A.

accessory: A component which can, at the discretion of the user be readily added,
removed, or replaced and which when removed, will not prevent the fitting from
fulfilling its primary function.

all wood: All components in the piece are wood. May include some combination of
solid wood and engineered wood.

artificial laminate: A surface of plastic, foil or paper printed with a wood grain
pattern and bonded to a composite such as particleboard or medium density
fiberboard.

burl: A tree knot or protruding growth that shows up as a pattern in the grain when
sliced. Used for inlays and veneers.

chair: A piece of furniture for sitting, consisting of a seat, back, and sometimes arm
rests, commonly for use by one person.

F.

desk: A piece of furniture with a writing surface and usually drawers or other
compartments.

G.

dovetail: A wedge-shaped tenon that fits into a corresponding cut-out space to form
an interlocking joint.

H.

dowel: Headless pin usually made of wood, used in the construction of furniture.

drawer: A sliding storage box or receptacle opened by pulling out and closed by
pushing in.

J.

engineered wood: Wood made from slices of lumber (plywood) or the chips and
fibers that remain after a tree is milled into lumber (particleboard or fiberboard).

K.

hardwood: Wood derived from angiosperms (broad leafed trees such as oak, beech,
maple, mahogany, and walnut). The category consists of some woods that are
actually much softer than "softwoods."

L.

hardwood frames: Frames which are made from hardwoods such as ash, oak, or
birch. These woods are usually kiln dried and resist splitting.

M.

high pressure laminates: Synthetic sheet surfacings that are bonded to a core
material. Laminates offer heat, soil, and stain resistance. They can be grain and color
matched to surrounding woods for use in dresser or bureau tops, or produces in
decorative colors used to surface entire contemporary bedroom suites.

inlay: A design of contrasting wood.

KD: "Knocked down." Furniture sold unassembled or partially assembled. More


commonly called "RTA."

kiln dried: Kiln drying reduces the moisture content of the lumber, a process which
inhibits checking, splitting and strengthens the finished product.

Q.

laminate: A product made by bonding together two or more layers (laminations) of


material or materials.

R.

medium density fiberboard: Made by breaking down wood chips into fibers, mixing
the fibers with glue, and fusing the resulting mixture under heat and pressure to
produce a board.

S.

particleboard: Chips of wood coated with glue and pressed into a board.

T.

plywood: Three to five thin slices of wood glued together like a sandwich under high
pressure.

U.

rabbet joint: A joint formed by fitting together boards into which rectangular grooves
have been cut. Also a recess in the meeting stiles of cabinet doors that close to form
a dust proof joint.

V.

rail joints: The places where the horizontal members of an upholstered frame meet.
These joints are often screwed, glued and doubled doweled for extra strength.

W.

RTA: "Ready to assemble." Furniture sold unassembled or partially assembled.


Sometimes called "KD" furniture.

X.

rule joint: A knuckle joint as between a table top and drop leaf that leaves no open
space when the leaf is down.

Y.

santoprene: It is a thermoplastic rubber designed to offer chemical resistance


equivalent to neoprene. It is resistant to a wide variety of solvents and chemicals. It
is not readily soluble in common solvents but will swell in aromatic solvents and
halogenated organic solvents.

Z.

soft woods: Wood from a conifer (cone bearing tree). Pine, cedar and redwood are
common examples.

AA.

solid wood: Can mean one single board or plank of wood or also several wood
boards or blocks that are glued together.

BB.

steam bend: A method of bending a single piece of wood (bowback chair, bowed
splat, etc.) into a furniture part. Since the wood grain is bent instead of cut, this
method yields exceptional strength.

CC.

tables: An article of furniture having a flat, horizontal surface supported by one or


more support members (legs), and a frame (apron).

DD.

tropical hardwood: Hardwood from a tropical forest, the most common of which is
mahogany.

veneer: A thin decorative layer of wood which is applied to underlying wood solids or
particleboard. Veneers are used to match and balance grain, create inlay and
banding effects.

FF.

vinyl wrap: Flexible vinyl wrapping applied to underlying wood solids or particleboard
to produce a surface that most often resembles wood. It is often used in less
expensive furniture applications.

1.06 SUBMITTALS
A.

The Contractor shall submit to the Royal Commission, under the provisions of
SECTION 01330, the following items for review and approval before commencing
Work:

A Schedule of all furniture and accessories proposed including name


and address of manufacturer, catalog numbers and cuts, complete
instructions, materials, colors, accessories, and other such descriptive
material as may be required for review.

