sequences that he had started work on in 1938: "The Neverending Rosary" and "Towards a Personal Armageddon". The
latter is a series of sonnets, clearly prompted by the ten sonnets
that ended Thomas's Twenty-jive Poems; and the sequence is a
good demonstration of the way in which pretentiousness leaves-----a writer blind to bathos. Nevertheless, Treece could write poems
that had a consistency of idiom and some rhythmic control and
delicacy; but he was a much more conventional writer than his
critical statements might suggest, and in The White Horseman
he appears as a delicate if whimsical poet of myth reminiscent of
the early Yeats:
The main faults of poetry like this are prettiness and cosiness.
Some of his poems have a chatty "in group" carelessness that
marlred the writing of the movement as a whole-the carelessness that goes along with self-importance.
Perhaps the most interesting thing about the Apocalypse
movement was that it was a provincial, non-london-OxfordCambridge movement (though G. S. Fraser had gone from
St Andrews to Cambridge, and represented Seven there).
