Chemistry 2014-2015 Name: Date: Period: DC WATER EXPEDITION PROJECT Overview: We have spent all year discussing DC water and the chemistry related to water. To culminate our study we will be examining water from your homes and reviewing different water filters that could be used to clean your water. Steps to complete your project: Design your Project with your table and conduct background research Collect water from one of your group member's house ‘Test the water for the 8 parameters Analyze your results and compare to other classmates Decide what filter you will use for your water Filter your water and re-test the water for the 8 parameters Analyze your data (before and after filter) Write your Amazon review of your filter (multiple drafts, etc.) and publish Timeline: Learning Targets: Before Spring Break: Design your project/background research and collect your water (some classes will start testing) April 20-24: Test water for 8 parameters if it has not been done, Analyze Results by comparing to other classmates (all data needs to be entered into googledoc) April 27 - May 1: Choose your filter and run your water through the filter, re-test water and analyze results April 28" ~ Speaker from DC Water (bring your questions) May 5 - May 8: Write your Amazon review (multiple drafts) May 11-15; ALL AMAZON REVIEWS NEED TO BE PUBLISHED BY THIS WEEK (specific dates for each class will come later) can describe parameters measured in water in order to evaluate water quality. Ican design replicable research procedures that control for confounding variables. I can create a hypothesis using supporting evidence. I can organize data into an easy to read visual chart. I can explain the implications of data. I can identify and describe possible sources of error. I can evaluate whether the hypothesis was supported or contradicted using evidence. can create graphs that accurately display data. I can use data to support a claim about the quality of water. I can use appropriate spelling, grammar, mechanics and conventions. Name: Ms. McGillen Example. Period: ALL PERIODS Basic Outline of DC Water Project Part I: Project Design Instructions: Complete the basic outline of your project. Eventually this will be written more formally, but for now you can fill out this graphic organizer. 1, Who are your team members? Ms. Celestin, Ms. Cooper, Ms. Dunn ——/ 2. Who in your group will bring in water from their house? 1 will be bringing in water from my house in order to test. 3, Where do they live? (house, apartment, etc. and location in city) live in Mt, Pleasant in a house that is split into three apartments. 4. How will you collect your sample? Write out your procedures. Be sure to include how you will rinse the sample bottle, etc. 1 Obtain a collecting bottled from the teacher. a Take the collecting bottle home and rinse it three times with the tap water that will be collected. Fill the entire bottle with tap water (making sure there are no air bubbles). 4 Bring the sample back to school. 5 Test the sample for iron, water hardness, copper, chlorine, pH, nitrates and lead using the provided instructions 6 Clean-up the lab area and be sure that the waste is properly disposed of following teacher instructions. 7 Record all data and observations in a data table. 8 Analyze data and compare data to other collected data in the chemistry class. 5. Remember you will be testing for the following parameters: iron, water hardness, chlorine, Bacteria, pH, nitrates, copper, lead. DEFINE and RESEARCH how each parameter gets into water. IRON Iron is a naturally occurring element that makes up 5% of Earth’s crust. Iron gets into drinking through groundwater as a natural mineral and in pipes that provide drinking water. ‘When iron reacts with oxygen in the water treatment process the result is water that is discolored (reddish/brown color). Iron does not appear to have any negative health side effects, however, it can create an unpleasant taste and odor. In addition, excess iron can build up in the pipes and cause blockage and it may also make it harder to filter other contaminants. There is not an acceptable level for iron since it does not have any negative health effects.
