1 SCOPE OF SUPPLY
This specification describes the general requirements governing the design of 12-24 kV Metal
Enclosed Indoor Ring Main Units (RMU) and Compact Switch Gear (CSG) fully type tested
according to IEC 62271-200 standard.
The design of the switchgear shall be exclusive and specific responsibility of supplier and shall
comply with current good engineering practice, the relevant codes and recommendation, the project
specific requirements.
Any other codes recognized in the country of origin of equipment might be considered
provided that they fully comply with IEC standards.
The design of the switchgear shall be based on safety to personnel and equipment during operation
and maintenance, reliability of service, ease of maintenance, mechanical protection of equipment,
interchangeability of equipment and ready addition of future loads.
3 DESIGN CRITERIA
3.1 Service conditions
The switchgear and controlgear shall be suitable for continuous operation under the basic service
conditions indicated below. Installation shall be in normal indoor conditions in accordance with IEC
62271-1
Ambient temperature
Relative humidity
Altitude of installation

The RMU and CSG units shall be of the fully arc proof metal enclosed, free standing, floor mounting,

flush fronted type, consisting of modules assembled into one or more units. Each unit is made of a
cubicle sealed-for life with SF6 and contains all high voltage components sealed off from the
environment. If a system requires use of several units a separate extension of the busbar shall form
a system with a common busbar.
The overall design of the switchgear shall be such that front access only is required. It shall be possible
to erect the switchboard against a substation wall, with HV and LV cables being terminated and
accessible from the front.
The units shall be constructed from 2.5 mm thick stainless steel sheets. The design of the units shall
be such that no permanent or harmful distortion occurs either when being lifted by eyebolts or when
moved into position by rollers.
The cubicle has a pressure relief device. In the rare case of an internal arc, the high pressure caused
by the arc will release it, and the hot gases are allowed to be exhausted out at the bottom of the
cubicle. A controlled direction of flow of the hot gas is achieved.
The switchgear and controlgear should have the minimum degree of protection (in accordance with
IEC 60529)
- IP 67 for the tank with high voltage components
- IP 2X for the front covers of the mechanism
- IP 3X for the cable connection covers
The switchgear must have optional possibility to be extendable in either direction.
Module dimensions will be as follows;
Height : 1336 mm (max 1806 with low voltage compartment)
Width : 325/371 mm module/single module (696 for metering module)
Depth : 765 mm
Each unit shall be supplied with the operating handle.

Circuit breaker T-offs use vacuum bottles as interrupters of the currents. The circuit breaker main
circuit is connected in series with a three-position disconnector-earthing switch, which has no
interrupting capacity. The operation between circuit breaker and disconnector-earthing is interlocked.
It shall be a switch-disconnector and earthing switch using SF6 gas as an arc-quenching medium.
The switch positions are closed open earthed. In the open position the switch satisfies the
disconnector requirements.
6.3
Earthing Switch
The mechanism has a relay with related CTs and/or remote tripping device. The mechanism for the
disconnector-earthing switch provide independent manual operation for closing and opening of the
disconnector, independent closing of the earthing switch and dependent opening of the earthing
switch.
6.6
Electrical bushings
The bushing for the incoming modules shall be made according to the interface C. The bushings for
the transformer connection shall be made according to the interface A. The bushings are made of cast
resin with molded electrical conductor in the center. In addition, a screen is moulded into the bushing.
This screen acts as the main capacitor supplying the voltage indicators. The bushings are sealed by
O-rings and fixed to the cubicle by a common supporting bracket.
6.9
Position indicators
The position indicators are visible through the front cover and are directly linked to the operating shaft
of the switching devices.
6.12 INTERLOCKING
The mechanism for the cable switch shall provide a built in interlocking system to prevent operation
of the switch when the earthing switch is closed, and to prevent operation of the earthing switch when
the switch is in the closed position.
The mechanism for the T-off switch shall provide a built in interlocking system to prevent operation of
the switch when the earthing switch is closed, and to prevent operation of the earthing switch when
the switch is in the closed position. In addition an interlocking device allows access to the fuses only
when the earthing switch is in the earthed position and opening of the earthing switch is only possible
when the fuse cover is closed and secured.
The mechanism for the VCB and the disconnector-earthing switch shall have a built in interlocking
system to prevent operation of the disconnector-earthing switch when the VCB is in the closed
position.

TYPE TESTS
Units shall be type tested in accordance with IEC standards 62271-100, 62271-102, 62271-103,
62271-200, 62271-105, IEC 62271-1, and 60529. The following type tests have been performed and
available if required
- Short time and peak withstand current test
- Temperature rise tests
- Dielectric tests
- Test of apparatus i.e. circuit breaker and earthing switch
- Arc fault test
8 DOCUMENTATION
An instruction manual shall be provided with necessary information for receiving, handling, storage,
installation, operation and maintenance.
Routine test certificate shall follow each unit, and standard schematic drawings shall be delivered for
Ring Main Units. Compact Switchgear shall have drawings that consist of system single line drawings,
general arrangement and schematic drawings for order specific units.
TRAINING
Installation of the switchgear shall require no special tools. Optional product training shall be available
at the manufacturers facility.
