HYDROTREATING
23 October 2015 | Kuala Lumpur | Malaysia
19 20
Due to the fact that environmental pressures are resulting in increasingly stringent limits on the sulphur content of refined
products while, simultaneously, crude oil quality may deteriorate in terms of sulphur content, hydrotreating is now an
essential and increasingly important component of refinery operations. Due to its capability in handling a wide variety of
feedstocks, hydrotreating finds utility in processing naphtha, kerosene, gas oil/diesel, vacuum gas oils, lube base oils,
waxes, cracked distillates and atmospheric and vacuum residues. There are several types of hydrotreating catalysts
available on the market and each possesses its own particular set of properties and operating requirements.
Consequently, this two-day course concentrates on the fundamental principles of hydrotreating; catalyst selection,
loading and conditioning; and unit operational practice. The course also examines the different types of hydrotreating
processes for the wide variety of potential feedstocks; key operational issues; and troubleshooting techniques.
Upon completion of this training course participants will be able to:
Gain an full understanding of the fundamentals of hydrotreating technology
Appreciate the role of hydrotreating in a modern refinery
Review recent developments in catalyst technology
Become familiar with hydrotreating operations
Examine appropriate troubleshooting techniques
Course Agenda in Summary
Environmental pressures on refined product specifications
Crude oil sulphur content trends
Hydrotreating theory and the hydrotreaters place in a modern refinery
Hydrotreating feedstocks and process unit types
Hydrotreating operational issues
Catalyst types, selection, loading, conditioning and monitoring
Catalyst regeneration and sulphiding
Troubleshooting techniques
Unit debottlenecking options
Who Should Attend
Refinery Process Plant Operators and Supervisors wishing to expand their knowledge and capabilities;
Refinery Process Engineers wishing to expand their knowledge and capabilities;
Refinery Process Design Engineers seeking an insight into hydrotreating operational practices; and
Non-process personnel interested in gaining a better understanding of
refinery

hydrotreating in a modern petroleum

Course Methodology
While the primary course methodology is via lecture, there are ample formal class exercises included within each of the
2 days to ensure that the benefit gained by attendees will be maximised. For this purpose attendees should ensure they
bring calculators to the course. Attendees are encouraged to ask questions and to seek the trainers advice on
hydrotreater problems currently being experienced in facilities with which they are or have been involved.

HYDROTREATING,

SULPHUR
RECOVERY
19 23 October 2015 | Kuala Lumpur | Malaysia
21
Due to environmental pressures the requirement to remove sulphur prior to the sale and consumption of hydrocarbon
fuels has been increasing relentlessly during the past three decades. Indeed, in recent years the rapidity of the reduction
in sulphur has accelerated to such an extent that in many countries some of the lighter hydrocarbon fuels are virtually
sulphur-free, levels of 10 ppm being common. The removal of sulphur from liquid hydrocarbons is almost exclusively
achieved by hydrotreating, where the sulphur in the hydrocarbon is converted to hydrogen sulphide (H2S) by reaction with
hydrogen over a metal oxide catalyst at high temperature and pressure. Removal of the H2S from the effluent gas is
generally facilitated by absorption in a lean amine solution. Subsequent heating of the rich amine liberates the H2S
which is then fed to a sulphur recovery unit where elemental sulphur is produced. Similar amine (and other) treating
processes are employed in associated and non-associated gas production facilities where there is a requirement to reduce
the sulphur content of the treated gas to acceptable marketable levels. This 3-day training course will review amine treating
and sulphur recovery theory and operational practice, and the various types of processes utilised. Key troubleshooting
techniques will also be examined and explained.
Upon completion of this training course participants will be able to:
Gain an appreciation of the fundamentals of amine treating and sulphur recovery technology and their role in the
upstream and downstream oil and gas sectors;

Develop an understanding of the importance of gas sweetening, acid gas removal and sulphur recovery in crude oil
refining and natural gas treatment facilities;

Become familiar with acid gas removal and sulphur recovery chemistry and analysis in relation to crude oil refining
and natural gas processing;

Understand the process criteria for the selection of amines for particular treating applications;

Become familiar with amine treating and sulphur recovery unit operations;

Examine various tail gas treating technologies;

Learn to utilise appropriate troubleshooting techniques.

Course Agenda in Summary

Amine treating and sulphur recovery technologies and their role in the petroleum industry
