TAKING STEPS
IN YOUR
JEWISH JOURNEY
hat do you need from this High Holy Days season? Perhaps it is
spiritual renewal an opportunity to feel a part of something
bigger than yourself. Perhaps it is meaningful family and community time a chance to engage with those you love through deeper dialogue
and a shared experience that spans the generations. Perhaps it is the reminder
to work even harder to make a dierence in this world an organized opportunity to give tzedakah (charity) or to perform an act of gmilut chasadim (loving-kindness).
Perhaps this High Holy Days season you want to reconnect with parents,
spouses, siblings or children whether in this world or in the spirit world. Perhaps it is an encounter with the divine quality time giving thanks to our
Creator for the blessings in your life or repenting for mistakes made. Perhaps
it is the joy that comes from family, or community, or great music, or enriching
learning opportunities or all of the above.
What do you need from the High Holy Days season and how are you
going to work to achieve that?
From spirituality to family time to social action to memory to a relationship
with God to joyful living, your Congregation Shaarey Zedek family is on a
shared journey toward inspiration and transformation; our goal is truly to
touch lives. Whatever it is you seek from this High Holy Days season, I am
condent you can nd it within the walls of your spiritual home, or as a result
of that which happens in your shul. Please take the time to peruse these pages
and to seek to take one more step in your own personal Jewish journey.
What do you need from the High Holy Days season and how are you
going to work to achieve that?
From my family to yours, may it be a joyful, healthy and blessed New Year
for us all.
Rabbi Aaron Starr
Please be sure to bring your High Holy Days tickets with you.
Please consider inviting a friend with you who might enjoy our
High Holy Days experience. To obtain additional tickets, please
contact the Synagogue oce.
Please remember in the hallways and in the parking lot that this
is the Season of Judgment! Please walk and drive safely and
courteously.
Consider keeping cell phones and wallets in your vehicle.
Introduce yourself to those you do not know and wish everyone
you see Shanah Tovah (Happy New Year)!
It is customary on Yom Kippur to avoid wearing leather.
Consider purchasing canvas shoes or a canvas belt.
On Kol Nidre evening, please remember to bring your tallit
(prayer shawl).
On Yom Kippur, please consider spending the whole day in the
Synagogue.
On Yom Kippur, while it is a mitzvah (commandment) to fast,
it is a mitzvah NOT to fast if fasting threatens your health or
inhibits your ability to take life-preserving medication.
Please consider choosing one new Jewish activity to engage in
this coming year. Lighting Shabbat candles (even once a
month)? Having Shabbat dinner? Committing to volunteering
more? Increasing your charitable giving? Participating in a Jewish
learning opportunity?

GLOGOWERS
GREETINGS
Shana tova, umetuka. As I sit on the cusp of the New
Year, I pause to take stock of what Ive done with the
last year. Of course I resolve to be better, but I also
stop to pray for sweet and happy year spiritually,
mentally, and materially.
In Sisterhood we perform acts of kindness and charity. We gather
together in shul and at events, and share in a sense of community and
camaraderie that blend to oer a place where each and every one of us is
welcomed and valued.
We stand on the shoulders of those who have gone before, while
depending on the condence, friendship, trust, care and concern that we
show each other. We operate as a team, and all of us are important.
Please join us in Sisterhood as the New Year begins. Leave behind all
your anger, pain, fear, and sadness as the year makes a fresh start. Be with
us as we practice acts of kindness and remember those around us, and
those who are less fortunate. Help us inuence our friends to celebrate
the teachings of the torah and the mitzvoth. Together let us pray for God
to heal and strengthen all of those in need both in body and soul.
May you be inscribed and sealed in the book of life for a good, sweet
year ahead.
