1. (a) What are the forces that act on a particle as it moves through fluids?
(b) Develop a force balance equation for one dimensional motion of particles
through fluids. [16]

2. (a) With the help of a neat diagram, explain the construction and working of a
gate valve.
(b) What you understand about steam trap. [12+4]

3. Write on:

(a) Slugging and


(b) Circulating fluid beds. [16]

4. A manometer is used to measure the pressure drop across an orifice. The manometer
filled with mercury ( sp.gr= 13.6), and the liquid above the mercury is brine (sp.gr
= 1.26). When pressure across the taps are equal, the level of the mercury in the
manometer is 0.9m below the orifice taps. Under operating conditions, the gauge
pressure at the up-stream tap is 14 KPa; the pressure at the down stream tap is
250 mm below atmospheric. What is the reading of the manometer? [16]

5. (a) Explain the boundary layer formation for the flow of fluid parallel with a thin
plate,giving a neat sketch
(b) Estimate the transition length at the entrance to a 15mm tube through glycerol
at 60o C flowing at a velocity of 0.3 m/sec.The density of glecerol is 1240 kg/m3
and the viscosity is 95cp. [8+8]

6. Methane gas is being pumped through a 305m length of 52.5mm diameter steel
pipe at a rate of 41.0kg/m2 -s.The inlet pressure is 345kPa abs. Assume isothermal
flow at 288.8K. (µmethane = 1.045 × 10−5 pa − sec, f = 0.0014).

(a) Calculate the pressure at the end of the pipe.


(b) Calculate the maximum velocity that can be obtained at these conditions. [16]

7. Derive an expression for the thickness of the layer in a flow of liquids in thin layers.
[16]

8. Air at 93.30 C forced through a long, circular pipe 914 mm in diameter. A pitot tube
reading is taken at the centre of the pipe at a sufficient distance to ensure normal
velocity distribution. The pitot reading in 13.7 mm H2 O and the static pressure at

the point of measurement is 387 mm H2 O. The coefficient of the pitot tube in 0.98.
Calculate the flow of air measured at 1560 C and a barometric pressure of 760 mm
Hg. [16]

1. Derive an expression for pressure ratio of an isentropic flow in terms of Mach


number.

2. (a) What is the importance of dimensional analysis?


(b) Outline the procedure for Rayleigh’s method and Buckingham method used
in dimensional analysis. [6+10]

3. (a) What do you understand by terminal velocity?


(b) Estimate the terminal velocity for limestone particles of 0.16 mm average size,
falling in water at 300 C. Density of the particles is 2800 kg/m3 . [16]

4. Water is pumped at the rate of 200 lit/s through a 30 cm pipe upto a hill top. If
the pump maintains a pressure of 150 kN/m2 at the hill top at an elevation of 45
m, What is the pressure at the foot hills at zero elevation. Neglecting losses, What
is the power required to pump the water? [16]

5. (a) Obtain an expression to estimate venturi coefficient.


(b) A horizontal venturi meter having a throat diameter of 20 mm is placed in
a 75-mm ID pipeline, through which water is flowing at 15 0 C. A mercury
manometer gives a reading of 500 mm. Determine the water flow rate. [16]

6. (a) How can it be said that a suspension, when fluidized, behaves like a dense
fluid?
(b) Write on entrainment. [16]

7. Give a diagrammatic representation of a typical pump application. Applying


Bernoulli’s equation find the pump work. Also write the expressions for power
supplied to the pump and power delivered to the third. [16]

5. (a) Derive an expression for the estimation of pressure drop in a centrifuge.
(b) A centrifuge bowl 250-mm ID (internal diameter) is turning at 4000 r/min. It
contains a layer of chlorobenzene 50 mm thick. If the density of the chloroben-
zene is 1109 kg/m3 and the pressure at the liquid surface is atmospheric, what
gauge pressure is exerted on the wall of the centrifuge bowl? [8+8]
6. (a) How is bed expansion characterized in particulate fluidization?
(b) A bed of beads, 8 ft deep is to be backwashed with water to remove dirt. The
particles have a density of 1.24 g/cm3 and an average size of 1.1 mm. Estimate
the minimum fluidization velocity using at 200 C and also the velocity required
to expand the bed by 25 percent. Water viscosity is 1 cP, density 1 g/cm3 and
the sphericity of beads may be taken as 1.0, voidage at incipient fluidization
is 0.40. [16]
7. (a) The rate of flow of water in a 150 mm diameter pipe was measured with
venturi meter with a 50 mm diameter throat. When the pressure drop over
the converging section is 121 mm of water, the flow rate in 2.91 Kg/sec. What
is the coefficients for the converging cone of thte meter at this flow rate.
(b) Explain the working of fan. [12+4]
8. 2.16 m3 /h water at 320o K is pumped through a 40 mm I.D. pipe through a length
of 150 m in a horizontal direction and up through a vertical height of 12 m. In
the pipe there are fittings equivalent to 260 pipe diameters. What power must be
supplied to the pump if it is60% efficient? Take the value of fanning friction factor
as 0.008. Water viscosity is 0.65 CP, and density = 1 gm/cc. [16]

1. Prove that the velocity profile of a Newtonian fluid flowing in laminar flow through
a pipe of circular cross section is parabolic. [16]

2. Write short notes on:

(a) Viscosity and Momentum flux


(b) Time dependent flow of fluids
(c) A pipe of 20 cm and length 10m is used to transport oil of Sp.gr is 0.9 and
viscosity 1.5 poise. The oil is pumped at a rate of 20 lit/s. Find the average
velocity and Reynolds Number. [4+4+8]

3. Discuss the effect of fluid superficial velocity on pressure drop and bed expansion
in a bed of solids. [16]

4. (a) With the help of a neat sketch, explain the principle and applications of an
inclined manometer.
(b) An inclined manometer is installed across a pipeline carrying water to measure
the pressure drop due to friction. The manometer is filled with organic liquid
of specific gravity 1.6 and its reading is 5 cm. The angle between the vertical
and inclined limbs is 60o . Calculate the pressure drop?

6. (a) Give the expression and applicability of Blake-Plummer equation.


(b) What do you understand by equivalent channel diameter? [16]

7. (a) Air flows through a convergent -divergent nozzle from a large tank in which
the properties are held constant at 50 C and 304 kPa abs. The required flow
rate is 1kg/s.Determine the exit area of the nozzles at Mach number 1.36.

(b) Describe in detail about stagnation temperature and stagnation pressure.

8. (a) A rotameter has a 30 cm long tube with ID of 2.5 cm at the top and 1.8 cm
at the bottom. The float has 1.8 cm diameter with specific gravity of 5.8 and
a volume of 60 cm3 . If the coefficient of the motor is 0.72, at what height will
the float be when metering 0.1 liter/sec.
(b) Write short notes on pressure recovery in venturi meter. [12+4]
