Annual CHINACOAT Issue

s we wrap up this months issue, the Coatings World team is busy

making the final preparations to attend CHINACOAT2014.
CHINACOAT is an annual event alternating between Guangzhou
and Shanghai. This year CHINACOAT will be held December 3-5 at the
China Import and Export Fair Complex in Guangzhou. CHINACOAT has
become one of the most important shows for Coatings World to attend.
This issue has three separate features dedicated to the Chinese paint and
coatings market.
Contributing writer, Dan Watson examines the current state of the
Chinese economy in his article China Investor Chaos or Opportunity?
(pg. 47). In this article Watson examines the instability that has been part of
Chinas economic climate. Watson observes that for the past couple of decades we have seen thousands of foreign companies rushing into China to
make an investment, assume the risk of that investment in order to become
a part of Chinas future. For some that has proven to be a wise decision
while for others it didnt turn out exactly as planned. Today, China is the
second largest economy on the globe with a lot of experts predicting that it
will surpass the U.S. in the next few years. It has enjoyed an unprecedented
growth of its GDP over the past two or three decades. So, with that thought
in mind, the question posed by this article is simply considering everything
that is happening in the world today is China still the land of opportunity,
is it still worth the assumption of country risk by future investors?
China correspondent Arnold Wangs (pg. 52) article, China Coatings
Industry Speeds Up Adjustment, takes a look at the key trends shaping the
market for paint and coatings in China. According to Wang, water-based
coatings will expand market share in China over the coming years.
If you are planning on attending CHINACOAT, our CHINACOAT
Preview (page 54) will give you an excellent starting point for getting yourself organized.
As this issue went to press, CHINACOAT2014 currently had a total
of 898 direct exhibitors, comprised of 675 from China, 45 from Hong
Kong and Taiwan regions and 178 from overseas, representing 26 different
countries. Overall, 974 companies will be represented. This years event
attracted 183 new exhibitors, comprised of 149 from China, 5 from Hong
Kong and Taiwan regions and 29 from overseas.
If you plan on making the trip to Guangzhou this year be sure to stop
by our booth and say hello and pick up the latest issue of our magazine.
For those that will not be able to make the journey, Coatings World will
be reporting Live From the Show. Be sure to go to our website at www.

PPG Opens Regional Headquarters

for Architectural Coatings Business

PPG Industries recently marked the

opening of a regional headquarters for
its architectural coatings business in the
U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico. The facility is located in Cranberry Township,
Pennsylvania, approximately 20 miles
north of PPGs global headquarters in
Pittsburgh. The 118,000-square-foot facility will accommodate approximately 550
employees in various management, marketing, information technology, customer
support and related service and administration positions. Nearly 400 employees
currently work at the site, and PPG anticipates the facility will be close to full capacity by the end of 2015 as it continues to
consolidate operations from multiple sites.
As PPG continues to expand its architectural coatings business, establishing a regional headquarters is an important step in
aligning our business to meet our customers
growing needs, said Charles E. Bunch, PPG
chairman and CEO. The official opening of
this facility further strengthens our presence
in the state and in the Pittsburgh area, which
has been home to our global headquarters
for more than 130 years.
Our new headquarters serving the
U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico will allow us
to enhance collaboration within our business, enabling us to continue building the
strong brands within our product portfolio, said Scott Sinetar, PPG vice president,
architectural coatings, U.S. and Canada.
The facility features an open floor plan
with collaborative workspaces, an amphitheater for large-scale employee meetings
and presentations, product showcase store,
training facilities and areas to pilot retail
displays. The grand opening event featured speeches by Pennsylvania Gov. Tom
Corbett and PPG leadership, and it was attended by more than 200 PPG employees.
Throughout the Pittsburgh region and
the entire commonwealth, we are seeing wellknown, well-respected Pennsylvania companies like PPG choosing our Keystone State as
the best place to build their businesses, create
jobs and grow our economy, Corbett said.

Government should be an advocate, not an

adversary, to creating jobs, and we are building a stronger Pennsylvania by making sure

our commonwealth remains the best place to

live, work and thrive. This is a great day for
PPG and a great day for Pennsylvania. CW

Attending the opening ceremony for PPGs new regional headquarters for its architectural coatings business are Scott B. Sinetar, vice president, PPG Architectural Coatings, U.S. and Canada; Charles E. Bunch,
chairman andchief executive officer, PPG Industries; Pennsylvania Governor Tom Corbett and Michael H.
McGarry, chief operating officer, PPG Industries.

Sherwin-Williams Predicts Optimistic 2015

The world of color is moving in vibrant

new directions, and Sherwin-Williams
Color Forecast 2015 tells optimistic color stories that reflect a brightened outlook and adventurous spirit for the year
ahead. Sherwin-Williams color experts researched trends in art, fashion, science and
pop culture to create the colorful, four-palette forecast, which is designed to provide
consumers with inspiration for upcoming
painting and home design projects.
Were seeing a more cheerful approach to design and have forecasted
colors that provide inspiration for people to create fresh, joyful interiors, said
Jackie Jordan, director of color marketing, Sherwin-Williams. Color Forecast
2015 features colors that can work for
any space and design aesthetic, whether
its a dreamy bedroom or a vibrant entertaining space.
Based on extensive research and the
unique drivers of todays design trends,
the 40 colors of the forecast are grouped
into four palettes: Chrysalis, Voyage,
Buoyant and Unrestrained.
Chrysalis
As technology rushes relentlessly ahead, the
colors of Chrysalis evoke a calm oasis a
place to pause and find balance. The palette, with colors ranging from off-black to
chalky neutrals and dusty blues, is designed
to create a more comfortable interior.
An important influence for Chrysalis
is the appreciation of earths natural striations, said Jordan. The patterns created
by land and sky are driving design inspiration, therefore the palettes colors are
found in nature, from rocks found on the
beach to a stormy sky.
Another driver is the layering and deconstruction of geometric shapes to appear
soft, which parallels the monochromatic
couture found on fashion runways.
Voyage
From space tourism and undersea resorts, the far-fetched, sci-fi dreams of

past decades more viable than ever. The

Voyage palette looks to these outer limits, featuring hues that represent the color
spectrum imagined while emerging from
the water into the atmosphere undersea
teal, bright green kelp, light watery blue
and deep space purple.
The colors of Voyage are supernatural and magical. The palette is largely
driven by unusual atmospheric events,
including a decade-best aurora borealis,
that will be keeping our eyes focused on
the heavens, said Jordan. The lighter
colors of the palette create a space that
is uplifting, while the deeper tones can be
combined for a more dramatic design.
Buoyant
Weve weathered the recession and are
finally seeing hopeful signs of growth
and expansion. Our revived good spirits
echo the optimism that followed World
War II, when GIs returned home from
exotic locales, bringing a wave of tropical prints and tiki-inspired looks, said
Jordan. Like that era, were expressing
our enthusiasm with big, bright florals in
fashion and interiors.
The colors of Buoyant are reminiscent
of vintage floral patterns light and deep
greens, violets and a pop of coral. In addition to renewed optimism, the palette is also
inspired by the natural healing of botanicals, as well as the incorporation of green
spaces into even the most densely urban environments. Backyards, once a landscaping
afterthought, are now as important as front
yards, with builders investing in rear curb
appeal and outdoor rooms.
Unrestrained
From bold, ethnic-inspired colors and
designs to the Bohemian lifestyle, the
Unrestrained palette celebrates a carefree
spirit, wanderlust and pulsing color. The
palette features saturated primary hues,
including sunny yellow, lively turquoise
and bright blue, as well as black and
white. Each can be used on its own for

10 | Coatings World www.coatingsworld.com

a pop of color, or combined, to create a

vibrant, energetic space.
South Africas colorful art scene and
focus on the 2016 Summer Olympics in
Rio de Janeiro have strongly influenced a
Carnival-like spirit. This spirit is inspiring
design with a zest for life, and the vibrant
colors of Unrestrained are a reflection of
that design aesthetic, said Jordan.
Using Sherwin-Williams suite of easyto-use color selection tools, people can
explore Color Forecast 2015 and more
than 1,500 Sherwin-Williams colors.
Online tools include Chip It!, which creates a colorful palette from any picture,
and Sherwin-Williams Color Visualizer,
which enables consumers to virtually try
on paint colors. The ColorSnap smartphone app allows consumers to create a
palette from a photo or explore colors by
family, while the ColorSnap Studio iPad
app offers color inspiration and allows
consumers to virtually paint a wall.

AkzoNobel Unveils
New Color Trends and
Announces 2015 Color of
the Year

trends, providing added impetus for the
companys recently launched Human

explained Ruud Joosten, managing director of AkzoNobels Decorative Paints

Now in its 12th year, Colour

Futures underlines AkzoNobels
wealth of color expertise and
deep understanding of the transformative power of color. This unrivalled

but also plays a critical role in the companys Human Cities initiative, which aims

Ruud Joosten, AkzoNobels Executive
Committee member responsible for
Decorative Paints, added: Color and
heritage are vital elements of our global
Human Cities initiative because they help
shape the identity of a society. And this
palette lets everyone enjoy a little piece of
heritage in their own homes.
The idea of making the shades available to the public was prompted by
analysis of the characteristic colors used
by Van Gogh, such as the blue sky in
Almond Blossom and the yellow in the
world famous Sunflowers.
This marvelous paint range is an example of how the partnership between the
Van Gogh Museum and AkzoNobel can
be mutually beneficial, said Axel Rger,
Director of the Van Gogh Museum. We
are very proud of the new palette, which
builds on the support AkzoNobel is providing for our restoration workshop.
The color range is also evidence that
Van Goghs art is still a daily inspiration,
which will soon be available to help make

peoples homes more beautiful.

The ten new colors will be available in
the Netherlands as of November 15 from
Sikkens outlets and will then be gradually rolled out to other countries. The
full palette of colors features: Sun Yellow,
The Yellow House, Sunflower Yellow, Felt
Beige, Blossom White, Daubigny Green,
Forest Green, Sky Blue, Iris Blue and
Bedroom Red. As a partner of the Van
Gogh Museums restoration workshop,
AkzoNobel is contributing to the preservation of the cultural heritage of Vincent
van Gogh and his contemporaries. The
company and its Sikkens brand also advises the Van Gogh Museum on innovative and sustainable paint products for
the museums interior.

for many years and were delighted that
our relationship will continue.
He went on to explain that Honda

impressed by the color matching achieved
using AkzoNobel tools, such as Mixit
Pro, which will enable tracking and assistance of the network to maximize profit
from paint.
Simon Parker, managing director of

capacity several times, adjusting

batch sizes and shift operation.
This is a significant expansion for Shildon and positions
us well for expected growth of aerospace sealants in Europe, the Middle
East, India and Africa, Lambourne said.
The added capacity expands PPGs
global sealants manufacturing footprint,
complementing the sealants product line
made at Mojave, California.
The first phase of the expansion was
completed on the cell that produces accelerators used in two-component sealants
for high-performance aerospace fuel tank
and fuselage applications, Lambourne
said. The second phase was on the cell
that produces the base compound, supporting all polysulfide and polythioether
polymer production for those same highperformance products, he said.
The Shildon facility predominantly
services the EMEA region through PPG
application support centers in Shildon;
Hamburg,
Germany;
Gonfreville,

France; and Dubai, United Arab

Emirates. The ASCs repackage sealants
in SEMCO packaging and application
systems with value-added packaging
that includes premixed, frozen sealant and SEMKIT packages that provide mixed sealant at customized fill
weights. They also work with customers to develop and produce customized
sealant solutions, such as PRC seal caps
that are used to dome-seal fasteners.

