the
researchers in a report published in
the latest newsletter of Environmental

Health Trust (EHT).

A non-profit organisation, EHT focuses
on raising awareness on the negative
impacts of unsafe cell phone use and
performing cutting-edge research on cell
phone radiation. However, neither study
found sperm count was affected.
"Our study showed the total time of
exposure to the cell phone is much
more important than the relatively short
duration of intense exposure during
phone calls," the researchers noted.
Since the preliminary study was small-scale,
the researchers concluded that the results
indicated a need for larger-scaled studies.

Loyola University Medical Center has

successfully implanted a newly approved
aortic heart valve device in a patient without
doing an open-heart surgery, which comes
as a major relief to heart patients.
The device called the Medtronic

CoreValve System, which has recently

been approved by the Food and Drug
Administration, is deployed with a
catheter which is inserted in an artery in
the groin and guided up to the heart to
take over the function of a diseased valve.

The procedure is much less invasive than

traditional open-heart surgery.
Loyola physicians also implanted the
device in patients participating in clinical
trials, making the hospital the first Illinois
hospital to implement the procedure.

Why Dark Chocolate Is Good For Your

Heart

Researchers
have
suggests
that
consumption of dark chocolate lowers
the augmentation index, a key vascular
health predictor, and reduces adhesion of
white blood cells to the vessel wall
Dark chocolate helps restore flexibility
to arteries while also preventing white
blood cells from sticking to the walls
of blood vessels. Both arterial stiffness
and white blood cell adhesion are
known factors that play a significant
role in atherosclerosis. The scientists
also found that increasing the flavanol
content of dark chocolate did not
change this effect.
Diederik Esser, Ph.D., a researcher
involved in the work from the Top
Institute Food and Nutrition and

Wageningen University, Division of

Human Nutrition in Wageningen, The
Netherlands, said that they provide a
more complete picture of the impact
of chocolate consumption in vascular
health and show that increasing flavanol
content has no added beneficial effect on
vascular health.
He said that, however, this increased
flavanol content clearly affected taste
and thereby the motivation to eat these
chocolates. So the dark side of chocolate
is a healthy one.
To make this discovery, Esser and
colleagues analyzed 44 middle-aged
overweight men over two periods of
four weeks as they consumed 70 grams
of chocolate per day.

Study participants received either

specially produced dark chocolate with
high flavanol content or chocolate that
was regularly produced. Both chocolates
had a similar cocoa mass content.
Before and after both intervention
periods, researchers performed a variety
of measurements that are important
indicators of vascular health.
During the study, participants were
advised to refrain from certain energy
dense food products to prevent weight
gain. Scientists also evaluated the
sensory properties of the high flavanol
chocolate and the regular chocolate
and collected the motivation scores of
the participants to eat these chocolates
during the intervention.

Researchers have linked moderate to

severe obstructive sleep apnea to an
increased risk of stroke, cancer and death.
Results of the 20-year follow-up study
show that people with moderate to severe
obstructive sleep apnea were four times
more likely to die (hazard ratio = 4.2),
nearly four times more likely to have
a stroke (HR = 3.7), three times more
likely to die from cancer (HR = 3.4), and
2.5 times more likely to develop cancer.

Lead author Nathaniel S. Marshall, PhD,

senior lecturer in clinical trials at the
University of Sydney in Australia, said
sleep apnea is a common disease that has a
powerful impact on public health because
it greatly increases the risk of strokes,
cancers and mortality from any cause.
The study involved 397 adults who are
participating in the ongoing Busselton
Health Study. Objective sleep data were
gathered in 1990 using a portable home

sleep testing device. Participants with a

history of stroke or cancer were excluded
from selected analyses.
Prevalence rates were 4.6 percent for
moderate to severe OSA and 20.6
percent for mild OSA. During the 20year follow-up period there were 77
deaths and 31 strokes, as well as 125
cancer events that included 39 fatalities.
Mild sleep apnea was not associated
with increased health risks.

Eating foods that contain vitamin C may

reduce your risk of the most common
type of hemorrhagic stroke, says a study.
Vitamin C is found in fruits and
vegetables such as oranges, papaya,
peppers, broccoli and strawberries.
Hemorrhagic stroke is less common than
ischemic stroke, but is more often deadly.
The study involved 65 people who
had experienced an intra-cerebral
hemorrhagic stroke, or a blood vessel
rupture inside the brain. They were

compared to 65 healthy people.

