- Gini Simpson

Please read all instructions before beginning. RSO = Right Sides Out; RST = Right Sides Together.
Please Note When the pattern states to trace, I always transfer my patterns to card stock (you can also use any
light cardboard such as cereal boxes or manilla folders). It makes it so much easier to trace the pattern onto the
fabric. Your traced lines will normally be your sewing lines unless stated otherwise and then once sewn, you will cut 1/4
outside of the traced lines. When the pattern states to cut, you will then cut out directly on the pattern lines.
For the hair, I used the Kinky Doll Hair from www.clothdollsupply.com only because I had been sent a free sample to
try. After I had made the dolls and when I was preparing the instructions for this pattern, I looked up this hair on the
web site and found that the hair isn't very cheap. If I would have checked before I made up the dolls, I would have
used Lion Brand's Thick & Quick Yarn for the hair. If you use the Thick & Quick yarn, just use 2-3 strands in each
bundle and pull apart the strands after securing to the head. Of course, as with all of my patterns, please feel free to
use any of the many, many beautiful yarns out there.
If you'd rather not bother with the tea dyeing but like the tea dyed look, check out the tea dyed muslin at Joann's.

MOMMY
BODY & HEAD - Trace the body and the head of the doll on a double layer of muslin with the water soluble pen.
Sew RST on traced lines, leaving open where indicated on patterns, and cut out leaving a 1/4 seam allowance
outside of traced lines. On the body, clip the curves and square off the bottom by matching the bottom seam with
the side seams and sew across the seams 1/2 from the tip (see fig. 1). Trim seams to 1/4. Turn RSO. Fill bottom
of body with approx. 1/2 - 3/4 cup of kitty litter. Insert the craft stick through the opening up into the neck and
firmly stuff with fiberfill. Be sure to put the fiberfill on both sides of the stick. By using the stick, your dolls
neck will remain rigid and the head wont wobble. Continue firmly stuffing the rest of the body. Hand stitch
opening closed using beige carpet thread.
Clip the curves on the head piece and cut a 5/8 slit in the back of the head where indicated on the pattern piece
and turn RSO. Stuff the head firmly. Dont close opening - this is where the neck of the body will go. Using the
water soluble pen trace on the facial features. Paint the whites of the eyes with White, Terra Cotta for the Iris
and the pupils with Black. Paint a small White highlight in the upper right and lower left of each pupil. Using
thinned Black (mix a little water with the Black paint) paint the lines in the iris parts of the eyes, the eyelashes,
the eyebrows, the mouth and outline the whites of the eyes, the Iris and around the eyes and eyelids. Using an old
small scruffy paint brush and the Burnt Umber paint, dry brush (load your brush with a small amount of paint and
then wipe almost all of the paint off on a paper towel) the sides of the eyelids and also underneath the eyelids (see
the pattern for placement). Also shade around the outside edges of the Iris with the dry brush. Using an old
scruffy brush, blush the cheeks with the dark rose stencil cream.
NOSE - Cut the nose out of the muslin and using the Fray Check run a small line around the outside edge of the
circle let dry. Using a single strand of the beige carpet thread, hand sew a gathering stitch around the outside
edge. Place a small amount of Fiberfill in the center of the circle and pull the ends of the thread to gather the
nose around the fiberfill and tie off the ends of the thread leaving a small opening. Using a small dowel or the end
of a small paint brush, continue stuffing the nose until it becomes very firm with little or no gathers to be seen
from the top. Thread a long doll needle with a double strand of the beige carpet thread, enter through the
opening in the back of the head and exit out the front of the head where the nose goes, go through the bottom of
the nose from one side to the other and then enter back into the head and back out the opening in the back of the
head. Before pulling the thread tight, place a small amount of tacky glue on the bottom of the nose and then pull
the thread tight indenting a little secure thread to the bottom side of the slit (be sure to secure it to the
bottom of the slit since if you use the top of the slit, you won't be able to put the head on the neck).

