Electrical Substation
Electric Power is generated in Power Stations and transmitted to various cities and towns.
Duringtransmissions, there are power (energy) loss and the whole subject of Transmission and
Distribution.
An electrical substation is a subsidiary station of an electricity generation, transmission
anddistribution system where voltage is transformed from high to low or the reverse
usingtransformers. Electric power may flow through several substations between generating
plant andconsumer, and may be changed in voltage in several steps.
The word substation comes from the days before the distribution system became a grid. The
firstsubstations were connected to only one power station where the generator was housed, and
weresubsidiaries of that power station.
~1~
Elements of a substation
Substations generally have switching, protection and control equipment and one or
moretransformers. In a large substation, circuit breakers are used to interrupt any short-circuits
oroverload currents that may occur on the network. Smaller distribution stations may use
reclosecircuit breakers or fuses for protection of distribution circuits. Substations do not usually
havegenerators, although a power plant may have a substation nearby. Other devices such as
powerfactor correction capacitors and voltage regulators may also be located at a substation.
Substations may be on the surface in fenced enclosures, underground, or located in
specialpurposebuildings. High-rise buildings may have several indoor substations. Indoor
substations areusually found in urban areas to reduce the noise from the transformers, for reasons
ofappearance, or to protect switchgear from extreme climate or pollution conditions.
Where a substation has a metallic fence, it must be properly grounded (UK: earthed) to
protectpeople from high voltages that may occur during a fault in the network. Earth faults at a
substationcan cause a ground potential rise. Currents flowing in the Earth's surface during a fault
can causemetal objects to have a significantly different voltage than the ground under a person's
feet; thistouch potential presents a hazard of electrocution.
Transmission substation:
A transmission substation connects two or more transmission lines. The simplest case is whereall
transmission lines have the same voltage. In such cases, the substation contains highvoltageswitches that allow lines to be connected or isolated for fault clearance or maintenance.
Atransmission station may have transformers to convert between two transmission voltages,
voltagecontrol devices such as capacitors, reactors or static VAr compensator and equipment
such asphase shifting transformers to control power flow between two adjacent power
systems.Transmission substations can range from simple to complex. A small "switching station"
may belittle more than a bus plus some circuit breakers. The largest transmission substations
cancover a large area (several acres/hectares) with multiple voltage levels, many circuitbreakers
and a large amount of protection and control equipment (voltage and currenttransformers, relays
and SCADA systems).
Distribution substation:
A distribution substation in Scarborough, Ontario, Canada disguised as a house, complete with
adriveway, front walk and a mown lawn and shrubs in the front yard. A warning notice can
beclearly seen on the "front door".
A distribution substation transfers power from the transmission system to the distribution
systemof an area. It is uneconomical to directly connect electricity consumers to the high-voltage
maintransmission network, unless they use large amounts of power, so the distribution station
reducesvoltage to a value suitable for local distribution.
The input for a distribution substation is typically at least two transmission or sub
transmissionlines. Input voltage may be, for example, 115 kV, or whatever is common in the
area. The output isa number of feeders. Distribution voltages are typically medium voltage,
between 2.4 and 33 kVdepending on the size of the area served and the practices of the local
utility.

