ELT Curriculum reform is necessary to

prepare students who are adaptable to
every situation through the emphasis of
lifelong learning.

Educating people through lifelong learning

activities is the essence for the advancement
of human capital. It means that through
lifelong learning, the students will be
prepared to have skills that a good employee
should have.

Every citizen should be given the right to get

education either formal or informal. Students
will be given the opportunity to learn other
skills apart from academic such as carpentry,
craft, sewing and many more.

Example is the learning of language arts

which helps the students to learn other
things apart from only academic things such
as learnt how to create creative products or
learnt how to prepare simple dish.

2. ELT Curriculum reform is necessary to

prepare
students
for
globalisation
through the introduction of Smart School.

There are various projects have been

introduced to ensure the effective use of ICT
in education. Competency in ICT is one of
the most important skills that are needed by
the students to face this globalisation era.

Eg: The Concept of Smart School pioneered

in 90 selected schools. Smart school is the
school which is equip with ICT technologies.
Nowdays, ICT application have become an
important part of teaching and learning. MSC
or Malaysias Multimedia Super Corridor is
the main supporter of the inception Smart
School in Malaysia.
4. ELT Curriculum reform is necessary to
prepare students to think critically by
increasing the number of HOT questions
in examinations.

With all the ICT facilities provided, it will

make the learning process easier as
students themselves can find notes and
exercises on their own. In order to be at par
with other students around the world and to
able to compete in the future, Malaysian
students should have a better knowledge on
ICT.
Ministry of Education attempts to train
students with critical thinking skills, creativity
and innovative thinking to meet the
increasingly competitive international
environment. In the area of assessment, the
Ministry plans to increase the number of test
question which assess higher order thinking
skills.
Furthermore, students motivation increases
when teachers asked them to answers
higher-order thinking questions. It will also
help them to solve problems at school and in
their life independently.

The reasons why MOE wanted to add HOT

questions in the examination is because we
want our teachers to teach using HOT
questions frequently in the classroom. This
questions help students to think critically and
improve their way of thinking.
5. ELT Curriculum reform is necessary to
prepare students who are independent
through Self Access Learning (SAL). It is
a system whereby the students are given

This type of learning will motivate the

students to learn independently in a fun way
where they can choose what activities that
want to do. By doing all that activity, they are

opportunities to learn on their own based on

their ability, using SAL materials provided by
each school. For example, in a few schools,
the English Language has already been
using this method to improve the standard of
the language among students (SAL room).

actually learning the language and thus

improve their proficiency. They can also fulfil
their leisure time during recess to do the
activities in the SAL room provided. This kind
of learning should be implemented and
actively conducted in all school.
