The Invitations

When it comes to
announcing the big
day, couples make
it personal

orget about the days of basic white or

cream-colored wedding invitations.

Today brides are looking for

color, design, individuality and
something that pops. They want
invitations that say something
about the bride and groom,
about their wedding and about
what their special day will
be like.

A country barn wedding?

How about invitations that add
a little colorful country flair,
with golden sunflowers or bright
yellow and white daisies on the
invitations?

Perhaps its a wedding at

the shore. Why not go for an
invitation with a nautical theme,
such as anchors, starfish or twine
that looks like rope?

I think people want something fun and colorful, says

Laura
Korzon
of
Korzon
Illustrated in Lancaster, who
recently introduced her own line
of Paper Jane designs for wedding invitations and stationery.

A
garden
party-themed
wedding is a natural for pretty
floral invitations with a watercolor wash.

Korzons designs lend a fresh

element to invitations that might
ordinarily be a little staid and
overly formal. An artist who

studied illustration at Rhode

Island School of Design, Korzon
has worked as a designer and
illustrator for several years in
Lancaster.
She loves the old-fashioned
appeal of hand-designed cards,
adding her own playful look.
I started off doing some
invitations for friends and relatives, doing custom designs,
Korzon says. I still do that for

customers, but now I have a

line of designs that give people
different price options.
As Korzon explains, the three
options fit into different budgets and offer a more affordable
ready-to-go option. That option
includes a choice of different designs, like sunflowers, peonies,
roses and strawberries. All thats
needed is to add names, dates
and other information.

The other two options are more customized, such as one that is tailored to brides who
can choose a city template like Washington,
D.C., or Lancaster. They can also select from
other options like wildflowers or roses in
bloom. The third option is fully customized
with hand-done drawings and watercolors.
I did one recently of a farm setting with
a specific farm here in Lancaster County,
Korzon says.
She does all the artwork by hand before
finalizing the look on her computer. The personal touch is evident with printing by a small
Lititz printer, Miller Printing.
Customized designs and whimsical touches
are among the trends in wedding invitations.
Another is color, with invitations printed on
colored paper. Its important to make sure the
type can be read on darker papers.
Envelope liners are another hot trend, with
watercolor washes and floral designs.
Calligraphy is fun too, using the brides and
grooms initials as part of the design.
Monogrammed invitations add an elegant
look.
In contrast to floral designs, geometric styles
have a 1920s appeal, with triangles, squares
and other patterns for a jazzy look.
Then there are the very practical designs,
like maps that show you how to get to the
wedding or the menu for the big event.

The Dress

Want the perfect dress?

HERE ARE SOME TIPS FOR SUCCESS
All eyes are on the bride on
your wedding day, so make sure
you look your best by taking your
time to choose the perfect dress.
Finding your dream dress can
seem overwhelming there are
so many styles and options out
there. Where do you start? How
do you know youre picking the
right dress for you?
Relax, says Jasmine Grimm,
chief executive officer of Ruby
Inc., who teaches people how to
dress for their body type.
Every bride can find her
dream dress, she says.
First, Grimm says, a bride
should consider her body type
right now.
Not 10 pounds from now,
she says. Right now. So often
customers are buying clothing
for the image they hope to be,
which results in an exercise in
frustration. Whatever your body
type, accept it and then dress
accordingly.
Grimm suggests avoiding
dresses that wont work with your
natural silhouette.
You should feel pretty when
trying on dresses, especially for
such an important day, she says.
Brides should consider whats
important to them in a gown, says
Shari Kendall, owner of In White
LLC in Lancaster.
Is it comfort, formality, look,
the wow factor, current trend
and/or classic tradition? she
says. They are going to be
wearing their gown for six to 10
hours the day of their wedding
and looking at photos of
themselves for years to come.
Whatever is important to them
they need to own that and
remember it when trying on
gowns.
Price is also an important factor
in the decision, Grimm says.
Its heartbreaking to try on
gowns you cant afford, she
says. Decide ahead of time what
youre willing to spend and what
youre not, and work within
your budget.
When it comes to choosing a
style, Grimm suggests taking a
mental picture of how you want
yourself to be seen on your
wedding day.

