No mentors. No teaching guides. No previous experiences to bring with me into the woods that day, ones
equal to the task of capturing the sense of tranquility
I imagined in my minds ear. No one had introduced
microphones and recorders capable of enduring the
extremes of weatherand yet still able to record the
subtleties of these sites. Protocols for taping whole
natural habitats, whether on land or under the sea,
were virtually unknown. Conceptual ways of perceiving
and expressing most aspects of field recording were
nonexistent, let alone the language for describing the
phenomena revealed through sound. And there was no
way of knowing, of course, the future revelation of the
importance of natural sounds, and our human links
to those miraculous voices. Humans had yet to realize
the numinous epiphanies that would clarify the associations between the sounds produced by non-human
organisms and our diverse cultures. In the late 1960s
world of discovery, there was nothing but future.
