rriving this month are two separate, but related, publications: The 2009 Transmission Digest
Buyers Guide and the 2009 Transmission
Digest Powertrain Directory. At first similar, these are
two specific tools for your use. In this, the guide,
youll find an alphabetical listing of leading industry
suppliers (page 32) and an exhaustive listing of the
applicable products they supply to this marketplace
(page 43).
In the directory that was bagged with this guide,
youll find a similar listing of supplier companies
with sales, distribution and manufacturing branches
and key personnel listed as well. This is useful when,
for instance, youre looking for a nearby office for one
of the national distributors that serves the transmission aftermarket. A second list in the directory is an
alphabetical list of key personnel that these suppliers
wanted to list. Often youll find direct-dial telephone
numbers, toll-free numbers, e-mail addresses and
even cell-phone numbers. We suggest that the
Powertrain Industry Directory makes a great phone
book of the industry. I keep one on my desk year
round.
In all listings, U.S. addresses have been updated by
the United States Postal Service database and may
not directly reflect the addresses provided by the
suppliers. The postal database standardizes abbreviations and address structures according to USPS standards.
The traditional charts and graphs that come from
the annual Transmission Digest survey of reader shops
are, this year, in the Powertrain Industry Directory as
well.
Finally, this is a large undertaking for the people
here at Transmission Digest. We work very hard to
make sure every listing is presented accurately. That
said, please look at this column in the May issue for
any corrections or updates that have been brought to
our attention.

verts this signal to a DC pulsed
signal through its AD (analog-todigital) converter. This converted
pulsed signal is then sent to the
combination meter (CM), or what
we would normally call the instrument cluster. So you have the sine
wave in and the pulsed
square wave out.
2
The image in Figure 2
is with the wheel turning,
so it shows the pulses. If
the wheel were stopped, it
would be a straight voltage line. What needs to be
noticed here is that this is
a pulsed 12-volt signal,
which then is sent to the
CM, not the PCM.
The CM has a module
on the back of it that
serves as a mini-computer
or ECU for the meter.
According to Lexus tech,
the combination-meter
module refines the
3
waveform/signal sent
from the ABS/VSC module and then sends it out.
It goes to the PCM, navigation ECU, cruise control
and multi-display unit
(MDU) with one wire
from the CM to a junction
block, and the signal is
dispersed to the other
modules from there.
Figure 3 shows a good
signal sent out from the
CM.
When the ignition is
turned on you get a
4
straight 5 volts, with no
pulsed signal being sent
from the ABS/VSC module. This is the CM sending a signal to the PCM at
key on so the PCM knows
the circuit is good and
wont set a P0500 as soon
as the ignition is turned
on and no real-time signal
is sent until the vehicle
moves. So the AC signal is
sent to the ABS/VSC
module from the WSS as
the wheel turns. The

CM assembly, we got a
surprise. Figures 5, 6
and 7 show what we received. This is the face
panel with gauges and
the CM ECU. This is
what Lexus seems to
consider a complete unit.
Needless to say, that is a
somewhat-frustrating
6
situation, not because
you have to disassemble
and reassemble the entire assembly to install
the boards but because
there is a third circuit
board in the CM that is
not replaced, leaving
room for doubt.
With the circuit
7
boards replaced, we installed the now rebuilt
CM assembly to see how
well it was fixed. In this
instance, it was not fixed
quite enough. The vehicle now had a functioning speedometer, but we
still got the P0500, the

lights were on, and there
was no speed signal on
the scan tool checking
the PCM. Dang all
these diagnostics and a
new CM, and it was only
partly fixed. We retested
the signal from the CM
to the PCM and got the
same darn thing (Figure
8).
So, now we had to determine where our voltage had gone. We
removed the MDU and
the center of the dash to
get to the J3 junction block, which
splits up the speed signals, one in
from the CM and four out: to the
navigation ECU (NAV ECU), PCM,
cruise control and MDU (Figure 9
on page 12). We left the feed from
the CM connected and cut out the
NAV ECU and MDU so the signal
would still be sent to the PCM and
10
cruise-control modules. We
checked these for shorts to ground
while the wires were cut, and the
NAV ECU showed to be shorted.
Anyway, we fired it back up
and tried it and checked the signal
at the PCM, with only the PCM
and cruise control still in the circuit. Cool; we had a good signal at

