Planned Parenthood is the nation’s leading sexual and reproductive health care provider and
advocate. It operates over 840 local facilities, and is frequently the only family planning
resource its patients can access.
Who are its clients?
• Planned Parenthood and its affiliates provide sexual and reproductive health care,
education and information to 5 million women, men and adolescents worldwide every year
• 77% of Planned Parenthood health care clients in the U.S. are age 20 or older
• 1 in 4 women in the U.S. has visited a Planned Parenthood health center at least once in
her life
What does it do?
• Planned Parenthood health centers focus on the prevention of unplanned pregnancies –
82% of clients receive services to prevent unplanned pregnancies, helping to prevent over
621,000 pregnancies each year
• Each year, Planned Parenthood provides (often at reduced cost to low-income patients):
1 million Pap tests
850,000 breast exams
3.5 million tests and treatments for STIs, including HIV
Educational programs to more than 1.2 million adolescents and adults
• 3% of all of Planned Parenthood’s services are abortion services
The truth about Margaret Sanger
Margaret Sanger paved the way for access to contraceptives in the United States. Among her many
accomplishments:
• Established the principle that a woman’s right to her body is the foundation of her human rights
• Brought about the reversal of the federal and state Comstock laws, which prohibited the
dissemination of information about sex, sexuality, contraception and human reproduction
• Created access to birth control for low-income, minority and immigrant women
• Expanded the American concept of volunteerism and grassroots activism by setting up a network of
volunteer-driven family planning centers across the U.S.
While Sanger did entertain some ideas that are now extremely objectionable, modern-day reproductive
justice activists understand the concept of multiple oppressions for women – struggles of race and class
along with gender. We should not associate contemporary reproductive health care providers or the
reproductive justice movement with eugenics because of some views expressed be Margaret Sanger.
