1.1 Overview

General
This document gives an overview of the functionality of ENI-4. At the
same time, it includes an instruction for the installation and initial
configuration of the ENI-4 server with regard to the connection of an
EPAS-4 project to a database. The programs ENI Admin and ENI Control,
which are needed for the administration of the ENI-4 Server, are installed
at the same time. The tool ENI Explorer can be installed by means of the
user-defined installation.

1.1

Overview
ENI-4 is the ENgineering Interface of the EPAS-4 programming system. It
consists of a server and a client part. The ENI-4 server runs as a
separate service. Typical clients are one or several EPAS-4
programming systems and tools accessing the same sources managed
in a common data storage system. The use of ENI-4 offers some
essential advantages. For the work with EPAS-4, it permits a version
management for EPAS-4 projects, multi-user operation and access to
the project database by external programs.

1.1.1

Supported Database Systems

The server concept enables working with access to a common database
installed on a remote computer. By default, the ENI-4 Server currently
supports a local file system and the database systems Microsoft Visual
SourceSafe, MKS Source Integrity and PVCS Version Manager.

1.1.2

Communication with the ENI-4 Server

The connection between client and ENI-4 Server requires TCP/IP.
Therefore TCP/IP must be installed both on the client and on the server.

1.1.3

ENI-4 in Combination with EPAS-4

The use of ENI-4 in the EPAS-4 programming system is optional. For
further information on this project option, please see User Manual
EPAS-4.

PD_OperaMa_ENI-4_en.doc

ELAU AG recommends not to use ENI for versions older than EPAS-4
V16.

Location of 'ss.exe':
Enter the path to the file ss.exe.
Example:
If you installed Visual SourceSafe in the directory
"c:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio\VSS",
you have to enter the following path:
"c:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio\VSS\win32".

PVCS
Version Manager

Projects File:
Several databases of PVCS Version Manager can be addressed via the
ENI-4. For this purpose, the databases need to be made known to the ENI4. This requires the file Projects.ini. All databases and the corresponding
archives to be addressed via the ENI-4 must be entered in this file. If a new
database is created, the file needs to be adjusted. A sample file can be
found in the ENI-4 program folder
(Default: C:\Program Files\ELAU\ENI-4 V1\Projects.ini).
It must be a plain text file with the following structure:
[Projects]
xxx=yyy
default=yyy
[Archives]
xxx=yyy\archives
default=yyy\archives

The entries [Projects] with the keyword "default" and [Archives] with the
keyword "default" are important. They must always exist. The existing
databases are entered in the [Projects] section, while the archives of the
respective databases from the [Projects] section are entered in the
[Archives] section (usually this means adding \archives to the project
name). In addition to the keyword default, you always have to enter the
database directory of the default database and the archive directory of
the matching database after the = sign. You can enter any number of
databases. Please note that the placeholder xxx represents the name of
the database in the ENI-4 and yyy always represents the folder of the
corresponding database.
Example:

PD_OperaMa_ENI-4_en.doc

[Projects]
Datenbank_01=d:\Datenbank_02
Datenbank_02=d:\Datenbank_03
default=d:\Datenbank_01
[Archives]
Datenbank_01=d:\Datenbank_02\archives
Datenbank_02=d:\Datenbank_03\archives
default=d:\Datenbank_01\archives

All databases (in this example, Datenbank_02 and Datenbank_03) inherit

their properties from the default database. For this reason, all databases
must use the same configuration file and the same access control database
of the default database (in this example, in folder
d:\Datenbank_01\archives). You can save the projects to any place you like.
ELAU AG

User Manual

Page 15

Installation
Temporary folder:
Enter the temporary folder you created when creating the new project
database PVCS VM (in this example, C:\temp).
ENI-4 user, ENI-4 password:
As soon as the option "Access control database security" is activated in
PVCS VM, you have to enter a user and password that is valid in PVCS
VM. A user eni was created during the installation of PVCS Version
Manager. For this reason, enter the user eni with password eni.
PVCS Dll Path:
Enter the path to the file vmwfdtk.dll. Example: If you installed PVCS VM
in the directory
c:\Program Files\vm, you have to enter the following path:
"c:\Program Files\pvcs\vm\common\bin\win32" (If you selected the
default path during the installation of PVCS VM, you do not need to
make any settings here).
PVCS Configuration File:
Enter the path of the configuration file (*.cfg). By default, it is located in
the subdirectory archives of the project directory you created when
creating the new project database PVCS VM (in this example,
"d:\PVCS_ENI-4_Project_Folder\archives"). This directory includes a file
with the extension *.cfg. Please select this file in the file selection box. All
other databases have to use the same configuration file. For this reason,
you should always select "Use an existing Configuration File" and "Use
an existing Access Control Database" in the tab "Advanced" when
creating new projects.
Update PVCS GUI?:
Enables an automatic update of the PVCS surface. Please note that it takes
more time to create and delete objects, rather than to deactivate the option.