Precision matters.
QUALITY TRANSMISSION SOLENOIDS
FROM THE GLOBAL LEADER IN AUTOMATIC
TRANSMISSION SYSTEMS TECHNOLOGY.
A not-so-obvious example
A torque-converter rebuilder
started to notice a higher-than-normal comeback rate on one of his
Ford converters. The converters
were coming back wiped out, and
the Bakelite stator caps were coming out looking like small black
marbles. The fluid smelled like 90weight gear lube and the paint on
the converters was burnt, so he
knew that the converters were
overheating. At first he blamed the
customers, but too many were having the same problem. At one point
a converter came back with the
paint burnt, but the converter had
not self-destructed. When the shop
cut the converter open, the only
20
thing they found out of the ordinary was small blisters on the side
of the stator cap.
The shop owner reasoned that
the stator caps were not standing
up to the heat and were causing the
converters to fail. The only flaw in
his theory was that his friend (also
a torque-converter rebuilder) was
using the same stator caps and was
not having any problems. He asked
his friend to check his rebuild procedure, to make certain that he was
not doing anything wrong. The
friend found that the converter had
too much internal clearance and explained that the excessive internal
clearance was probably causing the
converters to overheat.
At first the rebuilder thought
that his friend was talking about
the converters end play. When the
friend explained what he meant by
internal clearance, the rebuilder
said that in his 30-plus years of rebuilding torque converters he had
never checked the internal clearance and did not believe that it
could cause the problem. He reluctantly agreed to check and adjust
his converters internal clearance
for a short time. Since then his
comeback rate on the Ford converters has returned to normal, and a
couple of other problems that had
not been recognized also went
away. Checking and adjusting internal clearance has become an important part of his
converter-rebuilding procedure.
FYI
The stator cap in Figure 2 was in
a low-mileage rebuilt GM converter that was returned to a builder
because of a transmission-related

of 40% of its parts were Legend carryover. Some problems were also carried
over, including a commonly occurring
code: the P0401. This exhaust-gas-recirculation (EGR) problem code was the
norm on the 1996-to-2004 3.5-liter
Acuras because, as any experienced
tech can tell you, they are all too familiar. Starting with the very first 1986
Acura Legend, main relays would intermittently fail. Heat buildup under
the dash was the most-likely cause, but
this problem went on for more than a
decade. Poor electrical connections also
made for more than a few visits to the
shop.
According to Identifix, the Vehicle
Stability Assist (VSA) system has
prompted a lot of calls to its tech line.
There is a scan-tool software issue that
will set a code 98 in the VSA system.
Once the code is set it is hard to clear.
Identifix has come up with a good solution. To clear the code, disconnect the
scan tool and follow these steps:
1. Keep your foot off the brake pedal
and depress the parking-brake pedal.
2. Press and hold the VSA off button
at the same time and turn the ignition
switch to on.
3. Hold the VSA off switch until the
system beeps four times and then release the switch.
4. Watch the VSA light for more than
three seconds. If the indicator comes
on and blinks six times, the code is
cleared.
As with any model, it is the tricks
and vehicle-specific information that
can make all the difference. One proven
way to fix poor electrical connections is
the application of Stabilant 22a, a conductivity enhancer. One drop will ensure an electrical connection that will
transfer electrons with ease. Standard
Motor Products lists this as SL-5 in its
catalog. Technical Service Bulletin No.

gear and annulus gear that provides for high and low ranges
(Figure 3 on page 30). The lowrange ratio is 2.64-1. On the dash
panel is a four-button control
switch that enables the driver to
shift between mode and range positions.
During normal driving the unit
will operate in 4W High, which allows torque to be split between the
prop shafts as needed. The next
range is 4W High Locked, which
locks the prop shafts to a 50/50
torque split and should be used
only off road on loose or slippery
surfaces. The last range is 4W Low
Locked, in which both prop shafts
are locked in a 50/50 torque split,
and the low-range planet changes
the output ratio to 2.64-1. This
again should be used only off road.
Driving in either of the locked
ranges on dry pavement will cause
crow hop, tire scrub and driveline
windup that will release with a
bang.
Tire size and pressures must be
equal to avoid these same symptoms. This is a shift on the fly
unit with driver selection of any of
the ranges possible at speed within
design parameters. Low-locked
range can be achieved only with
the engine running, transmission
in neutral and road speed under 3
mph.
There is a neutral position in
this transfer case. Pushing any of
the selection buttons to achieve a
shift will cause the light for the desired position to flash, proving that
the transfer-case control module
got the message and is sending a
signal to the electronic
encoder/motor to shift the transfer
case. When the desired shift is
complete, the engaged gear will be

