Article 1 Intimate Partner Violence, Maternal Stress, Nativity, and Risk for Maternal
Maltreatment of Young Children
Catherine A Taylor, Neil B Guterman, Shawna J Lee, Paul J Rathouz. Intimate partner violence, maternal stress, nativity,
and risk for maternal maltreatment of young children.. The American Journal of Public Health, Volume 99, Number 1
(January 2009), pp. 175-183,

This article gives fine detailing statics and reference on how spanking and other corporal
punishments could affect the children behavior short term and long term. Also, corporal
punishment is one of the most important risk factor of child maltreatment, occurs when a child is
being treated in a cruel way. I’ve learned that most children who received corporal punishment
come from families whose parents experience IPV, which is Intimate Partner Violence; when a
spouse abuses another. I can agree on that statement, most children are abuse because of their
parent anger and frustration, the children tends to become the victim in the situation. On the long
term level physical punishment can of maltreatment cause serious problems with children such
as obese.

Article 2 Developments in Character: Reading and Interpretation in “The Children’s

Punishment” and “The Broken Comb”

E. S. Burt. Developments in Character: Reading and Interpretation in "The Children's Punishment" and "The
Broken... Yale French Studies, No. 69, The Lesson of Paul de Man (1985), pp. 192-210

This narrative article was kind of confusing at first; this is something you must read over
to fully understand what’s happening. In this article there was boy label hero, who begins to
enjoy the punishment he was receiving. The person that were giving him the punishment was his
school teacher that carries herself as a mother and also show mother authority to the students.
The teacher begins to just threat the students as their punishment but instead she switches it, this
time she actually spanked him. That didn’t do any better because he gain feelings for the teacher
and begin to disobey her just for the punishment. He does realize that if it were anyone else it
wouldn’t be that pleasant to him. In the second part of joyful punishment, he was than spank by
someone else and begins to keep all his thoughts to himself so that he wouldn’t get caught.

Article 3 Predicting Spanking of Younger and Older Children by Mothers and Fathers
Randal D. Day, Gary W. Peterson and Coleen McCracken. Predicting Spanking of Younger and Older
Children by Mothers and Fathers.. Journal of Marriage and Family, Vol. 60, No. 1 (Feb., 1998), pp. 79-94

This journal is more like a research paper. Research shows that 90% of parents spanked
their children with African Americans mothers reaching a high level. I’ve also learned that
younger children are spanked more than older children, probably because older children know
the difference between right and wrong. These parents are spanking children at a very young age.
My opinion is that once a child is 5 years of age, they are able to be spank bit, if the child is over
13 years of age I feel that the parents are better grounding them or even take something they
enjoy doing away from them. What make the article clear and understandable are the charts and
tables.

Article 4 To Live –and Die—in Dixie: A Contribution to the Study of Southern Violence

John S. Reed. To Live –and Die—in Dixie: A Contribution to the Study of Southern Violence.. Political Science
Quarterly, Vol. 86 No. 3(Sept1971)pp.429-443

The south has approved the use of corporal punishment in their homes and also in the
schools. Although the percentage is not that much of a difference from other parts of the country,
the south still have a lot of violence taking place. This article is not only about corporal
punishment, it’s about violence as one. The author considers corporal punishment as a factor of
violence. I disagree strongly, you punished your child when they are disobedient so that you are
sure they wouldn’t go out and participate in violence. I would have to agree to a certain extent, it
depends on how the parents using the corporal punishment. They stated that most southern
spanked their children is because their education level. They feel that they are less educated than
others. My personally attitude about this particular statement is that doesn’t matter how much
education you have, it’s your beliefs.

Article 5 Social Class and Corporal Punishment in Childrearing: A Reassessment

Howard S. Erlanger.Social Class and Corporal Punishment in Childrearing: A Reassessment

American Sociological Review, Vol. 39, No. 1 (Feb., 1974), pp. 68-85

Punishment can also be determined by the different social classes. The middle class use
psychological punishment while the working class often uses physical punishment. In a survey,
people was asked about their attitude on spanking it didn’t vary with the social classes, it was
based on race. Most parents stated that they spanked their children after being disobedient all
day, had been expelled from school, and also broken a law. Another article I made was as people
with less education spanked their children but this article stated the total opposite. They feel that
people with less education tends to reject spanking their children.