BASFs Product Portfolio

Evaluated for Sustainability
In order to better help its customers align
environmental and societal aspects with
business success, BASF has developed
a new process for steering its portfolio based on sustainability criteria. The
Sustainable Solution Steering method is
used to systematically review and evaluate the sustainability aspects of the approximately 50,000 relevant product
applications in the companys portfolio,
which represent sales of 56 billion. The
benefit: This externally validated process
makes it possible to measure the products contribution to sustainability within
their various markets and industries and
to increase this contribution through targeted st EPS.
Over the past three years, BASF has
analyzed more than 80 percent of its portfolio of approximately 50,000 specific
product applications. The data shows,
for example, how a product contributes
to cost effectiveness and resource conservation as well as to health and safety.
The concrete sustainability requirements
of various customer industries are taken
into account as well as regional differences. Finally, the process determines the
extent to which BASF solutions can accommodate these needs.
Based on the results to date, the analyzed product applications have been
sorted into four categories:
Accelerators make a substantial contribution in the value chain to sustainability. 22 percent of the analyzed products
by sales are in this category.
Performers are solutions that meet
the standard market requirements for
sustainability. Around 73 percent fall under this category.

20 | Coatings World www.coatingsworld.com

For the Transitioners , specific sustainability issues have been identified and
concrete action plans defined. These recommendations are in the process of being implemented. Around 4.5 percent of the analyzed
products are currently in this category.
Applications with a significant
sustainability concern are labeled
Challenged. BASF is developing action
plans for these products in order to find
improved solutions. This currently applies to 0.5 percent.
Sustainable Solution Steering aims to
increase the number of Accelerator solutions in the long term in order to further
improve the sustainability profile of both
BASF and its customers. That is why the
product portfolio is under continual review which means that this four-category segmentation is also subject to change,
for example, in response to altered market requirements or new legislation.
The whole product portfolio will have
been analyzed by the end of 2014. With
this new method, BASF continues to
drive its We create chemistry strategy.
It is becoming increasingly important
to our customers to be able to combine
economic, environmental and societal
demands. We see this development as a
business opportunity for BASF, and intend to seize it in a targeted manner. This
approach forms an integral part of our
corporate purpose: We create chemistry
for a sustainable future. By analyzing
our entire portfolio with respect to sustainability and systematically expanding on especially sustainable solutions,
we underscore this endeavor, said Kurt
Bock, chairman of the Board of Executive
Directors of BASF.

Results of U.S. Architectural Coatings Industry Research Report

Which Compared Business Trends in 3Q14 vs. 3Q13
Each month, we survey a large sample of paint retailers throughout the United States to get a sense for current business trends.
Please note that of the three primary architectural coatings channels (paint stores, home centers, and retail distributors), this survey
is primarily reflective of the distributor channel which tends to see volume growth less than the industry; therefore, we view the
results as a directional indicator more so than absolute industry volumes. For inquiries regarding this report please contact Kevin
Hocevar at 216-468-6924 or kevin.hocevar@northcoastresearch.com.
Architectural Coatings Sales Volumes Up 1.2% in 3Q14 vs. 3Q13
According to industry participants, average sales volumes increased 1.2% thus far in 3Q14 compared to 3Q13. This compares
to record volume growth in our index of 2.6% in 2Q14 and 1.8% in 1Q14. Weather conditions improved across the country in
2Q14 and the industry saw paint sales accelerate which have tempered off slightly in 3Q14. We are encouraged with the positive underlying trends in 3Q14 as paint volumes continue to grow on a year-over-year comparison 3Q14 represents modestly
slower year-over-year growth compared to 2Q14, but growth nonetheless. Overall, 63% of respondents witnessed an increase in
paint volumes vs. only 21% that saw paint volumes decline, which averaged out to 1.2% year-over-year volume growth with a net
increase of 42%.
Price of Paint from Suppliers 3Q14 Paint Prices Largely Flat as Prior Increases Have Anniversaries
58% of contacts noted that the price of paint from suppliers was flat in 3Q14 vs. 3Q13 as our paint price index only increased 0.8%
which compares to average price increases of 1.5%-2.0% in 2013 and in-line with our paint price index of 0.8% and 1.0% in 1Q14
and 2Q14, respectively. Bottom line, we believe that price increases from when coatings manufacturers were trying to recover
rising raw material costs have anniversaried; therefore, price increases have been less pronounced with 3Q14 marking the first time
the majority of contacts (58%) reported flat year-over-year prices from paint manufacturers. Overall, 33% of respondents witnessed
an increase in pricing vs. only 9% that saw pricing decline, which averaged out to a 0.8% increase in year-over-year price with a net
increase of 24% as the majority of contacts (58%) reported flat year-over-year pricing in 3Q14.
Raw Materials TiO2 Remains Benign; Propylene Increases but not Noticeable to Coatings Manufacturers
Titanium dioxide (TiO2) prices have been stabilizing in recent months after witnessing sharp declines in early 2013; however,
propylene has increased, which we believe stems from increased demand in North America and a recent plant outage both
tightening supply vs. demand. Despite the small uptick in propylene, we anticipate the overall basket of raws will remain relatively
benign over the near-term. Our data and recent conversations with industry contacts suggest that price increases attempted by
TiO2 producers in January 2014 (the last time a price increase was attempted) were ultimately unsuccessful and there has been no
evident traction for price increases to stick until at least late 2014/early 2015.
3-Month Outlook Outlook Favorable Despite Busy Paint Season in Rearview Mirror
Our proprietary Coatings 3-Month Outlook Index reached 0.57 in 3Q14 which compares to 0.41 in 3Q13 and 0.78 in 2Q14. Due
to the upcoming fall and winter seasons, outlooks at this time of the year tend to come in sequentially; however, our outlook index
of 0.57 represents year-over-year improvement compared to 0.41 in 3Q13. Please note that the highest possible reading is +2
(indicating all contacts have a very positive outlook) and the lowest possible reading is -2 (indicating all contacts have a very
negative outlook). We view 0.57 in 3Q14 as a positive as our outlook index remains at elevated levels and has improved yearover-year. 53% of contacts shared a positive (43%) or very positive (10%) 3-month outlook, 41% believe that the current positive
trends will remain the same, and the remaining 6% have a negative outlook in 3Q14.

Communities Across the

Globe Join USGBCs Green
Apple Day of Service
The third annual Green Apple Day of
Service, which took place on Saturday,
Sept. 27, 2014, brought together hundreds of thousands of volunteers participating in 3,760 service projects in all
50 states and in 42 countries throughout
the world. An initiative of the Center for
Green Schools at the U.S. Green Building
Council (USGBC), the Day of Service
brings together students, teachers, parents, elected officials, organizations and
companies to transform their schools into
healthy, safe, cost-efficient and productive learning places.
This years Day of Service featured
a flagship event in Washington, D.C.
where U.S. Secretary of Education Arne
Duncan and his family joined volunteers

at Tubman Elementary School for gardening and painting projects and several
sustainability education activities for students and their families.
At the Center for Green Schools,
were continually inspired by the dedication of local communities and volunteers
to improve the places where our children
learn, said Rachel Gutter, director of the
Center for Green Schools at USGBC. On
this third annual Green Apple Day of
Service, we couldnt be more humbled by
the sheer volume of activity to transform
our schools and communities. Hundreds
of thousands of volunteers around the
globe are sending a clear message that
where we learn matters. To each and every one of these dedicated individuals we
say, thank you.
Cities and towns across the country
and around the world were active in the
Day of Service events: In Chicago, volunteers convened at John M. Smyth Magnet
and IB World School to make improvements at the school including the building
of new garden boxes, weeding in existing
gardens and creating a restorative space
in the school for students.
Students at Cristo Rey Jesuit High
School in Atlanta updated the community garden, participated in a schoolwide clean up and recycling initiative,
launched an environmental awareness
program and encouraged student-led
trash-to-treasure recycling projects.

24 | Coatings World www.coatingsworld.com

To commemorate this effort, the school

also created a mural representing the
Cristo Rey motto to promote environmental sustainability.
In New Orleans, the Center
for
Sustainable
Engagement
and
Development is renovating a 130-yearold barge board house into an environmental education and visitor center. The
site will give visitors the ability to peek
into the construction and see the types of
energy efficiency upgrades that have been
made to the house, serving as a model of
energy efficiency and as a neighborhood
hub in the Lower 9th Ward community.
At the Instituto Thomas Jefferson,
thousands of students across all five
Mexico City and Guadalajara campuses
made personal commitments to sustainability at their school, taking action on
school-wide campaigns in support of recycling, habitat restoration, water conservation and more.
Many of todays schools are beset
by a host of challenges that compromise our childrens health and wellness, causing everything from asthma
to headaches and concentration issues.
Green Apple is a global movement to
put all children in schools where they
have clean and healthy air to breathe,
where energy and resources are conserved, and where they can be inspired
to dream of a brighter future.

Market Reports

Positive Outlook for Indian Paint Market

The Indian paint industry is likely to

surge from the current level of about
Rs. 40,600 crore to about Rs. 62,000
crore by 2016 witnessing double-digit
compound annual growth rate (CAGR)
of about 20 percent, according to The
Associated Chambers of Commerce and
Industry of India (ASSOCHAM).
The factors that have fuelled the paint
industrys growth are the rise in disposable income and education, increasing
urbanization, development of the rural
market and various launches of many innovative products.
The ASSOCHAM report on Indian
paint Industry: 2014 reveals that
India is the second-largest consumer of
paint in Asia. Top players include Asian
Paints, Kansai Nerolac Paints, Berger
Paints, AkzoNobel, Nippon Paints and
Shalimar Paints.
The Indian paint industry has seen a
gradual shift in the preferences of people
from the traditional white wash to higher
quality paints like emulsions and enamel
paints,said D S Rawat, secretary general
ASSOCHAM.
As per the ASSOCHAM findings,
the rural market has grown at a rate of
around 20 percent per year (in financial year 2014). Increase in sales outside
metros, as rural Indias incremental consumption expenditure is witnessing a
handsome growth.
The rural sector has a major share of
the decorative paints segment. Thus, any
benefit to the rural sector for improving
the dispensable income is directly corelated to the growth of the paint industry.
Besides, decorative paints are marketing
savvy products backed by large advertisement campaigns and dealership networks.
In FY14, the paint industry stood
at Rs 40,600 crore with per capita consumption increasing to over 4 kgs, out of
which the decorative segment contributed nearly 73 percent at Rs 29,638 crore,
while the remaining Rs 10,962 crore was
contributed by the industrial segment.