Solenoid codes stored with failsafe
Complaint:
The vehicle comes in for a fluid change, and after
the fluid change is completed, the transmission is in
failsafe; in some instances the TCM is found to be
faulty. None of these complaints existed before the
fluid change.
Cause:
The internal wire harness in the main valve-body
area, where the filter is situated, is encased in a plastic conduit (Figure 1) that hardens over time.
Filter breaks conduit,
exposing wire splice
Short occurs

Brittle
conduit
Correction:
The type of failure that will occur depends on the
year of the vehicle. 1990-1993 vehicles are equipped
with a Bosch TCM, which controls the solenoids on
the power side. A short causes solenoid codes to
store and a failsafe condition.
1994 and later vehicles are equipped with a Delco
TCM, which controls the solenoids on the ground
Service Information:
As a side note, this transmission is also in some
BMW models as well as the Cadillac Catera. The
solenoids in these vehicles are controlled on the
ground side. Therefore, it is possible to have the
same TCM failure. TD

exact same problem and had discovered that it was due to a fault in
the rear stub-axle nuts, which were
just loose enough to cause loss of
the pre-load that holds the ABS
speed-sensor ring to the shaft. This
allowed the sensor ring to intermittently stop moving, and the reaction caused the computer to place
the transmission into neutral and
not produce a code. Tightening the
nuts resolved the problem.
We have seen differences in tire
diameters of as little as 18 inch
causing a variety of shift-related
complaints, but to neutralize a
transmission during light-throttle
coast was a surprise to me. Having
software to view ABS data is an absolute must in todays transmission diagnostics and repairs. The
capability to view live wheel-speed
data could detect a problem like
this or to see whether the computer
initiated the curve-recognition
strategy while the vehicle was
going straight. ABS and tractioncontrol data are making serious
headway into the computer shift
strategy of the transmission, especially when it has been designed to
be the main source for a vehiclespeed signal. But it, too, can be a
problem if it was designed to be a
redundancy signal should the
transmission vehicle speed sensor
fail.
The next scenario has to do with
an RE5F22A transmission in a 2005
Nissan Maxima that an AAMCO

thought those of you who are mechanics might get a kick out of reading
about it while at the same time being
able to relate to it.
I have a 70-inch LCD rear-projection
television set. It is, to my knowledge,
the largest LCD TV you can buy without spending more than $20,000. I
bought it new four years ago from
Abes of Brooklyn, a New York wholesale appliance dealer. The set was selling in the big-box stores at the time
for about $7,500. Abey let it go for
$5,000 delivered. Its been a good TV,
not to mention conversation piece. I
love it and must admit that Im addicted to its size. I now have trouble
watching anything smaller.
This TV uses a super-bright halogen
bulb that changes its white light to colored pixels by projecting through three
tiny LCD panels that are red, green and
blue, the three basic colors out of
which all other colors, except white,
are created. It does this through a series of mirrors and lenses that eventually project the image to the back of the
screen. Sounds simple enough.
In watching the TV I had noticed
that lately I had to crank up the brightness setting to get a good picture. I had
been told when I bought the TV that
the bulb eventually would go bad and
that I would have to replace it (a simple job; it plugs in through the front of
the TV via an access panel). I wasnt
worried, especially because the price of
those bulbs has dropped from around
$400 to the $95 for which you can now
buy them. I thought that the brightness
problem was a result of a worn-out
bulb. I did have one concern, though.
There were these strange-looking blue
blobs starting to develop on the screen.
I could barely see them at first, but
they were there. I thought that maybe
