The academic year 2008-2009 has seen how The Jose Maria College forged ahead in a remark-
able manner. A glimpse into our long list of achievements shows that we have continued to provide
learning opportunities to the entire JMarian society.

A prime example of this is the national media tour that our Mass Communication students have
embarked on. They went for an educational trip; they observed, learned and gained new perspectives.

As the flagship course, the Mass Communication Program has always endeavored to surpass
classroom learning by providing students with a unique experience and by guiding them to put theories
into practice.

At JMC, our students are encouraged to expose themselves to gain first- hand experience by
closely working with professionals. As a center for information, we reinforce the principles of accuracy,
honesty, fairness, balance and integrity in communication.

We want them to approach stories with readers in mind, asking relevant and meaningful ques-
tions, critically assessing and reviewing information they get, and writing with clarity and credibility. We
also endeavor to integrate research into the education of undergraduates.

We believe that the curricular changes made would better prepare our students for future careers
in media industries.

In the past few months, our students have made significant contributions to the College and the
community at large, which took place in the form of practicum and internships. They were able to produce
a journalistic work of professional quality.

The activities and achievements in Advertising and Entrepreneurship courses in the past two
semesters showed a good display of the students’ ingenuity. These prepared them for effective manage-
ment problem-solving techniques and presentation capability; and gave them some early insights into the
management and ownership aspects of running a media operation.

For all the department’s remarkable feats, we laud the contributions and efforts of the faculty and
staff who always keep their plates full so they could impart knowledge and share experiences with the
students.

We are confident that the MassCom Department’s achievements are a strong indication that we
have ignited the hearts of our students as the future generation who will use their burning knowledge for
the good of the country and the world.

HOW FAR HAVE WE GONE?

I t was in 2000 when JMC founding President
Pastor Apollo C. Quiboloy decided to establish a four-
storey educational institution housing first class educa-
tional amenities.
After passing the qualifications and require-
ments set by the Department of Education (DepEd), this
U-shaped structure began its operation. Thus, The JOSE
MARIA ACADEMY paved its way to the educational
arena.
It first opened its preschool education program
until the second grade in the elementary level in June 17,
2002 with an estimated number of 150 pupils.
With the outpouring of blessings from the Al-
mighty Father, the Securities and Exchange Commission
(SEC) approved the move for conversion of the Acad-
emy, naming it THE JOSE MARIA COLLEGE.
In that same year, JMC earned the permit for a
college-degree operation granted by the Commission on
Higher Education (CHED) starting with AB Theology and
AB English for school year 2003-2004. With this, from
preschool, JMC went full blast as it offered complete
elementary and high school education.

Aiming for higher development, JMC earned
CHED’s approval to add more college courses, namely:
Bachelor of Secondary Education (BSEd) Major in Eng-
lish & Math, BS in Computer Science & AB Mass Com-
munication and to accept Hearing Impaired (HI) students.
By the school year 2005-2006, another five col-
legiate courses- BS Accountancy, BS Civil Engineering,
BS Information Technology, BS Psychology and first
two TESDA courses- Diploma in Computer Technician &
Diploma in Computer Science were added.
Another milestone achieved in 2005 was the
accreditation from the Bureau of Immigration, allowing
JMC to accept foreign students and to operate a 6-month
Caregiver Course.
In 2006, JMC earned another permit to open BS
in Commerce (B.S.C.) Major in Management Accounting.
It also received a government recognition for its elemen-
tary & secondary courses from the Department of Educa-
tion.
For a short span of time, The Jose Maria College
has raked in numerous awards both in the academic
and non-academic competitions, making it known not
only in the locality but in the national arena as well.
 Before 2008 ended, for the first time in history,
JMC was chosen by the Department of Education (De-
pEd) to host the 6th Student Technologists and Entre-
preneurs of the Philippines (STEP) National Competition.
STEP is a national event usually held in public schools,
but seeing the state-of-the-art facilities, JMC became the
perfect pick where it was attended by different compet-
ing schools from 17 regions around the archipelago.

