Class: XII __
Subject: History

Topic of the project Partition of India and its continuing legacy

Time Period April to September
Total periods allotted : - 20
The Topic Partition of India and its continuing legacy will help student of this generation understand
the tragic consequences of mixing religion with politics. It will deepen their understanding about the
circumstances in which the Partition of India and Pakistan happened. The understanding of this event
will make the student empathize with those who experienced it. Among the victims of this communal
frenzy, some of them lost all members of their families, others had to leave their palatial house, land and
property and move towards an unknown destination with no certainty that they would reach
somewhere without being killed on the way. The mass killing that happened in India has often been
compared with the killing of millions of Jews in Nazi Germany. The state itself in Germany was
involved in this gruesome mass murder of the innocents. In India however, it was not sure who
represented the State at in the year 1947 - British government who was about to finally leave India,
interim government under Jawahar Lal Nehru or Gandhi? All of them remained a mute spectator to this
macabre killing of millions. Gandhi did make a valiant effort to douse the communal hatred and himself
became the victim of this hatred. The communal hatred still persist and raises its ugly head time and
again. It is rightly said Those who do not learn from History, tend to repeat it.