In order to obtain final selection by the Royal Commission for the


furniture proposed, the Contractor shall make available for review at a
convenient location, other than the work site, examples representing a
typical selection of the furniture to be installed. At least one example of
each item shall be made available for review. The location for review
shall be agreed with the Royal Commission. This review shall be carried
out at an early stage of the Contract to avoid possible delays to the
program.

Certificates
a)

Official certificates of approval shall be supplied for all fire-resistant or


fire-proof items in accordance with the recommendations of the relevant
codes and regulations.

b)

The manufacturer shall provide the Royal Commission with test data
results and written certification that chairs furnished under this
Specification meet or exceed all applicable requirements of
ANSI/BIFMA X5.1 and this Specification. Such certification shall be in
accordance with the requirements of ANSI Z34.2, Self Certification by
producer or supplier.

1.07 QUALITY CONTROL

A.

The Contractor shall be responsible for the quality of work and shall develop and
propose programs and methods of construction and testing to achieve the specified
quality to the approval of the Royal Commission in accordance with SECTION 01450.

B.

All furnishings and textiles used shall consist only of non-inflammable materials in

accordance with all pertinent codes and regulations.


C.

The Contractor shall be responsible for the quality of all its supplies items and as
such, shall develop and submit a Supplier Quality Inspection Plan for review. The
inspection plan shall cover those items intended for shop inspection and the
procedures for carrying out same.

The Contractor shall comply with the applicable provisions of the referenced
codes and standards, except as otherwise shown and specified by the Royal
Commission.

Products used in the work of this Section shall be produced by manufacturers


regularly engaged in manufacturing furniture, and with a history of successful
production acceptable to the Royal Commission.

Internal Quality Control


1.

The Contractors internal quality control shall include but not be limited to:
a)

Checking suppliers test certificates and certificates of compliance to


conform to this Specification and referenced standards prior to assembly
or installation.

b)

Checking suppliers delivery tickets for compliance with supply order and
specification.

1.08 HEALTH AND SAFETY CONSIDERATIONS


A.

All works undertaken in relation to this Specification are to be completed in full


accordance with the respective health and safety requirements established by the
following:

1.09 DESIGN CRITERIA

The furniture must be easy to clean.

2.

It must have a construction that will hold up to rigorous use in the school
classroom for several years.

3.

It must also be simple and inexpensive to repair.

Storage
1.

Comfort

As students shall store some books and other materials during a class, the
storage should be easily accessible when materials are needed but shall be
out of the way when not in use.

The furniture must fit the wide range of body sizes in classroom with little
adjustment.

Safety
1.

The furniture must be stable enough not to allow the students to easily tip over
or break the furniture.

2.

No sharp edges will be exposed.

3.

Materials used must not be toxic to the students.

4.

The furniture must not lend itself to allowing students to harm themselves or
each other.

1.10 JOB CONDITIONS


A.

For delivery and installation of furniture, as defined by Contract scope documents,


building conditions are assumed to comply with AWI Standard 1700-G-3 and
1700-G-4 and be as follows:
1.

Flooring required to be placed under furniture and equipment has been being
installed.

2.

Heating and air conditioning systems shall provide consistent temperature and
humidity conditions complying with AWI Standard 1700-G-4 and 1700-G-5.

3.

Relative humidity shall not be less than 40%, or more than 60%.

4.

Temperature shall not be less than 18C (65F) and not greater than 27C
(80F) in areas of furniture installation.

Overhead mechanical, electrical and plumbing rough-in work shall be complete

prior to installation of furniture.


6.

Wet operations shall be complete prior to delivery.

1.11 WARRANTY
A.

Manufacturers Warranty
1.

3 years from date of delivery, covers defects in materials and workmanship.

1.12 DELIVERY, HANDLING AND STORAGE


A.

The Contractor shall deliver, handle and store equipment and material units in
accordance with SECTIONS 01650 and 01660, as well as the following
requirements:
1.

The furniture is to be delivered in a complete defect-free, undamaged and fully


operational condition and is to be installed in the appropriate room utilizing
proper storage, with all necessary protective measures included.

2.

In the event of damage to the installed furniture or to the finished work and
material of all other trades, the Contractor shall make all repairs and
replacements necessary at no additional cost to the Royal Commission.

PART 2

PRODUCTS

2.01 GENERAL
A.

All goods and products covered by these Specifications shall be procured, when
available, from an in-Kingdom manufacturer. Procurement of all goods and products
manufactured out-of-Kingdom must be approved by the Royal Commission.

2.02 MATERIALS
A.

General
1.