LEGS Trace two of Mommy's legs onto a double layer of muslin. Sew RST on the traced lines leaving open where
indicated and cut out 1/4 beyond the sewn lines, clipping the curves. Turn RSO and stuff firmly to line indicated
on pattern and stitch across lines on both legs. Zigzag the open ends closed. Paint the shoes with Black and the
socks with White and let dry. Using the Burnt Umber and an old scruffy brush, dry brush around the edges of the
shoes and the straps (see pattern for shading). Hot glue the 3/8 flat lace around the top edge of the socks and
hot glue the 1/2 metal buttons on the shoe straps.
ARMS - Trace two of the arms onto a double layer of muslin. Clip the curves and turn RSO. Stuff just the hands
lightly with Fiberfill. Using the pattern as a guide and the water soluble pen, draw the finger lines on the hands
and either machine stitch on these lines or hand stitch on the finger lines using a single strand of the beige carpet
thread. I always like to do the fingers and toes with hand stitching as I have better control over the amount of
the indentations that I make but then I'm only making one of these dolls. If I was still doing the craft shows, I
would be machine stitching the fingers and toes to save time. Continue stuffing the arms medium firm to the lines
indicated on the pattern and stitch across the stuffing/stitch line and zigzag the open ends of the arms shut.
DRESS - Using your choice of print fabric, cut the bodice out on a double fold using the pattern piece and clip
1/4 at the neck marks, slitting in between the clips. Using your choice of fabric rip two skirt pieces 7(L)x14(W).
Gather the two skirt pieces along the top of the 14 widths. Adjust the gathers to fit the bottom of the bodice
piece and sew RST the skirts to the bodice where indicated on the bodice pattern. Fold dress in half along the
shoulders with RST and sew up each side seam and down each sleeve seam using 1/4 seam allowance. Clip
underarm seams and turn RSO. Using a double strand of ecru crochet thread, turn the ends of each sleeve under
to the inside approx. 3/4 and run a gathering stitch around each sleeve approx. 1/2 from the edge leaving 3 tails
to tie into bows. Turn the neck edge under and run a gathering stitch around the edge leaving 3 tails to tie into a
bow.
PANTS - Using muslin, rip or cut 2 pieces 7-3/4(W) x 8(L). With RST sew the two 7-1/2 side seams together.
Cut up the center 3 and stitch from the bottom up and around and down the other side of the cut using a 1/4
seam (see Fig. 2). Clip curves and turn RSO. Fold the waist edge of the pants 1/2 to the inside and with a double
strand of crochet thread, hand gather around the waist 1/4 from the edge leaving 3 tails to tie into a bow when
placed on your doll. Turn the edges of the legs to the inside 1/2 and using the black floss, hand stitch a running
stitch around each leg approximately 1/4 from the edge.
BABIES
BODY & HEAD For each baby, trace the body and the head of the doll on a double layer of muslin with the water
soluble pen. Sew RST on traced lines, leaving open where indicated on patterns, and cut out leaving a 1/4 seam
allowance outside of traced lines. On the body, clip the curves and square off the bottom by matching the bottom
seam with the side seams and sew across the seams 1/2 from the tip (see fig. 1). Trim seams to 1/4. Turn RSO.
Fill bottom of body with approx. 1/8 cup of kitty litter. Cut the craft sticks 3 long and insert the craft stick
through the opening up into the neck and firmly stuff with fiberfill. Be sure to put the fiberfill on both sides of
the stick. By using the stick, your dolls neck will remain rigid and the head wont wobble. Continue firmly stuffing
the rest of the body. Hand stitch opening closed using beige carpet thread.
Clip the curves on the head piece and cut a 5/8 slit in the back of the head where indicated on the pattern piece
and turn RSO. Stuff the head firmly. Dont close opening - this is where the neck of the body will go. Using the
water soluble pen trace on the facial features. Paint the whites of the eyes with White and the pupils with Black.
Paint a small White highlight in the upper right of each pupil. Using thinned Black (mix a little water with the Black
paint) paint the eyelashes, the eyebrows, the mouth line and outline the whites of the eyes. Using an old scruffy
brush, blush the cheeks with the dark rose stencil cream.