Do you imagine yourself

glamorous, bohemian, classic,
Grecian, minimalistic? Decide who
you are and what makes you feel
comfortable in gowns and then
proceed, she says. Think about
the time of year youll be having
your wedding and where you
want to have it.
And, she says, be realistic.
Youre going to be wearing
this gown all day and its
important to feel great, she
advises. This means if youre
having a laid-back beach wedding
in 90-degree weather, its
probably ill-advised to don a fur
and a dress thick with crinoline.
If a bride has a mental
picture or even a magazine
picture with her, that can be a
great starting point, says Kendall.
When a bride gives us
pictures, it gives us an insight into
what her initial thoughts are for
her gown, she says. While many
of our brides go a totally different
way once they start trying on, it
gives them and us a good
starting point.
For the bride who has no idea
where to start, Kendall says its a
good idea to try on one of each
different style of gown.
After trying on the
different silhouettes ball gown,
A-line, mermaid, trumpet and
sheath then try different styles
within the silhouette that they
like beaded, simple, lace, etc.,
she says.
Grimm recommends an indecisive bride rally her closest
girlfriends or family members and
make a few days of it.
Slow down, try on a few, take
lunch and then enjoy the day,
she says. It doesnt have to be
excruciating. Some dresses will
make you feel beautiful, others
wont. Its OK to try on different
looks. You dont have to commit
to the first one you find.
And above all, have fun.
Enjoy the process, she says.
Enjoy that youre getting
married. Enjoy the fact that
people are supportive and there
to help you through this process.

The Flowers

Farm to table applies

to flowers, too
More brides using whats local and in season
for bouquets and more

WHEN IT COMES TO WEDDING FLOWERS, LOTS OF BRIDES ARE

THINKING FRESH, LOCAL AND IN SEASON.
If that sounds a little like picking
fresh produce from the market, youre
thinking along the right lines. In this
case, however, instead of being fresh
tomatoes and peaches in July, or fresh
apples in September, these are locally
grown blooms like lisianthus, hydrangea, roses, allium and calla lilies.
Brides are looking to buy fresh and
buy local, says Sue Ellen Hendricks
of Hendricks Flowers in Lititz. They
dont want flowers that are shipped
from South America or some other
place.
As Hendricks has noticed, flowers
shipped from far-off places tend to
arrive a bit wilted. And no bride
wants that.
Even more importantly, buying fresh
and local ties in with the Lancaster
County trend of farm to table. With a
bounty of fresh fruits and vegetables,
it only makes sense to buy whats here
in Lancaster for your table. Local farm
markets offer seasonal produce that
gives customers the ultimate in

14 I DO September 2015 January 2016

freshness, and helps to support the

local economy.
In the case of flowers, its more like
farm to table, bouquet, ceremony
and boutonnieres. At Hendricks, that
means flowers that are grown at their
own greenhouse. A few of the 7
0-some varieties include Gerbera
daisies, lilies, carnations, dusty miller
and sweet pea.
Next to our retail flower shop, we
have six greenhouses, where we grow
our own fresh flowers, says Hendricks, adding that the family- owned
business has been doing that since
1937 and is one of the only growers of
carnations in the United States.
The fresh, natural look is a hit with
many brides these days, adds Cheryl
Brill of Royers Flowers. In the past,
flower arrangements were very formal
and often in cascading shapes. These
days, Brill notices that flowers are
more of what she calls sophisticated
rustic.

That ties in with an overall trend in

weddings held at country-style barns
with a stylish setting.
Brides love seasonal flowers, and
that works perfectly if they want
peonies or lilacs in May and
sunflowers in August, says Brill.
Occasionally, a bride wants lily of
the valley or tulips in the middle of
winter, and the only way to do that
is to have them shipped in from a
warmer climate. That can get
expensive, too.
We have so many local options that
can give a similar appearance to some
flowers, says Brill. We always try
to work within the brides budget,
because sometimes the picture she
has from Pinterest wont work right
now because the flowers have to
be shipped from Holland or
somewhere else.
What they can do is to offer
suggestions, like roses, asters, daisies
and more to capture a similar look. In

a few cases where the bride has her

heart set on peonies in September,
they can sometimes find the
springtime blooms in Alaska,
where the seasons are later.
Bouquets are less structured, with
a freestyle feel, Brill says. Often they
are gathered with ribbon for a
fresh-picked look. Colors are often
soft, like pinks, rose, lavender and
violet. Sometimes they are more
bold and vibrant, like hot pink,
orange, yellow and red.