Participants were tested for the levels
of vitamin C in their blood. Forty-one
percent of cases had normal levels of
vitamin C, 45 percent showed depleted
levels of vitamin C and 14 percent were
considered deficient of the vitamin.
On average, the people who had a stroke
had depleted levels of vitamin C, while
those who had not had a stroke had
normal levels of the vitamin.
Our results show that vitamin C

deficiency should be considered a risk

factor for this severe type of stroke,
as were high blood pressure, drinking
alcohol and being overweight in our
study,' said study author Stphane
Vannier with Pontchaillou University
Hospital in Rennes, France.
Vannier added that vitamin C appeared to
have other benefits like creating collagen,
a protein found in bones, skin and tissues.
Vitamin C deficiency has also been
linked to heart disease.

A new study has found that sitting with legs

crossed at the knee can bump up blood pressure.
Leg crossing increased systolic blood
pressure nearly 7 percent and diastolic by 2
percent, as reported.
Stephen T. Sinatra, MD, FACC, a

Connecticut-based cardiologist and author

of The Great Cholesterol Myth said that
frequent crossing of the legs also puts stress
on the hip joints and can cause pooling
of blood in the legs when the veins are
compressed.

This could predispose you to inflammation

of the veins of the lower legs and possibly a
blood clot, he said.
Dr. Sinatra advises to avoid crossing your
legs for longer than 10 to 15 minutes, and to
get up and walk around every half hour or so.

How To Get Rid Of Facial Hair

There are many ways of removing facial
hair. The method should be chosen
according to quantity or thickness,
location and rate of growth. Read on
to find out more temporary methods of
facial hair removal.
Plucking
This method involves the use of tweezers
and removes hair from the follicles.
Therefore, re-growth takes time.
Plucking is suitable for stray hairs on the
chin, between and under the brows. It
should not be used for hair on the upper
lip. The area should be first wiped with
cotton wool, soaked in a mild antiseptic
solution. One should also take care not
to pluck out hair from a mole, before
consulting a doctor.
Threading
It's the most common method of
removing facial hair. The disadvantage
is that the effect is temporary and the
procedure has to be repeated periodically.
It is useful for areas like the upper lip
and the eyebrows. In fact, threading is
done to shape the eyebrows. Frequent
threading can cause skin irritations. On
sensitive skins, there can be redness or
a rash. Avoid threading on areas with
eruptions, like pimples or acne. A zinc
ointment or ice can be applied to soothe
the skin.
Waxing
Many beauty salons offer "katori"
waxing for facial hair. Cold wax would
be safer for the face. Waxing strips are
available. However, large areas of the
face should not be waxed. It would be
good for smaller areas like the chin,
area above the lips or sideburns. For
excessive facial hair, many women use a
combination of methods, like threading
chin and area above lips and bleaching
the rest of the face. Or, threading chin
and upper lip and waxing sideburns.

Epilator
An epilator is a small gadget for hair
removal. Epilators for facial hair are
different from the ones for body hair.
The effect lasts for about 4 to 6 weeks.
Epilators pull out the hair by the roots. It is
said that the smallest hair can be removed
with an epilator. There is some initial
pain, which may decrease gradually.
Electrolysis
Although this is said to be a permanent
method of hair removal, re-growth can
occur. In electrolysis, the diathermy
method was common. It involves the
use of fine needles, through which an
electric current is passed. But now a
new procedure is being used, known
as transdermal electrolysis, in which
needles are not used. Also, superfluous
hair can be removed from larger areas.
In the earlier method, needles were
introduced into the hair follicle to
cauterise the hair root. This checked
re-growth. It is extremely important to
make inquiries, as scarring can occur in
the hands of an unskilled operator.
Laser
This is the latest method of permanent
removal of facial hair. Laser produces an
intense beam of light, which is absorbed
by the hair follicles. The laser disables

the hair follicle's ability to produce hair.

