nothing is catching internally.

Check all bolted joints and cover plates on the stator frame and heat exchanger
to ensure that:

The gaskets are continuous or if made up of sections are satisfactorily


joined so as to prevent air leakage or water.

b.

All fastenings are fitted and tight.

c.

Gaskets have, so far as can be ascertained, been compressed


satisfactorily and the cover plates/flanges are not distorted.

INSULATION AND WINDING RESISTANCE TESTS

2.1.1

Short circuit all winding temperature detectors and connect them to earth.
Initially test the IR with a 500 V megger to verify that it is safe to apply a test at
higher voltage.
Carry out IR test 2.5 KV d.c. taking readings at one minute and ten minutes
after the initial application of the test voltage and compute the polarization Index
(P.I).

An acceptable value of PI to allow energizing of the winding to take place is


greater then 1.5. However if the winding IR is very high then it may be
impossible to obtain a meaningful value of value of P.I. and this fact should be
recorded. Additionally to an acceptable PI it is also necessary that the winding
IR is above a specified minimum value.

BEARING PEDESTAL INSULATION

2.3.1

Where bearing pedestal insulation in indicated on the manufacturers drawing


check that it has been fitted, is clean and apparently undamaged.

2.3.2

Where fitted, check the shaft earthing brush for freedom of movement and for
good connection to earth.

2.3.3

Where specified by manufacturer check that bearing earth strap is satisfactory


and secure (confirm that the shaft and bearing assembly is not earthed at more
then one point).

2.3.4

Check bearing pedestal insulation resistance using L.V. test set (Megger on
100V mange for example) lifting the earth brush/earth strap as necessary and
replacing after test.
IR should be at least 1.0 M ohms and preferably more for a now machine in
clean condition.

ENERGIZING PROCEDURE

Station a competent person at the motor.

2.6.2

Rack the OCB into service position and check lamp indications at local and
also at remote.

2.6.3

Request control room to close OCB to energize the motor for the first time
(observe indications and starting current).

2.6.4

Check motor no load current is satisfactory and confirm the direction of


rotation. If direction is reverse stop the motor immediately and obtain permit to
work for reversing the direction of rotation.
Repeat items 2.6.2 to 2.6.4.
(Refer manufacturers manual regarding permissible starts per hour.).

2.2

Check the local/remote selector push button at sequence control panel is locked
in local position.

2.3

Check the at the control supply is available at MCC (from sequence Control
Panel).

2.4

Check that at M.C.C. the 415 V associated module dead and isolated (power
circuit fuses are withdrawn).

2.5

Check module switched on.

2.6

Ensure that at location, at MCC and at UCB proper co-ordination is made


between Electrical Test Team and Mechanical Test Team.

2.7

At location maintain the local start push button pressed and check that at MCC
IR picks up (also CF and CRO).

2.8

Release start push button and check IR, CF and CRO dropout.

TEST PROCEDURE

2.9

With local start button maintained pressed, use hand cranking to move blower
just off its outboard limit, and then check that with start push button released
that CRO and CF remain picked up.

2.10

Press local retract button and check that CF drops out and CR picks up.

2.11

Operate outboard limit by hand (LS 2), press local start and then release
outboard limit.

2.12

By hand cranking, move blower to the fully forward position and check that
inboard limit switch (LSI) operates and CF drops out and CR picks up.

2.13

By hand cranking the blower to the fully retracted position, check that CR and
CRO drop out when LS2 operates.

2.14

At MCC, switch off the module and replace power fuses if these were removed
previously. Isolate control supply at UCB unless further testing is to be carried
out immediately.

GENERAL INSPECTION AND CHECKS

1.1

Check that the general area lighting at the Soot Blower location is
adequate for operation and maintenance.

1.2

Check that the access to the Soot Blower and local controls is safe and
satisfactory.

1.3

Check that Soot Blower identification is correct and clearly marked and is
permanent.

1.4

Check that the local junction boxes, conduits, local control station, motor,
and limit switches are undamaged properly painted and securely
mounted.

1.5

Check that all the equipment is reasonably clean.

1.6

Check all cable and conduit entries are terminated using proper size of
cable glands or fittings and are weatherproof.

Check that on the following equipments the terminal boxes are clean and dry,
terminal blocks and connections secure, wiring ferrule numbers are correct,
covers are fitted with gasket in good condition and the covers are secured with
all the fastening in place.
a) Motor Terminal Boxes
b) Junction Boxes
c) Limit Switches
d) Local Control Station

Check manually the mechanical operation of the limit switches (where


practicable).

1.9

Check physical operation of the local control push buttons.

1.10

Check all the wiring with reference to drawings is correctly terminated and
secure, ticking off on the wiring drawings as they are checked.

2.0

TEST PROCEDURE

2.1

With the associated module switched OFF and all supplies isolated, check the
Insulation Resistance (IR) of the local controls, motors (Valve and Blower Motor
from the terminals of the local junction boxes with 500 V Megger and record
results below.
a) A/H Blower Motor (TB# 1,2,3,)
b) A/H Control V/V Motor
c) Control Circuit Wiring

2.2

Check that the local/remote selector switch is looked in Local position is UCB.

2.3

Check the control supply is available at the A/H Blower module and the
associated control V/V module in the MCC and to the Sequence Panel in the
control room.

2.4

Check that at the A/H Blower module and the associated control valve module
the power fuses are pulled out and the module is switched ON.

2.5

At the A/H Control Valve check that the limit switches and Torque Switches are
correctly adjusted, and the valve is in fully closed position.

2.6

Depress the Local start P.B and check that 42 picks up in the blower module.
Also check that CO picks up in the associated steam valve module. Check that
relay RC is picked up and gives an indication.

TEST PROCEDURE

Decouple the S/B after the 1st reduction gear unit and hand crank the blower.
Check LS1 operates and holds relay 42 and relay RC.

2.8

Open the steam valve full manually and check KPO and KMO operate (open).

2.9

As soon as the blower traverses its angle of 37 deg (i.o. reaches its oxtreme
position). Check LS2 operates. Check X picks up at the blower module.

2.10

Check in the valve module that;


Relay CO is dropped off.
Relay CC is picked up.

2.11

Hand crank further to bring the blower to home position. Check that it actuates
LS1 again at home position. Check 42 is dropped off.

2.12

Close the valve to full closed position. Check KMZ operates to drop out CC.

2.13

Restore all disconnections and replace the power fuses if these were removed
previously. Isolate control supply at UCS unless further testing is to be carried
out immediately.
