1.05 DEFINITIONS

A.
accessory: A component which can, at the discretion of the user be readily added,
removed, or replaced and which when removed, will not prevent the fitting from
fulfilling its primary function.

all wood: All components in the piece are wood. May include some combination of
solid wood and engineered wood.

artificial laminate: A surface of plastic, foil or paper printed with a wood grain
pattern and bonded to a composite such as particleboard or medium density
fiberboard.

burl: A tree knot or protruding growth that shows up as a pattern in the grain when
sliced. Used for inlays and veneers.

engineered wood: Wood made from slices of lumber (plywood) or the chips and

hardwood: Wood derived from angiosperms (broad leafed trees such as oak, beech,
maple, mahogany, and walnut). The category consists of some woods that are
actually much softer than "softwoods."

hardwood frames: Frames which are made from hardwoods such as ash, oak, or
birch. These woods are usually kiln dried and resist splitting.

high pressure laminates: Synthetic sheet surfacings that are bonded to a core
material. Laminates offer heat, soil, and stain resistance. They can be grain and color
matched to surrounding woods for use in dresser or bureau tops, or produces in
decorative colors used to surface entire contemporary bedroom suites.

kiln dried: Kiln drying reduces the moisture content of the lumber, a process which
inhibits checking, splitting and strengthens the finished product.

These joints are often screwed, glued and doubled doweled for extra strength.

splat, etc.) into a furniture part. Since the wood grain is bent instead of cut, this
method yields exceptional strength.

veneer: A thin decorative layer of wood which is applied to underlying wood solids or
particleboard. Veneers are used to match and balance grain, create inlay and
banding effects.

vinyl wrap: Flexible vinyl wrapping applied to underlying wood solids or particleboard
to produce a surface that most often resembles wood. It is often used in less
expensive furniture applications.
1.06 SUBMITTALS
A.
The Contractor shall submit to the Royal Commission, under the provisions of
SECTION 01330, the following items for review and approval before commencing
Work:

The manufacturer shall provide the Royal Commission with test data
results and written certification that chairs furnished under this
Specification meet or exceed all applicable requirements of
ANSI/BIFMA X5.1 and this Specification. Such certification shall be in
accordance with the requirements of ANSI Z34.2, Self Certification by
producer or supplier.

The Contractor shall be responsible for the quality of work and shall develop and
propose programs and methods of construction and testing to achieve the specified
quality to the approval of the Royal Commission in accordance with SECTION 01450.

All furnishings and textiles used shall consist only of non-inflammable materials in

The Contractor shall be responsible for the quality of all its supplies items and as
such, shall develop and submit a Supplier Quality Inspection Plan for review. The
inspection plan shall cover those items intended for shop inspection and the
procedures for carrying out same.

1.11 WARRANTY

The Contractor shall deliver, handle and store equipment and material units in
accordance with SECTIONS 01650 and 01660, as well as the following
requirements:

In the event of damage to the installed furniture or to the finished work and
material of all other trades, the Contractor shall make all repairs and
replacements necessary at no additional cost to the Royal Commission.

PART 2
PRODUCTS
2.01 GENERAL
A.
All goods and products covered by these Specifications shall be procured, when
available, from an in-Kingdom manufacturer. Procurement of all goods and products
manufactured out-of-Kingdom must be approved by the Royal Commission.
2.02 MATERIALS
A.
General
1.
The forms, colors and design of all furniture and furnishings are to be
professionally coordinated and are to be correlated for each and within each
room type. All furniture and furnishing elements must be reviewed by the Royal
Commission prior to execution of the works.

All paints, stains, coatings, glues, etc., are to be performed in accordance with
the manufacturers instructions and recommendations for the relevant
situation.

All steel, aluminum, melamine veneered and plastic formed materials are to
fulfill the following requirements:

Non-glare, resistant to chemical cleaners, stains of fingers, ink, ballpens, pencils, etc. resistant to cigarette burns, scratchproof, and easily
cleanable.

All visible and finished surfaces are to be perfectly color synchronous and free
from stains, damages, and other faults, resistant to light, heat and humidity,
and to have uniform surfaces.