Cooling devices are used to prevent
damage to the rest of the skin. The
advantage of laser over electrolysis is
that the laser light can scan broader
areas. Therefore, fewer sessions are
required. However, it is more expensive
than electrolysis. Re-growth occurs in
some cases, but is slower and scantier.
It is very important to find a good
laser clinic. The temporary known side
effects are redness, swelling and itching.
The main risk in laser treatment is the
possibility of skin burns. So, before
choosing the clinic, it is essential to find
out its reputation, by making inquiries
and talking to people who have been
through the treatment.
Home remedies
For very fine hair, scrubs and exfoliation
can help. This would discourage hair
growth over a period of time, if used
regularly. Make a thick paste of sugar,
lemon juice and water and apply it in
the direction of hair growth. Wash off
when it dries. Apply it once or twice a
week. Apply a paste of turmeric powder
and milk and rub this on the skin with a
circular motion. It is said to discourage
facial hair, but it may leave a yellowish
tinge on the skin.

How To Get Model-Perfect Skin At Home

Whether you're walking the catwalk or
down the high street, there is always an
urge to look good but it requires a great
skincare routine, says an expert.
Experts of skin research company have
teamed up with make-up artist, who has
worked with models and celebrities and
shares tips on achieving model perfect
skin at home.
Luminous, clear skin is an essential base
for any make-up look so I always tell

604.510.4088

my clients to invest in an appropriate

skincare routine. You don't need to over
complicate things, just find a couple
of staple products which cleanse and
protect the skin.
Start with deep cleansing
When working with models on shoots or
catwalks, I always start by doing a deep
cleanse. With as many as three shows
per day during fashion week, the makeup gets quickly scrubbed off for the next

show and applied again and again.

I always suggest using a product which
exfoliates, reducing the buildup of dead
skin cells, which can leave the skin
looking dull and prone to outbreaks.
Protect skin from sun
It is important to protect the skin. Sun
damage is the main cause of skin ageing
and it takes time and a lot of layers to
conceal the signs of UV damage, which
is why I always preach prevention.

Surviving (Your Child's) Adolescence

What to do when adolescence increases
willfulness in children.
In general, adolescence is a more
willful age than childhood because
self-determination
begins
driving
growth toward social independence in
predictably powerful ways. Through
words and actions, the young person
says and shows new assertiveness in
statements like the following:
"I will want more freedom to grow."
"I will question rules and authority."
"I will do things my way."
"I will dress as I like."
"I will not like being told what to do."
"I will choose my own friends."
"I will be more private from parents."
"I will want more money."
"I will tell less truth as needed."
"I will try older experiences as desired."
Increased expressions of willfulness like
this creates more disagreements with
parents, so they need to anticipate more
conflict during adolescence. In addition,
if their adolescent was a strong-willed
child, that conflict is likely to be even
more frequent and intense. How to
identify a child who is willful from the
non-willful kind?
Deny a non-willful child what he wants,
and some degree of sadness may follow
before he lets go of the disappointment
and moves on to other things. For a
strong-willed child, however, there is
usually a different emotional response
-- anger, and holding on to what was
wanted. Why?
One characteristic that identifies a
strong-willed child is the tendency to
make a conditional shift' when deciding
on what is wanted, and when having that
want refused. This is the sequence of
thinking that seems to take place.
"If I want something, I want it a lot."
"If I want it a lot, I must have it."
(Now the conditional shift)
"If I must have it then I SHOULD get it."
"If I don't get what I should, that is unfair
so I will be angry."
"Mad at this unfairness, I will keep after
what I feel entitled to."
Anger at the injustice of refusal
energizes stubborn pursuit of what has
been denied.
A strong-willed child is one who has
great strength of want. To the "good"
this can mean she is highly directed, is
motivated to achieve what she wants,
is persistent in pursuit of personal
goals, and does not give up easily when
resisted, rejected, or refused. It's a mixed

604.510.4088

blessing. To the good, she won't take

no' for answer; and to the bad, she won't
take no' for an answer.
To the "bad" this can mean demanding
control, never relenting or backing
down, refusing to compromise, needing
to be right all the time, fighting to win at
all costs, being wed to getting one's way.
Since willfulness is double-edged, the
difficult task of parents is to maximize
the good side and moderate the bad.
If you happen to have a have a strongwilled child (up to age 8 or 9), he or she
is likely to be an even stronger-willed
adolescent. Therefore, while still in
childhood it is worthwhile to help the
boy or girl channel willfulness toward
interests and accomplishment, become
more tolerant of delay and denial
of gratification, reduce conditional
thinking by separating desire from
entitlement, and understand the damage
to relationships that extreme willfulness
can insensitively do.
So the parent continually tries to explain
this difference. "It can be good to know
what you want and to go after what you
want and not give up until you get what
you want; but it may not be good when
you do so at other people's expense or
oppose reasonable limits that others in
responsibility have set. What can be hard
to manage is frustration you feel when
you know what you want and what you
feel is right, and other people disagree."
So what are some possible parental
guidelines for managing a strong-willed
adolescent? Consider these.
Do not ignore conduct you don't
agree with in order to keep the peace.
Parental avoidance of conflict empowers
willfulness.
Do not indulge requests you do not
agree with to please. Giving in for the
sake of approval only encourages more
willfulness.

