The first Multifunctional module

Air insulated compact switchgear COMPASS
There are tenths of thousands of old
substations based on AIS; a significant
portion of that installed base is ageing.
COMPASS fits extremely well in any
substation built with AIS in mind; it is a good
compromise of:
-

Compactness.

Functions integration (CB, DS, ES, CT,

VT, SA).

Reliability.

Cost.

The module can be delivered fully assembled

or, for those countries where delivery costs
are at a premium, as subassemblies ready to
be completed on site, thus:

The mechanism has a minimal
number of mechanical
components, it is reliable and
maintenance-free.
The position of the combined
disconnector/earthing switch is
clearly shown by an indicator
mechanically coupled to the
shaft. Moreover, visual
confirmation can be obtained by
means of an inspection window
in the enclosure. The
disconnector/earthing switch can
also be operated manually by
means of a crank.

TIP (SF6 Station Service Voltage Transformer)

Introduction
Direct high to low (or medium)
voltage conversion
Up to 0.5 MVA available power
SF6 isolation is non
degradable, non flammable and
prevents explosions; yearly
leakages are less than 0.1%
Compact design; installation is
limited to connection and gas
filling
System voltages from 72.5kV
to 550 kV
Maintenance free design

TIP (SF6 Station Service Voltage Transformer)

Example Terna in Italy
Substation
1 MV connection
2 MV
connections

Substation
1 internal source

Control power supply from

two external MV sources;

Difficulties in getting two

external sources with high
levels of availability and
reliability.

Control power supply from

one external MV source and
one internal;

ABB Group
May 4, 2015 | Slide 42

In special cases two internal

sources are possible when no
MV network is available, time
schedule for external
connections is not in line with
SS energization etc

TIP (SF6 Station Service Voltage Transformer)

Applications
How to provide auxiliary power
supply in a remote substation
w/o a power transformer?
Ex: switching substation, series
compensation, wind farms, cell
tower

How to provide electricity to an

isolated low power user such
as a village?

SF6 Insulation Advantages

ABB Group
May 4, 2015 | Slide 45

Internal overpressure caused by

an internal arc gets released
through breaking of the rupture
membrane no explosion follows

SF6 is non flammable, providing

safety to people and avoiding
damages to surrounding
equipment

SF6 is non degradable: there is no

formation of conducting gases and
no consequential partial
discharges; sampling is not
required

Included density meter provides

two threshold pressure levels:
warning and alarm

Yearly gas leakages are less than

0.1%