The Cake

GO NAKED
Stripped of icing, these
luscious confections flaunt
their imperfections

It seems that some brides and

grooms dare to go bare on their
wedding day.
Instead of perfectly frosted
or fondant wedding cakes, its
become trendy for wedding cakes
to be sans icing as in naked
wedding cakes.
The naked wedding cake
has been around for a few years
in other places. Its just starting to
gain a foothold here in Lancaster,
says Renee Hackman, owner of
Bella Manse in Millersville.
Hackman has been in the wedding cake business since 1995 and
has owned the Manor Avenue
shop for 15 years, when she set
up her licensed home cakery in a
beautiful 130-year-old Victorian
manor known as Bella Manse or
beautiful manor.
While she is still seeing mostly frosted cakes, she has noticed the trend toward naked
wedding cakes, mostly among
rustic, barn-style weddings.
I think what people love
about naked wedding cakes
is that they look and taste
luscious, says Hackman.

EMBRACING
IMPERFECTION
Without the icing to cover
the layers, naked cakes rely on
layers of moist, delicious cake
and fillings like fresh berries
with buttercream. They are
purposefully imperfect, and its
OK if the layers seem to slip a bit
or the filling is irregular. That is
the beauty of a naked cake.

Think of the layered strawberry shortcakes grandma made

or the homemade birthday cake
that ran out of frosting. A naked
cake is typically only frosted for
the filling or maybe on the top.
The sides are left bare, so you
can see whats there.
It might be strawberries,
blueberries,
blackberries,
raspberries or cherries. The filling might be vanilla cream or
chocolate ganache. The cake
might be delicate angel cake,
rich yellow cake, lemon cake or
chocolate fudge. Its not meant
to be perfect. Its meant to
be delicious.
Naked cakes are really not a
new idea. They have always been
around. Whats new are naked
wedding cakes, says Hackman.

KEEP IT SIMPLE
Some naked cakes have a
multitude of layers, but that can
be tricky. Since icing tends to act
like the glue that holds a cake
together, too many layers
without icing on the outside
means that the multilayered
naked cake is at higher risk
of sliding. Hackman often relies on plastic wrap to hold it
all together until it gets to its
destination. The wrap also helps
to keep the cake fresh, something
icing usually does.
Hackman recommends simple
naked cakes with just two or
three layers, to offer that homemade look, and to avoid disaster.
Fewer layers also make the cake
easier to transport. While naked

16 I DO September 2015 January 2016

cakes are meant to be imperfect, they are definitely meant to

stay intact.
Its easier to make a naked
cake, because you dont have to
have perfectly formed layers.
says Hackman. Youre going
for a rustic, homemade look and
for taste.
As she points out, some people
dont like all that sweet icing on
wedding cakes. Naked cakes
arent too sugary sweet. They
have a fresh appeal.
Another closely related trend
is the skin coat cake, with just
the thinnest coating of icing that
lets the cake shine through. Its effect is to look like that cake you
made as a kid when you ran out
of frosting. Theres icing, but just
a trace.

AU NATUREL
Naked and skincoat cakes
seem to fit in well with the
fresh and natural appeal of a
country wedding. They dont

look pretentious. They certainly

dont look too fancy.
They can be great fun
to decorate, with all sorts
of fresh, seasonal fruits and
berries. or even fresh flowers, says
Hackman.
While naked cakes are newer
here in Lancaster, they first hit
the scene in New York City
with the Milk Bar dessert shop.
Back in 2008, birthday cakes
without icing started to appear
at the poshest parties, some with
frosting in between layers of
rainbow cake. What was missing
was the frosting along the sides,
and before long naked cakes
became a trend for wedding cakes.
I dont make a lot them,
admits Hackman. But I am
getting more requests in recent months. Its something
different.

The Bridesmaids

Dare to be different

Dresses dont need to be alike for the wedding party to look its best

The bride may be

the star, but the
bridesmaids are her
supporting cast.
When it comes
to bridesmaids
fashion, there tend
to be two schools
of thought :

20 I DO September 2015 January 2016

THE BRIDESMAIDS MATCH:

They wear the same color, style and length of dress. They often wear
the same jewelry and shoes and carry the same bouquets.

THE BRIDESMAIDS DONT MATCH:

Dresses may be the same fabric, but different
colors that blend well together. They might not
even be the same length. The styles may be
similar, but vary in detailing. The maid of honor
might wear an entirely different dress.

You cant always

please everyone with
one dress, and choosing
dresses that blend can
be a nice solution,
says Bert.