Demands for decorative paints arise

from household paintings, architectural
and other display products. The demand
for paint increases during festive season
like Dusherra, Diwali, Onam, Christmas /
New Year, as compared to other periods,
said Rawat.
The major boost to the growth in the
Indian paint market has been provided
by the decorative paint segment, which is
anticipated to grow at a CAGR of more
than 18 percent during the period 201415. The decorative paint market has
been further segmented into emulsions,
enamel, distemper and cement paints.
Similarly, the industrial paint market is
also segmented into automotive coating,
high performance coating, powder coating and coil coating, adds the paper.
Some of the major reasons for the rise
in the paint industry are awareness about
environment and increases in disposable
income are leading to demand for premium paints. The rising income levels
and exposure to global trends have made
consumers very aspiring and also become
health conscious and using environmental friendly products, according to the
ASSOCHAM paper.
The unorganized sector controls around
35 percent of the paint market, with the
organized sector accounting for the balance. In the unorganized segment, there
are about 2,500 units having small and
medium sized paint manufacturing plants.
Top organized players include Asian Paints,
Kansai Nerolac, Berger Paints and ICI.

Growth Expected to

Anticorrosion Coating
Market
GCiS China Strategic Research estimates
that the domestic market for anticorrosion coatings in China was worth more
than RMB 36 billion in 2013, with sales
of roughly 1.4 Mn Tons. The study finds
that growth in 2013 was only 2.8 percent,
far below the rapid, often double-digit

30 | Coatings World www.coatingsworld.com

growth seen in the previous few years.

This was due in large part to the slow
growth of key downstream industries, especially in the shipbuilding sector, which
saw a strong decline in 2012 and 2013.
Domestic suppliers are mostly small
manufacturers that are regionally active
and benefit from long standing customer
relations. The market leaders are a handful of foreign suppliers AkzoNobel,
Jotun, PPG, Hempel that generate far
more revenue than even their largest domestic competitors. Domestic suppliers
are improving on technology and product quality, but for the moment the target
market still offers better opportunities to
suppliers of high-quality coatings.
The report features in-depth analysis of
seven key anticorrosion coating product
segments, epoxy, polyurethane, rich zinc
primer, alkyd, fluorocarbon, acrylic, and
chlorinated rubber. It finds that the market is gradually shifting towards higher
quality epoxy and polyurethane coatings.
Shipbuilding and construction remain as
the two largest end-user industries, followed by containers and the petrochemical and chemical industries. GCiS research
shows that supplier confidence is high,
mainly because of an expected recovery
in demand from the shipbuilding sector.
GCiS expects growth of the market will
significantly improve starting from 2014.

DuPont India Consumer

Study Reveals High Level
of Interest in Green &
Biobased Products
The DuPont Green Living Survey: India,
conducted by TNS Global, found that a
majority of Indian consumers are familiar
with green products, have confidence that
green products are better for the environment, and feel that biobased ingredients
enhance the desirability of a product.
DuPont commissioned this nationwide survey with an objective to better understand awareness and attitudes
of Indian consumers toward green and
biobased products. The survey was the
third such study by the company with
the first in North America (U.S. and
Canada) and the second in China. The
research took place in 12 major Indian
cities with 1,270 respondents giving
face-to-face interviews.
Green and biobased solutions are not
only essential to address the challenges of
Indias growing population, but also an
expectation of a younger generation and
rising middle class. We are particularly
encouraged that there is broad awareness of green products across the country
with Indias younger generation leading
the way, said Vikram Prabhu, regional
business director, Asia Pacific, DuPont
Industrial Biosciences.

October 2014 www.coatingsworld.com

Market Reports

The consumer and commercial markets for biocides are expected to show the
slowest growth going forward.

In the survey, more than 63

percent of consumers are familiar with green products and of
those, 85 percent have confidence
that they are better for the environment.
These consumers believe biobased ingredients not only make a product green, but
also provide better performance, critical
to long-term adoption.
It is interesting to note that Indias
confidence in green products being better for the environment (85 percent) is
higher than other countries surveyed by
DuPont in previous years. Previous studies showed China with 70 percent confidence, Canada with 65 percent and the
United States with 60 percent.
However, Canada (78 percent) and the
United States (76 percent) lead in overall
familiarity with green products over India
(63 percent) and China (43 percent).
Regionally, familiarity of green products was found to be highest in South (83
percent) and East (68 percent), followed
by West (42 percent) and North (53 percent). Consumers from South India also
are most confident (95 percent) that green
products are better for the environment.
Awareness of green products is high
across the country, with younger consumers below age 30 showing the highest
level of familiarity (69 percent) followed
by ages 51+ (60 percent) and ages 31-50
(58 percent). Since nearly 50 percent of
Indias current population is below the
age of 25, there is strong potential for
green product adoption and demand
growth. Currently, more than two-thirds
(67 percent) of consumers are likely to
purchase apparel, personal care, hygiene
and household products made from biobased ingredients that offer environmental benefits.
Across the market, roughly half of
consumers recognize the term biobased
in conjunction with green products and
say that biobased ingredients enhance the
desirability of a product, enough so that
they would consider paying a premium
price for these products. The research is
based on interviews with Indian consumers in New Delhi, Mumbai, Ahmadabad,
Pune, Kolkata, Chennai, Bangalore,
Hyderabad, Lucknow, Chandigarh, Patna
and Kochi. CW

ustainability has been a concept which

regional and national trade associations
in Europe has been encouraging coatings
producers and their suppliers to adopt to ensure that the coatings sector move in a more
environmentally friendly direction.
Now it is becoming, particularly among the
larger players in the industry, a means of gaining a competitive edge. Sustainability is being
used as a marketing tool against rivals.

36 | Coatings World www.coatingsworld.com

Competitive claims have been extended to

whole supply chains with producers maintaining that their procurement arrangements for
raw materials does more to protect the environment that those of other coatings businesses.
Sustainability has become a key part of the
growth and marketing strategies of some coatings companies with large amounts of space
devoted to it in their annual and corporate responsibility reports.
Most of these companies are based in northern
Europe, where ecological matters tend to be given
more social, cultural and political importance.
Scandinavian companies in particular are inclined
to give top priority to sustainability issues.
October 2014

Europe International Coatings Scene

These center around aspects like energy consumption, carbon footprints, waste
reduction and disposal and emissions
of volatile organic compounds (VOCs)
and other pollutants threatening human
health as well as the environment.
In most cases this means introducing
innovations and new products which go
beyond what is demanded by regulations, even eco-label systems and, significantly, what the vast majority of other
coatings companies are doing in the sustainability area.
Most of the major Europeanbased coatings companies such as
AkzoNobel, Jotun, Hempel, Tikkurila.
BASF Coatings and a growing number
of small- and medium-sized ones now
have concepts of sustainability well embedded into their strategies.
A major pace-setter among the top
group has been AkzoNobel, which is both
a coatings and speciality chemicals manufacturer. It has just been ranked number
one in the global materials sector for the
third successive year on the influential
Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI).
Its objective is to ensure that in as
many areas a possible the sustainability
levels it achieves are higher than those of
its competitors.
Our sustainability strategic targets
are that 20 percent of revenue by 2020
will come from products that are more
sustainable for our customers than the
products of our customers, Conrad
Keijzer, AkzoNobels executive board
member responsible for the companys
performance coatings operation, told a
recent press briefing in London. Also we
have a target of a 25-30 percent more efficient resource and energy use across the
entire value chain by 2020 measured by
carbon footprint reduction.
An important part of the companys
sustainability activities is its eco-premium
products and services scheme, for which
it has a target share of 20 percent of revenue by 2020 against 18 percent last year.
The criteria for judging what qualifies as having an eco-premium include
toxicity, energy efficiency, use of natural
resources, emissions and waste and landuse footprint. It has to be significantly
better than other products or services on

the market in at least one criteria and not

significantly worse in any of them, according to the company.
As a result, when competitors improve their products, AkzoNobel has to
ensure that it can upgrade its own existing eco-premium products to remain
ahead of its rivals.
The eco-status of coatings is increasingly being assessed on the basis of the
level of compliance among raw material
and other suppliers with standards on
the environment and human safety and
well-being.
AkzoNobel has a policy under which
all suppliers considered be critical are
subject to audits aimed at raising their
capabilities and performances in sustainability areas.
Hempel runs a system under which
suppliers are audited by questionnaire,
which is followed up by on-site visits of
those who scored poorly.
Jotun works with suppliers to ensure
they comply with the United Nations
Global Compact on environmentally sustainable and socially responsible policies.
Its audit program had covered 430 suppliers by the end of last year.
The construction sector, including
commercial, industrial and infrastructure
projects, has been targeted by coatings
companies which consider themselves
to have sustainability advantages. This
is mainly because the greening of the
construction industry by schemes like
Leadership in Energy & Environmental
Design (LEED).
Coatings companies have, for example, been reducing the VOC content of
their products below those demanded by
regulation or even eco-label projects.
Hempel has recently introduced anti-corrosion coatings for storage tanks
which contains only 22 grams of VOCs
per liter compared with a level of 320
grams per liter in comparable products.
There have been a number of initiatives to provide low-emission interior
coatings which safeguard indoor air
quality (IAQ) from pollutants an area
which has not yet been covered by a specific European Union regulation. Some of
these products have a low level of formaldehyde regarded as a possible threat

