Food Security
Food Security means that all people at all times have physical & economic
access to adequate amounts of nutritious, safe, and culturally appropriate
foods, which are produced in an environmentally sustainable and socially just
manner, and that people are able to make informed decisions about their
food choices. The kingdom of Netherlands strongly supports food security as
it has established many laws and policies, and had many conferences
regarding the issue.
Concerns over food security have existed throughout history and many
actions have previously been taken to prevent it but such an issue will not
disappear with one trial. This is why in the kingdom of Netherlands; we have
taken many previous actions not to stop the problem but to prevent it from
growing. Although not all actions taken towards the issue has been
successful but many others have had a huge impact on it.

The Netherlands believes that the most effective way to achieve this is
to invest in agricultural development. Agricultural development is a
driver for economic growth that can provide people with incomes,
productive employment and access to healthy and nutritious food.
Innovation will be the key to make agricultural development work all
around the world. The overall objective is to increase sustainability:
agriculture needs to be climate-smart and eco-efficient. The
Netherlands has vast (inter)national experience with market-based
innovations, combining the strength of the private sector, research
institutes and governments.
On 18/11/2014, the Dutch Minister for Foreign Trade & Development
Cooperation and the Minister for Agriculture sent their long-awaited
letter on global food security to parliament. The letter presents the
framework for the Dutch governments efforts to work on sustainable
agriculture and food security together with all its partners. It
indicates the direction in which new international initiatives by the
Netherlands will be developed over the coming years.
Food security is a priority theme of Dutch development cooperation
policy. The Netherlands focuses on: working towards an increase in
sustainably produced food and better access to nutritious food; making
markets more efficient by removing barriers to national, regional and

world trade; investing in a better business climate so that the private

sector can play an ever greater role in solving this problem and
contributing to worldwide research into agriculture, nutrition and
management of natural resources, both by means of funding and the
active participation of Dutch research institutions.
Despite all the effort put into trying to help solve the issue of starvation and
food security, there are still millions of people in this world dying of
malnutrition until this day; this indicates that this issue will always be there
regardless of how much attention it is provided but there is an extent to
which it can be moderated.