The forms, colors and design of all furniture and furnishings are to be
professionally coordinated and are to be correlated for each and within each
room type. All furniture and furnishing elements must be reviewed by the Royal
Commission prior to execution of the works.

2.

Only first quality volume-stable and durable materials having the


characteristics and requirements described in the specifications are to be
used. Materials which are altered by changes in temperature or in the
presence of humidity, or which generate odors or the like, shall not be used.

3.

All paints, stains, coatings, glues, etc., are to be performed in accordance with
the manufacturers instructions and recommendations for the relevant
situation.

4.

Plastics laminate surfaces and lipping shall be shop-applied using pressure


laminating techniques. Plastic laminate shall be at least 1.9 mm nominal
thickness.

5.

All steel, aluminum, melamine veneered and plastic formed materials are to
fulfill the following requirements:
a)

Non-glare, resistant to chemical cleaners, stains of fingers, ink, ballpens, pencils, etc. resistant to cigarette burns, scratchproof, and easily
cleanable.

6.

All visible and finished surfaces are to be perfectly color synchronous and free
from stains, damages, and other faults, resistant to light, heat and humidity,
and to have uniform surfaces.

7.

Types and colors of all upholstery fabrics are to be subject to review by the
Royal Commission.

8.

All aluminum parts are to be satin anodized natural color.

9.

All chromium plate shall be of the highest quality with no porous spots.

10.

Any timber parts shall be appropriately treated against blue stain, fungus and
insects.

11.

Imitation leather fabric is to be provided with a textile under cloth. The


materials are to be highly air and vapor permeable and light fastness is to be

guaranteed.

Finish wood shall be of teakwood or as approved by the Royal Commission,


sanded, sealed and polished clear matt finish.

13.

Locks shall be of dead latch type with sturdy steel body with brass latch bit
rounded edge for easier closing action.

14.

Pedestal base for swivel chair with seat height adjustable from 480 to 560 mm
from finished floor level. Pedestal shall be constructed from chrome plated
finished steel complete with 5 swivel castors in matt black nylon and steel.

15.

All joints, rivets, bolts, or other items connecting to stainless steel shall be
corrosion resistant.

Lumber
1.

Hardboard used in drawer bottoms and unexposed backs, shall consist of


super-refined wood fibers and chips, highly compressed into a hard, dense,
6 mm thick, homogeneous sheet, faced with wood grain pattern melamine on
the exposed face with the following minimum properties:

Average Modulus of Rupture:

3.5 kg/mm2

b)

Density :

0.6 kg/m3

c)

Modulus of Elasticity:

350 kg/mm2

Particleboard
1.

Plywood shall be plain sliced, slip-matched, Red Oak or rotary cut White
Maple, select Grade A-2, cross-banded, and with a veneer core. The 25 or
19 mm plywood shall be a minimum of 7-ply, 12 mm shall be a minimum of
5 ply, 6 mm shall be minimum of 3 ply, and 2.4 mm shall be 3-ply. Other
hardwood plywood shall be sound grade, a solid core and suitable for semiexposed or unexposed areas.

Hardboard
1.

Lumber shall be Red Oak or White Maple, grade FAS or better, air-dried and
kiln dried to 6% moisture content, then tempered to 7 to 8% prior to fabrication.
Lumber exposed to view shall be free of stains, splits, shakes, season checks
and other similar defects. Other hardwoods shall be grade FAS or better, air
dried to 6% moisture content, then tempered to 7 to 8% prior to fabrication.
Hardwoods shall be used in semi-exposed or unexposed areas and comply
with NHLA grading for FAS or better lumber.

Particleboard shall be industrial grade, with the following minimum properties:


a)

Density, 0.6 kg/m3.

b)

Minimum modulus of rupture, 1.5 kg/mm2.

Laminate Materials
1.

Laminate materials shall comply with NEMA LD-3; type, thickness, color,
pattern, and finish shall be as indicated for each application. Use exterior type
water-resistant glue for laminating plastics to wood substrates.

2.

Plastic laminate shall be in accordance with AWI Quality Standards Illustrated,


1 mm Post Forming quality, color, pattern, and gloss surface texture as
selected by the Royal Commission.

3.

Plastic laminate backing shall be at least 1.9 mm thick high pressure paper
base laminate without decorative finish. Color, pattern, and gloss surface
texture shall be as selected by the Royal Commission.

4.

Wood Veneer Laminate shall either one of the following:

Stainless steel shall comply with ASTM A666 Type 304, stainless steel, No. 4
satin finish, unless noted otherwise.