Types and colors of all upholstery fabrics are to be subject to review by the
Royal Commission.

All chromium plate shall be of the highest quality with no porous spots.
10.
Any timber parts shall be appropriately treated against blue stain, fungus and
insects.

Plywood shall be plain sliced, slip-matched, Red Oak or rotary cut White
Maple, select Grade A-2, cross-banded, and with a veneer core. The 25 or
19 mm plywood shall be a minimum of 7-ply, 12 mm shall be a minimum of
5 ply, 6 mm shall be minimum of 3 ply, and 2.4 mm shall be 3-ply. Other
hardwood plywood shall be sound grade, a solid core and suitable for semiexposed or unexposed areas.
Hardboard

Lumber shall be Red Oak or White Maple, grade FAS or better, air-dried and
kiln dried to 6% moisture content, then tempered to 7 to 8% prior to fabrication.
Lumber exposed to view shall be free of stains, splits, shakes, season checks
and other similar defects. Other hardwoods shall be grade FAS or better, air
dried to 6% moisture content, then tempered to 7 to 8% prior to fabrication.
Hardwoods shall be used in semi-exposed or unexposed areas and comply
with NHLA grading for FAS or better lumber.

Laminate Materials
1.
Laminate materials shall comply with NEMA LD-3; type, thickness, color,
pattern, and finish shall be as indicated for each application. Use exterior type
water-resistant glue for laminating plastics to wood substrates.

Plastic laminate backing shall be at least 1.9 mm thick high pressure paper
base laminate without decorative finish. Color, pattern, and gloss surface
texture shall be as selected by the Royal Commission.

Stainless steel shall comply with ASTM A666 Type 304, stainless steel, No. 4
satin finish, unless noted otherwise.
Sheet steel shall be in conformation to ASTM A568, cold rolled, Class 1 finish,
stretcher leveled.
Polyurethane foam shall not contain any filler material and shall be molded or
slab, meeting the requirements specified in ASTM D3574. 5% tolerance shall
be allowed. The foam shall be flame retardant.

The back frame shall be square tubular steel. The backrest shall be
properly shaped, neatly upholstered, and securely attached to the back
frames.

The seat shall be designed for maximum user comfort during extended
periods of sitting. The front edge of the seat shall be of a traditional
waterfall design, and the top seams shall be welted. Exposed parts of
the seat frame shall be set back from the edge of the seat cushion far
enough to prevent contact with external objects. The seat shall be
designed to protect the seat components. Polyurethane foam seat
cushions shall meet the requirements specified in par. 2.02 I.

attached to the chair in a manner that is free of hazards and designed to
prevent slippage and excessive wear. All raw edges shall be completely
concealed.

Seat upholstery cover shall have a seam and welting along the top edge

PART 3
EXECUTION
3.01 DIMENSIONS
A.
All dimensions given are approximate indications so that insignificant deviations due
to manufacturer specific program shall be possible.
B.
3.02 INSTALLATION
A.
The work includes supply and delivery to the site and the location, fitting and erection
of all items to the form and sizes shown on the Contract Drawings and described in
the specifications. The correct connection to all adjacent or adjoining building
components shall be as agreed with the Royal Commission and in accordance with
the approved drawings.
B.
Prior to all work of this Section, the Contractor shall carefully inspect the installed
work of all other trades and verify that all such work is complete to the point where
this work may properly commence.
Connections to floors, ceilings, walls and other parts of the building, and also
connections between individual items, must be closely fitting and carefully carried
out.
B.
The fixing of all fitted components to the structure, and also to the jointing and corner
connections, must be carried out in a secure and workmanlike manner. This applies
both for fixed and removable fittings.
The Contractor shall take full responsibility for the correct furnishing, fitting and layout
of the furniture as described in the specification, including the application of the initial
treatment (e.g., oiling, etc.) and for final cleaning. All packing materials shall be
removed from site.
B.
The Contractor shall bear sole responsibility for taking the necessary precautions,
with due consideration of the conditions prevailing on the building site, to ensure that
the work completed and handed over is free from damage and in perfect condition.