PHOTOS BY BHLDN

It seems to me that it tends to be all or

nothing, says bridal designer Janell Bert of
Posh Bridal in Lancaster.
Bert opened her Lancaster shop several
years ago, catering to brides who want a oneof-a-kind wedding experience. A graduate of
Drexel Universitys fashion design program,
Bert set off to California for a job working
at Disneyland Tokyo. She ended up working
on fashionable Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills.
Bert become a nationally known bridal
gown designer, with gowns that have graced
inaugural balls, feature films, the New York
stage and more than 10,000 brides over the
years. Settling in Lancaster, she has made
her mark as a bridal designer and as a theater
costume designer.
To her, the wedding is indeed a stage and
not only does the bride need to shine, but
her bridesmaids need to carry the theme of
the wedding.
The traditional approach is for all the
bridesmaids to be dressed the same, says
Bert. But I am seeing more and more
bridesmaids who do not match.

WHY IT WORKS
Allowing flexibility in bridesmaid attire has
two advantages. First, it takes into account
the variables with the women in the party.
Some may be amply endowed, in which case
a strapless dress may not provide enough
support. Others may be heavy or perhaps tall
and thin. The same dress doesnt always look
good on everyone, nor does the same color.
The second advantage is that it can be difficult to find one dress that everyone likes.
With the high cost of dresses, most brides
want their bridesmaids to not only like their
dresses but perhaps even be able to wear
them again.

You cant always please everyone with

one dress, and choosing dresses that blend
can be a nice solution, says Bert.
That means that dresses have the same
feel, but might come in blending colors like
smoky grays and blues, or the violet and pink
shades of hydrangeas. While there is a trend
toward soft, muted colors, Bert is seeing
more bright hues. Vivid shades like reds and
golds are being predicted.

GO CONVERTIBLE
Another hot trend is the convertible dress.
As Bert points out, this is not a new concept.
Designer Donna Karan introduced soft flowy
dresses in the 1970s that could be wrapped
and arranged in different ways.
What is new is the idea of bridesmaids
wearing the same dress in different ways.
Some may wrap it as a halter; others may
create a strapless effect or one with sleeves.
They can adapt the dresses to fit their figures
and wear a dress that they truly love, and will
want to wear again.
At BHLDN, the bridal division of
Anthropologie, based in Philadelphia,
convertible dresses have become popular with bridesmaids, as well as brides and
mothers of the bride.
Our convertible maids dresses continue
to be among our most popular styles across
all categories, says Danielle Cloutier of
BHLDN.
As she points out, Whats so fantastic
about the convertibility trend is that one
dress will flatter multiple body types. Someone who prefers straps and extra coverage can
purchase the same exact dress as someone
who sees herself in a strapless option, while
still looking like a cohesive bridal party.

At BHLDN, there is also a trend toward

brides purchasing the Annabelle, Juliet and
Ginger convertible dresses in ivory. The bride
might wear the straps during her ceremony,
then change her look for the reception.
Convertible dresses offer individuality, figure-flattering options, and theyre just
plain fun to style, says Cloutier.
As Bert adds, allowing bridesmaids to
wear what they like means they wont end
up with a closest full of useless dresses,
like the hapless bridesmaid in the movie
27 Dresses.
By choosing one color and different
variations in style, the dresses highlight each
bridesmaid in her best light. They can wear
silhouettes that work for their specific shape.
Dresses can be long or short, depending
on whether bridesmaids want to show
off their legs.
Or having subtle variations in color, like
a range of lilac, violet, dusty lavender and
smoky purple, gives a multidimensional look
that allows bridesmaids to choose a color
that looks good with their skin tone and
hair coloring.
Some weddings are a little more
Bohemian, with more variation. Others are
more traditional. Its really up to the bride,
says Bert.

The theme:

PERFECT TIMING
Yes. It was Perfect Timing. Everything throughout our relationshipfrom the time we met, to the time
we spent getting to know each other during our long-distance relationship, to getting engagedhas
always felt like it was happening right at the perfect moment. We are also very family-oriented people.
So we combined these two things by displaying vintage clocks next to photos of our parents and
grandparents with the hands on the clocks set to each couples wedding anniversary date. Our guest books
were stretched canvases that a good family friend designed with a photo of a beautiful clock as well.

