Music Competition Jugend Musiziert

Diversifying mainstream classical music
Partners:
German Music Council (Deutscher Musikrat)
Funding Bodies:
Federal Minister for Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth, federal states and municipalities
Project Description:
Jugend musiziert is a highly prestigious and competitive youth music competition in Germany; it is the starting
point for practically all ongoing professional musicians. It takes place on a district, regional and national level.
For the last two years, the two Bundeslnder of Berlin and North Rhine-Westphalia have tentatively introduced a
new category, the Turkish baglama (a long-necked lute). This is seen as a measure to recognise the changing
demographic composition of the German population, especially in these two Bundeslnder. The development of
competition rules for the baglama in accordance with the general rules of Jugend musiziert proved to be a quite
complicated process. It required an intensive dialogue between experts from the German Music Council and
experts of Turkish classical music. The inclusion of the baglama was not just the acceptance of a new
instrumental subject, but also the inclusion of a totally different set of rules of playing music.
Lessons to be Learned:
The inclusion of an instrument played by members of an immigrant community in a "high culture" event like
Jugend musiziert is of very significant symbolic value, indicating a change in the mainstream culture and first
steps towards the acceptance of elements of immigrant cultures as an integral part of culture in Germany.
Target Groups:
Talented young musicians particularly from the Turkish community in Germany
