PURPOSE
The purpose of this document is to ensure a consistent and unified company-wide approach in the
production of engineering drawings.
The intent is to guide the reader through the steps to be taken when producing a drawing. In addition
the procedure describes a uniform and logical approach in order to ensure easy-to-read layouts for all
CAD drawings.
SCOPE
This procedure is applicable to all drawings generated within ICE for all types of projects. In addition
drawings produced by subcontractors to ICE shall be subject to the same procedure.

The administrative part is located on the right hand side of the drawing, extended from bottom to
top, dedicated to the following elements wherever these are applicable: property stamp, title block,
revision list, stickers / stamps, holds block, notes, list of reference documents, key plan, list of
materials. The administrative part is described in instructions 5.2.1 to 5.2.9 of this document.
The drawing part indicates the area upon which arrangements, views, elevations, sections,
diagrams, etc. shall be drawn. The standards to be used for the drawing part are described in detail in
instructions 5.3.1 to 5.3.9 of this document.
The both parts are divided by a vertical line only on first page of drawing.

Notes
The Notes give general information about the parts shown on the drawing concerning materials,
welds, treatment, Class Notation, etc.
The Notes shall be numbered sequentially for reference purposes. In case a note becomes redundant
and will be removed from a subsequent revision, the numbering will not be re-sequenced.
CAD coordinators within the various departments are to ensure that the standard of appearance of
Notes is consistent throughout all departments. Special care is to be taken in order to ensure that
naming conventions and abbreviations are applied consistently. (e.g. use of the abbreviation for
centreline is CL instead of C.L., etc.).

This area of a drawing sheet is designated solely for graphical representations such as plan views,
elevations, sections, details, diagrams, schematics, etc. It is vitally important that views must always
be laid out in a logical, consistent and easy-to-read manner in accordance with the following rules:
-
the frame numbering (frame ruler) of one view is to align with the frame numbering of others;
section views are to be aligned and laid out such that they are in a logical numeric sequence;
datums (e.g. centrelines, baseline) are to align from one view to another;
details are to be identified and positioned in a logical alphanumeric sequence;
plan views of decks must be tiered one above the other in sequence with the lowermost deck
at the bottom of the drawing area and the uppermost deck at the top of the drawing area.
Only under exceptional and agreed circumstances are these rules to be infringed.
Further information regarding projection methods, scales, titles, dimensioning, referencing, etc. are
given in instruction parts 5.3.1 to 5.3.9 of this document.

Model Space is an environment in which all drawing components are drawn at a scale one to one,
and millimetre is the preferred measurement unit. The drawings must be positioned versus the
defined coordinate system. This will enable an accurate integration / superimposition between various
drawings.
Paper Space / Layout is an environment enabling the creation of sheet layouts for plotting purposes.
Paper Space is not intended to be used for full scale drawings.
A drawing may be created in one of two ways:
-
Inside Model Space: views, cross-sections, details, dimensions, different types of blocks
(revision clouds, item number, weld symbols, etc.) at a scale 1:1, and inside Paper Space:
Administrative Part and viewports.
Entirely within the Model Space when the previous method proves to be troublesome. In
this case the main view is created at a scale of 1:1. All entities consisting of plan views,
elevations, sections, details, text, dimensions, title block, border, etc are to be scaled to
suit the intended drawing plot size.
Creating a model.
Creating a Paper space Lay-out;
Creating Viewports;
Sizing / dimensioning and inserting symbols, item numbers and text.
Creating a model
It is important that the model is created in a logical and orderly manner, so it will be clear to anyone
who uses the drawing as an eXternal-Reference.
When attaching reference files, the path to this file should only be named as No Path. Set

Creating Viewports
As a standard, a layer is made with the name Viewport. Otherwise this layer should be created. The
existing viewport must be produced at a desired scale (i.e. 1:50) and then be locked. The viewport will
be sized and positioned upon the drawing area. Any other necessary viewport is to be created, scaled
and sited as above.

Projection method
The method shown by Reference Arrows is mainly used for ship work rather than the First Angle
Projection Method.
The ICE projection method used is the European projection - first angle projection (ISO 5456-1).
Principal view
If the use of European projection method is not suitable due the lack of space in the drawing format,
then another possibility for representation of projections is by using Reference Arrows:

Projections A and B (view from A or view from B) can be placed below principal view in a single row.
Sections parallel with A or B will be subject to the same treatment.
Projections C and D (view from C or view from D) can be placed in the same row with the principal
view in the right side. Sections parallel with C or D will be subject to the same treatment.
Naming conventions for views are as follows:
profile view meaning projection looking from starboard to port;
plan view on main deck - meaning looking vertically downwards on main deck;
plan view on platform - meaning looking vertically downwards on platform;
plan view on tank top - meaning looking vertically downwards on tank top;
section view at frame, e.g. Fr.100 - meaning cross-section (at Fr 100) looking from aft to
forward.
In general, the principal view should be the most informative, being the most recognisable during
manufacture or use.
References:
- ISO 5456-1 - Technical Drawings. Projection methods.
By exception and only when necessary, section views looking from forward to aft may of necessity have to
be used for the sake of clarity. In these circumstances such views will be clearly identified as looking aft.

Revision Indication
Modifications for new revisions are indicated by a Cloud around the revised part(s). Clouds are only
shown for the latest (actual) revision and only when the revision status is updated.
Title block and revision list will be completed in all sheets of the drawing, see 5.2.2.
One specific layer will be defined for each revision status. When a new revision occurs, the previous
revision clouds and symbols remain on their specific layers which are switched off. In this way the
revision history is kept.

Preparation of CAD drawings will entail specific procedures and the use of tailor-made provisions,
such as reference files, layer arrangements, blocks, AutoCAD Auto lisp, Visual Basic programs and
commands.
Recording and filing of CAD drawings differs from those directly draughted by means of non-CAD
methods such as hand-draughted/non CAD produced drawings.
CAD drawings are to be prepared in such a way that they are compatible with, and easily converted
to, the various other CAD systems that may be in use.

- Essential features of CAD drawings are given in the instruction 5.4.1 5.4.3 of this
document.

CAD blocks
Blocks (for AutoCAD) are displays of standard elements, such as symbols, equipment, outfitting and
auxiliary structures.
Blocks are discipline related and maintenance of the block library is consequently allocated to the
appropriate departmental CAD coordinator, under global responsibility of the CAD coordinator, who is
also responsible for the maintenance of the blocks for general use.
The structure for organizing block libraries is as follows:
O:\ICE Standards\PROJECT SYSTEMS\
- ICE Menu
- Library
- Symbols;
- Models;
- Lisp (CAD commands)
- Menu (pull-down menus)
- Template (different templates)
Notes:
1. For some projects, specific blocks are created; those blocks (not belonging to the blocks for a
certain discipline or for a specific client) are stored in project libraries (and will be stored in the
computer backup for that order).
2. In order to create a new block in the project library, the following steps are to be used:
- the entities must be drawn in layer 0. The entities will be drawn with colour, line type
and line weight attributes set BY LAYER. If necessary, these characteristics will be
changed according to drawing standards.
- upon block completion, it will be saved by using WBLOCK command, into the folder
corresponding with block destination or will be sent to CAD coordinator to do this
operation.
