Oregon

Panthers focused on staying near the top

Jeremy Jones
Sports Editor

Although Oregon football has suffered

through some lean years in recent memory,
a year ago head coach Dan Kissling and the
Panthers returned to the WIAA playoffs for
the first time since 2009.
Returning 17 letterwinners to the gridiron this fall, including six starters on
defense and eight on offense, the Panthers
have some high expectations following a
4-2 (6-4 overall) Badger Conference campaign that earned the team second place a
year ago.
Despite posting a 12-34 record over the
last five seasons, Oregon finally has a large
and experienced senior class.
We have a good senior class of 23
seniors and many of those players saw significant playing time on either side of the
ball last year, Kissling said. Our depth
at all position is better and we are having a
solid camp and our team attitude is changing for the better.
The Panthers return four of five starters
up front on defense, but are still inexperienced on the O-line.
Oregon returns many of their skilled
positions to run a wing T offense, which
ranked up 1836 rushing yards, 828 passing yards and a combined 38 touchdowns,

while averaging 29.3 points per game.

Running back Matt Yates was a second
team all-conference back as a junior. Lucas
Mathews will also be a feature back and
Alex Duff is back at wide receiver, along
with Sam Mueller, while Charlie Soule
steps in at tight end.
Fellow senior Trent Ricker started all 10
games under center last year. His leadership and experience should help open up
the passing game, which looks to offset the
loss of Josh Sromovsky, who is now playing at Illinois State.
Besides quarterback duties, Ricker will
also double as the teams punter.
Oregon expects to be much better up
front as well with a pair of honorable mention all-conference lineman returning.
Junior Colton Rader returns following an
honorable mention campaign at tackle will
be bookended on the line along with Trevor
Cloud.
Inside honorable mention guard Logan
Hurda and Hunter Schultz will lead the way,
while Nate Govier or Garrett Johnson will
be asked to take over for honorable mention
center Zach Noventy.
Defensively, Kissling said the teams
strengths in its 3-3 defense will be athletic

ability and attitude.
Senior defensive lineman Jake Odegard (51) reacts after sacking Sauk Prairie quarterback Josh Holler

Turn to Panthers/Page 5 in the season opener Aug. 21. Odegard was a second-team all-conference lineman last year. He returns
seeking to help the Panthers back to the playoffs again this season.

they have not done so since

they host defending champion Monona Grove (5-1) in

Oregon follows that up
at Middletons Otto Breitenbach Stadium against
Madison Edgewood. While
the Crusaders (2-4) suffered

improved this season.
An Oct. 2 game at Stoughton (3-3) will be ripe with

schools, but has seen several
coaches switch allegiances.

First-year Vikings coach aims for playoff reprise

Senior Jake Kissling returns under center for the Vikings. Kissling passed for 738 yards and five touchdowns last season.

Stoughton returns as
much talent as any team in
the Badger South this year,
short of maybe perennial conference forerunner
Monona Grove.
The Vikings (3-6 overall, 3-3 Badger South) finished .500 in conference
last year, but more importantly ended a 15-year
playoff drought under
second year coach Jason
Thiry.
A year removed from
that success, brought a
new head coach and new
staff, though Stoughton
enters this season with
four offense players and
one defensive standout on
the WSN Senior Football
Awards preseason list.
First-year head coach
Dan Prahl, son of Oregon
Hall of Fame coach Bob
Prahl, hopes a core group
of nearly 20 letterwinners will help the Vikings

Kirby meanwhile, racked up
385 rushing yards, while also handling punting, kick and punt return
duties.
Senior quarterback Jake Kissling
and senior running back Jacob
Groleau were also tabbed as an
honorable mention quarterback following last season.
Kissling completed 44.4 percent of his passes for 738 touchdowns and five touchdowns in his
first year as a varsity starter under
center. Now back for his senior
season, the Vikings are hopeful
Kissling can improve upon those
numbers.
Little success can be found on
either side of the ball without solid
line play up front, an area where
the Vikings expect to find continued success.
Senior tackle Jeremiah Jimenez
(6-3, 250) and guard Rocky France
enter this season as preseason
picks for the Joe Thomas award
given annually to the states top
senior offensive lineman.
Besides Jiminez and France,
the Vikings also return a pair of
all-conference honorable mention
starters in senior tackle Key Cook,
center Brady Anderson up front.
Defensively, senior end Michael

Gerber enters the on the pre-season

Tim Krumbrie Award Watch List,
presented annual to the states top
senior defensive lineman. Gerber
and Jimenez lead a talented group,
which despite the loss of Ben
Brandt, should be the strength of
the Vikings defense.
Gerber had two sacks and one
forced fumble, while Jiminez had a
team-high six sacks.
While the Vikings return plenty
of talent they did loss a few key
players to graduation, including
two-way starter Alex Zacharias.
The 6-1, 220 pound Zacharias
earned second team all-conference
honors at running back and was
a unanimous first-team selection
at linebacker on his way to being
named Defensive Player of the
Year for the entire conference.
For an indication of just how
important Zacharias was last year,
one has to only look at the film
from Stoughtons win over Badger
South Conference rival
Oregon as the senior nearly single-handedly carried Stoughton
playoff contention, carrying the
ball 13 straight times for the goahead touchdown in a must win
game against Badger South rival
Oregon.

