MECHANICAL VS.
CHEMICAL
Q: What's the difference between
mechanical engineers and civil
engineers?
A: Mechanical engineers build
weapons; civil engineers build
targets.

WAR BOARDER
A man in Amsterdam feels the
need to confess, so he goes to his
priest.
"Forgive me, Father, for I have
sinned. During WWII, I hid a
refugee in my attic."
"Well," answers the priest,
"that's not a sin."'
"But I made him agree to pay
me 20 guilders for every week he
stayed."
"I admit that wasn't good, but
you did it for a good cause."
"Oh, thank you, Father. That
eases my mind. I have one more
question."
"What is that, my son?"
"Do I have to tell him the war is
over?"

BRIDGE TO HAWAII
A man walking down the street
trips over an old oil lamp. As he
picks it up, a genie pops out and
says, "I will grant you one wish."

ROSHNI Issue No.84

The man says, "I want to live in

a mansion in Hawaii, but I'm afraid
of boats and planes, so I want
there to be a bridge from here to
there."
The genie sighs. "That's too
much work. Sorry, can't make it
happen."
The man says, "Fine, then I
want to understand women."
The genie replies, "Would you
like two lanes or four on that
bridge?"

LOTTERY
A wife comes in and yells,
"Honey, pack your clothes! I just
won the lottery."
Her husband yells back,
"Should I pack for the beach or for
the mountains?"
His wife replies, "I don't care!
Just get the hell out."

MOTHER-IN-LAW
A man's house is on fire. He
runs out of the house with his son
and tells him to wait outside. Then
he runs back in and gets his
daughter and brings her outside.

13

Then his wife. Then the dog. Then

he goes back in a couple of times
without bringing out anybody.
So a fireman asks him, "Why
are you going back in there?"
The man replies, "Just wan
mak sure about my mother-inlaw."

SMALL TOWN
JUSTICE
A police officer in a small town
stopped a motorist who was
speeding down Main Street. ''But
officer,'' the man said, ''I can
explain.''
''Just be quiet!!!'' snapped the
officer. ''Or I'm going to let you cool
off in jail until the chief gets back.''
''But officer, I just wanted to
say...''
''And I said KEEP QUIET! Now
you're going to jail!''
A few hours later, the officer
checked up on his prisoner and
said, ''Lucky for you the chief is at
his daughter's wedding. He'll be in
a great mood when he gets here.''
''Don't count on it,'' said the
prisoner. ''I'm the groom.'

A very subtle suggestion is given

here. That the seeker of truth should
talk, keeping same purpose in sight,
else he should remember AllaahSWT quietly. Time should never be
wasted over things which do not
benefit in the Hereafter. To earn a
lawful livelihood and to reform the
s o c i e t y, t h o u g h t e m p o r a l
engagements, vet do contribute to the
Hereafter. Hence these matters must
be discussed, but while doing so the
seeker should not be unmindful of
Allaah-SWT . An interesting fact is
that the destruction of such mighty
nations has not disrupted the cycle of
life in the least. Allaah-SWT creates
new generations and people. We
frequently witness this phenomenon
in our daily lives. So many people are
buried everyday and lost in oblivion,
yet life moves on towards its
destination where everything shall
one day come to an end.
The Makkans demanded that a
Book compiled in the heavens should
have been sent unto them. It was just
an excuse for rejection, otherwise to
accept the truth, the exemplary life
style of the Holy Prophet"-SW was
ample evidence. Had there been
sincerity in them and in their demand,
it could have been met: but they are
so unfortunate that even if their wish
was true and thev did see the Book

thoroughly to their satisfaction, they

would still have called it a magical
wonder. Their demand is not based
on the desire to seek guidance, but
only to render the Holy Prophet-SW
mute', as depicted by their other
demand of talking to an angel directly.
The latter demand is even more
absurd because a glimpse of an angel
or of the Hereafter is such a
conclusive evidence of the truth, that
any rejection thereafter would give no
respite to a non-believer, nor will his
repentance be accepted. Every
person experiences these visions on
the eve of death. The Quran makes
mention of the dialogues between
angels-AS and the non-believers at
that critical moment. When this stage
is reached, the doors of repentance
are closed. Just as for the Pharaoh,
when he repented before his
drowning, he was told: "Now! While
you had been amongst the rejecters.'*
If these non-believers see the
angels-AS, they too will be treated in a
similar manner and no respite will be
given to them to repent. And if they
turn the believers, there remains no
need for such a demand. One thing is
possible that an angel in human guise
is sent unto them: whence they shall
not be destroyed but still that angelAS cannot match the human
greatness of the Holy Prophet-SW .