Growing up in a remote baran-
gay of Datu Salumay, Marilog District,
Davao City, Aida works as a house-
maid and enrolling in the Alternative
Learning System (ALS) is the only way
for her to finish high school .
“Life in a remote barrio is so
hard especially for a large family with
a small piece of land to till,” Aida said
in an interview. “I want to finish college
and one day help my parents and be
able to send my siblings to school. But
I have not graduated from high school
yet.”
ALS is a government initiative
created to address the need of those
who want to gain access to for-
mal education.
Recently, President Gloria
Macapagal arroyo has ordered the De-
partment of Education to strengthen
ALS and reach out to more adults and
out-of school youths aged 16 and over
in all towns and cities in the country.
The program is open to all learners who
want to finish elementary or high school
and those who want to earn a college
degree.
“Since it was established in year
2001, it continues to help hundreds of
poor Filipinos in the Philippines,” Sec-
retary of Education Jesli Lapuz said.
In Davao City, the program
was piloted in Sta. Ana National High
School and a year later, it was extend-
ed to Daniel R. Aguinaldo National High
School. Based on ALS Davao City Divi-

thankful that there is a program that
gives the poor the chance to study and
be educated.”
Her ultimate goal, she
said, is to become a teacher. “I love

encourage more people to never lose

A new FM radio station
for students and staff at The Jose
1st ever Maria College was launched with
the tagline “In the Service of the
campus radio JMC Studentry.”
The radio station, called
in JMC history Royal FM, is the MassCom stu-
dents’ partial fulfillment of their
requirements in the course Mass
Media Management and Entre-
preneurship (MC 117). This aims
to give students an opportunity
to see the practical elements of
broadcasting and to work with peo-
ple who are professionals in their
field.
The Mass Communica-
tion Department of JMC believes
that this is a training ground for all
MassCom students that will give
them a distinct advantage should
they wish to pursue a radio ca-
reer.
They have a unique sta-
tion jingle based on its sub-tagline
“R-lang! which tells everyone to

The Jose Maria College (JMC) chess pride Rowelyn Joy Acedo beat the
two other four pointers during the 1st Filway-Diwa Under-16 Club Rating Chess
Tournament held at the Blue Knight Chess Club (BKCC).
Acedo defeated the player from the University of Mindanao John Den-
zel Amar and Alvin Acas who placed second and third, respectively. On the other
hand, Ademar Toleran of Sped Bangkal occupied the fourth spot with 3.5 points.
JMC was proclaimed champion and received a trophy courtesy of Fil-
way Marketing’s Hector Tagaysay and a medal from FA Ricky Navalta of Diwa
Learning System. The other placers also got medals.
The tournament was organized by BKCC director Ronnie Tabudlong in
coordination with the Davao City Sports Council, Inc. headed by Davao City Coun-
cilor Peter Laviña.
In another event, the chess pride of Jose Maria College along with Mary
Rose Sevilla made it again as they were proclaimed winners in the 2008 Mayor
Rodrigo R. Duterte-Vice Mayor Inday Sara Duterte Kadayawan Chess Festival
Age-Group Tournament last August 30-31 at the Holy Cross of Davao College
(HCDC).
Sevilla claimed the gold medal in the Girls Under 18.
Acedo, who was a silver medal performer for the Philippine team in the
Vietnam Age-Group tournament, bagged the gold in the Under 14, besting fellow
6.5 scorer Davao Central College’s Exiquila Apao via the tiebreak.
The achievements of Acedo and Sevilla in the world of chess only prove
that JMarians excel not only in their academic subjet but also have outstanding
skills in sports.

2008-2009. Optimum Link headed by Gretchen Belleza and Marla Joyce
Villasor, Creative Juices by Daniel Burlat and Arnel Brondial, and MYriAD
founded by Ellana Pancho, Patricia Saberon and this writer were launched
under the direction of Mr. Mark Narreto, the faculty adviser.
Each agency had to make a name in the market to attract clients
and sell fast. Its mission was to transact and do business with prospective

The first tasked of the three agencies was to look for a resort that is
not famous and not yet established in the city, and then promote it through

The challenge was not yet over for in the final week of the se-
mester, we were tasked to launch a weeklong advertising campaign. This
became an avenue for us to showcase all our multi-media promotional
materials. The event was formally opened at the JMC Media Center,
witnessed and judged by advertising entrepreneurs and experts.
Again, each student entrepreneur had to convince the judges
through a powerful presentation. Booths were also displayed at the school
lobby so spectators and the judges could go around and see for them-
selves the students’ artistic ability.

At the end of the semester, MYriAD Advertising Agency bagged Best Company Logo
the awards for Best in Radio Advocacy, Best TV Advertisement, Best award!
Company Profile, and Best Advertising Agency. On the other hand, Crea-
tive Juices received the Best Business Suit award, Best in Booth and Best
in Print Ad, while Optimum Link got the Best Company logo.
“It’s a job well-done”, the faculty advisor said. True enough, this made the

The Philippine’s first state- of-the art oceanarium. It
is the biggest marine park in Asia located at the back of the
Quirino Grandstand in Manila. Aside from being an ocean-

The park has a total capacity of 10, 000 visitors dai-

three million vulnerable young faces on April 25,
2009.