info@fijitimescanada.com

Do not get into power struggles to prove

who will win or who is in charge. Pitting
parental will against adolescent will
only trains the young person to act more
willfully.
Do give adolescent arguments a full
hearing, but having stated and explained
your final position clearly, do not keep
arguing back. Continuing to argue keeps
open the possibility that you will change
your mind.
Do not engage in any disagreement that
is not conducted safely and respectfully.
By example and interaction, parents
must teach the strong-willed adolescent
tools of constructive conflict for use in
later relationships.
Do be firm and consistent in high
priority parental rules and requests.
Inconsistency sends an irresistible
double message to the strong-willed
adolescent - "sometimes my parents
mean what they say and sometimes they
don't." (The willful teenager will usually
vote for "don't.")
Do be non-evaluative when correcting.
Specifically, take issue with the
teenager's decision: "We disagree with
the choice you have made, this is why,
and this is what we need to have happen
in consequence." Attacking a strongwilled adolescent's character, conduct,
or capacity is usually inflammatory.
Do recognize and appreciate willfulness
when the adolescent carries an
ambition to conclusion or keeps a hard
commitment. Affirming the positives of
willfulness encourages that side to grow.
One single parent I talked with years
ago staked out her position with two
stubborn teenage sons this way. "I will
listen as always, I will be firm when I
have to, I will stick to what I say, I will
be flexible when I can, and I will let you
know when my mind is already made
up." Enough said.

Upset Stomach Home Remedies

Whether you're gassy, constipated,
nauseous, or have indigestion, try
these home remedies to make an upset
stomach feel better naturally.
Carrot and Mint "Juice" Helps an
Upset Stomach
It might sound iffy, but this concoction is
helpful if you're suffering from the winter
flu; the carrot provides nourishment
and peppermint soothes your upset
stomach. Boil four sliced carrots, four
cups of water, and one teaspoon of dried
peppermint or one peppermint teabag.
Turn the heat to medium-low and cook
about 15 minutes or until carrots are
soft. If you're using a teabag, remove
it, then blend the mixture until smooth
and enjoy! You can also add a pinch of
ground ginger to further soothe, or a
squeeze of lemon juice for flavor.
Rice Tea Alleviates an Upset Stomach
To settle an upset stomach or stop
diarrhea, make a rice "tea." Boil 1/2 cup
of rice in six cups of water for about 15
minutes. Strain out the rice, and then
flavor the water with a dash of honey or
sugar and drink warm.

Burnt Toast Settles an Upset Stomach

You know that toast is good for an upset
stomach, but burnt toast is even better
because the char absorbs toxins that are
making you feel ill. Add a smear of jelly
to make it more palatable.
Apple Cider Vinegar Soothes an Upset
Stomach
A mixture of one tablespoon apple cider
vinegar, one cup warm water, and one
tablespoon honey will ease indigestion
and may alleviate cramping and gas in
your upset stomach. It can also lessen
discomfort caused by heartburn.
CRAP Diet Is Good for an Upset
Stomach
If you're feeling constipated, try the
CRAP diet: It stands for "cherries, raisins,
apricots, and prunes," all fiber-friendly
foods that should get your system moving
and ease your upset stomach.
Yogurt Reduces Discomfort from an
Upset Stomach
You probably don't crave anything dairy
when you have a stomachache, but the
probiotic qualities of yogurtaka live
bacteriamake it a good cure as it

eases digestive discomfort and boosts

your immune system. Just make sure
to choose non-fat plain yogurt without
added sugar or flavors when you have an
upset stomach.
Caraway Seeds Ease an Upset
Stomach
Caraway seeds are packed with vitamins
and minerals, which inhibit the growth
of bad bacteria that causes indigestion,
gas, or bloating and contributes to an
upset stomach. Nibble on a handful after
eating your meal, or if you feel gassy.
Fennel Makes an Upset Stomach Feel
Better
Whether it's indigestion or gas and
bloating, fennel can help. Sip a fennel tea,
chew on a few fennel seeds or crunch on
some raw. It supports digestion, reduces
gas, helps with cramping, and reduces
nausea from an upset stomach.
Heat Helps an Upset Stomach
Place a hot water bottle or heating
pad on your upset stomach. The heat
increases blood flow to the skin surface
and transfers the perception of pain from
inside your stomach to the outside.

