TEXTBOOKS. The required textbooks are: Organic Chemistry, (8th Edition) by L.G. Wade Jr. (Prentice Hall, Englewood Cliffs, NJ
07632), and the corresponding Organic Chemistry Solutions Manual, 8th Edition, by J.W. Simek and L.G. Wade Jr. (Prentice Hall,
Englewood Cliffs, NJ 07632).

MOLECULAR MODELS. Molecular models facilitate visualization of molecules in three dimensions and are a valuable tool in
understanding stereochemistry. Students are allowed to use molecular models in the exams. Books and molecular models may be
purchased from the University of Pennsylvania Bookstore.

Exams and Grading

No makeups are given for semester exams, since one of the four is not counted.
Final grades are based on (1) the average of the best three normalized scores on your four semester exams, and (2) your normalized final exam
score. The better score, (1) or (2), will count as 60% of your final grade, and the other one as 40%. In addition, the grade scale will be adjusted
towards higher grades based on three factors: (1) high class attendance, (2) high exam attendance, and (3) high median class score relative to A
level. Thus there are (hopefully strong) incentives to attend, to encourage classmates to attend, and to help classmates to do well on exams. If
the class as a whole does better, then your chances of a higher grade are improved, too.

This is a win-win situation.