Steel tubes shall be as per ASTM A423.

Sheet steel shall be in conformation to ASTM A568, cold rolled, Class 1 finish,
stretcher leveled.

Polyurethane foam shall not contain any filler material and shall be molded or
slab, meeting the requirements specified in ASTM D3574. 5% tolerance shall
be allowed. The foam shall be flame retardant.

ABS compounds

A.

Material specifications as listed below are typical values used for general guidelines.
Specific dimensions, configuration, and material of furniture shall be approved by the
Royal Commission prior to fabrication.

Solid, molded ABS plastic, 5 mm thick x 660 mm w x 508 mm d. Top

Integral pencil grooves shall be located on each side of the top, allowing
pencils to rest below the top surface. Top shall be reinforced with steel
ribs below. Top shall be attached to the frame with tamper resistant
screws. Tablet color shall be from manufacturers standard colors.

The back frame shall be square tubular steel. The backrest shall be
properly shaped, neatly upholstered, and securely attached to the back
frames.

Arms

The seat shall be designed for maximum user comfort during extended
periods of sitting. The front edge of the seat shall be of a traditional
waterfall design, and the top seams shall be welted. Exposed parts of
the seat frame shall be set back from the edge of the seat cushion far
enough to prevent contact with external objects. The seat shall be
designed to protect the seat components. Polyurethane foam seat
cushions shall meet the requirements specified in par. 2.02 I.

The chair arms shall be of a traditional curvilinear design and shall be


fabricated from square tubular steel. The arms shall be securely welded
to the seat and back frames. Each arm shall be equipped with the
manufacturer's standard semi-hard molded plastic arm pad.

Fabrication Requirements
a)

Chairs shall be fabricated in accordance with the best commercial


practices. Finished chairs shall be clean, neat, well tailored, and free of
sharp edges, projections, or other hazards.

b)

Metal seams and joints shall be completely welded or brazed for


maximum strength at each joint. All parts shall be properly aligned, and
all welds shall be sound, without porosity, and smoothly finished.

c)

Bent tubes shall have smooth, even curves without flattening, crushing,
or crimping.

d)

The seat frame shall be constructed of minimum 0.91 mm steel. It may


be of the channel or tubular type seat frame with a set pan, or a
stamped type seat frame.

e)

The upholstery shall be properly tailored and free of wrinkles, rolls, sags,
or other defects in appearance. Seams shall be straight, double stitched,
and free of broken threads and loose ends. The upholstery shall be
attached to the chair in a manner that is free of hazards and designed to
prevent slippage and excessive wear. All raw edges shall be completely
concealed.

f)

Seat upholstery cover shall have a seam and welting along the top edge
of the side and back, which shall terminate at the bottom edge of each
front corner.

g)

The back frame shall be formed from 1 piece of minimum 0.91 mm steel
tubing, not less than 25 mm; or 1.21 mm steel tubing, not less than
23.8 mm.

2.04 IRONMONGERY

PART 3

EXECUTION

3.01 DIMENSIONS
A.

All dimensions given are approximate indications so that insignificant deviations due
to manufacturer specific program shall be possible.

B.

Any significant changes in dimensions shall be communicated to the Royal


Commission.

3.02 INSTALLATION
A.

The work includes supply and delivery to the site and the location, fitting and erection
of all items to the form and sizes shown on the Contract Drawings and described in
the specifications. The correct connection to all adjacent or adjoining building
components shall be as agreed with the Royal Commission and in accordance with
the approved drawings.

B.

Prior to all work of this Section, the Contractor shall carefully inspect the installed
work of all other trades and verify that all such work is complete to the point where
this work may properly commence.

3.03 CONNECTIONS TO BUILDING


A.

Connections to floors, ceilings, walls and other parts of the building, and also
connections between individual items, must be closely fitting and carefully carried
out.

B.

The fixing of all fitted components to the structure, and also to the jointing and corner
connections, must be carried out in a secure and workmanlike manner. This applies
both for fixed and removable fittings.

3.04 COMPLETION OF WORK


A.

The Contractor shall take full responsibility for the correct furnishing, fitting and layout
of the furniture as described in the specification, including the application of the initial
treatment (e.g., oiling, etc.) and for final cleaning. All packing materials shall be
removed from site.

B.

The Contractor shall bear sole responsibility for taking the necessary precautions,
with due consideration of the conditions prevailing on the building site, to ensure that
the work completed and handed over is free from damage and in perfect condition.

3.05 PROTECTION
A.