Eat 10 Grams Of Nuts A Day For Longer Life

You have long complained of your

employer paying you 'peanuts' for salary.
But the peanuts can actually enhance
your lifespan, says a study.
The study confirms a link between peanut
and nut intake and lower mortality rates,
but finds no protective effect for peanut
butter.
Men and women who eat at least 10
grams of nuts or peanuts per day have a
lower risk of dying from several major
causes of death than people who do not
consume nuts or peanuts, the study said.
'It was remarkable that substantially
lower mortality was already observed
at consumption levels of 15 grams of
nuts or peanuts on average per day,' said
project leader professor Piet van den
Brandt from Maastricht University, in
the Netherlands.
The effects are equal in men and
women. Peanuts show at least as strong
reductions in mortality as tree nuts, but
peanut butter is not associated with
mortality, researchers found.
This study was carried out within the
Netherlands Cohort Study, which has been
running since 1986 among over 120,000
Dutch 55-69 year old men and women.

604.510.4088

Nut consumption was assessed by asking

about portion size and frequency of
intake of peanuts, other nuts (tree nuts)
and peanut butter.
The researchers analysed the relationship
with overall and cause-specific mortality
since 1986.
The associations between nuts and
peanut intake and cardiovascular death
confirm earlier results from American
and Asian studies that were often focused
on cardiovascular diseases.
However, in this study, published in the
International Journal of Epidemiology,

info@fijitimescanada.com

it was found that mortality due to

cancer, diabetes, respiratory, and
neurodegenerative diseases was also
lowered among users of peanuts and
nuts.
'A higher intake was not associated with
further reduction in mortality risk,' den
Brandt added.
Peanuts and tree nuts both contain various
compounds such as monounsaturated
and polyunsaturated fatty acids, various
vitamins, fibre, antioxidants, and other
bioactive compounds, that possibly
contribute to the lower death rates.

Akshay Kumar Is A Great Martial Arts

Artist

Akshay and Sidharth will soon be seen

in the upcoming film Brothers.
At a promotional event of their
film, Sidharth said: "It is highly
commendable what Akshay Kumar is
giving back to the society, especially
to women. He is a great martial arts
artist and has taught them that. Girls
will kick the guys who mess with
them. We will go on the graduation
day to give certificates and I am
excited about it."
Akshay said that Sidharth will join him
while handing over the certificates. "In
a few days, I will be giving certificates
to 600 women as I have finished training
them. Altogether we have finished
training 4,000 women. I know it is a
small number, but it is a good initiative
as they have gained confidence apart
from defending themselves," Akshay
said.
The actor said that he has taught them
only basics and not Mixed Martial Arts
(MMA) as it takes time. "It is not about
teaching them MMA but only the basics.
Training them in MMA will take a lot
of time and these are women who are
working and they don't have enough
time," added Akshay.
At the launch event of a game which
is based on the movie, Sidharth said,
"It is very exciting that they have
come up with a game like this. I saw
how the characters look in the game
and they have made a lot of effort to
make it like the film. I have played
some portions of the game and I
enjoyed it."
The Ek Villain actor said that he prefers
playing outdoor games whenever he gets
time. However, he loved seeing himself
in the game. "It is a fun boy kind of a
moment. Playing games on the desktop
and the play station and then having a
game with your name is exciting," he
added.
Directed by Karan Malhotra, Brothers
is an action-drama, based on Mixed
Martial arts (MMA) The film is an
official remake of the 2011 Hollywood
film Warrior, and also features
Jacqueline Fernandez.
Brothers is scheduled to release on
August 14.