He-SW will have his-SW own status.

So when these non-believers do not
accept what the Holy Prophet-SW
says, how can it be expected of them
to go along with what an angel-AS in
human guise will tell them?
The Holy Prophet-SW is being
comforted and told not to grieve over
their impudence, as the preceding
Prophets"-AS too had to face such
circumstances. Whenever the nonbelievers were defeated in argument,
they resorted to derision and enjoyed
vexing them by their words without
realizing the gravity of their
wickedness. As a result they were
seized by a foretold tormenting doom
that they used to laugh over and were
annihilated in disgrace. Now the nonbelievers contemporary to the Holy
Prophet-SW also have only one
option and that is either to believe in
and obey him-SW and live
honourably here and in the Hereafter,
falling this, they will be humiliated,
disgraced and uprootedn

Asrar At-Tanxil

The English Tafseer of Quran

By: Ameer Muhammad Akram Awan

Translation and Tafseer Surah Name: Al-An'am Meaning:The Cattle, Reveleaed at Makkah
Continued from Last month
The Aptitude of Qalb
nfidelity is a rust, which renders the
Qalb worthless. At a certain stage
of this denial, the heart loses the
ability to accept the truth. This is why
the disbeliever's attitude is of
indifference towards the Quran. Not
only this, but also whenever they
received Divine Commandments they
never obeyed any! Now they are
denying the Quran or the Holy
Prophet-SW
, although his-SW
noble life, his-SW family, his-SW
childhood, his-SW teenage and hisSW youth are all well known to them
as exemplary. Even before his-SW
Prophethood, he-SW lived
honourably and righteously in a
society plagued by evil. The
polytheists of Makkah called him-SW
Sadiq (the truthful) and Amin (the
trustworthy). A person who never
made a false statement about any
fellow being could, by no stretch of
imagination, lie about his-SW
Creator. The fact is that until the age
of forty years, the Holy Prophet-SW
had not been to any school or
monastery nor did he-SW become the
student of any priest or rabbi or
sorcerer. He-SW could not even write
his-SW own name. And then on
attaining the age of forty, he declared
that he had received Allaah-SWT s
Message: it not only excels in
guidance and wisdom, but is also a
unique piece of literature and
knowledge. If the non-believers
ascribe it to a human being, they may
assemble their eminent scholars,
poets and literary men including their
deities, to produce individually or
jointly a single phrase, which meets

ROSHNI Issue No.84

the standard of the Quran. Inspite of

all their efforts they could not, and will
never be able to do so. Yet they did not
accept the Message of Allaah-SWT .
Instead, in their desperation, they
started making fun of it. They were
soon engulfed by Allaah-SWT s
Wrath, as forewarned by the Quran.
T h e p o l y t h e i st s su s t a i n ed
humiliating defeats after defeat
culminating in the fall of Makkah to the
Muslims. The entire Arabia came
under Muslims suzerainty and an
Islamic State was established. The
Jews too were disgraced; some were
slain and others exiled from their
homes. The punishment of the
Hereafter is not too far away where
the penalty for disbelief is, of course.
Hell.
Even Sin Meets a Logical End
These people denying the truth
are traders by profession and
travelling is an important part of their

lives. Havent they seen the ruins of

disobedient nations gone by, to learn
a lesson from their fate and feel the
effects of their humiliating doom?
They must contemplate over the fact
that these nations, too, were once
alive and prosperous more powerful
and glorious than them. Their men
were taller, stronger and richer. Their
farms received generous rainfalls and
abundant water from rivers and
yielded golden crops. But every sin
has a logical end. When those nations
took to wrongdoings and did not give
up the path of sin, Allaah-SWT
destroyed them. Their fields were
scorched, the rivers dried up and their
homes were reduced to ashes,
without a trace of the dwellers.
Neither riches nor glorv could save
them from Divine Punishment. The
history of the People of Ad, Thamud
and of Madayn bear witness to it and
must be pondered over. The theme of
Quran is not history but the
reformation of people through
historical facts.

hat a difficult choice.

