Dear Members here is a problem of abnormal tan delta value: Details of

Transformer: Star star, 5 MVA, 33/11 kV, OCTC type

Problem: Initially the tan delta value found was 35.3 in GSTg
Activity 1: Earthing was made proper from the active part value gone down to 1.28
Activity 2: Hot oil circulation at 55 degree C for more than 36 hours, no improvement
Activity 3: Off circuit switch removed and tan delta checked. no change
Insulation quality is good because this is one transformer from the lot of 25 and other transformers are
showing tan delta below 1

Dear Mr. Sarang Joshi, thanks for your inputs. Please note that, condenser type
bushings are not used for this transformer.
Still we would take your point and act....

This bad value is from HV winding?
if this tx still in factory, u can consider to perform the following steps
:* check moisture content in oil and related oil quality
* direct test through leads without any bushings
* perform dielectric response analysis or FDS

* remove the oil and clean the tank, and test tan delta and IR without the oil
* send to vapor phase for dry out and record the water content
* retest tan delta and IR
* put back the oil and perform FDS or dielectric response
actually, if high CH, tx grounding can b the main concern...you might focus it...

Abhijeet,
If you could provide a little more information I might be able to suggest some things. Why
was the unit being tested?
Do you have a current oil analysis?
Do you have seperate test results of the high windings, low windings & both together?
Wye-wye connections sometimes have a common connection inside the transformer?
Was this isolated before the test?

Please check on other parameter too, i.e. watts loss and capacitance. Do compare
capacitance value with other 25 unit transformers. You might be able to find some
information from this type of data.
i believe your test procedure is correct and test equipment is calibrated and work well
since other 25 transformers are in good reading...

Porcelain bushings may cause Tan delta problem, due to ingress of moisture. I have
faces this problem in some of the transformers but after heating values were OK

Please do one thing, take hot air blower, apply hot air on porcelin of boshing atleast 1/2
hr,sorrounding bushing & check the tan delta, if u found improovement in results than go
for Mr. sarang`s suggestion.

Bushings or moisture in insulation may be the cause of poor tan delta value. Only oil
filtration will not be effective. Better to carry out short circuit heating of the job along with
the oil filtarion.

dear Abhijeet, do you mind to share if when your case successful after several tries, can
you let us know what is your solution or what is your decision? thanks.

Thank you all for extending your inputs. Pleased to inform you that the problem has been
rectified. FYI the core coil assembly was put under vacuum for 4 hours and heated for 36
hours and the tan delta values measured as under:
High Voltage: (At 10 kV): GST mode: 0.424, GSTg mode: 0.648 and UST mode: 0.338
Low Voltage: (At 5 kV): GST mode: 0.386, GSTg mode: 0.417 and UST mode: 0.358
Please suggest if the aforesaid values are under permissible limit, and convey the
Standard, clause.

For bushing and winding the permissible limit is .007 and the rate of raised should be
less than .001. In case any one of data found crossing limit than necessary action to be
taken .
