WEEKLY TOPIC ISSUE

Working at height
Safety Harness
Full Body Harness w/ Lanyard
Step 1: Hold harness by back D-ring. Shake harness
to allow all straps to fall in place.
Step 2: If chest, leg and/or waist straps are buckled,
release straps and unbuckle at this time.
Step 3: Slip straps over shoulders so D-ring is
located in middle of back between shoulder blades
Step 4: Pull leg strap between legs and connect to
opposite end. Repeat with second leg strap. If belted
harness, connect waist strap after leg straps.
Step 5: Connect chest strap and position in midchest
area. Tighten to keep shoulder straps taut.
Step 6: After all straps have been buckled, tighten all
buckles so that harness fits snug but allows full range
of movement. Pass excess strap through loop
keepers.

Oxy-Acetylene
Light, Adjust and Shut Down an OxyAcetylene Torch
First - before you attempt to light the torch follow
these checks:
-Make sure regulator pressure adjustment screws are
backed out!
-Make sure torch valves are closed!
-Stand away from front of regulator
-Separately and slowly open the oxygen and acetylene
cylinder valves
-Adjust regulator p/a screws to tip pressure settings
-Open/close torch valves separately and fine tune
pressure settings on regulators
-Depress cutting lever and adjust pressure if necessary
Lighting and adjusting the torch (with a
positive/equal pressure mixer):
-Separately purge both oxygen and fuel gas lines
-Open fuel gas valve 1/2 turn
-Ignite flame with striker
-Increase fuel gas flow until flame leaves end of tip
and no smoke is present
-Decrease until flame goes back to tip
-Open oxygen valve and adjust to neutral flame
-Depress oxygen lever and make necessary
adjustments
Shutting down the torch (with a positive/equal
pressure mixer

Welding job/Grinding
WELDING
1. PRE-Operation:
-Ensure task (e.g. Drawings, instructions, specifications etc.)
is clearly understood.
-Ensure the work area is clean and clear of grease, oil and any
other flammable materials.
-Keep the welding equipment, work area and gloves dry to
avoid electric shocks.
-Stand on rubber insulating matting during operation (where
supplied).
-Ensure the gloves, welding gun and work leads are in good
condition (i.e. no exposed wiring).
-Check that other work areas are protected from flash (e.g.
welding curtains).
-Ensure appropriate ventilation is in place prior to use as
welding of aluminium, zinc etc will release harmful fumes.
-Ensure appropriate PPE is worn.
-Identify ON/OFF switch and emergency stop button (if
applicable).
2. Operation:
-Keep hands clear of work piece and away from electrode and
ensure operator does not wrap electrode leads around
themselves
-Ensure power is turned off (from wall socket) before
inserting or removing electrodes from electrode
holder/handle.
-Ensure current is correctly set according to electrode
selection.
-Never leave the welder running unattended.
3. POST-Operation:
-Ensure sufficient time for materials to cool before handling.
-Switch off machine and fume extraction (if relevant).
-Hang up electrode holder and welding cables.
-Practice good housekeeping and ensure the area is clean and
tidy.
ANGLE GRINDER SAFETY CHECKS
-Ensure all other worker are clear of the immediate work
area.
-Keep fingers and hands & power cords clear of the grinding
disc.
Never make adjustments while the angle grinder is running.
-Do not switch off the angle grinder when it is under load,
except in an emergency.
Allow angle grinder to reach operating speed before applying
to work piece & increase load gradually.
-Do not lift or drag angle grinders by the cord.
-Keep flexible electrical cords clear of oil, grease, machines
and sources of heat.
-Be aware of flying sparks. -Hold grinder so that sparks fly
away from you, other people and flammable materials.
-Do not leave the angle grinder running & only use the
grinder when hand held.
-Do not touch the work piece immediately after grinding
operation as it may be extremely hot.

Lifting
FORKLIFT
1.Starts and Stops
-Never start to move your vehicle, in either
direction, until you have checked to see that
your path is clear.
-Avoid sudden starts. A vehicle going in sudden
motion might strike a fixed object or an
unsuspecting bystander.
-Avoid sudden stops. A quick stop is and easy
way to lose all or part of a load.
-Never step out of your truck until it has come to
a complete stop.
-When a fork - lift truck is not in use, the forks
must be fully lowered with the tips of the forks
touching the floor. The controls must be placed
in neutral, and the parking brake must be applied
to prevent movement.
2.Load Handling
-Know the rated capacity of your truck in terms
of load weight and load center distance. These
essential details are always shown on the
manufacturers name plate.
-Never load your truck beyond its rated
capacity.
-Never allow anyone to sit or stand the counter
weight in order to increase the lifting capacity of
your truck.
-Never attempt to lift damaged pallets or crates
if a hazard will be created as a result of their
faulty condition or position.
3.Travelling
-All traffic regulations must be observed,
including authorized speed limits.
-Other vehicles, traveling in the same direction,
must not be passed at intersections, blind spots,
or other dangerous locations.
CRANE OR HOISTING DEVICE
-A hoisting limit switch on a crane or hoisting
device must not be used as an operating control,
unless the crane is also equipped with a backup
limit switch.
-A load must not be lowered below a point
where less than 2 full wraps of wire rope remain
on the hoisting drum. If there is doubt
concerning the safety of a crane or hoisting
means, the operator must immediately stop the
crane, and report the condition creating the
doubt to the supervisor.
-In the event of power failure, the operator must
place all controllers in the off position.
-When an operator leaves a crane unattended he
or she must land any attached load, place the
controllers in the off position, and open the
main switch. Before closing a main switch the
operator must make sure all controllers are in the
off position. The main switch does not need
to be opened on a pendant-controlled crane if the
crane is left unattended for short periods.
-An operator must only respond to signals from
the employee directing the lift. Except for an
emergency stop signal, which must be obeyed