David Axel reigns as Mr. Little JMC 2008

Three-year old David Axel won the most cov-
eted title Mr. Little JMC 2008 outsmarting five other
kindergarten kids by his stunning intelligence and
quick wit. He earned four major awards, namely: Best
in Talent, Best in Formal Attire, Best in Costume and
Most Photogenic. With his favorite line, “A child today
a leader tomorrow”, David became everyone’s apple
of the eye.

David grows up under the care of the Children’s
Joy Foundation. At his young age, he has learned com-
passion and how to give love in return. With the CJF
President Pastor Apollo C. Quiboloy guiding him, David

poor and the needy.

Gift Giving
JMC, CJF reach out to the underserved kids

Reaching out to the less fortunate kids has al-

ways been the objective of The Jose Maria College. In partner-
ship with the Children’s Joy Foundation, an affiliate association
of the Sonshine Philippines Movement, hundreds of children ben-
efited from the school’s regular gift giving and feeding programs.

The kids were fetched by the school shuttle services from the
mountainous area of Tamayong and brought them to the JMC building.

Fun and games were specially prepared for them. The CJF
ambassadors shared food and spent time to laugh with the kids.

The steering committee, which was composed of different in-
ternal organizations and the Supreme Student Government, described
the event as immensely rewarding. The administration and the stu-
dents are always determined to extend their reach beyond the campus
grounds. With the support of other organizations, they vow to continue
to move further out into the neighborhood and bring joy and inspiration
especially to the most vulnerable members of society- the little ones.

employment orientation and Cum- Career Guidance 2009.

The lectures were presented by representatives from government agencies

who are prominent in their respective fields.

The first was Ms. Carolina Agdamad, Head of POEA Regional Center for Mind-
anao, who talked about self preparation for job recruitment, necessary documents,
and techniques to pass written examinations and interviews.

Ms. Loreile Arce, Labor and Employment officer II, presented on the right
values and ethics to achieve maximum productivity in the workplace, and Cecilia
Dayhon, DOLE Employment Division officer, shared the different functions of the
Department of Labor and Employment.

The speakers told students not to worry about the sizzling unemployment
issue. There are a lot of job opportunities out there, however, some are left unfilled
because graduates lack basic skills. The speakers disclosed that only 4 out of 10
applicants qualify for a job because experience and capability fall short of require-
ments. They said that in order to land a good paying position, graduates must have
the necessary knowledge and ability.

Winning the World

T he month of March was about to end.
What a relief! No more assignments, no more
books, no more pens, no more school pressures to
deal with. But as I stood at one corner of the college
building and walked alone, the solemn aura in eve-
ry turn hit me. Days were getting shorter and that
wonderful graduation music would one day fill every
space of the venue.
How great the feeling would be, when one
comes up the stage and receives his or her diploma.
How touching to see tears falling from our parents’
eyes who have sacrificed their lives just for us to
reach another significant milestone in our lives.
Graduation is indeed a wonderful time to give tribute
to those people we love and who love us in return.

March 30 came. Kneeling down for the in-
vestiture ceremony made us feel like another jour-
ney unfolded before our eyes. We were robed not
just with mere graduation gown but with the trust
that we should always be true Jmarians wherever
we go.
The much-awaited graduation rites began.
The graduating students from all courses were
called according to their respective degrees. After

boloy, conferred the degree upon us, we looked at
one other. Without saying a word , we knew what on
everyone’s mind. We’re now graduates! Yes, after
four years of hard work, it’s time to take a bow, a
bow to bravely run life’s race and to face a more
challenging journey.
Awardees reaped the fruits of their labour.
Everyone deserved an appreciation for making it
though! Thanksgiving echoed all throughout as
Leonie Cris Bajenting, who graduated Cum Laude,
expressed his gratitude for the founding president’s
love and kind-hearted support to all the academic
scholars. Then Pastor Apollo once again inspired
the graduates by his words of wisdom. It was a send
off message where every graduate could surely
draw strength and inspiration from.
The graduation song “Dream On” was sung.
How could the graduates forget the inspiring lines
“…so give your dream a try today. No matter what
people say. When this magical day is just a memory.
Begin to be what you will be someday…”
As many say, the diploma is just the first big
step and knowledge is the key to winning the world
and what you want in life.
Friendships? No, they are not over and will never be. I came
across this wonderful graduation poem written by a professional writer
and a prominent columnist Joanna Fuchs. She wrote:
We’re graduating, and we know
Our lives will be different and new;
We’re going out into the world,
Our goals and dreams to pursue.
But one thing will never, ever change,
As we go our separate ways;
The friends we’ve made in school will be

The special ties and attachments we’ve made,

So it’s not “goodbye,” but rather “farewell;”