Trumper, my favourite
cricketer of all time? I've
seen film of him. From memory, he's
wearing a large broad-brimmed hat
and lashes a short ball over gully for
four.
Sobers, January 13, 1961 unbeaten on 152 - third match of the
tied Test series. I was eight. I reckon
this was my first day at a Test match. I
can still see him thrashing drives
through cover with those remarkably
loose limbs. That morning my father
told me we might see something very
special, and we did.
As a fan or journalist I've seen the
Chappells, Kim Hughes, David
Gower and the equally graceful Mark
Waugh, Allan Border, Brian Lara,
Steve Waugh, Sachin Tendulkar,
Javed Miandad. It's so hard to choose
that I'm going for one over of brilliant
batting I saw from close quarters.

ringside seat at second slip, with
Steve Rixon keeping and the NSW
captain, Rick McCosker, at first slip.
Lennie's first ball was
typically short. Viv ignored it
with typical disdain. Lennie
was not impressed and
gave him a mouthful. I
couldn't hear what was said
but I saw Viv's chest and
shoulders expand
alarmingly. He strolled a few
steps down the pitch and
casually patted a few spots.

more.
At this point McCosker sighed
knowingly and turned to me. "You
better go out to square leg, just behind
the umpire." In those days the SCG
wicket table was noticeably higher
than the outfield. I was at backward
square, about 30 metres from
Richards. But because of the slope, I
was looking up at those menacing
shoulders.
"Pitch it up, Lennie," I thought. "If
Viv hooks one towards me I'm going
to have to try to catch it. It's going to be
coming at 100mph and I could be in
for a broken hand. But I've got to try."
Lennie being Lennie, the fourth
ball was also short, but it went
nowhere near me. It smashed into the
midwicket pickets.
Fifth ball, Lennie pitched it up. Viv
still wasn't bothering to move his feet.
He just leaned into it and creamed it
on the rise through cover. A fourth
consecutive boundary.
The last ball of the over was on a
good length just outside off stump. Viv
hit it with tremendous power through
extra cover. Five imperious fours in a
row.
I watched Pascoe, head down,
take his hat and jumper from the
umpire and head to the safety of deep
fine leg. I never thought I'd see Len
Pascoe so resigned to his fate.
And then I looked back at Viv
Richards and wondered what it must
feel like to be good enough to decide
to destroy a Test bowler in the next
few deliveries - and to do it with such
authority.
I certainly wasn't playing club
cricket any moren

he skin is one of the first things people notice about

you. It is the largest organ in the body, accounting
for 16 percent of total body weight. The skin is a
barometer of overall health so weather you're glowing or
pale and uninteresting your skin says much about your
physical and emotional state. When you are ill or run
down, it shows up in pimples, dryness, eczema
(dermatitis), and premature aging. Dry skin may reflect
deficiencies of essential fatty acids (EFAs) and vitamin E;
sensitive skin is often due to poor digestion; pimply skin
usually indicates a diet high in fatty, processed food.
So what does all this mean? It means that you need to pay
close attention to what you put on your skin and especially
what you feed it.

he United Nations will mark its

70th anniversary when world
leaders assemble next month at
its headquarters in New York. Though
there will be plenty of fanfare, it will
inadequately reflect the UNs value, not
only as the most important political
innovation of the 20th century, but also
as the best bargain on the planet. But if
the UN is to continue to fulfill its unique
and vital global role in the 21st century, it
must be upgraded in three key ways.
Fortunately, there is plenty to
motivate world leaders to do what it
takes.
Two UN Secretaries-General have
overseen the Millennium Development
Goals (MDGs): Kofi Annan, who
introduced them in 2000, and Ban Kimoon, who, since succeeding Annan at
the start of 2007, has led vigorously and
effectively to achieve them.
The MDGs have engendered
impressive progress in poverty
reduction, public health, school
enroll ment, gender equal ity i n
education, and other areas. Since 1990
(the reference date for the targets), the
global rate of extreme poverty has been
reduced by well over half more than
fulfilling the agendas number one goal.
Inspired by the MDGs success, the

UNs member countries are set to adopt

the Sustainable Development Goals
(SDGs) which will aim to end extreme
poverty in all its forms everywhere,
narrow inequalities, and ensure
environmental sustainability by 2030
next month. This could help to bring
about a global agreement on climate
control, under the auspices of the UN
Framework Convention on Climate
Change, in Paris in December.
The precise value of the peace,
poverty reduction, and environmental
cooperation made possible by the UN is
incalculable. If we were to put it in
monetary terms, however, we might
estimate their value at trillions of dollars
per year at least a few percent of the
world economys annual GDP of $100
trillion.
Yet spending on all UN bodies and
activities from the Secretariat and the
Security Council to peacekeeping
operations, emergency responses to
epidemics, and humani tarian
operations for natural disasters,
famines, and refugees totaled
roughly $45 billion in 2013, roughly $6
per person on the planet. That is not just
a ba rg ai n; i t i s a si gni fi can t
underinvestment. Given the rapidly
growing need for global cooperation,

