Important Notice on Product Safety

Elevated voltages are inevitably present at specific points in this electrical equipment. Some of the
parts may also have elevated operating temperatures.
Non-observance of these conditions and the safety instructions can result in personal injury or in property damage.
Therefore, only trained and qualified personnel may install and maintain the system.
The system complies with the standard EN 60950 / IEC 60950. All equipment connected has to comply
with the applicable safety standards.

1 Introduction
For operation of the core network (CN)/switching subsystem (SSS), the operation and
maintenance (O&M) personnel are faced with the following tasks:
order driven tasks
(determined by the administration by means of tasks)
system driven tasks
(triggered by the system by means of alarms)
Information and instructions for the operation and maintenance of the system are contained in the operating manuals (OMN), maintenance manuals (MMN), and the task
manual (TML). The contents of the manuals and the task manual are also available in
online form.
The Operator Guidelines (OGL) contain information that goes beyond operation and
maintenance, e.g. operation of input terminals, handling of system messages, etc.
Before using the OMN, MMN, and TML, the reader should have a basic knowledge of:
structure of the command language
the man-machine dialog
operation of the O&M terminal
use of the manuals.
This OGL manual provide this basic knowledge in the depth necessary to operate the
system. It is designed to help those responsible for O&M in starting their tasks.
The O&M personnel carries out all operation and maintenance tasks in the network from
one centralized location. Fig. 1.1 shows the relationships among the different types of
documentation for operation and maintenance of CN/SSS nodes.

2 OGL Structure
The OGL is able to provide information from two complex subject areas which are relevant to the O&M of the core network nodes whatever the operating task posed. These
two areas are:
presentation of the documentation necessary for operation, including how it is handled
communication with network nodes, taking into account the input/output language
and O&M terminals used.
The OGL consists of separate documents (registers):
OGL-IN
OGL-MN
OGL-ECD
OGL-MMI
OGL- CD-ROM.
Each manual has its own code number and can be ordered individually (this is for printed
documentation only).
The registers of the OGL can be found on the CD-ROM with the button for Documents
for General Information.
The following sections give an overview of the subjects dealt with in the individual registers.

2.1

Introduction (OGL-IN)
The register OGL-IN describes the structure of the OGL. It gives an overview of the subjects dealt with the individual registers.

2.2

Manuals for Operation and Maintenance (OGL-MN)

The register OGL-MN provides information on manuals and documents available to help
O&M personnel responsible for core network nodes in carrying out their work. These are
essentially:
operating manuals (OMN)
maintenance manuals (MMN)
task manuals (TML)

2.3

Exchange Configuration Documents (OGL-ECD)

The exchange configuration documents contain precise details on the layout of hardware equipment in a core network node. In register OGL-ECD the reader finds information on:
layout plan
layout list
equipment plan for distribution frame
survey list
equipment list for rack
cable laying list

2.4

Man-Machine Interface (OGL-MMI)

The register OGL-MMI emphasizes the handling of the man-machine interface. The
subject covers the following points:
structure of the MML commands
MML syntax
standard command actions
command input in the basic MML mode (BMML)
extended man-machine language (EMML)
output from within and outside man-machine dialog
output structure

2.5

O&M Manuals in CD-ROM form (OGL-CD-ROM)

The register OGL-CD-ROM provides instructions on installing the documentation on
CD-ROM under Microsoft Windows, and describes how to navigate the manuals and descriptions.
This manual can be found on the CD-ROM also with the button Help.
