I-shift - Software - ishift_sw_intro.swf - 2006-10-18 - 15:56

I-shift software
The functionality of the I-shift gearbox depends on the installed software functions.
There are three types of software functions:
- Standard functions
- Package functions
- Optional functions
Standard functions are always available.
Package functions are included in the different software packages. Every software package
includes a number of different software functions.
Optional functions can be added to the different packages to allow for specialized functionality.

I-shift - Software - ishift_sw_std_pshift.swf - 2006-10-18 - 15:56

Standard functions - Performance Shift

The gearchanges are optimized regardless of the external conditions (for example road
inclination (gradient), oil temperature and gear ratio.
This is done through use of the engines compression brake (EPG/VEB), the clutch and the
countershaft brake.
The result is increased comfort and minimized shift times.

I-shift - Software - ishift_sw_std_basicshift.swf - 2006-10-18 - 15:56

Standard functions - Basic shift strategy

A start gear from 1:st to 6:th gear will be automatically selected. The actual selection is done
depending on the vehicle weight (only with ECS) and road inclination (gradient).
There is also a trailer connector detection function in the LCM which adjusts the starting gear
when connecting and disconnecting a trailer.

I-shift - Software - ishift_sw_std_basicadj.swf - 2006-10-18 - 15:56

Standard functions Basic PTO Functions

It is possible to define which splitter gear that is selected when transmission PTO is used. Using
high or low splitter gear when running the PTO will result in different PTO speeds.

I-shift - Software - ishift_sw_std_epmodes.swf - 2006-10-18 - 15:57

Standard functions Economy/Performance Modes

This function adds the possibility to select between Economy and Performance modes. The
modes are selected with the E/P-button on the gear selector.
The mode currently active is shown in the display.
Economy
The strategy here is be to keep the engine revs inside the green field of the rev-counter to get
as good fuel economy as possible.
Performance
Here the engine revs are allowed to go above the green field so that the engines maximum
power can be used.
The available rpm-range is still wide enough to allow the gearbox to skip gears when possible.
Performance mode is automatically switched off after a couple of minutes if the driver does not
use the high engine speeds.

I-shift - Software - ishift_sw_pack_eco.swf - 2006-10-18 - 15:57

Package functions - Eco Roll

Eco Roll is a system designed to minimize the trucks rolling resistance when no engine power is
needed. Minimizing the rolling resistance will allow the truck to roll as far as possible before the
engine is needed again.
When Eco Roll is engaged the split gear is set to neutral position. This means that the engine is
disconnected from the gearbox. The engine is then allowed to idle during the time when Eco
Roll is engaged.
The function gives best results in slightly hilly conditions.
More text to this picture on next page.
_
Eco Roll is engaged when the following six conditions are met:
- gear selector is in A (Automatic) position
- auxiliary brake stalk is in A (Automatic) position
- accelerator pedal is released
- brake pedal is not pressed
- downhill not steeper than 5%
- truck speed not too high (corresponding to 1800 rpm in top gear)
If any one, or more, of the six conditions are not met Eco Roll is disengaged.
Eco Roll can also be used when cruise control is activated.
If, for any reason, the engine stops running while the Eco Roll function is used the Eco Roll
function is automatically disengaged and the gearbox reconnected to the engine. This will
ensure that the servo assisted steering will be working.

I-shift - Software - ishift_sw_pack_smartcc.swf - 2006-10-18 - 15:57

Package functions - Smart Cruise Control

Normal cruise control have a function that engages the auxiliary brakes (VEB and EPG) if the
set cruise control speed is exceeded by more than a set limit. This limit can be adjusted by the
driver.
Smart Cruise Control will enable a function that limits the auxiliary brakes even though the
vehicle speed is above the brake cruise set speed when the road conditions are such that the
vehicle still will decelerate with reduced auxiliary brake power. When possible the Eco Roll is
also activated.
More text to this picture on next page.
_
Smart Cruise Control is engaged when the following four conditions are met:
- cruise control is activated
- gear selector is in A (Automatic) position
- auxiliary brake stalk is in A (Automatic) position
- accelerator pedal is released
- the offset speed for brake cruise is set to more than 5 km/h
- no engine PTO:s are activated

I-shift - Software - ishift_sw_pack_launch.swf - 2006-10-18 - 15:57

Package functions Launch Control*

This function adds the following features:
- will enable a function that allows clutch control at low vehicle speeds by use of the brake pedal
(see picture, the clutch is engaged by the accelerator pedal and disengaged by the brake pedal)
- will make it possible to run the vehicle at engine idle speed without slipping the clutch
- will control engine torque when driving in start gear in order to optimize gear shifting
performance and avoid running in high engine revs.
More text to this picture on next page.
_
The following functions requires that the EBS allows XBR (external brake request) from the
TECU.
- will automatically activate service brakes to stop the vehicle during start of vehicle when rolling
in wrong direction This feature requires Electronic Brake System (ABS-EBS) .
- will automatically activate service brakes to stop the vehicle in order to change gear during
vehicle speed direction change. This feature requires Electronic Brake System (ABS-EBS).
- when Hill Start Aid is enabled a Smart Hill Start Aid function will automatically activate a
delayed brake release when the vehicle is in a uphill slope but not when the it is in a down hill
slope. This feature requires the medium or high Electronic Brake System package (EBS-MED or
EBS-HIG).
* Full functionality requires EBS and ECS.

14

I-shift - Software - ishift_sw_pack_enhshift.swf - 2006-10-18 - 15:57

Package functions Enhanced Shift Strategy*

This function adds the following features compared with the basic shift strategy:
- improvement of the engine brake performance by continuously selecting gears that runs the
engine at high revs. When a compact retarder is installed, the cooling performance is increased
and accordingly the retarder braking performance.
- when driver activates manual control on the air suspension control box, the lowest possible
gear will automatically be selected to get the best possible control of the vehicle when driving
slowly. This feature requires Electronically Controlled Suspension levelling (ECS).
The following function requires that the EBS allows XBR (external brake request) from the
TECU.
- the service brakes are applied momentarily during gear shifts when engine braking to
compensate for the interruption of engine brake torque. This maximizes the engine braking
performance at the same time as giving an excellent comfort. This feature requires Electronic
Brake System (ABS-EBS) on the vehicle. This function will also be disabled if a trailer without
ABS is connected to the vehicle.
* Full functionality requires EBS-MED/EBS-HIG.

Optional Functions Gear selections in auto 2

This function adds the following features when using A (Automatic) mode:
Kick-down
The kick-down function will change the gear-shifting strategy.
The picture shows the three different driving modes that the driver can select.
- Economy
The strategy here is be to keep the engine revs inside the green field of the rev-counter to get
as good fuel economy as possible.
- Performance
Here the engine revs are allowed to go above the green field so that the engines maximum
power can be used.
The available rpm-range is still wide enough to allow the gearbox to skip gears when possible.
Performance mode is automatically switched off after a couple of minutes if the driver does not
use the high engine speeds.
- Kick-down
During kick-down the engine revs are allowed to go above the green field so that the engines
maximum power can be used.
The gearbox will also try to keep the engine revs high by not using gear-skipping.

Optional functions - Enhanced PTO Functions

This option makes it possible to activate the Power Take Off features described below by setting
software parameters in VCADS-pro. All of the below functions require that a BBM module is
installed in the vehicle (variants ELCE-CK or SPEED-DU)
This option adds the following features:
Gear selection restricted by engine speed limits
It is possible to set software parameters that will limit the engine speed when engine or
transmission PTO:s are used. This feature will adapt the gear selection strategy to these speed
limitations.
More text to this picture on next page.
_
Auto Neutral
The driveline will be disengaged on request from the BBM (Body Builder Module) regardless of
the gear lever position when the Auto Neutral function is active.
Reverse Inhibit
When the BBM requests reverse inhibit, the reverse gears is blocked by the transmission
system.
Split box engagement
It is possible to engage a split box for running high capacity PTO:s. The direct gear is engaged
when the Body Builder Module request that the split box is engaged.