October 2014 www.coatingsworld.com

to air quality. AkzoNobel has launched

a coating for interior walls and ceilings
with a bamboo charcoal ingredient which
can purify air containing formaldehydes,
benzenes and other low-level VOCs.
Marine coatings is a market with intense sustainability competition among
its three European-based leaders Jotun,
AkzoNobel and Hempel. They have all
recently introduced a range of anti-fouling paints which help ship owners cut
their energy consumption and achieve
the shipping industrys voluntary CO2
reduction targets.
The coatings producers have been
making various claims about the energy
efficiency and CO2-decreasing capabilities of their products. These are often
challenged by their competitors and users
of other coatings, mainly because a uniform method for measuring their energy
efficiency has not yet been drawn up.
Jotun has been working with
Norways Bellona Foundation, an environmental NGO, on the creation by the
Geneva-based International Organisation
for Standardisation (ISO) for gauging
variations in the energy efficiencies of
ships hulls and propellers.
Now all three of the leading marine
coatings producers, together with ship
owners and academic specialists, have
become members of the working group
drawing up the standard.
The aim with the standard is to make
available to the industry an open and
transparent methodology for measuring
changes in ship-specific hull and propeller
performance, said Geir Axel Oftedahl,
Jotuns business development director,
hull performance solutions and a member
of the working group, The aim is not to
prescribe what is an acceptable level of
performance, he stressed.
A draft standard is scheduled to be
agreed by the working group committee
in March next year, after which a final
version should be published by the end
of 2016. To come into operation it will
have to be approved first by the ISO
member countries.
Standards are a necessity if sustainability is to be moved forward. But they
are also needed to increase competition
among sustainability coatings. CW

Powder Coatings Rise Steadily in Mexico

by Charles W. Thurston
Latin America Correspondent
thurstoncw@rodmanmedia.com

exicos demand for powder

coatings is on a constant upward incline thanks to strong
domestic demand fueled by a growing
population with rising per capita income.
Mexicos demand is also growing because
the countrys hard goods manufacturing
base has become a major contender for
supplying the rest of Latin America, if not
the world.
Mexicos manufacturing sector is a
well-oiled machine. Manufacturing production in Mexico increased 3.37 percent in July 2014 over the same month
in the prior year, and it has averaged 2.52
percent over the past decade, according
to the Instituto Nacional de Estadstica y
Geografa (INEGI).
A good portion of the manufacturing growth is dedicated to white goods,
and particularly to appliances, with production led by Mabe, based in Mexico
City. Globally, appliances represent some
13 percent of the powder coatings market, according to a study by the Paint
Research Association.
Mexicos demand for white goods
is driven by the expanding population,
which at some 123 million, ranks 11th in
global population rankings, behind Japan
and ahead of Canada. Thanks to the success of the North American Free Trade
Agreement, Mexicos GDP per capita was
close to $8,500 in 2013, compared with
China at $3,600 and Brazil at $5,900,
according to Trading Economics, using
World Bank data.
In September, AB Electrolux agreed to
acquire the appliances business of General
Electric for $3.3 billion, including a 48.4
percent share in privately-held Mabe. GE
Appliances and Mabe have had a joint venture for three decades and a large portion

of the GE product line sold in North

America was manufactured by Mabe, GE
notes. Mabe had 2013 sales of estimate $4
billion and has 21,000 employees.
GE also noted that By the mid 90s, more
than two-thirds of all gas ranges and refrigerators imported into the U.S. were designed
and manufactured by Mabe in Mexico, while
95 percent of those sold under the General
Electric names were designed in Mabes San
Luis Potosi plant. Mabe has 15 manufacturing facilities and Whirlpool is now its greatest
competitor in Mexico.
As such, Mabe is the appliance leader
in Latin America, it also sells its products
in about 70 countries, Mabe indicated.
Mabes market share in Mexico is estimated at 47 percent, is 43 percent in Colombia,
60 percent in Venezuela, and 26 percent in
Canada, the company indicates.
Among powder coatings suppliers to Mexico, Axalta Coating Systems,
based in Philadelphia, in August announced plans to invest $10.5 million in
Tlalnepantla, Mexico, to expand capacity
to produce resins used in the manufacture

of transportation coatings. We export

from Mexico and Colombia to customers in Central America and the rest of
South America, respectively. Specifically,
we operate in El Salvador, Guatemala
and Honduras where we are focused on
generating product and brand awareness
and are operating with one of the most
important distributors of the region,
said Alfredo Villalobos, the company industrial director for Latin America.
Axalta is also targeting the architectural construction sector. For the architectural segment, we have developed a line
of powder coatings based on a sublimation
printing process to produce aluminum architectural pieces with unique and attractive
finishes and that offer superior performance
along with a low cost product portfolio that
we believe will also grow in the segment,
he added.
Among other powder coat suppliers
to Mexico is TCI of Ellaville, GA, which
recently expanded its technical service
support in Mexico, with plans to service
Latin America in part from there. CW

Conviction In Opposition
To Commitments
by Phil Phillips, PhD
Contributing Editor
phillips@chemarkconsulting.net

Assess how youre investing your

resources: Place time & energy spent onto
these values

s there a gap between what you hold dear and supportive

action (commitment) to reinforce that set of convictions?
When we say that family, professional achievement, financial security, are the most important things in our lives and in
that order, do we really understand what it takes to fulfill that
obligation order or, are we just kidding ourselves?
Do we find a space between the things we value most and the
way we actually spend our time, resources and concentration?
This space may be a grand canyon or a gorge in size, but in
either case this space/gap should concern us about how we manage the differences sandwiched between ostensible values and
our authentic behavior.
Crisis, many times, define us in real terms: For example,
death in the family, illness of a dear one, divorce, or bankruptcy
. . . . have turned peoples focus onto something or things, not
sought after prior to these life-altering events, but nonetheless,
the things that really matters to us.
The large question is what do we have to encounter any of
these major crises before we change?
There are systematic processes that can alter the way we deal
with the gap between CONVICTION and COMMITMENT.
Here are a few tips Messrs. Donald N. Sull & Dominic Houlder
developed through HBR (Harvard Business Review) that have
been successful in their practice.

Inventory your values: Heres some

arbitrary values that one could consider

Identify gaps between your values and

commitments:
Do some of your values receive little to none of your time, money and energy; is there a single value that drains a disproportionate share of your resources?

Understand what has caused the gaps:

Taken on more obligations without considering the long-term
effects on other obligations. Or, you have let others define what
success looks like for you.

Change course:
To change course without an outside crisis dictating it,
invent an artificial but meaningful time out to be thrown
into the your value mix. Time outs can be in the form of
a sabbatical, educational course, retreat or some other device that gives you an excuse to change old commitments
and forge new ones. To avoid commitment creep, abandon or renegotiate one old commitment for every new on
you make. CW

IPaint Protecting the P&C Industrys Intellectual Assets

The International Trade Commission Your Hometown

Sheriff In the Unfair Foreign Competition Shootout
by Steve McDaniel and Jon Hurt,
Contributing Editors

ou have decided to expand your

coatings business globally. Good
idea. You have dutifully read all
the iPaint articles published in Coatings
World for the last two years regarding
building a Wall around your companys
intellectual property. Thus, you have exercised reasonable and prudent business
care surrounding your IP. Youve papered
up your transactions and disclosures,
youve prevented employee misappropriation, and you are seeing the fruits of your
labor in increased revenue and market
share over competitors whose products
lack the advantages that consumers love
about yours. Basking in the glow of this
success, you begin serious strategic interactions with a foreign corporate entity to
manufacture and distribute your product
outside the U.S., and under the proper
written agreements, you crank it up. But,
the relationship sours shortly thereafter
and there suddenly appears in the U.S.
market a foreign knock off product that
rapidly cuts into your market share, demonstrably erasing the competitive edge
you had achieved with your innovations.
Of course, if you have issued U.S.
patents, you sue for patent infringement
based on those patents. The U.S. patent
laws afford protection over importation
of infringing articles of manufacture. But,
there is an alternative, and it has a nice
hometown feel to it. Its called the ITC,
or the International Trade Commission.
Under Section 1337 in Chapter 19 of
the United States Code (the ITC legal
beagles shorten this to Section 337),
you can seek have unfair trade practices
used to illegally produce imported articles investigated and the importation of
them stopped on the loading docks. The
ITC is the place to go to get the process
started. Established in 1912, the ITC answers to both the legislative and executive

branches of government, and can act to

enforce any U.S. intellectual property
right. And, that includes rights you may
have in your trade secrets. Cool, huh?
Specifically, Section 337 provides for
investigations to prevent importation, sale
for importation or sale after importation
of articles that infringe or misappropriate
trade secret, patents, copyrights, trademarks and trade dress of U.S. companies.
Additionally, articles that use false advertising, whose sale monopolizes trade, restrains trade or prevents the establishment
of, injure or destroy a domestic industry
are also subject to action by the ITC. For
example, dumping a product onto U.S.
markets (i.e., selling a product below the
cost of production or the price in the home
country) or export of a foreign government-subsidized product to the U.S. could
qualify as injury to a domestic industry.
In most cases, youre looking to stop a
particular product imported in which your
company has intellectual property protection. To make a successful ITC case as the
complainant you need to show importation of the article in question, that it infringes your U.S. intellectual property, and
that you meet the domestic industry criteria. For example, you need to show that
you have patents practiced in the U.S. and
that substantial investment activities related to the patented articles occur in the U.S.
such as R&D, licensing, engineering, labor,
and capital expenditures (e.g., equipment,
plants), . . . yada, yada. Infringing articles
may include those that will be immediately
sold or imported into the U.S., as well as
those already sold for importation, imported or sold after importation.
Things that typically happen when a
Section 337 investigation is invoked include: investigations by you prior to filing
a complaint; discovery; trial; U.S. Customs
proceedings; and Appeals to the Federal
Circuit. An administrative law judge
handles the investigation and resolution of
complaints a critical distinction of Federal
District Courts (where litigators like to say

40 | Coatings World www.coatingsworld.com

the judges were appointed by the President

but anointed by God . . . at least in their
own minds).
The ITC moves fast . . . very, very fast
(especially in relation to your typical patent
infringement case in a U.S. Federal District
court). So, you gotta be ready and armed
for bear (and, since you have read about IP
audits in this column in Coatings World,

you are!). The ITC will decide within 30days whether to institute an investigation.
Deadlines for discovery can be as quick
as 10 days after a complaint is filed, and
includes the power to issue subpoenas nationwide and against foreign respondents.
The discovery process can occur outside
the United States, and may inundate parties
with requests for documents and testimony,
and can extend up to and in some instances
occur during the hearing.
If its you filing an ITC complaint, you
want to get your ducks in a row during your
October 2014

Protecting the P&C Industrys Intellectual Assets IPaint

investigations prior to filing the complaint
so the other guys can be caught with their
pants down with a short discovery process
to prepare a rebuttal. If you are on the receiving end of a complaint, it is best to have
an attorney familiar with ITC practice on
speed-dial. Respondents also dont get
counter-claims heard at the ITC (they get
transferred to a district court), though they
can file an ITC complaint if they meet the
previously mentioned requirements, and can
seek to stay a counterpart district court case.
The ITCs is not to be trifled with (just
like your hometown sheriff). If you meet
the domestic industry criteria such as

the investment activities described above

(e.g., investment in product exploitation,
R&D, engineering, licensing, etc.), the ITC
can stop infringement of your U.S. based
intellectual property. The ITC can issue
temporary exclusion orders of devices that
will be blocked from import (impounded)
into the United States by U.S. Customs. A
temporary cease-and-desist order regarding any commercial actions surrounding
the infringing product (e.g., selling or distributing from inventory) may also be issued and enforced by the ITC. Once the

