WPC 101 Course Syllabus

WELCOME TO THE W. P. CAREY SCHOOL OF BUSINESS!
WPC 101: Student Success in Business will provide a small, open environment for dialogue and discovery of
what it means to be a successful student in the W. P. Carey School of Business. In this course, you will explore
your own academic and career goals, participate in meaningful discussions, be exposed to new ideas and
people, and become familiar with W. P. Carey and ASU resources designed specifically for you. WPC 101 will
help you feel and be responsible for your own success as you transition from high school graduate to college
student and future business professional.

COURSE OBJECTIVES
During your semester in WPC 101: Student Success in Business, you will:

Hear the mission and history of ASU as the New American University and learn how the W. P. Carey
School of Business fits into that mission.

Connect with resources at ASU and in W. P. Carey that can help you succeed academically,
professionally, and personally.

Explore the variety of business majors in the W. P. Carey School of Business and the career
opportunities associated with those majors.

Investigate study-abroad and service-learning opportunities at ASU and in W. P. Carey.

Get involved with student-run clubs and organizations in W. P. Carey and grow as a leader.

Develop a cover letter and rsum and learn how to apply for internships and employment.

Practice professional etiquette and networking skills necessary for the business world.

For each hour you spend in the classroom, you should expect to spend about 2-3 hours outside of class
studying. Studying means more than just doing homework. You will need to review your own notes,

LATE SUBMISSIONS
Projects are due at the beginning of class, per the deadlines listed on the class calendar (page 6). Assignments
submitted late will only be able to earn half (50%) of the full point value. If you cannot submit a project on
time, contact the facilitator at least three days before it is due to schedule when and how you will turn in your
project. All assigned projects MUST be submitted by the last day of class to count toward your final score in
WPC 101. No exceptions will be permitted.

COURSE ATTENDANCE & PARTICIPATION POLICY

Much of what you will learn in WPC 101 takes place in the classroom through small- and large- group activities
and interaction. Therefore, you are expected to attend and participate in ALL scheduled class sessions.
Attendance equates to arriving on time and staying for the entire 50-minutes, completing and bringing in any
assigned homework, and fully participating in class activities and discussions. If you must miss class for any
reason, please inform the facilitator one week in advance.

Absences
You are allowed one (1) unexcused absence without an absence penalty. Each absence after the first
will result in a -50 point unexcused absence penalty on your final WPC 101 course grade. Excused
absences will only be givenafter appropriate documentationfor illness requiring doctor-prescribed
absence from work/school, death of an immediate family member, or participation in a universitysponsored activity according to ACD 304-02 (athletics, band, clubs, etc.). The following will not be
considered excused: interviews for a job/club/organization, court dates, or family emergencies. Please
use your one (1) unexcused absence carefully, as unforeseen circumstances do occur.

Participation
Each day that class meets, you will have the opportunity to earn up to 10 participation points.
However, these are NOT free points. To earn the full point value you must arrive to class on time,
respect your facilitator and classmates, and speak up to answer and ask questions during class. If you
are absent, you are not in class and therefore not participating (no participation points). It may be
possible to make up some missed in-class activities and missed participation points, but these decisions
are left to the discretion of the facilitator.

FACULTY LECTURE SERIES

Over the course of the semester, you will learn more about the W. P. Carey School of Business from some of our
distinguished faculty. Presenters have been chosen from different departments and will speak on a variety of
business topics at the Tempe, West, and Polytechnic campuses. You will have the choice of selecting the
lectures you want to attend.
Entry to lectures held on the Tempe campus will require a ticket, which can be reserved for free online at
http://wpc101.eventbrite.com. Only 375 seats are available for any one lecture time. Any open or unclaimed
seats will be filled on a first-come, first-serve basis 10 minutes before the lecture is scheduled to begin.
You will be required to attend and write brief reactions to 3 Faculty Lectures during the semester.

To verify your attendance at each lecture, staff members will scan your ticket when you enter and swipe your
ASU SunCard (Student ID) when the lecture is over. After attending a lecture you will write a brief reaction to
the lecture content. You must attend AND- submit reactions to the lecture to earn points for the assignment;
no partial credit will be awarded for just attending the lecture.

ACADEMIC INTEGRITY
The W. P. Carey School takes academic integrity very seriously and expects students to produce and submit
original work in all their classes. Therefore, unless otherwise specified, you should complete assignments
independently. The ASU Student Academic Integrity Policy includes a description of student obligations and the

Academic dishonesty in any form will NOT be tolerated. All assignments will be checked through Blackboards
SafeAssignment tool, and suspected violations of academic integrity will be taken seriously. Students found to

another class or elsewhere constitutes academic dishonesty. If you wish to further develop ideas or a project

THOUGHTFULNESS AND CONSIDERATION FOR OTHERS

W. P. Carey undergraduate students will treat their peers, ASU staff, and faculty with respect and courtesy. Any
behavior that is unrelated to the learning activities taking place during class or a lecture is disruptive to both
the facilitator and your classmates. Electronic devicescell phones, calculators, music players, laptops,
tablets, etc.should be turned off/silenced and put away before a session begins and remain away until a
session is dismissed, unless otherwise instructed. Inattention due to technological distractions is highly
unprofessional and will NOT be tolerated. This is your warning.
Failure to abide by these guidelines may negatively impact your participation grade. Repeat offenders will be
seen as disruptive and asked to leave class or the lecture. You will be counted absent and earn no credit for
participation for any sessions from which you are asked to leave.

DISRUPTIVE, THREATENING, OR VIOLENT BEHAVIOR

Students, faculty, staff, and other individuals do not have an unqualified right of access to university grounds,
property, or services. Interfering with the peaceful conduct of university-related business or activities or
remaining on campus grounds after a request to leave may be considered a crime.
Disruptive behavior in any form ( see http://www.asu.edu/studentaffairs/safety/definitions.html ) will NOT be
tolerated and students are expected to be familiar with all relevant university policies. A disruptive student
may be withdrawn from a course with a mark of W or E when the students behavior disrupts the
educational process. Disruptive classroom behavior for this purpose is defined by the facilitator. For more

ACCOMMODATIONS FOR STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES

Qualified students with disabilities may be eligible to receive academic support services and accommodations.

IF THE FACILITATOR IS ABSENT
If the facilitator needs to cancel class for any reason, he/she will contact you via e-mail. If possible, the
facilitator will also try to get someone to post a sign. However, if you come to class and the facilitator has not
arrived by the time 15 minutes have elapsed (from when class is to start), please assume that class is
cancelled, and check e-mail frequently afterwards for further instructions.