the UN simply cannot get by on its

current budget.
Given this, the first reform that I
would suggest is an increase in funding,
with high-income countries contributing
at least $40 per capita annually, upper
middle-income countries giving $8,
lower-middle-income countries $2, and
low-income countries $1. With these
contributions which amount to
roughly 0.01 percent of the groups
average per capita income the UN
would have about $75 billion annually
with which to strengthen the quality and
reach of vital programs, beginning with
those needed to achieve the SDGs.
Once the world is on a robust path to
achieve the SDGs, the need for, say,
peacekeeping and emergency-relief
operations should decline as conflicts
diminish in number and scale, and
natural disasters are better prevented
or anticipated.
This brings us to the second major
area of reform: Ensuring that the UN is
fit for the new age of sustainable
development.
The third major reform imperative is
the UNs governance, starting with the
Security Council, the composition of
which no longer reflects global
geopolitical realities. Indeed, the
Western Europe and Other Group
(WEOG) now accounts for three of the
five permanent members (France, the
United Kingdom, and the US). That
leaves only one permanent position for
the Eastern European Group (Russia),
one for the Asia-Pacific Group (China),
and none for Africa or LatinAmerican

apan has had a very difficult
past. Whitewash has not

yet distant. The third generation has
been facing a dilemma, which looks
unresolved between Japan and its

On 14 August, Prime Minister
Shinzo Abes expressed a mixed
remorse on the 70th anniversary of
end of World War II. He hoped that
the future generation would not offer
an apology. Critics say he played
down Japans war brutalities. He
declared: We must not let our
children, grandchildren, and even
further generations to come, who
have nothing to do with that war, be
predestined to apologise.
Next morning Japanese
conservatives, some wearing
imperial army uniforms, and some
Diet members gathered at the
famous (notorious for Chinese and
Koreans) Yasukuni Shrine in Tokyo
where A-Class war dead are
buried. Fearing severe reaction from
China and the two Koreas, Abe did
not go but he still participated. He
sent a ritual cash to show his own
commitment with the souls of dead.

They chanted patriotic songs.

They paid homage to dead to
revive their own spirit to defend
Japan. They asserted that Japan
had done no wrong.
Actually, they were the one who
were held responsible for
aggression 70 years ago. From the
Meiji era, it is said that more than
three million compatriots laid down
their lives for Japan. They were
soldiers and young Kamikaze

(suicide pilots).
The American anger resulted in
atomic bombings of Hiroshima and
Nagasaki that resulted in heavy toll,
making Japan the only nation to
have suffered a nuclear holocaust.
Emperor Hirohito announced the
surrender of Japan on 15 August
1945.
Emperor Akihito went ahead of
many steps to that of Abe. The
outside world has taken up his
apology more seriously than Abes.
The mood of Emperor Akihito
contrasted with Abe who took the full
responsibility of Japans aggression
and offered deep remorse for the
war, expressing hope that the war
ravages will never be repeated.
Together with all of our people, I
now pay my heartfelt tribute to all
those who lost their lives in the war,
both on the battlefields and
elsewhere, and pray for world peace
and for the continuing development
of our country, the Emperor said.
The Socialist Prime Minister
Tomiichi Murayama offered the most
heartfelt apology in 1995
commemorating the 50th
anniversary of end of war, which was
most welcomed by China and Korea,
the nations that suffered the most.
They closely watch Japans apology
events. The present Sino-Japanese
relations hinge on the mood of
apology. China, however, slammed

Abes apology. China was expecting

a sincere apology as was stated by
Chinese Foreign Ministry, adding
that Japan should have made a
clean break with the past of militarist
aggression, rather than being
evasive on this major issue of
principle.
Now the neighbours are no
longer weaker. Two of
them
possess nuclear arsenals. Many of
them challenge Japans economic
ascendency. Japan can deter threat
with the support of the United States
under a nuclear umbrella provided to
it. The Cold War security architecture
erected after Japans defeat has
been witnessing changes and the
world has to see how Japan fills that
vacuum.
Asian peace depends on Japans
mood and its relations with China.
Japan cannot undermine, ignore,
and remain indifferent to China.
They have to come to terms.
Bilateral dialogue must be resumed.
Chinas position in the South China
S ea s h ou l d be u nd er s to od .
Outsiders should not meddle to
escalate tension. Let the SinoJapanese rapprochement to work to
defuse the tension as did in the early
1970s.
Abe is in a dilemma. There is
internal and external pressure on
him to convert the Self Defense
Forces into an assertive posture. He
wants to reinterpret the Article IX of
the Pacifist Constitution that
demilitarised Japan. Article IX
explicitly declares that land, sea,