ITC completes a Section 337 investigation, which can move quickly (i.e., 6-24
months; but, 12-18 months most typically), permanent exclusion and cease and
desist orders can be issued. These orders
generally last the life span of the IP (e.g.,
the remaining years a patent is valid) or
some other period set by the ITC.
The standard for injunctive relief in the
ITC is arguably lower than in district court.
In a U.S. Federal District court, the plaintiff
must first show: that there will be irreparable harm, that there are no adequate remedies in law, that a remedy is warranted in
light of the balance of hardships between
plaintiff and defendant, and that public interest would not be disserved by a permanent injunction. In contrast, the ITC may
issue an exclusion order preventing product
import after finding of trademark violation
with only consideration of the public interest element that the District Court weighs
in its deliberations. Upon a showing that
a limited exclusion order would be circumvented or a pattern of violation and
difficulty in identifying the infringing products source, a general exclusion order may
be issued. Such orders can block foreign
products even if the entity producing them
is unknown, which is particularly helpful in
dealing with fly-by-night counter-fitters.
Violate an ITC order . . . ooohhh thats
gonna leave a mark! Violation of ITC orders can results in fines of twice the imported goods value or $100,000 per day!
Its not all a bed of roses at the ITC
sheriffs office though. For example, rulings in recent years at the Federal Circuit
and ITC levels have indicated that getting
a general exclusion order may be more
difficult in the case of down-stream products that have the infringing technology
as only a PART of the article. Take home
message: name as many infringers (e.g.,
importers, manufacturers) as possible in
the complaint. Additionally, if U.S. foreign
policy will be detrimentally affected, as determined by the U.S. Trade Representative
over a 60-day review, then ITC orders may
be over-ridden (rarely, as in 25 year gaps
from one White House over-ride to the
next). But, if the ITCs decision does not
go your way, you can appeal to the Court
of Appeals for the Federal Circuit.
And, there are things you wont get

October 2014 www.coatingsworld.com

using the ITC route, like monetary damages. You need to file a complaint in a
U.S. district court to seek those types of
damages, the same as you must do when
dealing with infringers that are domestically producing the article. District court
is also an alternative venue to get injunctive relief for either foreign or domestic
infringers, which may be custom tailored
to address specific issues of the case.
District court also offers the opportunity
for a jury trial, in case youre not jazzed
about dealing with ITC commissioners.
The ITCs rocket docket speed is its
strong advantage in stopping profit-eating
infringers. But, keep in mind that the cost of
an ITC case will likely be similar to a multiyear district court case, with the invoices being piled together in short order. This is a
double-edged sword, as one edge of the rapidly piling bills bites you while the other edge
of the accelerated legal expenses is also cutting the other guy. Unlike district court, you
dont have the opportunity to recover legal
fees from the other guy if you win.
If you have deep pockets, your attorney
(or team of attorneys) probably should have
a combination of relevant intellectual property and scientific/technical expertise; ITC
rules, practice and procedures knowledge;
international trade law knowledge; and
Administrative Procedures Act familiarity . . .
meaning, call in the Ghost Busters. Moreover,
unlike district court cases where less than 10
percent go to trial, over 40 percent of ITC
cases are plead before the Administrative
Law Judge so its best you have someone
who knows the rules of this game. If you
are a small business like some of us (i.e., on
a tight budget), consider seeking guidance on
preparing a complaint to the ITC from the
Trade Remedy Assistance Office.
Regardless of whether you are the
complainant or respondent, be prepared
to find a reasonable business solution
outside the court-room. In the end, this
is about cutting deals and making money,
not racking up legal bills. But, having
Marshall Dillon with his meaty paw resting on his holstered Colt six-shooter, belted on by his shiny buckin-bronco buckle,

well as paint and materials profitability in body shops.
As light vehicle OEMs continue to introduce new substrates
and technology that require special equipment and formulations
to repair, the complexity of the painting process increases, added Ruess-Saltz. This trend has resulted in a greater focus on
providing advanced technical training to our customers. Axalta
is increasing the number and scope of training classes with more
on-demand content so that when customers attend a class they
get more booth time, which is practical experience.
While the challenges posed by decreasing accident rates,
higher rate of totals and lower miles driven continue to affect
volume growth in the mature NAFTA and Western European
markets, PPG said it experienced a robust uptick over the past
year. This is due in part to the rebounding economy, as well
as the growing acceptance of our waterborne basecoat technology, especially in North American regions not yet governed by
more stringent VOC regulations, said John Outcalt, PPG vice

president, Global Refinish. Asia, with its continued commercial

growth and increased car parc, continues to be a bright spot for
refinish. The China market is particularly strong as we are benefiting from double-digit growth there. Weaker ROW markets
include Australia and Brazil where their economies continued to
be challenged with growth.
David Brunori, president of Quest Automotive Products said
the current state of the auto refinish is in flux, owing to a number of factors. Change is touching all aspects of our industry
at the global level, he said. Technology, regulatory and the
consolidation of manufacturers and distributors are accelerating at a pace we have never seen before. This change also creates
opportunity for organizations who are nimble and willing to
adapt when others cannot or wont.
Brunori said that this changes are ideal for Quest Automotive
Products. Our culture is entrepreneurial and we have global
distribution and expertise that allows us to seize opportunities
created by change. For example, in the European market, sentiment is shifting towards free to choose brands, like Matrix and
Prospray. Because of this, weve increased efforts in the EU and
simultaneously improved the repairers bottom line while significantly increasing our business in those areas. In North America,
daily news outlets publish stories on consolidation and our industry is acclimating to change. This shift in mind set means
that repairers are open to new solutions - QAP is that solution.
Brunori said there are five main trends in the North American
refinish market: consolidation (at all levels), overcapacity, advanced materials, insurer compensation and the workforce.
Consolidation: every day we hear about a new merger or
acquisition, said Brunori. The industry channels are evolving.

FEATURE Auto Refinish Market

Market constriction is happening throughout the entire supply
chain, from manufacturers to distributors, and some organizations are integrating forward and backward. It is an interesting
dynamic that we understand and embrace. Overcapacity: fewer
collisions and increased totals have spurred declines for nearly
a decade. The result is overcapacity theres not enough work
to keep the estimated 40K shops alive. Our market is responding accordingly.
Advanced Materials: from the 2015 Ford F-150s militarygrade aluminum alloy to BMWs use of carbon fiber and extruded plastic, our vehicles are changing from chassis to electronics
to finish, Brunori continued. This means that shops need to
train their technicians and invest in software and equipment
to fix the newer vehicles. This also means that manufacturers
must provide solutions to these new challenges. Our teams of
experienced formulators thrive in this environment and we are
looking forward to the future. Insurer Compensation: the relationship between insurer and body shop is bittersweet at times.
Shop profits are being squeezed by reduced compensation. QAP
products reduce the impact of shrinking margins to the shop.
Workforce: collision repair industry demographics show
that our workforce is aging, Brunori concluded. Attracting
younger generations to our industry is difficult its not universally seen as desirable. Quest Automotive Products actively engages with the upcoming industry talent by reaching out
to vocational schools and working with the Collision Repair
Education Foundation. We do this two ways: 1) in-kind donations (this year we have already donated over $250,000) and 2)
we created the Artists 4 Education awareness campaign (www.
facebook.com/Artists4Education ).
Sustainability and the move to water-based technolgies continues to be a key driver for the auto refinish market.
A common global trend is the need for increasingly sustainable coatings and productive refinish systems, said Ruess-Saltz.
Lower VOC coatings and, of course, waterborne are important for many customers. Industry consolidation in bodyshops
and among distributors has continued in the U.S. and Canada.
In Latin America were using social media to reach more informed customers interested in improved productivity and color
matching. There has also been a growing demand for increased
professionalism among refinish technicians, both to improve
profitability and to meet the technical specifications of more
complex color formulations that, for example, are needed for
composite materials. Axaltas 45 training centers are gearing up
to meet this need.
PPG identified a number of key trends impacting the auto refinish market: the continuing impact of VOC legislation, lack of
market growth, increased complexity, impact of accident avoidance technology and collision center consolidation.
From a product chemistry perspective, VOC legislation, both
now in effect and emerging, continues to make its impact on refinish and our customers across the globe, said Outcalt. The
critical challenge for us manufacturers is to provide the product systems that not only meet these sustainability requirements
but also deliver on the high expectations for performance and

color match, from collision shops, insurers and vehicle owners

alike. Were seeing the proof that our effort is paying off with the
fact that thousands of performance-minded collision centers in
less strictly regulated regions have also adopted our waterborne
basecoat as their go-to system. Its also interesting to note that we
are now seeing an increased interest for green technology in China
where air quality is a major concern. As the Chinese government
considers measures to reduce solvent emissions, collision repair
shops are readily transitioning to our waterborne technology.
Slow or no market growth is a compelling trend in developed
countries. Thus for an individual collision business to get a bigger share of the market requires competing effectively against
the competition and offering an edge in performance. Since our
success at PPG Refinish depends in large part upon the success
of our customers, we continue to grow and develop our value
added programs targeted at supporting collision centers in ways
that can help them improve their business, said Jim Berkey director, MVP Business Solutions, PPG Automotive Refinish.
In years to come the impact of technology and generational change will add some complexity to the repair process
while slowly reducing the available work, Berkey added.
Thus shops will need to evolve with training, certifications
and equipment to stay current and relevant. Competition will
only get stronger for share and access to work. The Ford F150
represents the first high volume use of aluminum as OEMs
continue the evolution of lightweight substrates driven by the
need to meet CAFE standards. This evolving technology will
continue to drive complexity.
The debate goes on regarding the time frame and potential impact of accident avoidance technology in vehicles. Most
agree that the combination of this technology coupled with the
changes in driving habits within evolving generations will have
a slow but steady negative impact on the volume of repair work
available in the future and a lessening demand for refinishing
products, Berkey added.
In North America, consolation of independent shops into
national chains is happening at a record pace, and thus having
significant impact in the marketplace. This creates an interesting dynamic around performance within the shops, said Greg
DeCamp, general manager, PPG Automotive Refinish. Smaller
independent businesses must create or maintain a performance
advantage to stay competitive when going against a national
footprint. The largest MSOs (multiple shop operations) face the
challenge of ensuring shop-to-shop consistency in performance
and service to retain the sources of work within the shops they
acquire. Overall, this trend is sure to demand a lift in service and
support from manufacturers and distributors as competition for
work intensifies. Accordingly, PPG is strengthening its commitment to the independent distribution channel with programs and
support that will ensure distributors are equipped with the necessary knowledge and resources to meet these changing demands.

