Materials  fabric swatches or construction paper, drawing paper, a giant white sheet of
paper, paint, paintbrushes, colored blocks, crayons or colored pencils

30 minutes, Days 1–3

Build Background
Activate Prior Knowledge  Tell children: Today, you will learn about colors.
Hoy aprenderán sobre los colores. One by one, show different-colored swatches to
the class. If swatches are not available, construction paper may be used. While
holding up each swatch, ask: What color is this? (red) ¿Qué color es este? (rojo) Then
place the swatches on a table. Have the class put objects, such as crayons,
colored blocks, or other classroom items, next to the swatch that matches the
color of the object. Ask children to say the colors aloud in English or Spanish
as they place the objects.

Introduce the Focus Skill: Color Names  Explain that this book
is about color names in English and Spanish. List the colors in English
and Spanish on the board. Place a giant white sheet of paper on the floor.
Distribute paint and paintbrushes. Tell children to paint a rainbow as a class
and label the colors in English and Spanish. Review the colors as a class.

Acquire New Vocabulary  Introduce the following words to the class: paint/pintar, draw/dibujar, and make/hacer.
Use the words in sentences to explain their meaning: We paint pictures with a brush. Nosotros pintamos cuadros con un pincel. We draw
with crayons and colored pencils. Nosotros dibujamos con crayones y lápices de color. We make things with our hands. Nosotros hacemos cosas con las
manos. Then tell children that they will make art for each word. Each child will do a handprint, a drawing, and make something simple,
such as a paper airplane. Make sure that children thoroughly wash their hands after making their handprints. Then ask the class to
copy a simple sentence in English and Spanish and to label their artwork. For example: I paint. Yo pinto. I draw. Yo dibujo. I make. Yo hago.
Review spelling and pronunciation as a class.

Read and Respond  Display the book. Read the title and author name aloud as you track the print. Read the book aloud to
the class. Point out the different art techniques used on each page as you read. Reinforce the art vocabulary after finishing a page. For
example, after reading p. 8, ask: What does she do? ¿Qué hace ella? Guide children to answer: She paints. Ella pinta. Have children repeat the
color name on each page as you read.

60 minutes, Days 4–5

L Curricular Enrichment: Science

SCIENCE
Explain to children that the book mentions some things that exist in nature,
such as the Sun, sea, grass, and pumpkins. Take the class on a nature walk. Tell them to pick a scene from nature that they
would like to draw. Guide them to focus on living things, not inanimate objects such as buildings, cars, fences, etc. Upon
returning to the classroom, distribute crayons or colored pencils and drawing paper. Ask children to make nature drawings
based on what they saw on their nature walk. Guide children to make connections with science by labeling their drawings
with the color names in both English and Spanish (i.e. blue sky/cielo azul, gray rocks, rocas grises, etc.). Share and discuss the
drawings as a class.