NOSE - For each baby, cut the nose out of the muslin and using the Fray Check run a small line around the outside
edge of the circles let dry. Using a single strand of the beige carpet thread, hand sew a gathering stitch around
the outside edge. Place a small amount of Fiberfill in the center of the circle and pull the ends of the thread to
gather the nose around the fiberfill and tie off the ends of the thread leaving a small opening. Using a small dowel
or the end of a small paint brush, continue stuffing the nose until it becomes very firm with little or no gathers to
be seen from the top. Thread a long doll needle with a double strand of the beige carpet thread, enter through
the opening in the back of the head and exit out the front of the head where the nose goes, go through the
bottom of the nose from one side to the other and then enter back into the head and back out the opening in the
back of the head. Before pulling the thread tight, place a small amount of tacky glue on the bottom of the nose
and then pull the thread tight indenting a little secure thread to the bottom side of the slit (be sure to secure it
to the bottom of the slit since if you use the top of the slit, you won't be able to put the head on the neck).
LEGS For each doll trace two legs onto a double layer of muslin. Sew RST on the traced lines leaving open where
indicated and cut out 1/4 beyond the sewn lines, clipping the curves. Match the top leg seam with the bottom leg
seam and using the toe template, trace onto the end of the feet approx. 1/4 from the end. (see Fig. 3) Be sure
that after you trace the first one that you flip the template over and trace the second one so youll have a right
foot and a left foot. Stitch on the traced line and trim seam to 1/4. Clip curves and turn RSO and stuff medium
firm to stuff line indicated on pattern. Zigzag the open ends closed. Draw the toes on with the water soluble pen
and using a single strand of beige carpet thread and the pattern as a guide, form the toes by going in the bottom
of the foot with the needle and out the top, wrap the thread around the end of the foot, pulling the thread snugly
to form the toes and repeat one more time - go in the bottom of the foot but instead of exiting through the first
toe, move the needle over and exit out the top at the second toe. Repeat this until you make the five toes. Tie off
on the bottom of the foot. Repeat for the other foot.
ARMS - Trace two of the arms onto a double layer of muslin. Clip the curves and turn RSO. Stuff just the hands
lightly with Fiberfill. Using the pattern as a guide and the water soluble pen, draw the finger lines on the hands
and either machine stitch on these lines or hand stitch on the finger lines using a single strand of the beige carpet
thread. Continue stuffing the arms medium firm to the lines indicated on the pattern and stitch across the
stuffing/stitch line and zigzag the open ends of the arms shut.
DRESS - Using your choice of print fabric, cut the bodice out on a double fold using the pattern piece and clip
1/4 at the neck marks, slitting in between the clips. Using your choice of fabric rip two skirt pieces 13/4(L)x8(W). Gather the two skirt pieces along the top of the 8 widths. Adjust the gathers to fit the bottom
of the bodice piece and sew RST the skirts to the bodice where indicated on the bodice pattern. Fold dress in
half along the shoulders with RST and sew up each side seam and down each sleeve seam using 1/4 seam allowance.
Clip underarm seams and turn RSO. Using a double strand of ecru crochet thread, turn the ends of each sleeve
under to the inside approx. 3/4 and run a gathering stitch around each sleeve approx. 1/2 from the edge leaving
3 tails to tie into bows. Turn the neck edge under and run a gathering stitch around the edge leaving 3 tails to
tie into a bow.
SHIRT - Cut the shirt out of your choice of fabric on a double fold and clip at the neck 1/4 and slit in between
the clips to make the opening for the neck. With RST fold the shirt in half along the fold at the top of the shirt
and sew the front of the shirt to the back of the shirt starting at the bottom side of the shirt and sewing up and
then down the sleeve clip the underarm where marked on the pattern and turn the shirt RSO. Fold the neck edge
under to the inside and using a double strand of the ecru crochet thread, hand sew a gathering line around the
entire neck 1/8 from the edge, leaving tails on the ends of the thread. Fold the ends of the sleeves underneath
approximately 1/2 and using the ecru crochet thread, hand sew a running stitch around the sleeves approximately
1/4 from the edge and secure with a knot.
DIAPERS Cut 2 of the diapers out of the cotton batting.

ALL THREE DOLLS

TEA DYEING - Mix 1 cup instant tea with 1 qt. warm water in a spray bottle. Spray the entire dolls' body parts
and the clothes. When dry, if you want a deeper color, spray again.
HAIR For Mommy, cut 7 bundles of 6 lengths of the Kinky Hair (my bundles were approximately 1/2 thick).
Using a single strand of the black floss, sew the centers of each of these 7 bundles to each X marked on the top
of the head. Trim the ends as needed.
For the Girl, cut 3 bundles of 3-1/2 lengths of the Kinky Hair, approximately 1/4 thick. Using a single strand of
the black floss, sew the centers of each of these bundles to the X marked on the head pattern. Rip two strips of
fabric 5/8 wide by 4 and tie each strip around each of the pigtails. Trim the hair and the hair ties as needed.
For the Boy, cut 1 bundle of a 3-1/2 length of the Kinky Hair, approximately 1/4 thick and using a single strand of
the black floss, sew the center of the bundle to the X at the top center of the head. Trim the hair as needed.
FINISHING - For all dolls, with a double strand of crochet thread, stitch the arms to the shoulders and the legs
to the bottom with the toes facing in for Mommy and facing forward for the babies. Place the pantaloons on
Mommy adjusting the gathers around the waist and tie ends into a bow. Place Mommy's dress on adjusting the
gathers around the neck and arms and tie the ends into bows. Place the shirt on the Boy, adjusting the gathers
around the neck and tie the ends into a knot. Place the dress on the Girl, adjusting the gathers around the neck
and arms and tie the ends into bows. Place the diapers on each of the babies and use the small safety pins to
secure each side.
For all dolls, insert your finger up into the slit in the back of the dolls head going up between the muslin and the
fiberfill making a place for the neck to go. Place some Tacky Glue up into the slit and force the neck up into it. I
like to tilt my head a little to one side. If you have cut the opening in the back of the head too large, just take a
couple of stitches with the carpet thread on each side of the neck to close the opening.
Rip a piece of fabric 1-3/4(W)x18(L) and beginning in the back of the doll's head at the neck, hot glue the center
of the fabric to the head and bring both ends of the fabric around the head to the front and up the sides of the
head to the top of the head making it a little off center and tie into a bow. Use small dabs of hot glue to tack the
fabric strip in place around the head. Trim the ends.
Place the babies in Mommy's arms and if desired, you can tack Mommy's arms around each baby using a double
strand of the crochet thread, and . . . . . .
