Purpose
Grout is used for filling and grouting spaces under machine components, e.g. bearing pe
destals, filters, oil coolers, etc. with a minimum of shrinkage and voids, for embedment of
mounting plates (packaged turbines and gearboxes) and for filling of pipes or empty spa
ces within the areas of anchor bolt.
All of the forces generated by the turbine, the gearbox and the driven machine are transfer
red to the foundation. Good bonding between the foundation and the machine or the foun
dation, mounting plate and the machine is therefore a prerequisite for good running beha
vior of machines.
This bond is implemented for turbine and gearbox arranged on concrete foundation with
the aid of soleplates, support plates and grout on the one hand and by anchor bolts on the
other hand.
For turbines, or turbines and gearboxes mounted on baseplates, the bond to the founda
tion is implemented by the baseplate embedded in grout and the anchor bolts.
Trouble-free, quiet and low-vibration operation of the turbine and the gearbox essentially
depends on good-quality grout and careful preparation and working of the grout.

Grout

2.1 Types
There are two types of grout:
D Cement-based grout, e.g. Pagel V1/50, Betec 140
D Epoxy-based grout, e.g. Ceilcote.
Cement-based grout is mixed with water according to manufacturer specifications.
Epoxy-based grout comprises two-component epoxy resin systems which must be pro
portioned according to a precisely specified mixing ratio.
Depending on ambient temperatures and grout thicknesses, either filler authorized by the
manufacturer especially for such situations, or a different type of grout shall be used.
2.2 Points to be noted:
D Follow the processing instructions specified by the grout manufacturer.
D Epoxy grout is highly toxic. When using this type of grout the special safety procedure of
the grout manufacturer must be followed.
D When using epoxy grout, the underside of the steel frame must be specially treated in part
according to manufacturer's instructions (sandblasting of surfaces and/or application of a
primer as specified by manufacturer).
D When using cement-based grout, follow the instructions for wetting the foundation given
by the manufacturer.
D Temperature requirements:
Cement-based grout:
Ambient temperature to be above + 5 C
with cold-weather measures implemented also for temperature below 5 C
Epoxy-based grout:
Ambient temperature above + 5 C

Requirements on grout

3.1 Storage
Grout must be protected against environmental influences by special packaging and shall
have a shelf life of at least on year.
3.2 Processing
D The consistency of the grout shall be such as to allow its working by pouring or pumping.
D Volume change: Guaranteed not to shrink.
Gauged expansion within the stabilization period of 24 hours to ensure adhesion between
the foundation and the machine component. No further expansion should accur after this
24 hour period.
3.3 Technical requirements
D Compressive strength
after 24 hours - min. 40 N/mm2
after 72 hours - min. 60 N/mm2
final strength - min. 70 N/mm2 (Attention: see para. 4!)
The grout of base frame mounted turbines must have a final strength of 60 N/mm2 .
D Coefficient of expansion
The coefficient of expansion of the grout must equal that of the foundation.
D Impact and vibration
Resistance to impact and vibration, without shattering.
D Other properties
free from chlorides
non-metallic
corrosion-inhibiting
resistant to oil and water
resistant to moisture and temperature fluctuations
high bonding strength

Recommended grout
Selection of the grout is independent of the type, model or size of the machine. The same
grout can, for example, also be used for grouting of the driven machine.
The following grouts are recommended by Siemens Turbine Manufacturing Plants due to
their own experience:
D for thickness greater 15 up to 70 mm
Pagel
V1/50
- cement-based
Betec
140
- cement-based
Ceilcote CP 648
- two component epoxy-based
D for thickness greater 60 up to 100 mm
Pagel
V1/50
Betec
180
D for thickness greater 100 mm
Pagel
V1/160
D for setting of support plates
Pagel
V14/10
D Grouting of support plates
Pagel
V1/50
Betec
140
Before using other products the material data must be closely checked to ensure com
pliance with requirements cited above. The use of other products must also be coordina
ted with Siemens 1) by sending the material specifications and data parameters to Sie
mens1) for evaluation. It must be noted that the evaluation can only be based on
manufacturers data and that Siemens Turbine Manufacturing Plants have no practical ex
perience with other products than those mentioned above.

Processing of and load application to grout

The processing instructions to be supplied by the grout manufacturer shall be closely fol
lowed.
Load may not be applied to the grouted machine components until the grout has hardened
for at least 24 hours.
Loads may be applied to epoxy grouts after the following time periods, which depend on
the ambient temperatures:
