STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

MASTERS OF SCIENCE IN VEHICLE E NGINEERING

RAIL VEHICLES
I wish to pursue a career in Railways as an Engineer that involves research,
creative thinking, and challenging problems relevant to the industry in
particular and is also society in general. My keen interest in Design field
accompanied by good analytical skills, problem solving capabilities and
visualization which are the heart and core of research have prompted me to
go in for graduate studies.
As a child, I was always intrigued by the working of complex mechanisms
and equipment involved in a Rail Locomotives (both Diesel and Electric
Locomotives). I used to spend a lot of time trying to explore and figure out
their principle.
In school I found myself drawn towards subjects that required in-depth
analysis and logical thinking. I was awed by their simple fundamentals which
form the governing basis for a lot of machinery. In order to understand these
concepts I took part in science fairs and practical workshops. This exposure
taught me the importance of simple and practical design. To understand the
principles and practical aspects of designing a product I decided to pursue
my career in engineering.
I completed my 10th grade from Pragathi Vidyalaya, Kushaiguda, India in
2007 where I stood Second in Aggregate amongst all the students of the
school in the examination conducted by the Board of Secondary Education,
Andhra Pradesh by securing 81.3%.
I graduated from Sri Chaitanya Junior College, India, Securing 83.5% in the
examinations conducted by the Board of Intermediate Education Andhra

Pradesh in 2009 based on which I gained undergraduate admission at

Progressive Engineering College which is affiliated to Jawaharlal Nehru
Technological University Hyderabad (JNTU-H). A strong inclination towards
physics motivated me choose the field of Mechanical Engineering as my
undergraduate degree.
As an undergraduate student at Progressive Engineering College, India, I was
introduced to many courses and the prominent being, Production Technology,
Engineering Mechanics, Strength of Materials, Design of Machine Members,
Design for Manufacturing, Thermodynamics, Applied Thermodynamics, Heat
Transfer, Theory of Machines, Mechanics of Fluids and Hydraulic Machines,
Finite Element Method, Electrical and Electronics Engineering,
Instrumentation and Control Systems, Automobile Engineering, Refrigeration
and Air conditioning, Heat Transfer, Computer Aided Design and
Manufacturing. Job
Besides intensive laboratory and field work. I attended workshop courses
wherein I gained practical experience in casting, forming, machining, drilling,
boring, gear cutting, lathe machine operations, welding and finishing
operations. Introduction to computers in the curriculum created interest in
programming and thus I worked with different programming languages and
on some noted platforms. In the final year I have been in good touch with
Auto-CAD designing.
As per the requirements of the institute I was also exposed to the needs and
aspirations of the industry through a series of well-orchestrated lectures by
eminent people who are leaders in their field. These courses have helped me
build a strong foundation in Mechanical Engineering and laid the necessary
groundwork for pursuing graduate studies and have provided me with useful

insight into the principles, processes, stages and considerations required in

the field of product design.
After completing my under graduation with an aggregate of 71.83%, I got
employed in Juti Engineering Solutions Pvt. Ltd. Hyderabad, where I was
trained on Computer Aided Designing and Engineering programs (CAD &
CAE).
During this working period I got experience on Product Designing and
development and also got familiar with the Software Pro-E and Hyper works.
Working with Hyper works deepened my knowledge on Finite Element
Modeling and Analysis which helps me to evolve effective strategies to solve
practical problems related to Structural Design.
With undergraduate score and relative work experience in design field as my
base, my relevant knowledge in the field of Technologies being used in
Vehicles and my passion for Rail vehicles made me search for a master
courses on Railway Engineering in European Universities. I found that KTH
Royal Institute of technology, which has an excellent reputation for its
educational standards and also for offering many research opportunities is
educating the students on Rail Vehicles with its Maters Program on Vehicle
Engineering.
My objective is to enhance and strengthen my knowledge base in the field of
Mechanical Engineering particularly towards Railways. The ideal path
towards this, I feel, would be by pursuing graduate studies in Railway
Engineering. In the long run I seek to be the leader in my field, which
requires fostering of team spirit and good will besides intellectual and
creative enrichment.
I feel that KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden with its rich blend of
competent faculty, intense curriculum, and cherished history of success,

state of the art laboratories and multiethnic diversity among students would
be the ideal place to shape my career. The innovative research projects
being undertaken by your faculty along with the Masters Taught Programs in
Vehicle Engineering has influence me to apply to your university.
KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden with its team of highly motivated
and industrious graduate students would hence be the ideal start to my
career. I can assure you total commitment, dedication and hard work. I am
confident that joining your institution will give me the impetus in the right
direction to start my career and give me enough scope to master my chosen
field of interest.
Thank you for considering my application.
