RULES
DEFINING RELATIVE CLAUSE
*Relative clause tells us which person or thing, or what kind of a thing or person the
speaker means.
Eg.
1. This is the boy whose parents were killed in a car accident.

2. I live in Ahmedabad which is famous for its cotton textile industry.


*No comma should be put in a defining relaticve clause.
*We can use either that or which to introduce a defining relative clause about a thing,
animal or place.
Eg.
1. This is the book that / which was written by Jawaharlal Nehru.
2. This is the sportsman who / that holds the world record in swimming
*In a defining clause we can leave out who / which/ that when it is the object.
Eg.
1. We want a person [who] we can trust.
2. The house [which] he recommended had no electricity.
Non defining relative clause
*It adds extra information that is not essential.
* Comma comes before the relative clause.
*Comma comes after it if it comes in the middle of the sentence.
Eg.
1. I went to the market, which is nearby.
2. My mother, who is a good singer, is going to perform in the Town Hall today.
*We cannot use that instead of which at the beginning of a non-defining relative clause
Eg.
1. I live in North Street, which is near the station.
*We cannot leave out who / which.

Linking verbs
A linking verb links the subject with an adjective or noun or prepositional phrase or