The biggest challenge:

My husband and I were living on opposite

ends of the state so trying to coordinate
wedding planning activities with when
we were going to be in the same town
was difficult. What made it much easier
was having an amazing event coordinator
like Stephanie Lambert at the Inn at Leola
Village. She helped make the planning
process a breeze.

The one thing you would

do differently:

The only thing we wish we would have

done differently was to have hired a
cinematographer. To be able to watch
video highlights of our wedding day for
years to come is something that we would
have always cherished. That is one of the
many reasons why we love our amazing

we will get to relive that day through

The advice:

I heard this bit of advice when

a good friend was planning
her own wedding and it really
stuck with me. Decide how you
want to enjoy your wedding
day while you are doing the
actual planning. Guests can tell
if a bride is truly enjoying the
whole day or if she is fretting
over one or two things that may
not have gone as perfectly as
she would have hoped. So try
to relax throughout the entire
process. You may get stressed
with invitations and seating
charts beforehand but do not
let that disrupt the day itself.
Enjoy the day and take a
moment during the ceremony
and reception to look out over
your guests and take it all in.
They are all there celebrating
and supporting your love and
your new marriage. Those are
the moments you will
remember forever.

The Reception

A grazing menu allows guests to

pick and choose or have it all
One of the nice
things is that it keeps
the flow. People can
gather in groups or sit
down together to eat.
Its a great way to
encourage mingling.
says Hemphill.

f planning a sit-down reception dinner

or figuring out how to move the buffet
line along at your wedding has you
grazing for other options, you might be
on to something.

Its called grazing.

As every couple knows, planning the

reception menu can be challenging. How do
you serve food that everyone will like? How
do you make sure everyone gets to eat in a
timely fashion? How do you find a way to
keep costs down and still give your guests a
fun feast they will enjoy.
With grazing, you get a meal that is
something like a cocktail party. Guests dont
feel stuck in their seats, waiting to be served
the sit-down dinner. They can mingle and

34 I DO September 2015 January 2016

meet everyone at the wedding, not just those

at their tables.
In contrast to a buffet, guests dont have
to wait at their tables until its their turn.
You dont have that ripple effect where table
No. 1 is ready for dessert when table No.
10 hasnt even started the salad. Everyone
gets to eat at the same time, and they get to
choose the foods they like.
We are seeing grazing menus that have
themed stations, which is always fun, says
Lori Hemphill of Plum Street Gourmet.
As catering director at Plum Street Gourmet, Hemphill puts together menu ideas that
satisfy both the guests and the bride and
groom. It can be hard to please everyone, she
says, but a grazing menu can come close.

With grazing stations, the food is set up

so that guests can wander about and enjoy
things like a sushi bar, a seafood station, a
meat-carving station, a salad bar, a baked
potato bar, appetizers, a make-your-own
pasta station or a comfort food station with
dishes like macaroni and cheese.
Meat eaters can head right for the carving
station to load up on roast pork or prime
rib, while vegetarians and vegans can stick
with the salad, vegetable and fruit selections.
Those who like it all can have it all.
One of the nice things is that it keeps the
flow. People can gather in groups or sit down
together to eat. Its a great way to encourage
mingling, says Hemphill.

Plum Street has set up

all sorts of food stations, like a
fajita station, where guests pick
and choose exactly what they
want on their fajitas. Internationalthemed stations are always fun, with
things like sushi, spring rolls, stir-fry and pasta. If the bride or
groom is from someplace like India or Peru, foods from those
countries can be set up as a food station.
Usually the seafood station gets the biggest crowd, says
Hemphill, adding that steamed shrimp, oysters, crab cakes,
scallops and other seafood tends to attract schools of guests.

Appetizers are always appealing for a grazing menu, with

tasty offerings like tomato pesto canaps, smoked salmon
blini, miniature barbecue sandwiches and bite-size quiches.
Vegetable crudits and crackers with gourmet cheeses are also easy
and tasty.
Picnic food is another way to go, says Hemphill, pointing
out that fried chicken, barbecue, potato salad, coleslaw and other
traditional picnic fare can be combined with things like roasted
salmon, beet salad, heirloom carrots, string bean appetizers and
fresh tomato and corn salad for a fancier picnic theme.
It works especially well with outdoor barn-style weddings.
Add a beer and wine bar, and you have everything covered for
your guests. They can eat as much or as little as they wish.
Robert Lindh, who has his own catering business in Lancaster
and Pittsburgh, recently catered the wedding reception for two
close friends who wanted a menu that would appeal to their
vegetarian and meat-eating guests. The result paired beautifully
prepared vegetable and fruit crudits with an abundance of
meats, cheeses, artisan breads and salads.
Those on gluten-free diets could avoid the breads, while
anyone with food allergies could stir clear of the nuts or seafood
selections. Some people came hungry, looking for a full meal.
Others just wanted to nibble.
They can do what they want and they get to mingle, he says
It made the event more personal and intimate.

