Coach Training Program Goals

Our goal with this 30-hour course is to allow you to learn and practice core coaching
skills that will support you in applying the KLC principles and competencies in your civic
leadership development work.

Upon completion of the three training modules you will know how to:

• Approach each coaching relationship with curiosity and an open mind,

building and leveraging trust in a powerful coaching relationship.

• Base each relationship on the assumption that the client is “creative,

resourceful, and whole,” and therefore fully capable of acts of leadership that
mobilize people to make progress on the hardest of problems.

• Help clients set goals, identify barriers and interference, and develop action
steps and accountability to enhance their life and leadership.
• Support clients in applying the KLC principles and competencies in their life
and work, including:
o designing meaningful leadership experiments,
o moving beyond their default approaches to situations that require
leadership,
o knowing and articulating their own values and the purpose of their
work.

Employment as a KLC Coach

Along with our intention to teach coaching skills that will be useful to you outside of
KLC, this training program is designed as professional development for individuals who
may be invited to serve as leadership coaches within KLC programs.

By the end of 2010, more than 140 individuals will have received coaching as part of
KLC programs. We expect that number to grow in coming years, creating a need to add
to our current pool of 15 KLC coaches.

If you wish to be considered for employment as a KLC coach, you must first
demonstrate basic understanding and ability to apply the ICF core competencies in a
coaching conversation. You must also demonstrate the ability and commitment to
integrate the KLC principles and competencies as the primary language and framework
for all KLC coaching engagements. Likewise, it is our expectation that all KLC coaches
will be sufficiently inspired to experiment with the KLC competencies in other aspects of
your work, and bring that learning to your coaching relationships.

Your suitability for the KLC coaching pool will be evaluated during Modules 2 and 3 of
the coach training, and with input from KLC staff and program faculty. If at any time you
wish additional feedback or information related to employment as a KLC coach, please
do not hesitate to request it.