ISOLATORS
~ 17 ~
Isolator or Isolating Switch is a device which is used to disconnect a part of the system
for maintenance purpose and repairs.Isolator can open a circuit under no load condition only.If
two isolators are connected on either sides of circuit breaker, then the circuit breaker must be
opened before opening the isolators.
After performingmaintenance work on the circuit breaker, isolators must be closed first
and then the circuit breaker must be closed to bring the system into operation.
INSULATORS
The insulator serves two purposes. They support the conductors (bus bar) and confine the
current to the conductors. The most common used material for the manufacture of insulator is
porcelain. There are several types of insulators (e.g. pin type, suspension type, post insulator etc.)
and their use in substation will depend upon the service requirement. For example, post insulator
is used for bus bars. A post insulator consists of a porcelain body, cast iron cap and flanged cast
iron base. The hole in the cap is threaded so that bus bars can be directly bolted to the cap.
~ 18 ~
of control such as is obtain by the use of the circuit breakers. A circuit breaker can make or break
a circuit either manually or automatically under all condition as no load, full load and short
circuit condition.
A circuit breaker essentially consists of fixed and moving contacts. These contacts can be
opened manually or by remote control whenever desired. When a fault occurs on any part of the
system, the trip coils of breaker get energized and the moving contacts are pulled apart by some
mechanism, thus opening the circuit.
When contacts of a circuit breaker are separated, an arc is struck; the current is thus able
to continue. The production of arcs are not only delays the current interruption, but is also
generates the heat. Therefore, the main problem is to distinguish the arc within the shortest
possible time so that it may not reach a dangerous value.
The general way of classification is on the basis of the medium used for arc extinction.
BUSBARS
~ 19 ~
up of copper rods operate at constant voltage. The following are the important bus bars
arrangements used at substations:
6.1 Single bus bar system
6.2 Single bus bar system with section alisation.
6.3 Duplicate bus bar system
In large stations it is important that break downs and maintenance should interfere as little as
possible with continuity of supply to achieve this, duplicate bus bar system is used. Such a
system consists of two bus bars, a main bus bar and a spare bus bar with the help of bus coupler,
which consist of the circuit breaker and isolator.
In substations, it is often desired to disconnect a part of the system for general maintenance and
repairs. An isolating switch or isolator accomplishes this. Isolator operates under no load
condition. It does not have any specified current breaking capacity or current making capacity. In
some cases isolators are used to breaking charging currents or transmission lines.
While opening a circuit, the circuit breaker is opened first then isolator while closing a circuit the
isolator is closed first, then circuit breakers. Isolators are necessary on supply side of circuit
breakers, in order to ensure isolation of the circuit breaker from live parts for the purpose of
maintenance.
A transfer isolator is used to transfer main supply from main bus to transfer bus by using bus
coupler (combination of a circuit breaker with two isolators), if repairing or maintenance of any
section is required.
LIGHTNING ARRESTERS
A lightning arrester (in Europe: surge arrester)
is a device used on electrical power systems
and telecommunications systems to protect the
insulation and conductors of the system from
the damaging effects of lightning. The typical
lightning arrester has a high-voltage terminal
and a ground terminal. When a lightning surge
(or switching surge, which is very similar)
travels along the power line to the arrester, the
current from the surge is diverted through the
arrestor, in most cases to earth.
If protection fails or is absent, lightning that
strikes the electrical system introduces
thousands of kilovolts that may damage the
transmission lines, and can also cause severe
damage to transformers and other electrical or
electronic devices. Lightning-produced extreme
voltage spikes in incoming power lines can
damage electrical home appliances.

Earthing Materials
Conductors:
Bare copper conductor is usually used for the substation earthing grid. The copper bars
themselves usually have a cross-sectional area of 95 square millimeters, and they are laid at a
shallow depthof 0.25-0.5m, in 3-7m squares. In addition to the buried potential earth grid, a
separate above ground earthing ring is usually provided, to which all metallic substation plant is
bonded.
Connections:
Connections to the grid and other earthing joints should not be soldered because the heat
generated during fault conditions could cause a soldered joint to fail. Joints are usually bolted,
and in this case, theface of the joints should be tinned.
Earthing Rods:
The earthing grid must be supplemented by earthing rods to assist in the dissipation of earth

faultcurrents and further reduce the overall substation earthing resistance. These rods are usually
made ofsolid copper, or copper clad steel.

APPLICATIONS:
The PLCC can be used for the following facilities:
Telephony
Teleprotection
Remote control or indication
Telemetry
Teleprinting
PRINCIPLE OF PLCC:
~ 26 ~
On the basis of blocking frequency bank, the wave trap can be following type:
ALL WAVE
SINGAL FREQUENCY
DOUBLE FREQUENCY
BROAD BAND
Coupling capacitor:
The modulated carrier is let into power line through coupling capacitor specially designed
to with stand line voltage under all-weather condition. The upper end of the coupling capacitor is
connected directly to the line and the lower end is connected to the ground through a carrier
frequency chock coil or drain coil. Thus coupling capacitor forms the link between the PLCC
equipment and power line. The coupling capacitor used in UPSEB is 2200pf capacitance.
The coupling capacitor are designed for outdoor use and hence to withstand normal
atmospheric phenomenon such as temperature & humidity changes, rain, snow, anticipated wind
load, nominal wire tension etc. at full rated voltage. In some case capacitive voltage transformers
(CVT) used as a source of line voltage for metering and protection as also used coupling
capacitor for PLCC.
Protective Device of Coarse Voltage Arrester:
This is connected across the primary of the coupling filter i.e. one end is connected to the
bottom of the coupling capacitor and other end is earthed. This is provided to protect the
coupling filter against line surges. An air gap is provided, where voltage of the order of 1.8 to
2KV as observed across due to lighting etc. on line.
Coupling of Filter:
The coupling filter is inserted between the low voltage terminal of the coupling capacitor
and the carrier frequency connection of the carrier terminal. Sometime an earth switch is also
provided with this unit. This unit mainly performs two functions; firstly it isolates the connection
of equipment from the power line. Secondly it serves to match characteristic impedance of the

RELAY
A differential relay is one that operates when vector difference of the two or
more electrical quantities exceeds a predetermined value. If this differential
quantity is equal or greater than the pickup value, the relay will operate and open
the circuit breaker to isolate the faulty section.

Relay
5. AUXILIARY RELAY:
An auxiliary relay is used to indicate the fault by glowing bulb alert the employee.
6. BUCHHOLZ RELAY:
In the field of electric power distribution and transmission, a Buchholz relay, also
called a gas relay or a sudden pressure relay, is a safety device mounted on some
oil-filled power transformers and reactors, equipped with an external overhead oil
reservoir called a conservator.
The Buchholz Relay is used as a protective device sensitive to the effects of
dielectric failure inside the equipment. The relay has two different detection
modes. On a slow accumulation of gas, due perhaps to slight overload, gas
produced by decomposition of insulating oil accumulates in the top of the relay and
forces the oil level down. A float switch in the relay is used to initiate an alarm
signal that also serves to detect slow oil leaks. If an arc forms, gas accumulation is
~ 33 ~
rapid, and oil flows rapidly into the conservator. This flow of oil operates a switch
attached to a vane located in the path of the moving oil. This switch normally will
operate a circuit breaker to isolate the apparatus before the fault causes additional
damage. Buchholz relays have a test port to allow the accumulated gas to be
withdrawn
for
~ 34 ~
testing.
7. IDMT RELAY:
The IDMT relay work on the induction principle, where an aluminum or copper
disc rotates between the poles of electromagnet and damping magnet. The fluxes
induce eddy current in the disc which interact and produce rotational torque. The
disc rotates to a point where it operates a pair of contact that breaks the circuit and
removes the fault condition.
SEMAPHORES
The indicator consists of an armature which
rotates between the poles of an electro magnet. The
indicator pointer which is black in color is fixed to
the armature and turns against a white background.
When the circuit breaker or isolator is in closed
position, the pointer bridges the gap between the lies
and provides continuity in the mimic diagram.
When the circuit breaker or isolator is in open position, it takes up a position which
is at right angles to the mimic. If the supply to the indicator fails, then it takes up
an intermediate position i.e. at 45O.
FREQUENCY METER
A frequency
counter is
an electronic
instrument,
Most frequency counters work by using a counter which accumulates the number
of events occurring within a specific period of time. After a preset period, the value
in the counter is transferred to a display and the counter is reset to zero. If the event
being measured repeats itself with sufficient stability and the frequency is
considerably lower than that of the clock oscillator being used, the resolution of the
measurement can be greatly improved by measuring the time required for an entire
number of cycles, rather than counting the number of entire cycles observed for a
pre-set duration. Theinternal oscillator which provides the time signals is called
the timebase, and must be calibrated very accurately.
CAPACITOR BANK
The load on the power system is varying being high during morning and evening
which increases the magnetization current. This result in the decreased power
factor. The low power factor is mainly due to the fact most of the power loads are
inductive and therefore take lagging currents. The low power factor is highly
undesirable as it causes increases in current, resulting in additional losses. So in
order to ensure most favorable conditions for a supply system from engineering
and economic stand point it is important to have power factor as close to unity as
possible. In order to improve the power factor come device taking leading power
should be connected in parallel with the load. One of the such device can be
capacitor bank.
~ 36 ~
PROTECTION OF SUBSTATION
Transformer protection:
Transformers are totally enclosed static devices and generally oil immersed. Therefore chances
of fault occurring on them are very easy rare, however the consequences of even a rare fault may
be very serious unless the transformer is quickly disconnected from the system. This provides
adequate automatic protection for transformers against possible faults.
~ 37 ~
Marshalling box:
It has two meter which indicate the temperature of the oil and winding of main tank. If
temperature of oil or winding exceeds than specified value, relay operates to sound an alarm. If
there is further increase in temperature then relay completes the trip circuit to open the circuit
breaker controlling the transformer.
Transformer cooling:
When the transformer is in operation heat is generated due to iron losses the removal of heat is
called cooling. There are several types of cooling methods, they are as follows:
1. Air natural cooling:
In a dry type of self-cooled transformers, the natural circulation of surrounding air is used for its
cooling. This type of cooling is satisfactory for low voltage small transformers.
2. Air blast cooling:
It is similar to that of dry type self-cooled transformers with two addition that continuous blast of
filtered cool air is forced through the core and winding for better cooling. A fan produces the
blast.
3.Oil natural cooling:
Medium and large rating have their winding and core immersed in oil, which act both as a
cooling medium and an insulating medium. The heat produce in the cores and winding is passed
to the oil becomes lighter and rises to the top and place is taken by cool oil from the bottom of
the cooling tank.
4. Oil blast cooling:
In this type of cooling, forced air is directed over cooling elements of transformers immersed in
oil.
5. Forced oil and forced air flow (OFB) cooling:
Oil is circulated from the top of the transformers tank to a cooling tank to a cooling plant. Oil is
then returned to the bottom of the tank.
6. Forced oil and water (OWF) cooling:
In this type of cooling oil flow with water cooling of the oil in external water heat exchanger
takes place. The water is circulated in cooling tubes in the heat exchanger.