Key Issues: profitability and quality

Customers continually strive to improve their businesses,
through both profitability and quality, and need their coatings

company to support that effort. Axalta needs to offer a wide

variety of the most productive coatings possible and employ
technical experts that can quickly and efficiently train our
refinish customers on the most up-to-date application techniques, said Ruess-Saltz. It also means our sales force
needs the know how to help improve shop profitability and
operations. In the U.S., for example, we see the most sophisticated body shops pushing the envelope in cycle time. Our
latest waterborne technologies - Cromax Pro, StandoBlue
and StandoHyd Hi-Tec - are among the most productive waterborne technologies and are designed to meet that challenge
with coverage in 1.5 coats. This greatly reduces time in the
booth and energy usage.
Axalta also sees a huge interest in its Cromax Mosaic product, a low VOC solventborne paint with collision color capability. In Latin America, our customers call increasingly for great
color matching and improved productivity, said Ruess-Slatz.
To meet this demand we provide the latest color development
technology and support tools, such as the Acquire Plus spectrophotometer, to reduce color matching cycle time.
We spend a lot of time in the body shops and their number
one concern is profitability whether it means increasing the
number of jobs, adding value added services, increasing productivity or improving the bottom line, said Brunori. And what
they tell us is that our products have helped them increase their
productivity as well as their profitability. In some cases, shops
are saving over 40 percent on their product spendingthese
are real dollars that go straight to the bottom line. QAP is also
investing heavily in field support staff. Our team of sales and
technical professionals work hard every day at the shop level
in educating and interacting where it matters most the shop.
Auto refinish manufacturers must provide value-added support for increasing body shop performance.

Intensifying competition combined with rising expectations

from work providers focusing on turnaround time and customer
satisfaction make performance the name of the game in collision
repair today, said Berkey. At PPG were focusing on turning
these challenges into opportunities through continued enhancement of our MVP Business Solutions programs that have helped
hundreds of shops reduce their cycle time performance and raise
their CSI performance.
PPGs Green Belt and White Belt training, along with Rapid
Improvement Workshops, focus on cycle time throughput and
educate the entire shop organization on process improvements
that can be achieved through the practical application of Lean
Six Sigma principles. These intense, hands-on courses are supported by a full offering of business development classes on
critical fundamentals such as estimating, production, leadership,
strategic planning and marketing.
This year PPG rolled out Paint Shop Throughput, A Quick
Changeover Approachtraining to help shops gain critical capacity by increasing the throughput of the refinish area, said
Berkey. Data tells us that typical paint booth cycle time across
the average collision center is almost two hours and should be
closer to 70 minutes. By systematically eliminating non-valueadded work and time that creeps into booth work, participating shops are gaining additional booth cycles in a given shift.
Results have been phenomenal with huge increases in critical
capacity by reducing waste.

Innovations
Brunori sees future technologies focusing on three core areas:
performance, sustainability and impact, and profitability.
Within performance, our global technology team works
alongside chemical engineers and top vendors to find new solutions to refinish problems, said Brunoir. These solutions usually
focus on performance and productivity enhancements as well as
refinishing advanced substrates. Sustainability and impact guide
us in finding more environmentally harmonious repair and refinish products that aim to reduce resources and minimize footprint
and impact. Many of our new products are Coast-2-Coast
technology that means we proactively create coatings that meet
the strictest air quality regulations, before they are mandated.
Our goal is always to formulate coatings that provide solutions
and with minimal change in application technique intuitive application is key. And in todays global economy and fluctuating
financial situations, we are keen to create products that make our
customers more profitable. We are a Lean company and intentionally minimize overhead and added costs.
Nanotechnology and improved color capability are areas
where refinish companies are focising their R&D efforts.
The latest technologies being used for the auto refinish market include nanotechnology for improved color capability and enhanced digital color tools that allow improved color retrieval and
accuracy for our customers, said Joanne Hardy, North America
technology director at Axaltas Global Coatings Technology
Center. There are also advancements in high performance
polymers that allow for improved rheology control to enhance

appearance and support lower curing temperatures. These advances continue to allow production of ever more sustainable
coating formulations, such as low-VOC and waterborne, that are
more environmentally responsible and utilize less energy.
With OEMs using exterior colors as a key differentiator for
their offerings, many highly chromatic, vibrant colors are being introduced that provide a candy-like appearance. To match
these translucent colors for refinish work, PPG is incorporating
its ANDARO tint dispersion into our premium basecoat platforms, said Gareth Hughes, director of technology and global
platform marketing, PPG Automotive Refinish. This proprietary dispersion process uses nanotechnology in order to get
the pigments down to the minuscule size required to achieve
the transparent, dye-like appearance. A spectral gray undercoat
system that designates a specific gray primer to partially show
through the color coat and create the final color is used with
these toners. This mirrors the similar process used by the OEMs,
for an excellent color match.
Axalta has launched new products in a variety of regions
globally. In Europe, Axalta recently launched a cutting-edge new
generation clear coat technology, which combines excellent appearance with optimal drying attributes, either as forced drying in
five minutes or as air-dry with zero energy consumption. This clear
coat combines well with Axaltas recently launched waterborne
basecoat system.
In our Asia Pacific region, we launched our Ultra
Productivity system that features G3 Clear Coat and a new
surfacer primer in China to help customers shorten the painting process and improve body shop productivity, said RuessSaltz. In India, Cromax Pro was introduced to demonstrate our
commitment to the market and our focus on producing more
sustainable coatings. Cromax Pro features Axaltas latest waterborne technology, which helps to decrease customers overall
environmental footprint.
In the U.S. our latest waterborne technologies - Cromax
Pro, StandoBlue and StandoHyd Hi-Tec - are among the most
productive waterborne technologies and meet that challenge
with coverage in 1.5 coats to reduce booth time, painter time
and booth energy usage, Ruess-Saltz added. Were also excited
about the strong interest in our Cromax Mosaic product, a low
VOC solventborne paint with full collision color capability.
With the rapid adoption of our waterborne basecoat technology as a mainstream refinish system, PPG is focusing on upping
overall performance of the primers and clears of our waterborne
refinish systems. For example weve just introduced clearcoats
with new resin technologyproducts engineered to be exceptionally easy to apply, along with excellent gloss from the gun.
EC530 En-V Performance Clearcoat and D8173 Premium UHS
Clearcoat are the first of a series of new premium clears that we
feel will be real game changers in reducing technician application errors and the need for rework, said Hughes.
Quest Automotive Products have launched a number of new

2014 and Beyond

Axalta has had significant expansion activity already this year.
Kicking the year off, in January we broke ground to construct
additional waterborne capacity in Shanghai, said Ruess-Saltz.
In September we broke ground to expand our Wuppertal,
Germany operations center, already our largest, to add production capacity for waterborne coatings. In Latin America, we just
announced a $10.5 million investment to expand resin production in Mexico and were continuing with the final leg of a three
year expansion program in Brazil. Over the past 12 months we
opened a new corporate headquarters in Philadelphia, new regional headquarters for North America and Asia Pacific and new
training or office facilities in key markets like Spain (Barcelona)
and the U.K. (Wellyn Garden City).
In mid-2013, Quest Specialty Chemicals, Quest
Automotives parent company, acquired U.S. Chemical &
Plastics and all of its brands, including Prospray Automotive
Finishes. This move made QAP the most diverse manufacturer in our industry from body filler, to abrasives, to
masking products to waterborne and solventborne color and
refinish products - we have a brand and solution for every
shop need, said Brunoir. In 2014, we completed a major
expansion by adding over 23,000 sq. ft. of warehousing and
logistics capacity to better service our customers. More of
the same is planned for 2015. We will continue to grow organically and through acquisitions, each time optimizing our
business models, technology, logistics, information, marketing and manufacturing, to provide optimal efficiency which
means the best products, the best people and the best service
at the best price. We are excited about the future. CW

Investor Chaos or Opportunity?

Considering everything that is happening in the

world today is China still the land of opportunity?
Dan Watson, Contributing Writer

very investment has two possible outcomes (Positive or

Negative). When it comes to placing that investment in
a foreign country it can be impacted by any number of
events outside of the control of the investor. These country risks
can and do influence the eventual outcome of the investment
(i.e. such country risks include but are not limited to political
risk, exchange rate risk, economic risk, sovereign risk and transfer risk, which is the risk of capital being locked up or frozen by
government action). There is also the risk associated with civil
unrest. For the past couple of decades we have seen thousands
of foreign companies rushing into China to make an investment,
assume the risk of that investment in order to become a part of
Chinas future. For some that has proven to be a wise decision
while for others it didnt turn out exactly as planned.
Today, China is the second largest economy on the globe
with a lot of experts predicting that it will surpass the U.S.
in the next few years. It has enjoyed an unprecedented
growth of its GDP over the past two or three decades. So,
with that thought in mind, the question posed by this article
is simply considering everything that is happening in the
world today is China still the land of opportunity, is it still
worth the assumption of country risk by future investors?

Unless you have been asleep for the past few months or isolated on some deserted island you are very much aware of the
numerous global crisis that are evolving around us. Everything
from the Russians saber rattling in the Ukraine; the rise of ISIS
in the Middle East; rumors about a possible change in leadership in North Korea; protesters in Hong Kong exercising civil
unrest. If you recall, Hong Kong was returned from a century of
British rule to Beijing on June 30, 1997. So far its been a fairly
peaceful movement.
This particular protest in Hong Kong would seem to be
mostly about the citys special status based on the agreement
the city has with the Beijing government. Hong Kong is largely
autonomous from the rest of China, has greater freedom, and
even has a promise from Beijing to have free elections in 2017.
Although the Hong Kong protest is getting all the headlines
this protest is not just about Hong Kong. If we look at history, mainland China has had a long history of public protest.
That history impinges directly on whats happening in Hong
Kong today. As we have seen, protest in China tend to come
and go with some solved using military force while others end
somewhat more peacefully with a simple compromise. This
particular protest is being looked at carefully by the foreign