All-Conference players returning/

Outlook:
Edgewood enters the season looking to
rebound from a down year in 2014. With
11 players returning, the added experience should aid in that goal.
Helping their chances is the return of
second team All-Conference quarterback
Jack Dunn.
A true dual threat, the second year
starter led the team in passing with 1,356
yards and 15 touchdowns and was second
in running with 601 yards and 8 touchdowns.
Dunn has also been named to the Dave
Krieg award pre-season watch list, given to the states best senior quarterback
every year.
The Crusaders will have to find new
targets for Dunn to throw to, however,
after loosing first team All-Conference
wide receiver Bryce Haefer and honorable mention James Curliss.
Dunn is not alone on offense, however.

Young squad looks to grow up on the field

Verona hopes to contend for a
conference title
Anthony Iozzo
Assistant sports editor

The Verona Area High School football team had its nine-year playoff
streak snapped in 2013, but the Wildcats
bounced back and started a new streak
last season.
But with only two returning all-conference players and 24 players overall,
Verona needs to have players grow into
their roles early in the 2015 Big Eight
race.
In order to be at the top of the conference and/or secure five wins to make
the playoffs, the Wildcats will need to
replace several key positions. But the
good news is that several players that are
back have experience from last season
with seven starters back on offense and
six on defense.
We will be very young with only 21
seniors, head coach Dave Richardson
wrote in a preview questionnaire. Juniors
are going to have to mature quickly. We
have a motivated and passionate group.

Offense
The offense took the biggest loss of
skill players with first-team all-conference offensive lineman Dillon Villacrez,
first-team wide receiver Christian Baltes,
second-team quarterback Noah Roberts,
second-team running back Eric Schmid,
second-team tight end Jake Toman, honorable mention offensive lineman Sam
Strohl, honorable mention running back
Jackson Bryant and honorable mention
running back Cameron Tindall all graduating last season.
Junior quarterback Max Fink takes over
at quarterback without any experience
on varsity last season, but he will have
senior running back Carson Parks to hand
the ball off to.
Parks rushed for 298 yards and two
touchdowns on 30 carries last season.
Richardson said he will have a bigger

offensive line, while juniors Nick Garcia,
Austin Schwartz, Austin Hoover, Colin

Defense
The defense looks to be the strength of
the Wildcats in 2015. Seniors Trayvonn

Big Eight Conference

Parity in the Big Eight

Several teams at the top lose

talent, look to have new faces
contribute
Anthony Iozzo
Assistant sports editor

The 2015 race for a Big Eight Conference football champion might be the closest it has been in a while.
With top teams Middleton (8-1), Madison La Follette (7-2), Sun Prairie (7-2),
Verona (6-3) and Janesville Craig (6-3)
losing several key all-conference players from the 2014 season, Madison West
(5-4), Madison Memorial (3-6) and Janesville Parker (3-6) look to move up in the
standings. Madison East (1-8) and Beloit
Memorial (0-9) are also expected to
improve.
However, the teams at the top last season have a history of retooling their teams
with varsity-ready players, especially Sun
Prairie, Middleton and Verona which
joined the Big Eight in 2008. The three
teams have combined to win 14 Big 8
titles (with a few years as co-champions)
since 2004. The other teams to win conference titles during that stretch are Madison West (1), Madison Memorial (1),
Janesville Parker (1) and Madison La Follette (1).
This season will have loads of question
marks for teams early on with a lot of new
leaders around the conference, and there
isnt a clear-cut favorite among coaches.
Although most coaches picked either

With so much unknown, the Big Eight
looks to have lots of parity this season, Senior running back Cam Maly (32) looks to lead Middletons backfield in 2015. Maly finished with 1,143 yards and 19 touchdowns on 201 carries in 2014.

Outlook
The Lancers look to use
its experience on defense
to their advantage, but if
they expect to compete
at the top, the offense is
going to need some new
faces to step up.
There are only two
returners on offense
including Bernhagen and
the losses are huge. Gone
from last year are quarterback Jordan Carlson
(101-for-213, 1,446 yards,

offensive lineman Zach

Frankie Arriola looks to
take over at quarterback,
while Tim Hodges looks to
be next in line at running

Senior linebacker Alex Orvis (48) anchors a strong returning defensive core for Madison La Follette this season. Orvis had 47 solo tackles,