y Sheikh Shah Sharfuddin
Ahmed Shah, May Allah's
blessing upon him, used to
say a new Pakistan is bound to
emerge. And, I think a new Pakistan is
emerging. I see so many signs of a
new Pakistan. The state-sponsored
war on terror, owned by the entire
nation, is in full swing. On 14thAugust,
a suicide attack resulted in martyrdom
of Punjab Home Minister Lt. Col. (R)
Shuja Khanzada along with a more
than a dozen others. A few days later,
MQM leader Rashid Godil was
critically injured in a targeted firing
incident. This is the latest installment
of the price we're paying in the
ongoing war against terror. Much
heavier installments including
martyrdom of innocent children in
Army Public School in December last
year have already been paid. But
there's no doubt in public mind that
Pakistan is nearing a complete win in
the war on terrorism.
As I write these lines all TV
channels are flashing images of Air
Chief Marshal Sohail Aman, our chief
of air staff, himself leading the front
formation command of an airstrike
against terrorist hideouts. Wow! I love
it. And our Chief of Army Staff Gen.
Raheel Sharif has earned a big name
for him for encouraging troops
engaged in the war on terror by
celebrating Eid with them. So,
encouraging for the entire nation. I
love his heroic deeds, too!
Pakistan's dealings with the
outside world is also becoming more
principled and more rooted in its own
national agenda. Our insistence that
Mr. Sartaj Aziz would meet Kashmir
freedom fighters' leaders first before
his scheduled meeting with his Indian
counterpart has reportedly led to
cancellation of the talks by India.

ROSHNI Issue No.84

Here, again, a principle stand has not

been given up which, too, is a sign
that the new Pakistan is emerging.
Demand for a nation-wide crackdown
on corruption is getting louder and
louder. And our state institutions
cannot afford to ignore it for long.
Political issues are being handled
more adroitly than before. Politics is
being purged of criminals. At a
meeting of top military and political
leadership's on August 21, it has been
decided that the National Action Plan
drawn after the December 16 terrorist
attack on Army Public School would
be implemented in letter and spiritand our TV channels are still flashing
it as Breaking News as I write.
Rebalancing of power between
various organs of the state is going
on. Media is becoming more
responsible, bit by bit. And, devolution
of democracy is about to restart with
local bodies elections on the horizon.
But religious extremism is yet to
b e d e a l t w i t h d e c i s i v e l y,
accountability of those in the
government and in bureaucracy is still
elusive and public welfare still rests
on the bottom of the national agenda.
Women and youth empowerment and
meaningful health and education
reforms remain on low priority.
Economy will take years to shape
up but a will to improve economic
conditions is quite visible. And rights
of minorities, women and children are
getting some attention of our
policymakers.
As I make these observations, I
feel satisfied that Pakistan of our sons
and daughters is going to be better
than ours. Am I being too optimistic!
Perhaps so. But my Sheikh Ahmed
Shah was all but optimistic about
Pakistan.
That is perhaps why I'm
certain about a better, stronger, more
prosperous Pakistan as much as I'm

certain about my own self.

Hazrat, (as I lovingly called my
Sheikh) would often say to me, in
particular, and to a handful of his other
disciples, in general, that a new
Pakistan would emerge only after the
end of the Zardari era.
I think, the
process of the emergence of new
Pakistan has begun. Congratulations
to all Pakistanis!
We as Pakistanis
must understand now that in the new
Pakistan there is no room for armed
wings of political parties, there is no
room for poli tically-designed,
politically-supported corruption. But
at the same time, we also must
understand that in the new Pakistan
shall be democratic, regardless of
how power is shared between vital
organs of the state.
So, there isn't
and there shouldn't be any question of
the military might undermining
political forces. Keep this in mind and
you get an idea of how must it has
become for the MQM to behave and
how imperative it is for our beloved
armed forces to continue to remain
neutral in their anti-criminals drive in
Karachi.

Melinda A. Wormuth pleaded
guilty to two felony charges in U.S.

witnesses ranging from the town
attorney to state Sen. Kathy
Marchione, who were among
numerous unwitting political figures
who became players in the backdrop
of the FBI sting that snared Wormuth.

Wormuth also is expected to