FEATURE China Report

investment community since how it eventually gets resolved
could be a sign of how the central government will act in regards to other situations that might impact on foreign investors. Its possible that this whole issue may be resolved prior
to the publication of this article.
As a bit of history, some of the great, most celebrated protest
actions in Chinas past began with student activism. If the state
uses repressive actions against students, even if the official press
chooses only to denigrate the students, then it normally leads to
large numbers of sympathizers joining with the students on the
streets. This is something that happened in Beijing, and many
other cities, in 1989. But it also happened as far back as 1919,
when there was an initially student-led movement that led to a
general strike in Shanghai.
The irony of this protest is that the residents of Hong Kong
didnt like life under the British rule and they now equate life
under Beijing to be no better than what they experienced under
the British, hence Beijing has become the New British.
The question that everyone is wondering about is What
is the potential long-term economic and business impact of
the massive protests sweeping Hong Kong? Not surprisingly, no so called China expert appears ready to make any
definite predictions about this matter, at least not yet. Thats
mostly due to the continuing uncertainty about how exactly
how long the demonstrations will continue and the larger
question about what actions Beijing may take to contain the
unrest. If we assume that the protests will continue for some
time, such action would definitely hit the tourism and retail
industries of Hong Kong, which added together yield about
10 percent of the territorys total gross domestic product.
These two sectors would be harshly impacted due to the
fact that most tourists would avoid going to Hong Kong. In
addition, overall business confidence in Hong Kong would
likely take a nose dive. After Hong Kongs economy contracted last quarter, a prolonged bout of protest or a heavy
handed Beijing response to the protest could easily push
Hong Kong into a recession. To this writer, the worst-case
scenario would materialize if Beijing were to decide to end
the protest using force by sending in the army or armed police. That sort of action would most likely have severe repercussions far beyond Hong Kongs borders and send shivers
around the globe thus jeopardizing Hong Kongs status as an
international financial center. Such fall out would impact
negatively on Chinas own economy thus creating a lose/
lose situation for all involved.
It appears that the main casualty of the protests (so far at
least) is the often referred to policy of one country, two systems. When China took back Hong Kong from Britain in 1997,
Hong Kong became what is known as a Special Administrative
Region (SAR) of China under a unique set of conditions, called
one country, two systems. This rather cumbersome sounding
policy was put together to win over support from the residents
of Hong Kong for the takeover by China. This policy granted
Hong Kong a defined range of freedoms that was far greater
than what was (and still is) allowed on the Chinese mainland.

Investment in China from the EU rose

18.1% year on year in 2013 to $7.2
billion while investments from the U.S.
climbed 7.1% to $3.4 billion.
Hence, the recent decision taken by the central government in
August to renege on parts of that agreement signals that Beijing
cannot be trusted in this matter.
Its important to point out that both Britain and the U.S.
offered themselves as guarantors of the 1997 transition agreement that established Hong Kong as a Special Administrative
Region (SAR). I strongly suspect that this is a responsibility that
neither country wishes to take today. Should there be a violent
crackdown of the protesters initiated by Beijing its highly unlikely that any country would do much to be of assistance to
Hong Kong. Military action by any outside groups is out of the
question, and economic sanctions would come into the picture
only if the level of violence is deemed extreme. Obviously, there
would not be any Russian proposed sanctions levied on China.
So the Hong Kong movement of today is actually linked to
long-term traditions and history within China, its also connected to things happening in other parts of the world, and its
connected to quite different but simultaneously occurring challenges around the territory that the Chinese government wants
to claim authority over. Needless to say the Hong Kong protest
is probably connected to some political actions being played
out within the Beijing power structure. Somewhat coincidentally, the Communist Partys Central Committee will convene
in Beijing in October for their annual plenum to plot and steer
the countrys economic, political and social path. Anything that
would make President Xi look weak or indecisive will benefit
his detractors.
So, with this bit of history and introduction, lets revisit the
question posed by this article. Is China the right place for offshore companies to make a significant investment today?
To answer this question I propose that we assume that the
Hong Kong issue will be peacefully resolved. How that will
actually happen is open to speculation. China has far more
to lose by incorporating force to resolve this protest that it
has to gain. A number of China experts feel that in the end,
the protesters will gain some of their demands but probably,
not all of them.
To address the primary question at hand, its important to
look at key parameters. Investments are generally made in areas that offer a good return and pose good growth opportunities. How does China stack up in this regard? Looking at the
past few years (2000 2013) one thing is for certain, Chinas
GDP growth has been unmatched by any other country (See
GRAPH # 1, next page).

FEATURE China Report

Most economist feel that the amazing growth in GDP

achieved so far by China will start to slow down over the coming years. However, even with China slowing, its economy is
still expanding at double the pace of Americas. So growing at
7 percent literally means that the Chinese economy will double in size in the next ten years. Such growth would bring the
Chinese economy to about the same size as Americas is now.
With the U.S. growing at only around 2-3 percent per annum
(see GRAPH # 2), speculation as to when China takes the crown
is gaining momentum daily. However, no one is picking an exact date for this to occur, not just yet. What ultimately matters more than absolute size is the income earned by the people

within a country. And it will be many more years before per

capita GDP in China will overtake that of the U.S. under any of
these measures.
So, are foreign companies still investing in China? The
short answer is yes. According to the United Nations, annual Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) flows to China grew
from $2 billion in 1985 to an estimated $121 billion in 2013
(see GRAPH #3), and may have actually reached $127 billion
in 2013. The U.N. further estimates the stock of FDI in China
through 2012 at $832.9 billion. This is a strong indicator of investors confidence that the worlds second-largest economy can
keep growing at a solid pace while retooling its growth model.
As indicated in GRAPH #4, China was the worlds secondlargest destination for FDI flows in 2013 (after the United
States). You might wonder where this FDI is coming from.
Asian companies are by far the biggest investors in China, with
investment from the top 10 economies in the region including
Hong Kong, Thailand and Singapore rising annually by 7.1 percent in 2013 to $102.5 billion.

Investment from the European Union rose 18.1 percent

year-on-year in 2013 to $7.2 billion, while investment from the
United States climbed 7.1 percent to $3.4 billion.
Chinas service industries were the biggest draw for foreign investment, pulling in $50 billion, up about 14 percent. Not surprising,
given rapidly rising labor and other costs, investment in manufacturing fell by 5.2 percent, to $38 billion, making up just over two-fifths
of the total. Investment in agriculture, animal husbandry, and fishery
businesses dropped by 2.6 percent, to $1.4 billion.
At the same time this FDI is coming into China, Chinese
companies are expanding abroad. Chinas outbound direct
investment by non-financial firms jumped 16.8 percent to
$90.2 billion in 2013 versus 2012. This growth in external investment has experts predicting that Chinas outbound
investment could exceed foreign direct investment in China
sometime in the near future. GRAPH #5 displays Chinas
investment history in the U.S.
When you look at the data, the history and forward looking
estimates it appears that compared to other locations China is
a reasonably safe place for foreign companies to invest. This
is especially true for those companies involved in the Coatings

industry (i.e. raw material or formulated coatings supplier).

China has become the worlds largest producer and consumer
of coatings. As the paint, coatings, adhesives and sealants industries continue to grow in China, leading foreign companies
will continue to invest heavily in this region.
However, its fairly important to point out that Chinas
leaders want to reduce the economys reliance on foreign investment, while expanding household consumption, which
now accounts for around 35 percent of the economy, about
one-half the 70 percent rate in the U.S. Beijing wants to unlock

the power of the middle class to consume. Unfortunately, there

is still not a lot of evidence China is making that economic
transition. Fixed asset investment, for example, still appears
to be the main economic driver. The so called mini-stimulus,
which involved ramping up public spending on railway, energy
and infrastructure projects, did in fact drive a sharp acceleration in steel output, and also supported cement and metals
production. The central bank also eased monetary conditions.
To most China observers it appears the Chinese government
has reverted back to the old investment playbook. The consumer sector is important to the future of China, but today
its too small and growing too slowly to be a key driver of the
broader economy. Looking ahead, the Key Issues in China for
International Investors seem to be:
Deregulation of Interest Rates
Liberalization of the Currency
Improving Market access for foreign companies
wLess tension between Beijing and various mainland sites
(i.e. Hong Kong).
Bottom line, all financial investments contain an element of
risk. Investing in China or any other foreign location simply
adds more elements of risk that needs to be analyzed and managed accordingly. This writer still views China as an opportunity but not for the faint hearted. CW

Speeds Up Adjustment

An impending tax on solvent-based coatings will help water-based coatings expand

market share in China.
Arnold Wang, China Correspondent

ased on the report released by China National

Coatings Industry Association, the total coatings output of China reached 13.03 million tons in 2013, an
increase of 3.6 percent from 2012, but this is the lowest
growth rate in the last ten years. It is estimated that the
Chinese coatings industry is difficult to return to double
digit growth in the next two years, and the adjustment of
the structure of Chinas coatings industry will continue and
might even speed up with the government releasing more
and more regulation policies.
China National Coatings Industry Association also disclosed that the Chinese government is planning to impose
consuming tax on restricted solvent-based coatings so that the
release of VOC can be reduced. If the policy is implemented,
the profit of solvent-based coatings producers will be under

coaches. The association thinks that these government policies will speed up the production adjustment in the coatings
industry and this new trend will present to the coatings producers both a challenge and an opportunity.
The coatings producers do not wait for things to happen by themselves. China National Coatings Industry
Association and China Petroleum and Chemical Industry
Federation are applying to the Ministry of Finance to put
the name of those furniture producers that use water-based
wood coatings into the government purchasing list, a policy which will benefit water-based wood coating producers if the policy is really adopted. Besides, China National
Coatings Industry Association is cooperating with home
furniture association to put label on the home furniture
which uses water based coatings.

Merging and acquisition help large

coatings companies grow even bigger
It is estimated that the growth of Chinas coatings industry
will be seven percent in 2014. Infrastructure and the real estate industry and automotive industry will continue driving
the growth of the coatings industry. The automotive industry
grew fast in 2013, producing a total of 23.87 million passenger vehicles, 18.40 percent higher than that of 2012. Among
all the passenger vehicles produced last year, SUV grew the
fastest, increasing by 49.41 percent in 2013 in comparison
with 2012. But foreign companies still play a major role in
the automotive coatings market. Right now 75-80 percent
of OEM automotive coatings market share is controlled by
several foreign companies including Kansai, BASF, Axalta,
PPG, Nippon Paint and KCC. On the contrary, around
75 percent refinish market share is controlled by Chinese
domestic companies, including Guangzhou Shichuang,
Guangzhou Boni, Changzhou Pulanna, Guangzhou Lianhe,
Changzhou Fulaimu, Guangzhou Futian, and Guangzhou
Yatu, but their products are mainly middle and low end,
and the high end market is still in the hands of several multinational companies such as PPG, Valspar, BASF, KCC and
Nippon Paint.
Architecture and wood coatings grows faster than industrial
coatings. Nippon Paint and Asia Paint, who mainly produce
architecture or wood coatings, or both, all enjoyed a growth
rate of over 20 percent. Nippon Paint has reached a milestone in its development history in China with its sales passing 10 billion yuan in 2013 to stay at 10.48 billion yuan.
October 2014

And Nippon Paint does not seem to slow down its growth
in China. At the end of 2013 the company reinforced its No.
1 position in the Chinese coatings market by acquiring the
largest floor paint producer-SUPE. Li Laizhou, reputational
chairman of Nippon SUPE, said the merger may possibly
add two billion yuan revenue to Nippon Paint in the next
five years. In addition to this, Nippon Paint strengthened
its capability in the wood coatings market by purchasing
Opel Paint from Dulux Camel in early 2014. Opel Paint, a
leading wood coatings producer in China and No.1 in the
Shanghai market, has close connections with large architecture materials supermarkets such as B&Q, Leroy Merlin,
Orient Home, etc. New investments from foreign companies have also aimed at western areas of China. AkzoNobel
is building a new powder coatings and decoration coatings
plant in Sichuan, and in March AkzoNobel opened its new
office in Chengdu, the provincial capital of Sichuan, facilitating its business in western China.