Fire On The Sets Of Sumeet Raghavans

Show Badi Dooooor Se Aaye Hain

Sumeet Raghavans show Badi Badi

Dooooor Se Aaye Hain caught fire
recently when a sangeet sequence was
being shot. It so happened that the
curtains caught fire, due to the lights
used on-set. An entertainment portal
suggests that the lights got overheated
and hence resulted to the drapes
getting burnt. A source while talking
to the portal revealed, While we were
shooting for our sangeet sequence all of
a sudden there was a light that sparked
and resulted in burning the drapes of the
mandap. The fire kept spreading, thus we
had to evacuate the entire set. Nobody
was hurt and no harm was caused.
We are glad to learn that the cast and
crew of the show is safe. So did the
shooting of the show get affected? We
have resumed the shoot as we need

to wind up with the track. The set has

been reconstructed and everything has

gone back to normal, further added the

source.

Fiji Defeats Samoa 39-29 In PNC

Final

Three minutes was all Fiji needed to

deliver a knockout blow in the Pacific
Nations Cup final
Kini Murimurivalu and Malakai Ravulo
scored back-to-back tries in the second
half moments after surrendering the lead
Monday as Fiji beat Samoa 39-29 to
capture the six-team rugby tournament.
"It was difficult. We put our hands up
to Samoa," said Fijian captain Akapusi
Qera. "They came out firing. They
wanted to win and we managed to get
some tactics right. In the second half we
pulled it of."
Leone Nakarawa had two tries of his own
for Fiji, ranked 10th in the world, while
Nikola Matawalu added another. Joshua
Matavesi booted a penalty and four
conversions. Substitute Ben Volavola
kicked another penalty for the Fijians,
who finished the tournament undefeated
with a 3-0-1 record.
"We've been working on our secondhalf performance. We tend to lose in the
second half. The boys pulled it off," said
Qera. "We knew Samoa wanted to win
this badly ... we wanted the win more
than them."
Faatoina Autagavaia had two tries for
No. 9 Samoa (2-1-1), while Jack Lam
added another. Michael Stanley booted
four penalties and a conversion.
The countries tied 30-30 earlier in the
tournament that was being used as
preparation for next month's Rugby
World Cup, and there wasn't much to
choose between the South Pacific rivals
for long stretches of this one either.
"It was quite a tight game, but that's just
how rugby goes. A few mistakes here

and there let the Fijians in," said Samoan

scrum half Kahn Fotualii. "We missed a
few tackles and the way the Fijians play,
they can score from anywhere."
Meanwhile, No. 12 Tonga beat No 13.
Japan 31-20 in the third-place game,
while No. 16 United States downed No.
18 Canada 15-13 for fifth.
Down 17-9 at halftime in the final,
Samoa came out with more intensity
after the break, with Lam going over
for a try in the 43rd minute that Stanley
converted to cut Fiji's edge to 17-16.
Samoa then took the lead five minutes
later when Autagavaia scored on an
incredible run to make it 21-17 after the
conversion was missed. But Fiji came
right back with Nakarawa's second try
of the day in the 51st that made it 22-21
after another missed conversion.
The back-and-forth continued in the 55th

minute, with Stanley hitting on a penalty

to make it 24-22 for Samoa.
Fiji finally took over in the 59th when
Murimurivalu went over on another
impressive move to make it 29-22 and
added to the lead when Ravulo went
over after Matawalu's run in the 62nd.
Matavesi's conversion made it 36-24.
Autagavaia then scored his second try of
the match for Samoa in the 69th minute
to cut the deficit to seven after the
conversion was missed. But Fiji put the
game out of the reach in the 77th with a
Volavola penalty that made it 39-29.
"We knew that Samoa would come out
firing after the first game that we drew
and we were ready for it," said Qera.
"We expected that. We knew they would
come back firing for the whole 80
minutes."
Halani Aulika, Fetu'u Vainikolo and
Sonatane Takulua had the tries for the
Tongans (3-1-0) in the third-place game,
while Kurt Morath added two conversions
and four penalties. Hendrik Tui had the
only try for the Japanese (1-3-0), who got
five penalties from Ayumu Goromaru.
AJ MacGinty's scored a late drop goal to
go along with four penalties in the first
half to lead the Americans (2-2-0) to fifth
place. Nick Blevins scored the game's
only try for winless Canada, while Liam
Underwood booted two penalties and a
conversion.
"We weren't urgent enough in the first
half. They turned the ball over on us a
few times," said Canadian head coach
Kieran Crowley. "We just weren't good
enough. They had three yellow cards
and we didn't capitalize on it. Pretty
disappointing."
