    grantedonJune30inaCBIcaserelatingtochargesthathehadanillegaltelephoneexchangefunctioninginhishousewhilehewasTelecom
    Ministerin200407.
    Mr.Maranwas,however,grantedthreedaystimetosurrenderbeforetheCentralinvestigationagency.
    Afterhearingargumentsfromboththesides,JusticeS.Vaidyanathansaid,Ifindthatthepetitioner[DayanidhiMaran]hasbeeninvolvedin
    seriousoffences,whereinallegationsofcorruption,cheatingandcausingwrongfullosstotheexchequerofthegovernmenttothetuneof
    croresofrupees,havebeenattributed.
    Thejudgesaid:IfindprimafacietheexactroleofthepetitionerbeingtheUnionMinisterforCommunicationsandInformationTechnology,
    inmisusinghisofficeforhiswrongfulgainbyobtainingtelephoneconnectionsillegallyinthenameofBSNLofficials

    SoonaftertheMadrasHighCourtjudgepronouncedtheordersonMonday,cancellingthesixweekadvancebailgrantedtoformerUnion
    MinisterDayanidhiMaranonJune30,hiscounselprayedforthreedaystimetosurrender.
    JusticeS.Vaidyanathangrantedtimetill4.30p.m.onAugust13tosurrenderbeforetheinvestigationagencyintheCBIcaserelatingto
    chargesthatMr.MaranhadanillegaltelephoneexchangefunctioninginhishousewhilehewasTelecomMinisterin200407.
    EarlierthejudgefoundconsiderableforceintheAdditionalSolicitorGeneralscontentionthatwhenanumberofundertrialswere
    languishinginjailsevenforpettyoffences,Mr.Maranshouldnotbeextendedanyspecialconcessionbyenlarginghimonbail,asserious
    allegationsofcorruption,cheatingandcausingwrongfullosstotheexchequerhavebeenmadeagainsthim.
    Hesaid:Myjudicialconsciencepreventedmefromenlargingthepetitioneronbail.
    ThoughMr.MaranappearedbeforetheCBIinDelhionJuly1,2and3,theagencymovedthecourtseekingcancellationofhisbail,
    contendingthathewasnotcooperatingwiththeprobe.
    Accordingtotheprosecution,astheUnionMinisterofCommunicationsandInformationTechnologybetweenJune2004andJune2007,
    Mr.MaranenteredintoacriminalconspiracywithofficialsoftheBSNLandbyabusingtheirofficialpositions,causedahugefinancialloss
    andwrongfullosstotheexchequertothetuneofRs.1.78crore.
    TheprosecutionallegedthattheformerMinisterinstalledover300telephoneconnectionsinhisresidenceinthenameoftheaccused
    governmentservantstoshowtheseconnectionsillegallyunderservicecategory,therebymakingnopaymentsfortheinstallationand
    rentals.
    TheCBIhadchargedthatthoughtheanticipatorybailwasgrantedtohimontheconditionthatheshouldcooperatewiththeinvestigation,
    nothingcouldbeelicitedfromhimsincehegaveevasiveanswers.Ithencesoughthiscustodyforinterrogation.