...total coatings ouput for

China reached 13.03 million tons
in 2013, but this is the lowest
growth in the last ten years.
Domestic paint producers are not slowing down their
growth either. Carpoly, the largest domestic coatings company in China, announced recently that Carpoly has put into
operation a new plant respectively in Qingyuan, Hebei and
in Jiangmen, Guangdong. The two plants will help Carpoly
realize its target of increasing its sales from three billion yuan
to six billion yuan in the next five years. And merging and
acquisition is also happening in China with market competition getting even fierce. For example, Guangdong Laorentou
acquired Guangdong Yinghua, another major coatings producer, in April free of charge, making striking news in the
coatings industry.

Trade business holds a small share of the

market
The coatings trade business in China has become less and less
important after more technologies have been brought into China
and local production based established. In 2013, China imported 180.7 thousand tons coatings, almost equal to the volume
of 2012, but the value of imported coatings was increased by
3.97 percent. On the contrary, China exported 177.4 thousand
tons coatings in 2013, increased by 4.26 percent over 2012, but
the value of exported coatings was increased by 11.16 percent.
But comparing with total coatings output in China, the coatings
trade business is very small in volume. CW

Solvent Reduction Technology

What are the Rules?
The following article is a summarized version of the full research paper recently delivered as a presentation on this topic of
solvent reduction technology at the Roof Coatings Manufacturers Associations 2014 International Roof Coatings Conference
(IRCC).

By Dr. Michael R. Van De Mark and Ameya M. Natu, Missouri S&T Coatings Institute

OC or volatile organic content has been one of the main

driving forces behind coatings technological innovation
and research efforts for the past 40 years since the advent
of the EPA and the clean air act.1 The approaches to the problem of an ever decreasing VOC has taken two directions. First,
the application of the art of formulation, where experience and
trial and error are used to reduce the level of VOC. At first, this
approach worked but as the levels of allowed VOC dropped it
found limits. The second approach is to use science to define
what will work and the true rules. This second approach is the
one we use at the Missouri S&T Coatings Institute.
The importance of the use of solvents in coatings has been
over blown. All solvents cost money and are only there to deliver the coating to the substrate, then, they leave. All solvents
cost to ship including water and we should look at solvent as
something we would want to eliminate if we can.
The resin and the pigment, including the extender pigments
which help lower the coating cost, are the two major paint components influencing the viscosity or flow of paints. The pigment
increases the viscosity as its concentration increases. As the aspect
ratio of primarily the extender increases from a sphere, ratio of 1,
to platy talc with its ratio of 40, the viscosity will increase significantly at the same volume fraction. Thus low PVC and low aspect
ratio will yield the lower viscosity and aid with VOC reduction.
The most influential is the resin which is the focus of the paper.2

Resin and Solvent Interaction Issues

The resin is the major contributor to the viscosity of a coating. The
choice of solvent can play a major role in how the viscosity responds
to the added solvent which is demonstrated by the Mark-Houwink
equation3, Equation 1. In a good solvent, the resin usually is in a
random coil configuration with an a of 0.4-0.7. If the polymer has
charges on the chain, they repel one another and the chain becomes
a rigid rod with an exponent of 2. If the polymer chain is in a ball
shape with no solvent inside (also known as hard sphere), the exponent is 0 and thus the viscosity becomes low and independent of
molecular weight.4 Examples of hard sphere resins are latex, dispersions and water reducible resins including CUPs.
The viscosity of a resin in a good solvent can be controlled by

adding a poorer solvent which reduces the value of exponent a and

gives viscosity which allows spray. This technology is simply a reduction with solvent which reduces the viscosity by more than simply adding more of the good solvent since the exponent is lowered.
Equation 1
The Mark Houwink equation also indicates that if we want to lower
the viscosity we can also reduce the molecular weight. However, as
the molecular weight is lowered below approximately 100,000, the
tensile strength drops. Thus, although the viscosity is now sprayable
at lets say 40,000 MW, the mechanical properties of the coating are
inferior and cannot be used.5 The answer to this is reaction cure
cross-link the resin after application. This is how 2K urethanes,
urea, and epoxy coatings work by using building blocks of resins
with 200-1500 molecular weight which combine many times to
reach a molecular weight giving good mechanical performance.6 In
addition, reactive diluents can be used which are actually monomers,
which act as both a solvent and are incorporated into the resin.

WR vs CUP: a new approach

The term water reducible (WR) has been around since about the
mid-1950s. It refers to a process by which a water insoluble resin
is dissolved in a high boiling, water soluble, organic solvent and
base is added to form a salt. Most of the chain is hydrophobic. When water is added, the chains collapse into a hard sphere
mainly containing only one polymer chain per particle depending
upon the polymer concentration when water is added.7
The term CUP was coined a few years ago in our research
group. It stands for a colloidal unimolecular polymer particle
dispersed in water without solvent. The process to form CUP
particles is very similar to that of water reduction. The major
differences are the use of a low boiling organic solvent, lower
than water, and after reduction, the solvent is stripped off to
yield a VOC free resin suspended in water, Figure 1.8 This process is the true pinnacle of what we referred to as reduction in
lowering the exponent of the Mark Houwink equation to zero.
The measured and calculated (from GPC data) diameters and distribution of CUP particles are virtually identical indicating a true unimolecular polymer particle.9 These particles are thermodynamically

stable suspensions unlike latexes which will settle out over time.10
A study of effect of molecular weight variation on CUP formation
and stability has shown that CUP particle size tracked the molecular weight except at very low molecular weight. From MW 13k up,
the theoretical and experimental particle size data were in very good
agreement. The CUP of 153K MW also went well and was of zero
VOC. For conventional water reducible resins, as the molecular
weight goes up so does the VOC. For example, water reducible resin
with 20K MW, the VOC is about 1lb/gal and at 40K it is about 3.2
lbs/gal making it impossible to use higher molecular weight resins
with the VOC restrictions we have today.11

Chen, C. Hancock, C. J. Riddles, J. Coat. Technol. Res., 11, 2013, 111-122

The viscosity of CUP systems are dependent upon concentration

and the amount of charge on the particle. As the CUP concentration
increases the distance between particles decreases and the charges on
the particles repel each other which increases the viscosity. The higher
the charge density the higher the viscosity. Thus, keeping the charge
to the minimum needed to stabilize the particle in solution should be
targeted to give the lowest viscosity. As the particle size increases, the
point at which the viscosity rises, decreases in terms of percent solids.12
As shown in Figure 2, the particles with surface water and charge
can randomly pack or form a close pack configuration. In the end, the
resin must conform to the Kepler conjecture which limits the volume
solids before gelation. The thickness of the bound water layer () as
indicated in Figure 2, is approximately 0.56 nm. This layer is approximately the same for the three resins depicted in Figure 3 which represents a 100nm latex, a 25nm urethane dispersion and a CUP particle.

Figure 2. Random close packing of CUP with surface water (left); Kepler Conjecture with CUP and its surface water (right). M. Chen, C. J. Riddles, M. R. Van
De Mark, Colloid Polym. Sci., 291, 2013, 2893-2901

Solvent reduction can be achieved by using various methodologies and is an active field of research. With unique modifications to the existing water-reduction technique we have
developed novel aqueous polymer systems (CUPs) with zero
VOC to address the solvent issues and paved the way for future
developments in resin technology. CW

Our Cities

Andr Veneman, Corporate Director, Sustainability & HSE, AkzoNobel

e now live in the age of the city. More than half

of the worlds people live in urban areas and by
2050, it will be more like 70 percent. At the same
time, we are using natural resources 1.5 times faster than the
world can replenish itself. With city living set to continue rising, climate change and resource scarcity challenges are only
going to increase.
One of the key challenges is to make existing buildings in
cities more energy efficient, more water efficient and more renewable, using solutions ranging from the simple such as insulation to the more advanced, such as clean energy, building
management systems and water recycling measures.
At the same time, if new buildings are not greener than what
went before, it simply wont work and governments around
the world need to continue to introduce new rules to make sure
that they are greener than before.
The World Business Council for Sustainable Development
(WBCSD) predicts that by 2050, 90 percent of buildings will
be zero net energy and fewer than six percent of buildings
will use fossil fuels for heating or cooling. But it is about
more than just the buildings on their own city dwellers need
not just smart buildings but smart cities, with smart grids,
and smart transport networks.
As developers and city planners grapple with these trends
and challenges, they are increasingly looking to their suppliers
to help tackle them.
At AkzoNobel we are working to meet these needs through

chain. Its about using more renewable energy and raw materials where possible and developing new products that
can help customers do the same to make a positive influence on society.
But companies can still do more. For example, at
AkzoNobel we have expertise in the field of life cycle assessment and circular economy models and we believe that by
sharing this knowledge we can play an even greater role in
making our cities more sustainable.
Taking this further, we believe that companies can and
should share their knowledge and expertise in an open way
with mayors, architects, urban planners and other urban
opinion formers. By working in collaboration we have the
opportunity to rethink our city environments and ultimately
make them more liveable.
At AkzoNobel we have a long history of providing innovative products that make the world a better place. But we know
there are times when we need to work with others to find those
breakthrough innovative solutions. This thinking not only
forms part of our Planet Possible approach to sustainability but
also contributes to our Human Cities initiative to create more
liveable cities. CW

AkzoNobel Reveals its

Color of the Year for 2015

AkzoNobel recently revealed Copper Orange as its Color of the Year for 2015. Warm and surprising, Copper Orange reflects a more
positive outlook on the world while representing a new emphasis on the concept of sharing, the company said.
Selected by an invited panel of independent design and color experts, it has a depth which combines with pinks, neutrals, whites
and other orange hues, as well as metallic colors and wood tones.
According to AkzoNobel, the overriding idea for 2015 is that people are finding new ways to add color to their lives and developing a warmer and more caring environment for all. Copper Orange captures this mood.
It spearheads the companys Colour Futures 2015 global study of color trends, which includes five main themes, all inspired
by one larger idea, identified as Everyday + Finding the wonderful in the normal.

Copper Orange was selected by a panel of independent design and

color experts as AkzoNobels Color of the Year for 2015.
