Fords Immersive Vehicle Environment (FiVE) Lab

FiVE Labs overall mission is to assess craftsmanship and quality. Fords Immersive
Vehicle Environment (FiVE) Lab, engineers and designers can walk around, look
inside and even sit in digital replicas of each vehicle and assess them from the
customers perspective.

FiVE Lab implemented the Oculus

Rift development kit, which is a
virtual reality headset that provides a
wide stereoscopic view of the virtual
world.
When members of the design team
put on the headset, they are
transported
into
a
full-vehicle
environment
that
can
be
manipulated to exhibit different
surroundings at different times of the
day.
The engineering and design teams
can use the headset technology to
improve visibility for a vehicle
occupant.

VIRTUAL TRIAGE KIOSKS

The Smart Consulting Service

has something in common
with this system, but in this
case by allowing the general
public to register themselves for
appointments in hospitals and
doctors' offices.
Arthur Kenzo's invention replaces the need for high numbers of triage nurses on
staff. This machine takes care of administration and, to an extent, diagnoses. A
patient can approach the cutting-edge clinical stand, scan his health card, place
his hands down on the sensored surface and be guided through the process of
admission.

A series of questions can

be answered easily by the
Smart Consulting Service
user through an intuitive
touchscreen
interface.
Most communication is
even carried out by the
video image of a medical
professional.
The
sophisticated machine can
asses your vital signs and
symptoms on its own as
well and deliver all of your
information to the doctor
who will see you.

MEDIATING MEDIUMS
A recent graduate of the Harvard Graduate School of Design, Greg Trans thesis
prize winning concept, Mediating Mediums, provides a thought-provoking
glimpse into the future functionality and application of augmented reality.
According to Greg, digital 3D is currently confused with the digital 2D
representation of 3D material like that of Pixar animations or computer models.
As he sees it, true digital 3D has potential to converge what is real and what is
imagined, expressed here as a graphical user interface that exists not only within,
but as architectural elements that provoke user interaction.

His exploration into techniques that engage and allow for an immersive
experience for architects to design with presents an interesting proposal for the
future of our profession. The technology, in its current state is largely unexploited
and employed as a standalone object, rather than a holistic experience and
progressive tool. See his video and proposal for an enlightening take on how we
can use this technology for the advancement of architecture.