NOTE
To update the PVCS GUI surface automatically, an Access Control
Database must be set. The login dialog must be activated in the menu
"Configure->General->Security->Login Sources" and it must be at the
top of the list.
When using the PVCS Version Manager, also observe the notes in
Chapter "Completing the Installation"!

Completing the Installation

When you start up your system, the ENI-4 Server should now start
automatically and be ready to use. In this case, the Current Status
Running is shown in ENI Admin and the ENI-4 icon in the task bar is
highlighted.
After a successful installation and every time the computer is started, the
ENI-4 Server service is started automatically, the ENI-4 icon in the task
bar is highlighted.

2.3

Administration and Configuration of the ENI-4 Server

NOTE
The installation and administration of the ENI-4 Server with the tools
ENI Admin and ENI Control require administrator rights.

The software also includes the installation of the programs ENI Control
and ENI Admin for the administration and handling of the ENI-4. If you
opt for a user-defined installation (select Tools!) you can additionally
select the tool ENI Explorer. However, this program is not serviced and
maintained by ELAU AG. Should you have any questions on handling
ENI-4 Explorer, please check the online help.

NOTE
ENI Control and ENI Admin must be started separately, but cannot run
at the same time. After the installation, these programs can be found in
the Start menu of the ENI-4 Server. They are also available via the
menu that opens when you right-click on the ENI icon in the task bar.

2.3.1

ENI Control
With ENI Control, you can make basic server settings that cannot be
changed during operation, e.g. database connection, communication
settings etc. Moreover, the ENI-4 Server can be started and terminated
with ENI Control.

2.3 Administration and Configuration of the ENI-4 Server

2.3.2

ENI Admin
With ENI Admin, you can configure users, groups and access rights and
execute license management functions even during operation.
User administration can be organized with the tool ENI Admin.
NOTE
In connection with ENI Admin, please observe the following notes:

If Visual Source Safe 6.0 is used as a version management tool,

there are restrictions in the individual selection of user name and
password. Each may consist of a maximum of 6 characters.

The tool ENI Admin can only be started if the ENI-4 Server is
running.

During a first installation, no password has been assigned; simply

enter no password when you start ENI Admin and confirm the dialog
with OK.

To establish a data connection via ENI-4 to the database, it is sufficient

to be validly registered as a user in the database. However, an additional
(previous) user definition in the ENI-Server may be sensible if e.g.
detailed access rights are to be defined.
For the definition of users in the ENI-4, please note:
To be able to use a user account created in ENI Admin, a corresponding
account (with identical name and password) must exist in the database.
Each user account should be assigned to a group. For this purpose,
select the desired group, click on Edit and add the desired user
accounts to the group.
Further information is available in the online help.

PD_OperaMa_ENI-4_en.doc

For Visual SourceSafe, for example, use Visual SourceSafe Admin for
user administration. Make sure that the right database is opened in the
version management tool.

4.3

Hardware Changes in the Computer of the ENI-4

Server
The licensing of the ENI-4 Server includes the hardware of the PC on
which the ENI-4 Server is installed. If the ENI-4 Server is installed on
another system, you need to request a new license from ELAU AG. You
may also have to request a new license if certain hardware components
in the PC are changed.
The following algorithm is used to detect the unambiguous system ID
when installing the ENI-4 Server license: If there are one or several
network cards, the MAC address of the primary network card is used. If
there is no network card, the serial number of the system hard disk is
used.
This results in the following cases that require new licensing:

The primary network card is removed or replaced by a new one.

There was no network card in the PC. Now a network card is

installed.

There is no network card: The system hard disk is replaced or the

boot directory is moved to another disk.

In all three cases, you need to request a new license from ELAU AG.