The favors

Leave your
guests with a

TASTY
reminder of
your big day

When the weddings over, give your guests a little taste to take home
with edible favors.
Food favors are hotter than ever, experts say, and they make the perfect
ending to a memorable event.
Weddings are expensive, and with the downturn in the economy
people had curtailed giving favors, but now that the economy has picked
up, weve seen a drastic increase in brides who are giving favors, says
Tracy Artus, owner of Miesse Candies in Lancaster. Food favors are especially popular.
Artus says food favors allow brides and grooms to tap into their past.
Food tends to focus on a childhood memory for a lot of people,
she says.
A wedding is a huge life event and the bride-to-be wants to include
memories from her childhood as part of it.
She says its not unusual for Miesse to serve brides who are the third or
fourth generation in their family offering the candies at their wedding.

You Can rely On Us To Make

For many brides, food favors offer an opportunity

to go beyond something chintzy, says Stephanie
Samuel, owner of Sugar Whipped Bakery in Lancaster.
Brides want something original, something you
cant just go to a store and buy, she says. I think
its the Pinterest effect brides are seeing ideas on
Pinterest of things they can give as favors, and its also
popular with brides who want a homemade feel or
look to their favors. They want to get away from
run-of-the-mill favors.
Samuel says shes worked with many out-of-town
brides who are coming to Lancaster to get married
and want a wedding favor that represents the local
food scene. Her whoopie pies, which come in a variety
of flavors including smores, banana peanut butter
chocolate chip, salted caramel and pumpkin, are
perfect for that, she says.
And food favors allow brides and grooms to tap
into their family tree as well.
Food favors are a very personalized thing, she
says. I had a couple who were Italian and Irish and
wanted flavors that complemented that to honor
their background.
Along with whoopie pies, Samuel sells a lot of cake
pops as wedding favors, and Artus says Miesse offers
everything from a two- to four-piece box of candy to
Dr. Seuss pops circular pops covered in nonpareils
that come in any color imaginable.
No matter what a bride-to-be chooses for her
favors, food provides not only a wide range of options,
but also a wide range of prices.
We can meet any budget with a food favor, Artus
says. From 50 cents per person to the skys the limit,
any bride, groom, mother of the bride, mother-in-law
of the bride can walk in here and find something that
fits their budget.

Something
old,
something
new

SOMETHING old
Vintage is the fashion of the day, so, by all means,
borrow a veil that somebody in your family wore on her
big day, says event planner Lori Hemphill of The Perfect
Plan in Lancaster. A vintage hankie is very popular, too.
Or you could wear your grandmas favorite brooch, your
own christening bracelet, or the pearl necklace your dad
gave your mom.

SOMETHING new
Your something new is likely your wedding dress, Hemphill says. If youre recycling a family dress, perhaps your
new husband would spring for a new piece of jewelry. A
bracelet, a pair of earrings? Kate Middleton, lucky girl,
was gifted with a new pair of diamond earrings. But if
expensive jewelry is out of the question, even something
like a new lipstick or hairdo will do.

SOMETHING borrowed
Back to Kate Middleton, who had the ultimate borrowed
item when she married her prince: one of the queens
vintage diamond tiaras. But dont worry. This is a category where you dont have to spend any money and
still have some fun.

ANYTHING GOES WHEN IT COMES

TO THAT AGE-OLD RHYME

he complete rhyme calls for something old, something new,

something borrowed, something blue, and a silver sixpence
in her shoe, and every bride knows that if she values good
karma shed better comply.

