'A case of cannibalism in architecture' is what EM2N architect

Daniel Niggli calls his conversion of the Stadthof 11 in
Zurich-Oerlikon into a theatre for musicals. The new building
incorporated everything of the old theatre it could use, though
that was little more than the stage house and the cellar, and gave
it state-of-the-art technology. Faced with the large buildings of
its surroundings and the open space in between, the theatre
responds without copying their scale. Its highest corner juts
forward, opening up at the base like a shark's jaws. From this
corner, the dark casing of perforated sheet metal enveloping both
the outer walls and the roof, angles downward until, by the time
it gets to the back wall, it is down to the level of the
single-family homes there. Piercing the perforated sheet-metal
shell, a few large windows frame particular views into the
building. In the evening, light shines through the many small
openings in between, which are visible only in outline by day.

Freitag Flagship Store

Address
Geroldstrasse 17
CH-8005 Zurich
Switzerland
http://www.freitag.ch

Freitag started to make tarp-bags in 1993, inspired from a view

onto the transit-bridge. In 2006 they decided to sell
bags-made-from-tarps in a shop-made-from-containers.
Completely built from 17 rusty, recycled freight-containers,
selected in person in Hamburg and brought to Zurich by rail.
Stacked low enough not to violate the citys restriction on
high-rise, high enough to send shivers down anyones spine. The
way the elements are stacked is authentic, and only connecting
elements from the shipping industry are used. This also means
that dismantling the tower and leaving the site in its original
state will be a straightforward process. Freitags decision to
locate its flagship store here enriches the area, adding a new,
high profile building which is used by members of the public
during the day. The view from the roof of the Freitag shop onto
the transit-bridge is the same view that started the whole
shebang in 1993. For some its just noisy. For others its a source
of inspiration.

Aussersihl Community Centre

Address
Hohlstrasse 67
8004 Zurich
Switzerland

This project was won in competition in 1999. The site is a historic

memorial park, on the western side of the city centre - a
sensitive location. The architects decided to break with
convention for a community centre, and build vertically, rather
than horizontally. The initial proposal was for a six-storey,
angular tower nestling by some trees on the eastern side of the
site. After completing the design, the budget was slashed, and
the design team were sent back to the drawing board. The
revised scheme is still in the form of a tower, but only four
storeys, including a basement and kidney-shaped in plan. The
structure is formed of lime brick walls and concrete floor slabs. It
is clad in timber boards, stained dark green, to help the building
blend in with its surroundings. By contrast, the interiors are
painted in many different and bright colours. The ground floor
contains a caf, which is popular with the locals out enjoying the
park.

Branco Weiss Information Science

Laboratory
Address
Wolfgang-Pauli-Strasse 27
8093 Zurich
Switzerland
http://www.society-in-science.ethz.ch/

Within ETH Zurich this new building is simply called the 'HIT', but
its full name is the 'Branco Weiss Information Science Laboratory',
named after ETH Zurich alumnus Branco Weiss who supported the
building financially. The building, with its panoramic view of the
entire city, will certainly be filled with a lot of electronics by the
users, and yet it is not a high-tech building, as a symbol of the
information highway. The faade is a contributor to the
building's climatic properties; sensors respond to the weather
and the height of the sun. The depths of the balconies differ
depending on their compass direction, so they also act as
sunshades. Openings of various sizes from the small spatial units,
the entrance area and the two-story seminar rooms situated
along the outer walls lend the faade its own rhythm. //text from

MFO-Park
Address
Sophie-Taeuber-Strasse 6
8050 Zurich
Switzerland

The MFO-Park is a public square/public park located in the north

of Zurich. Its steel construction has exactly the same size as the
former industrial building situated in the place. The steel
structure was meant to get overgrown by various plants. In the
past years, the initially clean steel structure became more and
more covered by leaves. Within the process of getting overgrown
it became more and more popular to the inhabitants of the
quarter. The project is part of the transformation of Zurich-Nord,
forming an industrial area into an urban quarter. It shows one
way of how industrial areas can be transformed without losing the
characteristics totally.

La Galerie Du Vin
Address
Feldstrasse 62
8004 Zurich
Switzerland

"La Galerie Du Vin" is both a sales as well as a wine tasting and

seminar venue and aims to appeal to regular customers and
passers-by alike. The spatial layout and staging by OOS reflect the
store's values and traditions and let the wine bottles speak for
themselves.
The intent of the interior design is to present an
image of a landscape consisting of wine cases in which the
high-quality wines are presented together with their cases as in a
museum gallery. Some 1,500 unbranded wine cases from the
Bordeaux region cover the entire room up to the ceiling, creating
a cave-like environment. The wooden cases are simultaneously an
architectural element and a part of the furniture. Arranged in a
grid pattern they serve as a platform for about 570 wines, books,
seating areas and illuminated table display cabinets. The mostly
French wines are spatially divided into various geographical
regions and groupings, which conceal specific histories, cultures
and landscapes.