What few brides know is where the rhyme came from and
what each item means. The last line should be a clue. The silver sixpence was
minted in Britain from 1551 to 1967, so credit the Brits for making brides add
something old, new, borrowed and blue and a sixpence, too, if shes a strict
traditionalist to the long to-do list preceding the wedding.
Together the items in the poem represent good luck, but each one symbolizes
something different. Something old stands for continuity with the brides family
and the past, while something new represents hopes for the brides new life.
Something borrowed is a reminder that the bride can depend on family and
friends, and blue symbolizes love and fidelity.
The silver sixpence is for financial security.
WRITTEN BY LIS KING

42 I DO September 2015 January 2016

You can go traditional, of course, like Rachel Laudermilch of Annville when she married Jeffrey Clark back in
May. She pinned her grandmothers brooch to her bridal
bouquet. Or you can think beyond the box. The wedding
of Rachel French of Lancaster is a year away, but she
already knows that one of her borrowed items will be
her mothers collection of cake toppers. It will be on display at the reception, says her mother, Rosemary French.
Message boards on bridal websites brim with unusual
borrowed things. One bride borrowed her BFFs dog as
a ring bearer. Another borrowed her brothers skateboard, but didnt tell us how she incorporated it into the
wedding. Did she skate to the altar?

SOMETHING blue
Adding something blue to the garter is a classic theme,
but you could be more visual about it, says Hemphill.
For example, you could choose blue shoes. They look
amazing with a white gown. For that matter, a pale blue
wedding gown would be right on trend. Or think about
using a blue guest book. Or use blue bags for party
favors for your guests.

SILVER sixpence
The silver sixpence can be replaced by a penny or a
dime, but sixpences can be purchased from companies
like Amazon and Darice. Custom has it that the coin
should be in the left shoe, but if the bride has tender
feet, she may want to drill a hole in the coin and tie it to
her bouquet.

Decorating to live happily ever after

Boy meets girl, again and again, till
they cant stay apart anymore. Fast
forward to a wonderful wedding,
and then they are there, in their
new home, where theyre supposed
to live happily ever after. But what
happens when she hates his dartboard and the recliner that used
to be his dads, and he loathes the
potpourri and scented candles she
adores? Or hes a strict minimalist,
while she dreams of lots of luxe?
Decorating a new home is never easy
in and of itself, acknowledges Lancaster
designer Henrietta Heisler. Now add the
challenge of blending two different styles
within one home, and the tension can reach

the heights of a ticking time bomb. I have

been witness to fierce and unnecessary
arguments about something as minute as
what color to paint the kitchen.
Here, the operative word is unnecessary. There are some guidelines that
could help newlyweds achieve a blissfully
blended home.
RESPECT AND COMPROMISE
Heisler feels that mutual respect is
all-important. If the newlyweds wind up
in yelling matches about what style dining
table to choose, what does that say about
the chances of happily ever after? she
asks. Shell trample his emotions if she
insists on getting rid of that well-loved
recliner. Ditto, her emotions will take a hit if
he objects stridently to her collection of vin-

cabinets. Lancaster designer Henrietta Heisler combined both in this kitchen.

tage movie posters. Id urge them to compromise and be imaginative. Perhaps that
recliner can be re-upholstered and given a
corner in the bedroom. And if beautifully
framed, perhaps those vintage posters could
be an asset to a hallway or the home office.
And be gentle about rejecting your
spouses belongings, she adds. Dont
bring up everything you hate all at once.
Do I sound like a psychologist? Well,
sometimes when dealing with married
couples, thats exactly what I feel like.
TOGETHERNESS WORKS
Often, newlyweds havent discussed such
items as furniture styles or colors prior to
the wedding, but now that theyre trying to
create a home, they should absolutely get
together and explore the possibilities.
Settle on the couch, says Heisler, and go
through home magazines and watch HGTV,
discuss friends homes and discover what
you like. While you might learn that he
prefers rustic decors and she likes clean
contemporary styles, youre likely to find
common ground as well. For example,
you might discover that you both like
honey-colored wood floors and sage green.
Well, thats something to build on.

Another point: Dont make major

purchases without your spouses approval.
In fact, shop together, and you could well
find out that you like similar pieces and that
theyre quite different from the ones you
liked when you were single.
You cant go wrong with classic
styles, Heisler says. Thats the way to go
when youre buying those larger items.
Theyre timely and timeless, and its easy
to decorate around them. And take advantage of the Internet. There you can find sites
thatll let you plan your rooms, try lots of
items and see what fits where.
But what to do if a couple just cannot
agree? Bringing in an interior designer to
coordinate and showcase their individual
styles is one way. Another is a separate but
equal method where she decorates one
room and he does another.
Ultimately, though, every happily married
couple will tell newlyweds that talking to
your partner is the only way to arrive at joint
decisions decorating or otherwise.
